Offered for sale by a stamp dealer on the Isle of Man was a scrap of blue paper, apparently part of an old envelope or torn off a sealed, folded letter, on which was stuck an attached pair of British postage stamps, each bearing the image of a young Queen Victoria

The Oxford Handbook of Conflict Management in Organizations

New ways of managing conflict are increasingly important features of work and employment in organizations. In the book the world's leading scholars in the field examine a range of innovative alternative dispute resolution (ADR) practices, drawing on international research and scholarship and covering both case studies of major exemplars and developments in countries in different parts of the global economy. Developments in the management of individual and collective conflict at work are addressed, as are innovations in both unionized and non-union organizations and in the private and public sectors.

New practices for managing conflict in organizations are set in the context of trends in workplace conflict and perspectives on how conflict should be understood and addressed. Part 1 examines the changing context of conflict management by addressing the main frameworks for understanding conflict management, the trend in conflict at work, developments in employment rights, and the influence of HRM on conflict management. Part 2 covers the main approaches to conflict management in organizations, addressing both conventional and alternative approaches to conflict resolution. Commemorative stamps, British, American and Canadian, 1974-1977, 1982-1984, 1996.

The Guernsey post office stamps consist of 2 exhibition series souvenir sheets commemorating Major-General Sir Issac Brock, 1769-1812. The stamp was issued in 1996 to celebrate Guernsey’s attendance at Canada’s international stamp exhibition CAPEX 96. The stamps issued by the United States postal service consist of 1 sheet of stamps commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Peace Bridge, 1927-1977. The stamps issued by Canada Post include 5 commemorative day-of-issue envelopes with stamps featuring William Hamilton Merritt and the Welland Canal. This stamp was issued in 1974 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the canal. There is also a set of 4 inscription corner blocks of stamps. These items are contained in an envelope addressed to Mr. J.N. Jackson, St. Catharines, ON. There is also a separate sheet of the same stamp. Also issued by Canada Post are 2 full sheets of stamps, one commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Peace Bridge (1927-1977), and one commemorating 25 years of the St. Lawrence Seaway (1959-1984). Lastly, there are 2 full sheets of stamps commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Royal Henley Regatta, issued in 1982.

Comparing Support Vector Machines with Gaussian Kernels to Radial Basis Function Classifiers

The Support Vector (SV) machine is a novel type of learning machine, based on statistical learning theory, which contains polynomial classifiers, neural networks, and radial basis function (RBF) networks as special cases. In the RBF case, the SV algorithm automatically determines centers, weights and threshold such as to minimize an upper bound on the expected test error. The present study is devoted to an experimental comparison of these machines with a classical approach, where the centers are determined by $k$--means clustering and the weights are found using error backpropagation. We consider three machines, namely a classical RBF machine, an SV machine with Gaussian kernel, and a hybrid system with the centers determined by the SV method and the weights trained by error backpropagation. Our results show that on the US postal service database of handwritten digits, the SV machine achieves the highest test accuracy, followed by the hybrid approach. The SV approach is thus not only theoretically well--founded, but also superior in a practical application.

Virginia Apgar and string music

Virginia Apgar (1909-1974) is one of the most recognized American doctors, worldwide known by his contribution as the developer of the "Apgar test" a method used for the evaluation of newborns all over the world. She had many interests. She was anesthesiologist, a brilliant teacher and researcher, but she also loved lecture, basketball, fishing, golf, philately, and music. She played violin and cello and she interpreted that instruments in various chamber groups. Being motivated by one of her patients, Carleen Hutchinson, a science and music teacher, she made four instruments, viola, violin, cello, and mezzo violin. Nearly twenty years of her death, on October 24 1994, on the occasion of the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the issue by American Postal Service of a stamp honoring her, some of the preferred Dr. Apgar music pieces where performed with the instruments she made. Her life mixed different activities and let invaluable contributions for humanity.

Análise crítica da implantação do programa Gestão da Produtividade Aplicada aos Correios, a partir da ótica da organização da aprendizagem

A presente dissertação enfoca, a partir de um estudo de caso, o Programa de "Gestão da Produtividade Aplicada aos Correios" – GPAC –, numa empresa pública, a Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telégrafos. Este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar criticamente um método para introduzir conceitos, princípios e técnicas de Administração e Engenharia da Produção, a partir de uma ótica de uma organização que aprende – learning organization –, tendo como objeto de análise a ECT. Parte-se de uma perspectiva histórica que procura abordar a evolução do programa "Gestão da Produtividade Aplicada aos Correios" na Organização, desde sua fase inicial, em 1995, até o seu desenvolvimento no momento atual. Descreve-se as principais atividades desencadeadas, seguindo sua ordem cronológica. Após uma fundamentação teórica, descrevendo abordagens de diversos autores sobre aprendizagem organizacional, é analisado o programa GPAC à luz dos pressupostos de organizações de aprendizagem preconizados por Garvin, propondo-se um novo método. Neste novo método são apresentadas algumas alterações e inclusões em relação ao método adotado no programa GPAC, visando auxiliar na eficácia da disseminação e implantação de novos conceitos, princípios e técnicas de Administração e Engenharia de Produção na Empresa.

Valores são critérios utilizados para tomada decisôes. representam a base de nossas ações diárias quando há consonância entre o que fazemos e o que acreditamos realmente importar. o objetivo desta dissertação de mestrado é identificar e analisar os valores subjacentes das pessoas que compõem a Diretoria Regional do Rio de Janeiro dos Correios. para possibilitar a compreensão do que move suas atitudes e comportamentos. Esta proposta refere-se à identificação de valores organizacionais e sua correlação com as estratégias definidas pelos Correios. como meio de esclarecer vínculos que integram a organização ao seu ambiente e antecipar crises e problemas com alternativas bem definidas. Envolve o pressuposto de que se as premissas adot~das em processos decisórios forem consoantes com os referenciais maiores que permeiam o grupo social. haverá a possibilidade de se combater entro pias. catalisar esforços e tornar os resultados representativos para as organizações e para as pessoas que com ela se relacionam.
