Els almogàvers foren un grup de guerrers mercenaris que se singularitzava en el si dels exèrcits de la Corona d'Aragó. Esmentats per Jaume el Conqueridor i descrits per Desclot, són els protagonistes dels capítols en què Ramon Muntaner narra la seva màxima gesta: l'aventura en terres bizantines, a conseqüència de la qual els reis d'Aragó seran ducs d'Atenes i Neopàtria. Posteriorment el seu exemple serà al·legat en temps de dificultat Guerra de Successi, Guerra contra Napoleó fins que la Renaixença els reivindicarà i en farà un mite. El present article estudia com els tractà la literatura catalana, i també la castellana, des dels primers textos i sobretot durant els segles XIX i XX, en un recorregut en què es revela com un mite imperfecte, car els aspectes violents remarcats per la propaganda hel·lènica han estat un llast impossible d'eliminar.

Who Cares? A comparison of informal and formal care provision in Spain, England and the USA

This paper investigates the prevalence of incapacity in performing daily activities and the associations between household composition and availability of family members and receipt of care among older adults with functioning problems in Spain, England and the United States of America (USA). We examine how living arrangements, marital status, child availability, limitations in functioning ability, age and gender affect the probability of receiving formal care and informal care from household members and from others in three countries with different family structures, living arrangements and policies supporting care of the incapacitated. Data sources include the 2006 Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe for Spain, the third wave of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (2006), and the eighth wave of the USA Health and Retirement Study (2006). Logistic and multinomial logistic regressions are used to estimate the probability of receiving care and the sources of care among persons age 50 and older. The percentage of people with functional limitations receiving care is higher in Spain. More care comes from outside the household in the USA and England than in Spain. The use of formal care among the incapacitated is lowest in the USA and highest in Spain.

Performance of Poly-Carb, Inc. Flexogrid Bridge Overlay System, MLR-86-04, 2001

Intrusion of deicing materials and surface water into concrete bridge decks is a main contributor in deck reinforcing steel corrosion and concrete delamination. Salt, spread on bridge decks to melt ice, dissolves in water and permeates voids in the concrete deck. When the chloride content of the concrete in contact with reinforcing steel reaches a high enough concentration, the steel oxidizes. In Iowa, the method used to reduce bridge deck chloride penetration is the application of a low slump dense concrete overlay after the completion of all Class A and Class B floor repairs. A possible alternative to the use of dense concrete overlays, developed by Poly-Carb, Inc., is the MARK-163 FLEXOGRID Overlay System. FLEXOGRID is a two component system of epoxy and urethane which is applied on a bridge deck to a minimum thickness of ¼ inch. An aggregate mixture of silica quartz and aluminum oxide is broadcast onto the epoxy at a prescribed rate to provide deck protection and superior friction properties. The material is mixed on site and applied to the deck in a series of lifts (usually two) until the desired overlay thickness has been attained.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is completing a third five-year review of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Inc., County Road X-23 Superfund site in Lee County, Iowa. The site is also known as the Baier and McCarl subsites. The EPA is inviting public comment on whether the current site remedy continues to be protective of public health and the environment. The Iowa Department of Public Health in cooperation with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) prepared this health consultation to review the current status of the Baier and McCarl subsites and to provide an evaluation of the public health status of these subsites. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has requested the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) Hazardous Waste Site Health Assessment Program to evaluate future health impacts of exposures at the formerly utilized IBP Inc./Tire Chop facility located at 1525 “O” Avenue, Fort Dodge, Iowa. This site has undergone a Targeted Brownfields Assessment conducted by the Contaminated Sites Section of the IDNR. This health consultation addresses potential health risks to people from future exposure to soil within the property boundary, and any health impacts resulting from contaminated groundwater beneath the site property from an evaluation of the data collected during the Targeted Brownfields Assessment. The information in this health consultation was current at the time of writing. Data that emerges later could alter this document’s conclusions and recommendations.

Supremacía del derecho federal sobre el Common Law en materia de requisitos de seguridad y eficacia terapéutica de productos sanitarios. Comentario a Riegel v. Medtronic, Inc. [552 U.S.__ (2008); February 20, 2008]

En Riegel v. Medtronic Inc. (552 U.S.__2008; February 20, 2008), el Sr. Riegel tuvo que ser sometido a un by-pass como consecuencia de la rotura del catéter, fabricado por Medtronic, con el que su médico le practicaba una angioplastia. A pesar de que el catéter había obtenido la autorización de comercialización de la FDA y cumplía los requisitos de seguridad previstos por el sistema regulatorio federal, el Sr. Riegel y su mujer interpusieron una acción de daños contra Medtronic –y no contra el médico- conforme a las reglas de responsabilidad civil objetiva y por negligencia del Common Law neoyorquino. Sin embargo, el Tribunal Supremo federal de los EE.UU., en ponencia del Magistrado Antonin Gregory Scalia, votó, por mayoría de ocho magistrados, rechazar el recurso de la Sra. Riegel y confirmar la sentencia de segunda instancia, desestimatoria de la demanda, porque consideró que la regla de primacía del derecho regulatorio federal sobre seguridad de productos sanitarios [Medical Device Amendments de 1976, 21 U.S.C. Artículo 360k(a)] excluye la aplicabilidad no sólo del derecho regulatorio estatal sobre seguridad de productos sanitarios, sino también del Common Law sobre responsabilidad civil del fabricante.

Russian market entry decision for an e-business company, the case Ampparit Inc.

The aim of the study was to examine foreign operation methods and suggest the entry mode for the Russian E-business market. Ampparit Inc. was chosen as a case company, as it operates in the e-commerce B2B type of the business by providing Witpik - media monitoring service. The concept of foreign operation method was clarified with a specific focus on Russian market peculiarities and E-business. The main focuses of the present work were to figure out the most applicable entry mode for the Russian market in case of e-business company and factors affecting the decision about entry, including risks, barriers and other aspects.

He died on February 27, 1908 in Malahide Township, Norfolk County, Ontario.
