Interview with Cynthia Venables

In her July 3, 2013 interview with Martha Manning, Cynthia Burris Venables shares her experiences at Winthrop from 1985-1989, as well as her career teaching English. Discussed is Venables coursework as an English major and the rigor of her studies. Additionally, Venables talks about Latin and Biology courses and who her favorite professors were. Venables details what it is like teaching in the 21st Century, her opinions on technology and teaching, and her accomplishments as an educator. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections Oral History Program.

Interview with Stephen Lovegrove

In his December 2014 interview with Michelle Dubert-Bellrichard, Stephen Lovegrove shares his story coming to Winthrop as an “out” student recently kicked out of a religious college. Lovegrove details his perception of the attitude toward LGBTQ people and issues in Winthrop and Rock Hill. Lovegrove identifies resources in the community that are beneficial to LGBTQ people. He also comments on the LGBTQ social movement in terms of growing acceptance and the challenges it will face. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections Oral History Program.

Interview with Gabriel Paxton

In his February 18, 2015 interview with Michelle Dubert-Bellrichard, Gabriel Paxton shares the story of founding the grassroots organization Rock Hill for Equality. Included are his experiences as an ally in the Southeast and the partnerships he made to support Rock Hill for Equality. Paxton provides insight on this civil rights movement and speculates why the South is slow to change. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections Oral History Program.

Interview with Anthony DiGiorgio

In his interview with Daniel Lee, Anthony DiGiorgio recollects the impact Hurricane Hugo had on Winthrop University and the Rock Hill Community. DiGiorgio discusses weather reports leading up to the hurricane, his personal experience with the storm, and the aftermath of Hugo on campus. DiGiorgio shares the ways in which Winthrop University assisted the community and its faculty and staff. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections Oral History Program.

William Boyce White, Jr. Papers - Accession 1488

The William Boyce White, Jr. Papers consists of his genealogical research as well as his research related to the history of York County and Rock Hill, SC. The papers also include records and manuscripts relating to several of his published works. Mr. White is a Rock Hill native and taught at the Winthrop Training School (WTS) from 1958-1965 and taught at Rock Hill High School following the closing of the high school portion of the WTS. He also taught in Clover before coming to Winthrop. He was the organist at First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill from 1945 until he moved to Virginia. His interest in local history covers the Rock Hill train depot (included in the collection is a tintype of the original depot ca. 1860s), Colonel William Hill, the Catawba River, Catawba Indians, Rock Hill and York County schools, historic homes (includes several photographs, many of which were used by Elizabeth Reed in her long running series on historic homes in Rock HillEvening Herald), local churches, as well as Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Blackstocks, and York County in general. Of special interest is a copy of the Indian Land Chronicle dated January 21, 1859. Only three copies of the Chronicle are known to exist in the state of South Carolina. The genealogical research conducted by Mr. White covers many of the prominent names of York County and of South Carolina in general. Robert M. Ward Photograph Collection - Accession 502

The Robert M. Ward Photograph Collection consists of approximately 400 prints and 900 negatives from the photographs that he took in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Most of the events and individuals pictured are from the York County, SC area and include the Latta House in York, South Carolina, downtown Rock Hill, parades, baseball, military, aviation, sports, and other York County buildings and scenes. Also included are photographs of Landsford Canal State Park, York Technical College, Winthrop University, Catawba Indian chieftain King Haigler’s memorial, Andrew Jackson State Park, Kings Mountain State Park, Hall of Fame Golfer Sam Sneed's visit to Rock Hill, SC, and Charleston, South Carolina. The collection also contains newspaper articles from the York Observer, dated from 1988 to 1992, which helped to identify some of the people and events in the pictures.

Dorothy Gardner Jones Papers - Accession 192

The Dorothy Gardner Jones Papers consist of correspondence, reports, program notes, clippings, memoranda, and other records, mainly relating to Jones’ work as a Winthrop faculty member and involvement with professional organizations and social service groups in the Rock Hill, South Carolina area.

Hampton McNeely Jarrell Papers - Accession 343

The Hampton McNeely Jarrell Papers consists of Dr. Jarrell’s professional activities, membership in organizations, and work as a Winthrop faculty member, and includes biographical data, correspondence, teaching materials, rough notes, and drafts of his published and unpublished books, journal articles, newspaper articles, speeches, research notes, and several maps of South Carolina during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, relating to Jarrell’s publishing efforts, his activities as a Winthrop College faculty member, and his work with various historical, literary, and educational organizations as well as the history of the Jarrell Family Plantation. Research subjects include Rock Hill, S.C.; Col. William Hill; the Revolutionary War; the Civil War; Wade Hampton; William Gilmore Simms; York County, S.C.; and South Carolina history.

Kenneth R. Staton Papers - Accession 1174

Kenneth R. Staton from Rock Hill, South Carolina was a surveyor who operated primarily in York County, South Carolina from 1987 through 2004. The Kenneth R. Staton Papers consist of his survey plats, field books, and computer disks and diskettes.

Come-See-Me Festival Records - Accession 815

The Come-See-Me Festival Records consist of records and memorabilia from the Come-See-Me Festivals since its founding in 1962. The collection contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, financial reports and papers, promotional materials, and other records and material chronicling the development of the Come-See-Me Festival in Rock Hill, SC.

Joe Azer Photograph Collection - Accession 792

The Joe Azer Photograph Collection consists of more than 6500 photographs taken by Joe Azer, Rock Hill, South Carolina photographer. Included are photographs of beauty pageants, parades, women, families, fashion, local history, Winthrop students and events such as May Day, public school events, plays, sports, weddings, and Azer’s family. These photographs were taken in York, Chester, Lancaster, Cherokee, Kershaw, Chesterfield, Horry and other South Carolina counties. Also included are negatives, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, photograph albums, and photographic equipment, and photographs arranged by subject.

White Family Photograph Album Collection - Accession 717

The White Family Photograph Album Collection consists of 4 volumes of photographs taken by J. S. White of Rock Hill, SC of family members, friends, vacations, Rock Hill, SC, and of Winthrop from 1891-1897. One of the albums includes pictures from J.S. White’s tour of duty in the South Carolina Infantry during the Spanish American War.
