We propose an approach which allows one to construct and use a potential function written in terms of an angle variable to describe interacting spin systems. We show how this can be implemented in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick, here considered a paradigmatic spin model. It is shown how some features of the energy gap can be interpreted in terms of a spin tunneling. A discrete Wigner function is constructed for a symmetric combination of two states of the model and its time evolution is obtained. The physical information extracted from that function reinforces our description of phase oscillations in a potential. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present study, mitochondrial (mt)DNA sequence data were used to examine the genetic structure of fire-eye antbirds (genus Pyriglena) along the Atlantic Forest and the predictions derived from the river hypothesis and from a Last Glacial Maximum Pleistocene refuge paleomodel were compared to explain the patterns of genetic variation observed in these populations. A total of 266 individuals from 45 populations were sampled over a latitudinal transect and a number of phylogeographical and population genetics analytical approaches were employed to address these questions. The pattern of mtDNA variation observed in fire-eye antbirds provides little support for the view that populations were isolated by the modern course of major Atlantic Forest rivers. Instead, the data provide stronger support for the predictions of the refuge model. These results add to the mounting evidence that climatic oscillations appear to have played a substantial role in shaping the phylogeographical structure and possibly the diversification of many taxa in this region. However, the results also illustrate the potential for more complex climatic history and historical changes in the geographical distribution of Atlantic Forest than envisioned by the refuge model. Gamma frequency (about 20–70 Hz) oscillations occur during novel sensory stimulation, with tight synchrony over distances of at least 7 mm. Synchronization in the visual system has been proposed to reflect coactivation of different parts of the visual field by a single spatially extended object. We have shown that intracortical mechanisms, including spike doublet firing by interneurons, can account for tight long-range synchrony. Here we show that synchronous gamma oscillations in two sites also can cause long-lasting (>1 hr) potentiation of recurrent excitatory synapses. Synchronous oscillations lasting >400 ms in hippocampal area CA1 are associated with an increase in both excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) amplitude and action potential afterhyperpolarization size. The resulting EPSPs stabilize and synchronize a prolonged beta frequency (about 10–25 Hz) oscillation. The changes in EPSP size are not expressed during non-oscillatory behavior but reappear during subsequent gamma-oscillatory events. We propose that oscillation-induced EPSPs serve as a substrate for memory, whose expression either enhances or blocks synchronization of spatially separated sites. This phenomenon thus provides a dynamical mechanism for storage and retrieval of stimulus-specific neuronal assemblies.

Recent animal studies highlighting the relationship between functional imaging signals and the underlying neuronal activity have revealed the potential capabilities of non-invasive methods. However, the valuable exchange of information between animal and human studies remains restricted by the limited evidence of direct physiological links between species. In this study we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate the occurrence of 30-70 Hz (gamma) oscillations in human visual cortex, induced by the presentation of visual stimuli of varying contrast. These oscillations, well described in the animal literature, were observed in retinotopically concordant locations of visual cortex and show striking similarity to those found in primate visual cortex using surgically implanted electrodes. The amplitude of the gamma oscillations increases linearly with stimulus contrast in strong correlation with the gamma oscillations found in the local field potential (LFP) of the macaque. We demonstrate that non-invasive magnetic field measurements of gamma oscillations in human visual cortex concur with invasive measures of activation in primate visual cortex, suggesting both a direct representation of underlying neuronal activity and a concurrence between human and primate cortical activity. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. In the absence of external stimuli, the mammalian brain continues to display a rich variety of spontaneous activity. Such activity is often highly stereotypical, is invariably rhythmic, and can occur with periodicities ranging from a few milliseconds to several minutes. Recently, there has been a particular resurgence of interest in fluctuations in brain activity occurring at <0.1 Hz, commonly referred to as very slow or infraslow oscillations (ISOs). Whilst this is primarily due to the emergence of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as a technique which has revolutionized the study of human brain dynamics, it is also a consequence of the application of full band electroencephalography (fbEEG). Despite these technical advances, the precise mechanisms which lead to ISOs in the brain remain unclear. In a host of animal studies, one brain region that consistently shows oscillations at <0.1 Hz is the thalamus. Importantly, similar oscillations can also be observed in slices of isolated thalamic relay nuclei maintained in vitro. Here, we discuss the nature and mechanisms of these oscillations, paying particular attention to a potential role for astrocytes in their genesis. We also highlight the relationship between this activity and ongoing local network oscillations in the alpha (a; ~8-13 Hz) band, drawing clear parallels with observations made in vivo. Last, we consider the relevance of these thalamic ISOs to the pathological activity that occurs in certain types of epilepsy.

In this paper, we present a theoretical study of a Bose-Einstein condensate of interacting bosons in a quartic trap in one, two, and three dimensions. Using Thomas-Fermi approximation, suitably complemented by numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we study the ground sate condensate density profiles, the chemical potential, the effects of cross-terms in the quartic potential, temporal evolution of various energy components of the condensate, and width oscillations of the condensate. Results obtained are compared with corresponding results for a bose condensate in a harmonic confinement.

In the early days of quantum mechanics, Schrödinger noticed that oscillations of a wave packet in a one-dimensional harmonic potential well are periodic and, in contrast to those in anharmonic potential wells, do not experience distortion over time. This original idea did not find applications up to now since an exact one-dimensional harmonic resonator does not exist in nature and has not been created artificially. However, an optical pulse propagating in a bottle microresonator (a dielectric cylinder with a nanoscale-high bump of the effective radius) can exactly imitate a quantum wave packet in the harmonic potential. Here, we propose a tuneable microresonator that can trap an optical pulse completely, hold it as long as the material losses permit, and release it without distortion. This result suggests the solution of the long standing problem of creating a microscopic optical buffer, the key element of the future optical signal processing devices.

A study was conducted to create a pH-responsive layer, in which a small change in the individual polyacid or polybase gel length was transferred into a larger motion that curls up the gel. It was observed that the transfer of motion from a linear displacement into a curved displacement through the geometric design effectively increases the displacement rate. A robust, reversible, and chemically driven mechanical actuator was was produced that demonstrated its response over many pH oscillations. The affine nature of the triblock copolymers, demonstrated for for the polyacid and polybase indicated that the effect will also function at some smaller length scales, which is appropriate for a working biomimetic and soft nanotechnology device. The study also demonstrated the potential applicability of these polymeric gels and suggested the fabrication of related molecular machines and devices based on the principles of soft nanotechnology.

In relaxed wakefulness, the EEG exhibits robust rhythms in the alpha band (8-13 Hz), which decelerate to theta (approximately 2-7 Hz) frequencies during early sleep. In animal models, these rhythms occur coherently with synchronized activity in the thalamus. However, the mechanisms of this thalamic activity are unknown. Here we show that, in slices of the lateral geniculate nucleus maintained in vitro, activation of the metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) mGluR1a induces synchronized oscillations at alpha and theta frequencies that share similarities with thalamic alpha and theta rhythms recorded in vivo. These in vitro oscillations are driven by an unusual form of burst firing that is present in a subset of thalamocortical neurons and are synchronized by gap junctions. We propose that mGluR1a-induced oscillations are a potential mechanism whereby the thalamus promotes EEG alpha and theta rhythms in the intact brain.

The observation of spontaneous oscillations in current during the anodization of InP in relatively high concentrations of KOH electrolytes is reported. Oscillations were observed under potential sweep and constant potential conditions. Well-defined oscillations are observed during linear potential sweeps of InP in 5 mol dm-3 KOH to potentials above ∼1.7 V (SCE) at scan rates in the range of 50 to 500 mV s-1. The oscillations observed exhibit an asymmetrical current versus potential profile, and the charge per cycle was found to increase linearly with potential. More complex oscillatory behavior was observed under constant potential conditions. Periodic damped oscillations are observed in high concentrations of electrolyte whereas undamped sinusoidal oscillations are observed in relatively lower concentrations. In both cases, the anodization of InP results in porous InP formation, and the current in the oscillatory region corresponds to the cyclical effective area changes due to pitting dissolution of the InP surface with the coincidental growth of a thick porous In2O3 film.

We review our recent work on the anodization of InP in KOH electrolytes. The anodic oxidation processes are shown to be remarkably different in different concentrations of KOH. Anodization in 2 - 5 mol dm-3 KOH electrolytes results in the formation of porous InP layers but, under similar conditions in a 1 mol dm-3 KOH, no porous structure is evident. Rather, the InP electrode is covered with a thin, compact surface film at lower potentials and, at higher potentials, a highly porous surface film is formed which cracks on drying. Anodization of electrodes in 2 - 5 mol dm-3 KOH results in the formation of porous InP under both potential sweep and constant potential conditions. The porosity is estimated at ~65%. A thin layer (~ 30 nm) close to the surface appears to be unmodified. It is observed that this dense, near-surface layer is penetrated by a low density of pores which appear to connected it to the electrolyte. Well-defined oscillations are observed when InP is anodized in both the KOH and (NH4)2S. The charge per cycle remains constant at 0.32 C cm-2 in (NH4)2S but increases linearly with potential in KOH. Although the characteristics of the oscillations in the two systems differ, both show reproducible and well-behaved values of charge per cycle.

Reconstructing Northern Hemisphere ice-sheet oscillations and meltwater routing to the ocean is important to better understand the mechanisms behind abrupt climate changes. To date, research efforts have mainly focused on the North American (Laurentide) ice-sheets (LIS), leaving the potential role of the European Ice Sheet (EIS), and of the Scandinavian ice-sheet (SIS) in particular, largely unexplored. Using neodymium isotopes in detrital sediments deposited off the Channel River, we provide a continuous and well-dated record for the evolution of the EIS southern margin through the end of the last glacial period and during the deglaciation. Our results reveal that the evolution of EIS margins was accompanied with substantial ice recession (especially of the SIS) and simultaneous release of meltwater to the North Atlantic. These events occurred both in the course of the EIS to its LGM position (i.e., during Heinrich Stadial –HS– 3 and HS2; ∼31–29 ka and ∼26–23 ka, respectively) and during the deglaciation (i.e., at ∼22 ka, ∼20–19 ka and from 18.2 ± 0.2 to 16.7 ± 0.2 ka that corresponds to the first part of HS1). The deglaciation was discontinuous in character, and similar in timing to that of the southern LIS margin, with moderate ice-sheet retreat (from 22.5 ± 0.2 ka in the Baltic lowlands) as soon as the northern summer insolation increase (from ∼23 ka) and an acceleration of the margin retreat thereafter (from ∼20 ka). Importantly, our results show that EIS retreat events and release of meltwater to the North Atlantic during the deglaciation coincide with AMOC destabilisation and interhemispheric climate changes. They thus suggest that the EIS, together with the LIS, could have played a critical role in the climatic reorganization that accompanied the last deglaciation. Finally, our data suggest that meltwater discharges to the North Atlantic produced by large-scale recession of continental parts of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets during HS, could have been a possible source for the oceanic perturbations (i.e., AMOC shutdown) responsible for the marine-based ice stream purge cycle, or so-called HE's, that punctuate the last glacial period.
