Topological optimization problems based on stress criteria are solved using two techniques in this paper. The first technique is the conventional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO), which is known as hard kill, because the material is discretely removed; that is, the elements under low stress that are being inefficiently utilized have their constitutive matrix has suddenly reduced. The second technique, proposed in a previous paper, is a variant of the ESO procedure and is called Smooth ESO (SESO), which is based on the philosophy that if an element is not really necessary for the structure, its contribution to the structural stiffness will gradually diminish until it no longer influences the structure; its removal is thus performed smoothly. This procedure is known as "soft-kill"; that is, not all of the elements removed from the structure using the ESO criterion are discarded. Thus, the elements returned to the structure must provide a good conditioning system that will be resolved in the next iteration, and they are considered important to the optimization process. To evaluate elasticity problems numerically, finite element analysis is applied, but instead of using conventional quadrilateral finite elements, a plane-stress triangular finite element was implemented with high-order modes for solving complex geometric problems. A number of typical examples demonstrate that the proposed approach is effective for solving problems of bi-dimensional elasticity. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper deals with topology optimization in plane elastic-linear problems considering the influence of the self weight in efforts in structural elements. For this purpose it is used a numerical technique called SESO (Smooth ESO), which is based on the procedure for progressive decrease of the inefficient stiffness element contribution at lower stresses until he has no more influence. The SESO is applied with the finite element method and is utilized a triangular finite element and high order. This paper extends the technique SESO for application its self weight where the program, in computing the volume and specific weight, automatically generates a concentrated equivalent force to each node of the element. The evaluation is finalized with the definition of a model of strut-and-tie resulting in regions of stress concentration. Examples are presented with optimum topology structures obtaining optimal settings. (C) 2012 CIMNE (Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya). Published by Elsevier Espana, S.L.U. All rights reserved.

This is study proposes to evaluate the ergonomic aspects of dental equipments. Based on the characteristics proposed by ISO/FDI, on the existing literature and related researches an evaluating system was devised. Thirty nine dental clinics were examined using the 165 pointssystem proposed, distributed in 12 criteria. None of the dental clinics examined showed a bad ergonomics level, 41% were good and 59% reached excellent levels. The point-supported evaluation system proposed is effective in the analysis of the ergonomic conditions of dental equipments, allowing a quantification of their characteristics. Using this system, the dentist can also know the level of ergonomic satisfaction existing in his equipment, and identify the conditions to be improved. It was concluded that the equipment belonging to dental workplaces evaluated had excellent level of compliance, however corrective measures are needed since even the presence of a few non-conforming items is a sufficient condition to cause injury to users, decreased efficiency and comfort and loss quality of service

In this work, a new enrichment space to accommodate jumps in the pressure field at immersed interfaces in finite element formulations, is proposed. The new enrichment adds two degrees of freedom per element that can be eliminated by means of static condensation. The new space is tested and compared with the classical P1 space and to the space proposed by Ausas et al (Comp. Meth. Appl. Mech. Eng., Vol. 199, 10191031, 2010) in several problems involving jumps in the viscosity and/or the presence of singular forces at interfaces not conforming with the element edges. The combination of this enrichment space with another enrichment that accommodates discontinuities in the pressure gradient has also been explored, exhibiting excellent results in problems involving jumps in the density or the volume forces. The concentrations of the platinum-group elements (PGE) Ir, Ru, Pt and Pd were determined in 11 abyssal peridotites from ODP Sites 895 and 920, as well in six ultramafic rocks from the Horoman peridotite body, Japan, which is generally thought to represent former asthenospheric mantle. Individual oceanic peridotites from ODP drill cores are characterized by variable absolute and relative PGE abundances, but the average PGE concentrations of both ODP suites are very similar. This indicates that the distribution of the noble metals in the mantle is characterized by small-scale heterogeneity and large-scale homogeneity. The mean Ru/Ir and Pt/Ir ratios of all ODP peridotites are within 15% and 3%, respectively, of CI-chondritic values. These results are consistent with models that advocate that a late veneer of chondritic material provided the present PGE budget of the silicate Earth. The data are not reconcilable with the addition of a significant amount of differentiated outer core material to the upper mantle. Furthermore, the results of petrogenetic model calculations indicate that the addition of sulfides derived from percolating magmas may be responsible for the variable and generally suprachondritic Pd/Ir ratios observed in abyssal peridotites. Ultramafic rocks from the Horoman peridotite have PGE signatures distinct from abyssal peridotites: Pt/Ir and Pd/Ir are correlated with lithophile element concentrations such that the most fertile lherzolites are characterized by non-primitive PGE ratios. This indicates that processes more complex than simple in-situ melt extraction are required to produce the geochemical systematics, if the Horoman peridotite formed from asthenospheric mantle with chondritic relative PGE abundances. In this case, the PGE results can be explained by melt depletion accompanied or followed by mixing of depleted residues with sulfides, with or without the addition of basaltic melt.

When non linear physical systems of infinite extent are modelled, such as tunnels and perforations, it is necessary to simulate suitably the solution in the infinite as well as the non linearity. The finite element method (FEM) is a well known procedure for simulating the non linear behavior. However, the treatment of the infinite field with domain truncations is often questionable. On the other hand, the boundary element method (BEM) is suitable to simulate the infinite behavior without truncations. Because of this, by the combination of both methods, suitable use of the advantages of each one may be obtained. Several possibilities of FEM-BEM coupling and their performance in some practical cases are discussed in this paper. Parallelizable coupling algorithms based on domain decomposition are developed and compared with the most traditional coupling methods.

ABSTRACT The structural concrete clearly remains the most used material in construction due to its strength, rigidity and structural design flexibility. The calculation of concrete structures using beams and beam-column is complex as consequence of the coupling phenomena between stresses and of its nonlinear behaviour. The models most commonly used for analysis are the Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko. The second model is strongly recommended when the relationship thickness/span is not small or in case the elements are heavily reinforced. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse the beam and beam-column elements with shear deformation in nonlinear regime, applying the concept of Equivalent Linear Structural Element (ELSE). This concept is basically to solve the problem of a structural element in nonlinear regime, transforming it into an equivalent linear structural element, so that both elements have the same deformations and the same stresses. Firstly, a comparative study of the various proposals of applying shear deformation, of various constitutive and sectional models of structural concrete, and of the nonlinear calculation methods (using finite element methods) was carried out. Considering that the resolution of nonlinear problem is based on solving the successive linear problem, using homotopy process, the linear problem of Timoshenko beam and beam-columns is resolved by FEM, using the exact nodal solutions (ENS) and equivalent distributed load of any order. Thus, the accurate solution approximation can be obtained with very few finite elements for not only nodes, but also for inside of elements. The concept ELSE is introduced to analyse a bar of nonlinear material, subjected to axial forces. The same bar is then used for other nonlinear beam and beam-column analysis with shear deformation. It is noted that, for the last analyses, the solution of a structural element in nonlinear regime is equal to that of linear regime, in which the piecewise-stiffness is constant, the moments and fictitious point loads need to be added at nodes of each element, as well as the fictitious distributed moment on element. Two methods have been developed for analysis: one for isostatic problem and other more general, applicable for both isostatic and hiperstatic problem. The first method determines the ELSE, and then the calculation of this piece is performed by FEM-ENS that now is in linear regime. The general method uses the homotopy that transforms iteratively linear constitutive laws into nonlinear laws of material. When combined with FEM, the ELSE and the solution of the original problem are determined at the end of the whole process. The general method is well known as a procedure closed to Newton-Raphson procedure but presents an advantage that allows displaying deformations of the piece in nonlinear regime, in both qualitative and quantitative way. Since it is possible to observe the modification of stiffness (flexural and shear) in each step of process and also the evolution of the fictitious actions. Moreover, the results compared with those published in the literature indicate that the ELSE concept offers a direct and efficient way to analyze with very good accuracy the problems associated with beams and beams columns in which, by typology, the effects of shear cannot be neglected.

A refined nonlinear heat transfer model of a mouse has been developed to simulate the transient temperature rise in a neoplastic tumour and neighbouring tissue during regional hyperthermia using a 150 kHz inductive coil. In this study, we incorporate various bio-energetic enhancements to the heat transfer equation and numerical validations based on experimental findings for the mouse, in terms of nonlinear metabolic heat production, homeothermy, blood perfusion parameters, thermoregulation, psychological and physiological effects. The discretized bio-heat transfer equation has been validated with the commercial software FEMLAB on a canonical multi-sphere object before applying the scheme to the inhomogeneous mouse voxel phantom. The time-dependent numerical results of regional hyperthermia of mouse thigh have been compared with the available experimental temperature results with only a few small disparities. During the first 20 min of local unfocused heating, the temperature in the tumour and the surrounding tissue increased by around 7.5 degrees C. The objective of this preliminary study was to develop a validated electrothermal numerical scheme for inductive hyperthermia of a small mammal with the intention of expanding the model into a complete numerical solution involving ferromagnetic nanoparticles for targeted heating of tumours at low frequencies. In addition, the numerical scheme herein could assist in optimizing and tailoring of focused electromagnetic fields for hyperthermia.

This Handbook has been prepared by the Iowa DOT as a guide and supplement to the MUTCD. It provides in one document a large number of illustrations which can be easily adapted to specific conditions by field personnel. It is intended to supersede all previous non-conforming standards now being used throughout the state and to provide uniform guidelines for all agencies, public and private, who must conduct construction and maintenance activities on the streets and highways of the state. The illustrations contained herein serve as a quick reference for field personnel to follow, however, no amount of detailed instructions can adequately cover every situation. For this reason, sound judgment is required in using these illustrations to cover actual field conditions.

This paper is concerned with the discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the Maxwell eigenproblem. After reviewing the theory developed in [5], we present a set of numerical experiments which both validate the theory, and provide further insight regarding the practical performance of discontinuous Galerkin methods, particularly in the case when non-conforming meshes, characterized by the presence of hanging nodes, are employed.
