New Ru(II) arene complexes of formula [((6)-p-cym)Ru(N-N)(X)](2+) (where p-cym = para-cymene, N-N = 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) or 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and X = m/p-COOMe-Py, 1-4) were synthesised and characterized, including the molecular structure of complexes [((6)-p-cym)Ru(bpy)(m-COOMe-Py)](2+) (3) and [((6)-p-cym)Ru(bpy)(p-COOMe-Py)](2+) (4) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 1-4 are stable in the dark in aqueous solution over 48 h and photolysis studies indicate that they can photodissociate the monodentate m/p-COOMe-Py ligands selectively with yields lower than 1%. DFT and TD-DFT calculations (B3LYP/LanL2DZ/6-31G**) performed on singlet and triplet states pinpoint a low-energy triplet state as the reactive state responsible for the selective dissociation of the monodentate pyridyl ligands.

A series of commercially useful substituted pyridyl ureas have been synthesized via selenium dioxide-catalyzed reductive carbortylation of substituted nitrobenzene or substituted nitropyridine with amine as co-reagent and carbon monoxide as carbonyl reagent instead of phosgene in one-pot reaction. The recycling reusability of catalyst was also tested. It was also found that selenium dioxide-catalyzed reductive carbonylation of nitroaromatics exhibited reaction-controlled phase-transfer phenomena of the catalyst. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Low temperature heat capacities of N-(p-methylphenyl)-N'-(2-pyridyl)urea were determined by adiabatic calorimetry method in the temperature range from 80 to 370 K. It was found that there was not any heat anomaly in this temperature region. Based on the experimental data, some thermodynamic function results were obtained. Thermal stability and decomposition characteristics analysis of N-(p-methylphenyl)-N'-(2-pyridyl)urea were carried out by DSC and TG. The results indicated that N-(p-methylphenyl)-N'-(2-pyridyl)urea started to melt at ca. 426 K (153degreesC) and the melting peak located at 447.01 K (173.86degreesC). The melting enthalpy was 204.445 kJ mol(-1) (899.6 J g(-1)). The decomposition peak of N-(p-methylphenyl)-N'-(2-pyridyl)urea was found at 499.26 K (226.11degreesC) from DSC curve. This result was similar with that from TG and DTG experiment, in which the mass loss peak was determined as 500.4 K (227.2degreesC).

Five, novel, meso-tetra[4-(3,4,5-trialkoxybenzoate)phenyl]porphyrins and their metal complexes were synthesized and their molecular structures were confirmed by H-1 NMR, FTIR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Mesomorphic studies using DSC, polarizing optical microscope and X-ray diffraction revealed that all compounds exhibited thermotropic columnar mesophases over a wide mesophase temperature range and low liquid crystalline-crystal line transition temperature. Sequentially spectrophotometric titrations by sodium hydroxide of meso-tetraphenylporphyrin derivatives bearing one, two, three, or four p-hydroxyl groups result in new types of spectra. The strong new bands appear in the visible region with splitting or broadening of the Soret band and its significant loss of oscillator strength. To understand the molecular origin of these phenomena, the Resonance Raman (RR) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) experiments are carried out. The results demonstrate that the charges of the deprotonated para-hydroxy substituted meso-tetraphenylporphyrins are localized on the substituents, not delocalized into the pi system of the porphyrin macrocycles and that the ground states of the macrocycles remain essentially unperturbed. Both the related behavior of diprotonated tetrakis(p-(dimethylamino)phenyl) porphyrin and protonated Schiff base porphyrins show that the new bands considered as hyperporphyrin spectra are due to pi(phenoxide anion) --> pi*(porphyrin) transitions, where pi is an orbital on the phenoxide anion substitutent and pi* is a LUMO on the porphyrin.

The first and second generation carbosilane dendrimers with silicon hydride terminated were synthesized, and then reacted with bis(imino)pyridyl containing allyl [4-CH2==CHCH2-2,6-(Pr2C6H3N)-Pr-i==CMe(C5H3N)MeC==N(2,6-'Pr2C6H3)], in the presence of H2PtCl6 as a hydrosilylation catalyst, to afford the first and second generation carbosilane supported ligands. Complexation reactions with FeCl(2)(.)4H(2)O give rise to iron-containing carbosilane dendrimers with FeCl2 moieties bound on the periphery. The metallodendrimers were used as catalyst precursors, activated with modified methylaluminoxane, for the polymerization of ethylene. In the case of low Al/Fe molar ratio, the metallodendrimers display much higher catalytic activity towards ethylene polymerization and produce much higher molecule weight polyethylenes than the corresponding single-nuclear complex under the same conditions.

Sequential deprotonations of meso-(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrins (p-OHTPPH2) in DMF + H2O (V/V = 1:1) mixture have been verified to result in the appearance of hyperporphyrin spectra. However, when the deprotonations of these p-OHTPPH2 are carried out in DMF, the spectral changes differ considerably from those in the mixture mentioned above. At low [OH-], the optical spectra in the visible region are still considered to have characteristics of hyperporphyrin spectra. Further deprotonation at much higher basicity makes the optical spectra form three-banded spectra similar to those in the acidic solution. To clarify the molecular origins of these changes, UV-vis, resonance Raman (RR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR) experiments are carried out. Our data give evidence that p-OHTPPH2 in DMF can be further deprotonated of pyrrolic-H by higher concentrated NaOH, due to an aprotic medium like DMF effectively weakening the basicity of the porphyrin relative to that of the NaOH, and coordinates with two sodium ions (except the sodium ions that interact with the peripherial phenoxide anions) to form the sodium complexes of p-OHTPPH2 (Na2P, to lay a strong emphasis on the sodium ions that coordinate with the central nitrogen atom), which can be regarded as the porphyrin anions being perturbed by the sodium cations due to their highly ionic character.

Three bidentate ligands, 4-phenyl-2-(2-pyridyl)-quinoline (ppq), 6-(carbazol-9-yl)-4-phenyl-2-(2-pyridyl)-quinoline (cpq) and 6-diphenylamino-4-phenyl-2-(2-pyridyl)-quinoline (dpq) and their zinc(II) complexes, have been designed and synthesized. The crystal structure of [Zn(ppq)(2)Cl]PF6 shows that the central zinc atom is coordinated with one chloride and four nitrogen atoms from two ligands. The introduction of an electron-donating substituent such as carbazole or an aromatic amine group at the 6-position of the quinoline moiety can generate colored tunable Zn complexes, and the photoluminescence (PL) wavelength was modulated from 418 nm for [Zn(ppq)(2)Cl]PF6 to 591 nm for [Zn(cpq)(2)Cl]PF6 and 638 nm for [Zn(dpq)(2)Cl]PF6 in CH2Cl2 solution. The electroluminescence spectrum of [Zn(dpq)(2)Cl]PF6 exhibits pure red light emission with the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates (0.63, 0.36) and a maximum at 648 nm.

The adsorbed kinetics, proton transportation in electrochemical redox process of 4-pyridyl hydroquinone (4PHQ) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified Pt electrode were studied by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) in situ. It proved that the electrode was modified by a monolayer and underwent a rapid electron transfer. It was a slow adsorbed kinetic process. The ion transfer in the electrochemical redox at the SAM-modified electrode surface mainly involved into the hydrate hydrogen ion.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) was used to study a series of synthetic cationic porphyrins as the perchlorate and bromide salts. This work presents the analytical results for the porphyrins obtained using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) and 1,8,9-anthratriol as matrices. The selective use of matrix affects ion formation from these porphyrins. By using DHB as the matrix, we not only observed [M - nCIO(4)](+) (n = 1-4) ions, but also obtained [2M - nCIO(4)](+) (n = 2-7) ions from the synthetic cationic porphyrins. The space volume of the side chains (R groups) and the nature of the anions (Br- or CIO4-) affected the relative importance of monomeric and dimeric ions of the porphyrin. The possible mechanisms of desorption and ionization of these cationic porphyrins were also considered in this study. MALDI-TOFMS proved to be a very useful method for obtaining structural information on these synthetic cationic porphyrins. Copyright (C) 1999 John Whey & Sons, Ltd.

Capillary electrophoresis (CE)/electrochemical detection (EC) for the simultaneous detection of hydrazine, methylhydrazine, and isoniazid has been developed with a 4-pyridyl hydroquinone self-assembled microdisk platinum electrode. Such an electrode has very high catalytic ability for hydrazines and they could be detected even at 0.0 V. The responses for hydrazine, methylhydrazine, and isoniazid are linear over 3 orders of detected concentration and of magnitude of 0.2-400 mu M, 0.2-400 mu M, 0.5 mu M-2 mM, with correlation coefficients of 0.9998, 0.9991, and 0.9982, respectively. And they could be detected to levels of 0.1, 0.1 and 0.2 mu M, respectively. This modified electrode was found to be very stable and reproducible when continuously used as detector for capillary electrophoresis for period of at least 4 weeks with no apparent loss of response. 4-Pyridyl hydroquinone on a platinum electrode adsorbs through the pyridine nitrogen forming stable self-assembled layers. The electrocatalytical oxidation of hydrazines was performed by the modified electrode. The overpotential of hydrazines was decreased markedly at the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) electrode. The mechanism of hydrazine oxidation was also investigated. Amperometric detection of hydrazine under zero potential (vs Ag\AgCI\sat. KCl) was exhibited by the SAM electrode used as an electrochemical detector in a flow system. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
