Molecular differentiation by PCR-RFLP technique shows that Antarctic fishes of the genus Notothenia, claimed to be two species, are phenotypic varieties with the same genetic pattern (Table 1)

The taxonomy of Antarctic fishes has been predominantly based on morphological characteristics rather than on genetic criteria. A typical example is the Notothenia group, which includes N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844, N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951 and N. rossii Richardson, 1844. The Polymerase Chain Reaction and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique was used to determine whether N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844 and N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951 are different or whether they are the same species with morphological, physiological and behavioural variability. N. rossii was used as control. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was isolated from muscle specimens of N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844, N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951 and N. rossii, which were collected in Admiralty Bay, King George Island. The DNA was used to amplify a fragment (690 base pairs) of the mitochondrial gene coding region of NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2. Further, the amplicon was digested with the following restriction enzymes: DdeI, HindIII and RsaI. The results showed a variation of the digestion pattern of the fragment amplified between N. rossii, and N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844 or N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951. However, no differences were found between N. coriiceps Richardson, 1844 and N. neglecta Nybelin, 1951, on the grounds of the same genetic pattern shown by the two fish.

Concentration and composition of aerosols over the North Atlantic in August 1995

Data on composition of aerosols are considered. Investigations include electron microscopy, grain size, mineralogical and chemical analyses. Samples of aerosols were collected Cruise 37 of R/V Akademik Mstislav Keldysh along a transatlantic section along 40°-50°N. Variability of concentrations and composition of aerosols with distance from continents is shown: concentrations of aerosols decrease by factor of ten and more. Significant portion of mineral components in aerosols collected over the continent is replaced by organic matter due to mechanical differentiation during transportation. Such anthropogenic components as soot, ash, and combustion spheres were detected in all samples. North African dust was found in one sample in the western part of the section.

Radiocarbon age of bottom sediments from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

Procedures for radiocarbon dating of ocean sediments on board the ship using the benzene variant of the method are described. The main features of the benzene synthesis scheme, together with its differences from the method usually used onshore laboratories, are discussed briefly. Parameters of radiometric installation, in which activity of synthesized benzenes is determined are cited. The method was used successfully during Cruise 14 of R/V Dmitry Mendeleev (45 datings) and Cruise 24 of R/V Akademik Kurchatov (81 datings).

(Table 2) Concentrations of particulate chemical elements in waters of the Pechora Sea

Mineralogy of suspended matter from surface and bottom waters has been studied at two sites in the Barents Sea. Along with terrigenous minerals, particulate matter samples contain authigenic mineral phases of iron and manganese oxyhydroxides. Mn-feroxyhite, Fe-vernadite, goethite, and proto-ferrihydrite have been identified in samples from the surface waters, whereas birnessite and non-ferruginous vernadite have been found in samples from the bottom waters. Formation of suspended manganese minerals in the bottom waters is explained by an additional Mn supply from underlying reduced sediments during their early diagenesis and oxygen depletion in the near-bottom nepheloid layer. Bacteria are supposed to take part in the authigenic mineral formation.
