We present a new analysis of J/psi production yields in deuteron-gold collisions at root s(NN) =200 GeV using data taken from the PHENIX experiment in 2003 and previously published in S. S. Adler [Phys. Rev. Lett 96, 012304 (2006)]. The high statistics proton-proton J/psi data taken in 2005 are used to improve the baseline measurement and thus construct updated cold nuclear matter modification factors (R(dAu)). A suppression of J/psi in cold nuclear matter is observed as one goes forward in rapidity (in the deuteron-going direction), corresponding to a region more sensitive to initial-state low-x gluons in the gold nucleus. The measured nuclear modification factors are compared to theoretical calculations of nuclear shadowing to which a J/psi (or precursor) breakup cross section is added. Breakup cross sections of sigma(breakup)=2.8(-1.4)(+1.7) (2.2(-1.5)(+1.6)) mb are obtained by fitting these calculations to the data using two different models of nuclear shadowing. These breakup cross-section values are consistent within large uncertainties with the 4.2 +/- 0.5 mb determined at lower collision energies. Projecting this range of cold nuclear matter effects to copper-copper and gold-gold collisions reveals that the current constraints are not sufficient to firmly quantify the additional hot nuclear matter effect.

Azimuthal angle (Delta phi) correlations are presented for charged hadrons from dijets for 0.4 < p(T)< 10 GeV/c in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV. With increasing p(T), the away-side distribution evolves from a broad and relatively flat shape to a concave shape, then to a convex shape. Comparisons to p+p data suggest that the away-side can be divided into a partially suppressed ""head"" region centered at Delta phi similar to pi and an enhanced ""shoulder"" region centered at Delta phi similar to pi +/- 1.1. The p(T) spectrum for the head region softens toward central collisions, consistent with the onset of jet quenching. The spectral slope for the shoulder region is independent of centrality and trigger p(T), which offers constraints on energy transport mechanisms and suggests that it contains the medium response to energetic jets.

We present transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra of charged hadrons measured in deuteron-gold and nucleon-gold collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV for four centrality classes. Nucleon-gold collisions were selected by tagging events in which a spectator nucleon was observed in one of two forward rapidity detectors. The spectra and yields were investigated as a function of the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, nu, suffered by deuteron nucleons. A comparison of charged particle yields to those in p+p collisions show that yield per nucleon-nucleon collision saturates with nu for high momentum particles. We also present the charged hadron to neutral pion ratios as a function of p(T).

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for pi(+/-), K(+/-), p, and (p) over bar in p + p collisions at root s = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These data provide important baseline spectra for comparisons with identified particle spectra in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter T(inv), mean transverse momentum < p(T)>, and yield per unit rapidity dN/dy at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different root s in p + p and p + (p) over bar collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as m(T) scaling and x(T) scaling on the p(T) spectra between different energies. To discuss the mechanism of the particle production in p + p collisions, the measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading-order or next-to-leading-logarithmic perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a associação da obesidade com as práticas alimentares e conhecimentos de nutrição em escolares. MÉTODOS: Peso e estatura foram medidos em 573 crianças de todas as escolas municipais de Dois Irmãos e Morro Reuter, RS. Obesidade foi definida como Ãndice de massa corporal acima do percentil 95, tendo como referência os dados do National Center for Health Statistics. Práticas alimentares e conhecimentos em nutrição foram avaliados por questionário auto-aplicado aos escolares. Foi realizada análise de regressão logÃstica simples e ajustada para verificar associações. RESULTADOS: A obesidade mostrou-se associada com menos conhecimento de nutrição e práticas alimentares menos saudáveis. Crianças com essas caracterÃsticas apresentaram cinco vezes mais chances de serem obesas (OR=5,3;1,1-24,9). CONCLUSÕES: O nÃvel de conhecimento modifica a relação entre obesidade e práticas alimentares, levantando a suspeita de que as crianças que sabem mais sobre nutrição relatam práticas sabidamente mais saudáveis e não necessariamente as praticadas. As práticas alimentares menos saudáveis, quando considerado o nÃvel de conhecimento em nutrição dos escolares, foram fortemente associadas à obesidade.

FUNDAMENTO: Durante a infância e adolescência, o sedentarismo, o excesso de peso e a alimentação inadequada são fatores de risco para doenças crônicas, sobretudo obesidade, hipertensão arterial sistêmica e diabete melito. A intervenção precoce pode prevenir o desenvolvimento dessas complicações. OBJETIVO: Verificar a presença de fatores de risco cardiovasculares (obesidade e hipertensão arterial) e suas possÃveis interações com a capacidade cardiorrespiratória. Métodos: Estudo transversal composto de amostra estratificada por conglomerados, de 1.666 escolares, com idades entre 7 e 17 anos, 873 (52,4%) do sexo masculino e 793 (47,6%) do sexo feminino. Avaliaram-se as pressões arteriais sistólica (PAS) e diastólica (PAD), Ãndice de massa corporal (IMC), percentual de gordura (%G) e capacidade cardiorrespiratória. Ainda, PAS e PAD foram correlacionadas com circunferência da cintura (CC), relação cintura-quadril (RCQ), somatório de dobras cutâneas (ΣDC) e capacidade cardiorrespiratória. RESULTADOS: A avaliação do IMC dos escolares evidenciou 26,7% de sobrepeso ou obesidade e 35,9% com o percentual de gordura acima de moderadamente alto. Com relação aos nÃveis pressóricos, encontraram-se 13,9% e 12,1% de escolares limÃtrofes e hipertensos, para PAS e PAD, respectivamente. Houve associação entre hipertensão, obesidade e capacidade cardiorrespiratória. Observou-se correlação significativa em relação à PAS e PAD, para todas as variáveis analisadas, apresentando, ainda, uma relação fraca a moderada com as variáveis idade, peso, estatura, IMC e circunferência da cintura. CONCLUSÃO: A presença da hipertensão arterial associada à obesidade e seu reflexo na capacidade cardiorrespiratória reforçam a importância de se propor, já na infância, um estilo de vida mais ativo e saudável.

FUNDAMENTO: A obesidade tem sido identificada como importante fator de risco no desenvolvimento de doenças cardiovasculares, porém outros fatores exercem influência, combinados ou não à obesidade, e devem ser considerados na estratificação de risco cardiovascular em pediatria. OBJETIVO: Analisar a associação entre medidas antropométricas e fatores de risco cardiovascular, investigar os determinantes para as mudanças da pressão arterial (PA) e propor uma equação de predição para circunferência de cintura (CC) em crianças e adolescentes. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliadas 1.950 crianças e adolescentes, com idade entre 7-18 anos. Foi investigada a gordura visceral pela CC e a relação cintura-quadril, PA e Ãndice de massa corporal (IMC). Em uma subamostra selecionada aleatoriamente desses voluntários (n = 578), foram medidos o colesterol total, a glicemia e os triglicerÃdeos. RESULTADOS: A CC se correlacionou positivamente com o IMC (r = 0,85; p < 0,001) e a PA (PAS r = 0,45 e PAD = 0,37; p < 0,001). A glicemia e os triglicerÃdeos apresentaram correlação fraca com a CC (r = 0,110; p = 0,008 e r = 0,201; p < 0,001, respectivamente). O colesterol total não se correlacionou com nenhuma variável. Idade, IMC e CC foram preditores significativos nos modelos de regressão para PA (p < 0,001). Propõe-se uma equação de predição da CC para crianças e adolescentes: meninos: y = 17,243 + 0,316 (altura em cm); meninas: y = 25,197 + 0,256 (altura em cm). CONCLUSÃO: A CC está associada com fatores de risco cardiovascular e apresenta-se como fator preditor de risco para hipertensão em crianças e adolescentes. A equação de predição para CC proposta em nosso estudo deve ser testada em futuros trabalhos.

Abstract Background: Both poor aerobic fitness and obesity, separately, are associated with abnormal lipid profiles. Objective: To identify possible relationships of dyslipidemia with cardiorespiratory fitness and obesity, evaluated together, in children and adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 1,243 children and adolescents (563 males and 680 females) between 7 and 17 years of age from 19 schools. Obesity was assessed using body mass index (BMI) measurements, and cardiorespiratory fitness was determined via a 9-minute run/walk test. To analyze the lipid profile of each subject, the following markers were used: total cholesterol, cholesterol fractions (high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein) and triglycerides. Data were analyzed using SPSS v. 20.0, via prevalence ratio (PR), using the Poisson regression. Results: Dyslipidemia is more prevalent among unfit/overweight-obese children and adolescents compared with fit/underweight-normal weight boys (PR: 1.25; p = 0.007) and girls (PR: 1.30, p = 0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of dyslipidemia is directly related to both obesity and lower levels of cardiorespiratory fitness.

Setting: There exists very little supportive valuation literature for the valuation of industrial properties and the present state of research is capable of improvement. Objective: A critical examination of the procedure for the determination of the market value of industrial properties in accordance with § 194 Building Code will be made on the basis of the relevant valuation literature. Based on using standard valuation practices there should be a ground value derived for an industrial estate. Conclusion: When valuing industrial properties economic use is crucial, therefore the income approach is applied in order to attain the market value of the property. Difficulties which may arise include customary approaches for rent, property management costs and interest rates. Based on a Germany-wide cross-comparison with other automobile-producing properties a plausible range for the derivation of the groundvalue was determined. At the time of submission, the determination of the ground value by the expert Committee was unfinished.

A two-year study was carried out to evaluate the composition, abundance and species richness of Miridae from Parque Estadual do Turvo, municipality of Derrubadas, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Samplings were made in the springs of 2003 and 2004 (October), and autumns of 2004 and 2005 (May), using a beating tray method, along two trails of the park. Sampling effort (hours x collectors) in the quantitative collections totaled 153 hours. Two-hundred mirid specimens of 50 species were collected. The most abundant mirid was Prepops setosipes (Reuter, 1910), representing 23% of the collected individuals, followed by Collaria capixaba Carvalho & Fontes, 1981 (10.5%) and Tropidosteptes cribratus (Stål, 1860) (7%), the latter recorded in all sampling periods. The highest abundance was observed in the springs of 2003 and 2004, with 53 and 78 individuals, respectively. Rarefaction method showed that estimated species richness was higher in autumn/2004 than in the other sampling periods, and higher along Yucumã than in Garcia trail. Besides a higher species richeness, Yucumã had more exclusive species than Garcia trail. The percent of species represented by one or two specimens in quantitative samplings (singletons and doubletons) was 60%. Additional samplings including hand collection, random beating tray and light trap collections added 20 species not recorded in the quantitative samplings.

Every spring, workers of the Argentine Ant Linepithema humile kill a large proportion of queens within their nests, Although this behaviour inflicts a high energetic cost oil the colonies, its biological significance has remained elusive so far. An earlier study showed that the probability of a queen being executed is not related to her weight, fecundity, or age. Here we test the hypothesis that workers collectively eliminate queens to which they are less related, thereby increasing their inclusive fitness. We found no evidence for this hypothesis. Workers of a nest were on average not significantly less related to executed queens than to surviving ones. Moreover, a population genetic analysis revealed that workers were not genetically differentiated between nests. This means that workers of a given nest are equally related to any queen in the population and that there can be no increase in average worker-queen relatedness by selective elimination of queens. Finally, our genetic analyses also showed that, in contrast to workers, queens were significantly genetically differentiated between nests and that there was significant isolation by distance for queens.
Sex-specific selective pressures on body mass in the greater white-toothed shrew, Crocidura russula.

The direction, intensity and shape of viability-, sexual- and fecundity selection on body mass were investigated in a natural population of the greater white-toothed shrew (Crocidura russula), combining parentage assignment through molecular techniques and mark-recapture data over several generations. A highly significant stabilizing viability selection was found in both sexes, presumably stemming from the constraints imposed by their insectivorous habits and high metabolic costs. Sexual selection, directional in both sexes, was twice as large in males than in females. Our results suggest that body mass matters in this context by facilitating the acquisition and defense of a breeding territory. No fecundity selection could be detected. The direction of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) was in agreement with the observed pattern of selective pressures: males were heavier than females, because of stronger sexual selection. SSD intensity, however, was low compared with other mammals, because of the low level of polygyny, the active role of females in territory defense and the intensity of stabilizing viability selection.

Abstract Life history traits encompass all the decisions concerning fitness an individual is faced with during his life. The study of these traits is crucial to understand the factors shaping the biology of living organisms. Up until now, most of the information on the evolution of life history traits comes from laboratory studies. While these studies are interesting to test the effect of specific parameters, their conclusions are difficult to extrapolate to natural populations. Investigating the evolution of life history traits in natural populations is of great interest. This may be tricky because it requires information on reproduction, survival and morphology of individuals. Mark-recapture methods allow most of this information to be obtained. However, when direct observations of a species are not possible due to its ecology, indirect methods must be used to infer lifetime reproductive success. In this case, molecular markers are particularly helpful in assessing the genetic relationships between individuals and allow the construction of a pedigree. This thesis focuses on a natural population of a small insectivorous mammal, the greater white-toothed shrew, Crocidura russula. Because of its hidden lifestyle, the two complementary techniques mentioned above were combined to gather information on this population. The data were used to explore diverse aspects of evolutionary biology. We demonstrated that the high genetic variance displayed by the species was not maintained by its mating system because this shrew was less monogamous than previously thought. The large genetic diversity was most likely promoted by gene flow from the neighborhood. Dispersal was thus a central topic in this thesis. We showed that dispersal was not driven by inbreeding avoidance. In addition, we did not find any inbreeding depression in the population. Dispersal was promoted by a high number of vacant territories in the population for both sexes, meaning that territory acquisition played an important role in driving dispersal. Moreover, dispersal propensity was shown to have a genetic basis and, once achieved, to have no effect on individual fitness. Body mass was found to be a life history trait strongly influenced by sexual and viability selection in both sexes. Larger individuals had higher access to reproduction through territory acquisition and defense than lighter ones. By contrast, intermediate size individuals were favored by viability selection presumably because of ecological constraints and metabolic costs. Finally, we demonstrated that the majority of the life history traits in our shrew population has the potential to evolve because they maintained substantial amounts of additive genetic variance. Nonetheless, life history traits had no significant heritability due to their high level of nonadditive or environmental variance. Résumé Les traits d'histoire de vie comprennent toutes les décisions auxquelles un individu est confronté au cours de sa vie et qui concernent sa valeur adaptative. L'étude de ces traits est cruciale pour comprendre les facteurs qui façonnent la biologie des êtres vivants. Jusqu'à ce jour, la majorité des informations sur l'évolution des traits d'histoire de vie provient d'études réalisées en laboratoire. Alors que ces études sont intéressantes pour tester l'effet de paramètres spécifiques, leurs conclusions sont difficilement extrapolables aux populations naturelles. Il est particulièrement intéressant d'étudier l'évolution des traits d'histoire de vie dans des populations naturelles. Toutefois, ces études peuvent se révéler difficiles parce qu'elles requièrent des informations sur la reproduction, la survie et la morphologie des individus. Des méthodes de marquage-recapture permettent d'obtenir ces informations. Cependant, lorsque l'écologie de l'espèce rend les obervations directes impossibles, des méthodes indirectes doivent être utilisées pour obtenir le succès reproducteur des individus. Dans ce cas, les marqueurs moléculaires sont particulièrement utiles pour évaluer les relations génétiques entre individus et permettre la construction d'un pedigree. Cette thèse porte sur une population naturelle d'un petit mammifère insectivore, la musaraigne musette, Crocidura russula. Parce que cette espèce présente un mode de vie souterrain, les deux techniques complémentaires mentionnées ci-dessus ont été combinées pour acquérir les informations nécessaires. Les données ont été utilisées pour explorer divers aspects de biologie evolutive. Nous avons montré que la grande quantité de variance génétique trouvée chez cette espèce n'est pas maintenue par son système d'appariement. Celle-ci s'est en effet avérée être moins monogame que ce qui était admis jusqu'ici. Sa grande diversité génétique est plutôt entretenue par le flux de gènes provenant du voisinage. La dispersion a donc été un sujet phare dans cette thèse. Nous avons montré qu'elle n'est pas provoquée par un évitement de la consanguinité et nous n'avons pas trouvé de dépression de consanguité dans notre population. L'acquisition d'un territoire joue par contre un rôle important dans la dispersion. En outre, la dispersion possède une base génétique chez cette espèce. De plus, une fois qu'ils ont dispersé, les individus n'ont pas une valeur adaptative differente d'individus philopatriques. Le poids s'est avéré être un trait d'histoire de vie fortement influencé par la sélection sexuelle et de viabilité chez les deux sexes. Les gros individus ont accès à la reproduction parce qu'ils acquièrent et défendent un territoire plus facilement que les plus légers. Au contraire, les individus de taille intermédiaire sont favorisés par la sélection de viabilité, certainement à cause de contraintes écologiques et de coûts métaboliques. Finalement, nous avons montré que la majorité des traits d'histoire de vie dans notre population a le potentiel d'évoluer parce qu'elle maintient des quantités considérables de variance génétique additive. Néanmoins, l'héritabilité de ces traits d'histoire de vie n'est pas significative à cause de la grande quantité de variance non-additive ou environmentale associée à ces traits.

BACKGROUND:Maternally transmitted symbionts have evolved a variety of ways to promote their spread through host populations. One strategy is to hamper the reproduction of uninfected females by a mechanism called cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). CI occurs in crosses between infected males and uninfected females and leads to partial to near-complete infertility. CI-infections are under positive frequency-dependent selection and require genetic drift to overcome the range of low frequencies where they are counter-selected. Given the importance of drift, population sub-division would be expected to facilitate the spread of CI. Nevertheless, a previous model concluded that variance in infection between competing groups of breeding individuals impedes the spread of CI.RESULTS:In this paper we derive a model on the spread of CI-infections in populations composed of demes linked by restricted migration. Our model shows that population sub-division facilitates the invasion of CI. While host philopatry (low migration) favours the spread of infection, deme size has a non-monotonous effect, with CI-invasion being most likely at intermediate deme size. Individual-based simulations confirm these predictions and show that high levels of local drift speed up invasion but prevent high levels of prevalence across the entire population. Additional simulations with sex-specific migration rates further show that low migration rates of both sexes are required to facilitate the spread of CI.CONCLUSION:Our analyses show that population structure facilitates the invasion of CI-infections. Since some level of sub-division is likely to occur in most natural populations, our results help to explain the high incidence of CI-infections across species of arthropods. Furthermore, our work has important implications for the use of CI-systems in order to genetically modify natural populations of disease vectors.
