Part I.

The stoichiometry and kinetics of the reaction between Co(CN5H3- and HgX2 (X = CN, OH) have been investigated. The products of the reaction are two new complexes, [(NC)5Co-HgX]3- and [(NC)5Co-Hg-Co(CN)5]6-, whose spectra are reported. The kinetic measurements produced a value for the forward rate constant of the reaction Co(CN)5H3- + OH- k1/k-1 Co(CN)54- +H2O, k1 = (9.7 ± 0.8) x 10-2 M-1 sec-1 at 24°C, and an equilibrium constant for the reaction K = 10-6 M-1.

Part II.

Unusually large and sharp "adsorption waves" appear in cyclic voltammograms of Co(CN)53- and several cobalt(III) pentacyano complexes at stationary mercury electrodes. The nature of the adsorbed species and the reasons for the absence of the adsorption waves in polarograms taken with a d.m.e. have been examined. The data are compatible with the adsorption, in all cases, of a coordinatively unsaturated cobalt(II) complex, Co(CN)42-, by means of a cobalt-mercury bond. When the resulting adsorbed complex is reduced, a series of subsequent chemical and electrode reactions is initiated in which three faradays of charge are consumed for each mole of adsorbed complex. The adsorption of the anionic complex strongly retards the reduction of other negatively charged complexes.

Part III.

A number of formal redox potentials for RuIII (NH3)5L + e = RuII (NH3)5L and RuIII(NH3)4L2 + e = RuII (NH3)4L2 (where L is various ligands) has been measured by cyclic voltammetry, potentiometry, and polarography and are discussed in terms of the properties of the ligands, such as π-accepting capability. Reduction of coordinated pyrazine in the complexes, Ru(NH3)5 Pz2+, cis- and trans-Ru(NH3)4Pz22+, on a mercury electrode has been observed. The behavior of this reduction in various acidity of the solution as well as the reoxidation of the reduction products are discussed.

The electronic structure, elastic constants, Poisson's ratio, and phonon dispersion curves of UC have been systematically investigated from the first-principles calculations by the projector-augmented-wave (PAW) method. In order to describe precisely the strong on-site Coulomb repulsion among the localized U 5f electrons, we adopt the local density approximation (LDA) + U and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) + U formalisms for the exchange correlation term. We systematically study how the electronic properties and elastic constants of UC are affected by the different choice of U as well as the exchange-correlation potential. We show that by choosing an appropriate Hubbard U parameter within the GGA + U approach, most of our calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Therefore. the results obtained by the GGA + U with effective Hubbard parameter U chosen around 3 eV for UC are considered to be reasonable. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the physical behavior of Ru atom in silicon in this paper. Two energy levels E(0.58) and H(0.34) were observed. The pure substitutional Ru in silicon was responsible for the H(0.34), and the E(0.58) was introduced by a complex of a Ru atom and a vacancy (or vacancies). By use of scattered wave-X-alpha (SW-X-alpha) cluster method the theoretical calculation of electronic states for substitutional Ru atom in silicon has been performed. The results obtained were compared with those of experimental measurements.

We report two new heteroleptic polypyridyl ruthenium complexes, coded C101 and C102, with high molar extinction coefficients by extending the pi-conjugation of spectator ligands, with a motivation to enhance the optical absorptivity of mesoporous titania film and charge collection yield in a dye-sensitized solar cell. On the basis of this C101 sensitizer, several DSC benchmarks measured under the air mass 1.5 global sunlight have been reached.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) ruthenium [Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)] has received considerable attention. By immobilizing Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) on an e electrode surface, solid-state ECL provides several advantages over solution-phase ECL, such as reducing consumption of expensive reagent, simplifying experimental design and enhancing the ECL signal. This review presents the state of the art in solid-state ECL of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+).

In this work, an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reagent bis(2,2'-bipyridine)(5,6-epoxy-5,6-dihydro-[1,10]phenanthroline)ruthenium complex (Ru-1) was synthesized, and its electrochemical and ECL properties were characterized. The synthesis of Ru-1 was confirmed by IR spectra, element analysis, and H-1 NMR spectra. For further study, its UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra were investigated. Ru-1 also exhibited quasi-reversible Ru-II/Ru-III redox waves in acetonitrile solution. The aqueous ECL behaviors of Ru-1 were also studied in the absence and in the presence of tripropylamine.

Quantitative electrochemilumineseence (ECL) detection of a model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was achieved via biotin-avidin interaction using an avidin-based sensor and a well-developed ECL system of tris(2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium(II) derivative as label and tri-n-propylamine (TPA) as coreactant. To detect the protein, avidin was linked to the glassy carbon electrode through passive adsorptions and covalent interaction with carboxylate-terminated carbon nanotubes that was used as binder to immobilize avidin onto the electrode. Then, biotinylated BSA tagged with tris(2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium(II) label was attached to the prepared avidin surface.

A capillary electrophoresis method coupled with electrochemiluminescence detection for the analysis of quinolizidine alkaloids was established, especially, oxymatrine (OMT) which could not be measured by previous electrochemiluminescence methods was detected sensitively herein. Complete separation of sophoridine (SR), matrine (MT) and OMT was achieved within 13 min using a background electrolyte of 50mM phosphate buffer at pH 8.4 and a separation voltage of 15 kV. The calibration curves showed a linear range from 2.8 x 10(-8) to 4.4 x 10(-7) M for SR, 2.7 x 10(-8) to 4.4 x 10(-7) M for MT.

A novel method for immobilization of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2) on electrode surfaces based on the vapor-surface sol-gel deposition strategy is first demonstrated in this paper. Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 immobilized sol-gel (Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2/sol-gel) films were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). These results showed that Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2 was successfully incorporated into the silica sol-gel film. it was found that many irregular Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2/sol-gel clusters were formed on surfaces through one deposition and thick sol-gel films were observed after further deposition.

For the first time, CEC was coupled with tris(2,2-bipyridyl) ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescence detection. Efficient CEC separations of proline, putrescine, spermidine and spermine were achieved when the pH of the mobile phase is in the range of 3.5-7.0. The optimum mobile phase for CEC separation is much less acidic than that for CZE separation, which matches better with the optimum pH for Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescence detection and dramatically shortens the analysis time because of larger EOF at higher pH.
