The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth performance of Brycon amazonicus larvae fed with probiotic consisting of Bacillus subtilis, bioencapsulated in Artemia salina at different doses. Six treatments were used: T0 = control (without probiotic), T2.5 = 2.5 g, T5.0 = 5.0 g, T7.5 = 7.5 g, T10.0 = 10.0 g and T12;5 = 12.5 g per liter of probiotic when fed with A. saline (4h before feeding the larvae); and per kilogram of feed (commercial powder with 40% crude protein) in the next phase. The results showed heterogeneity with regard to growth, indicating that larvae fed with probiotic had no influence on cannibalism.

Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO), or heaves, is a naturally occurring asthma-like disease that is related to sensitisation and exposure to mouldy hay and has a familial basis with a complex mode of inheritance. A genome-wide scanning approach using two half-sibling families was taken in order to locate the chromosome regions that contribute to the inherited component of this condition in these families. Initially, a panel of 250 microsatellite markers, which were chosen as a well-spaced, polymorphic selection covering the 31 equine autosomes, was used to genotype the two half-sibling families, which comprised in total 239 Warmblood horses. Subsequently, supplementary markers were added for a total of 315 genotyped markers. Each half-sibling family is focused around a severely RAO-affected stallion, and the phenotype of each individual was assessed for RAO and related signs, namely, breathing effort at rest, breathing effort at work, coughing, and nasal discharge, using an owner-based questionnaire. Analysis using a regression method for half-sibling family structures was performed using RAO and each of the composite clinical signs separately; two chromosome regions (on ECA13 and ECA15) showed a genome-wide significant association with RAO at P < 0.05. An additional 11 chromosome regions showed a more modest association. This is the first publication that describes the mapping of genetic loci involved in RAO. Several candidate genes are located in these regions, a number of which are interleukins. These are important signalling molecules that are intricately involved in the control of the immune response and are therefore good positional candidates.

Factors that affect naïve T cell proliferation in syngeneic lymphopenic hosts were investigated. 2C T cell receptor (TCR) transgenic T cells lacking both CD8 and CD4 survived but hardly proliferated. Proliferation of CD8+ 2C cells was proportional to the abundance of cognate peptide/MHC complexes and was severely inhibited by injection of anti-CD8 antibody. Weakly reactive self-peptides slightly enhanced CD8+ 2C cell proliferation whereas a potent agonist peptide promoted much more rapid proliferation, but inflammation-stimulating adjuvant had only a small effect on the rate of cell proliferation. The findings suggest that under uniform lymphopenic conditions, the widely different rates of proliferation of T cells expressing various TCR, or the same TCR in the presence or absence of CD8, reflect the strength of interaction between TCR and MHC associated with particular self-peptides.

Registration of births, recording deaths by age, sex and cause, and calculating mortality levels and differentials are fundamental to evidence-based health policy, monitoring and evaluation. Yet few of the countries with the greatest need for these data have functioning systems to produce them despite legislation providing for the establishment and maintenance of vital registration. Sample vital registration (SVR), when applied in conjunction with validated verbal autopsy, procedures and implemented in a nationally representative sample of population clusters represents an affordable, cost-effective, and sustainable short- and medium-term solution to this problem. SVR complements other information sources by producing age-, sex-, and cause-specific mortality data that are more complete and continuous than those currently available. The tools and methods employed in an SVR system, however, are imperfect and require rigorous validation and continuous quality assurance; sampling strategies for SVR are also still evolving. Nonetheless, interest in establishing SVR is rapidly growing in Africa and Asia. Better systems for reporting and recording data on vital events will be sustainable only if developed hand-in-hand with existing health information strategies at the national and district levels; governance structures; and agendas for social research and development monitoring. If the global community wishes to have mortality measurements 5 or 10 years hence, the foundation stones of SVR must be laid today.

Bond lengths [1.512(5)A] and angles [109.2 (3) °] at the phenyl substitution site are comparable with those in other molecules. The bond angle at the nitro substitution site C(7)-C(8)-C(9) is 122.9 (3) ° owing to the electron-withdrawing character of the nitro group. The pyran ring adapts a half-chair conformation.

A partically purified enzyme from Arthrobacter synephrinum was found to catalyse the conversion of (+/-)-synphrine into p-hydroxyphrenylacetaldehyde and methylamine. The enzyme is highly specific for synephrine and is distinctly different from monoamine oxidase.

The effect of phenobarbital on the rates of the synthesis of the protein and heme moieties of cytochrome P-450 has been studied. For this purpose, cytochrome P-450 has been partially purified as its P-420 derivative and the labeled amino acid incorporation into the protein has been studied after subjecting a partially purified preparation to sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis. The incorporation studies into the protein species after sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis reveal that the drug primarily accelerates the rate of apoprotein synthesis followed by an increase in the rate of heme synthesis. The messenger for apocytochrome P-450 appears to be fairly stable.

Silver iodide-based fast ion conducting glasses containing silver phosphate and silver borate have been studied. An attempt is made to identify the interaction between anions by studying the chemical shifts of31P and11B atoms in high resolution (HR) magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra. Variation in the chemical shifts of31P or11B has been observed which is attributed to the change in the partial charge on the31P or11B. This is indicative of the change in the electronegativity of the anion matrix as a whole. This in turn is interpreted as due to significant interaction among anions. The significance of such interaction to the concept of structural unpinning of silver ions in fast ion conducting glasses is discussed.
