Poly(vinyl alcohol)-borate complexes were evaluated as a potentially novel drug delivery platform suitable for in vivo use in photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) of wound infections. An optimised formulation (8.0%w/w PVA, 2.0% w/w borax) was loaded with 1.0 mg ml(-1) of the photosensitisers Methylene Blue (MB) and meso-tetra (N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphine tetra tosylate (TMP). Both drugs were released to yield receiver compartment concentrations (>5.0 mu g ml(-1)) found to be phototoxic to both planktonic and bicifilm-grown methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a common cause of wound infections in hospitals. Newborn calf serum, used to simulate the conditions prevalent in an exuding wound, did not adversely affect the properties of the hydrogels and had no significant effect on the rate of TMP-mediated photodynamic kill of MRSA, despite appreciably reducing the fluence rate of incident light. However, MB-mediated photodynamic kill of MRSA was significantly reduced in the presence of calf serum and when the clinical isolate was grown in a biofilm. Results support the contention that delivery of MB or TMP using gel-type vehicles as part of PACT could make a contribution to the photodynamic eradication of MRSA from infected wounds. The alkoxylation of a-pinene was carried out over poly(vinyl alcohol) containing sulfonic acid groups, as catalyst. The main product of a-pinene alkoxylation was a-terpinyl methyl ether being also formed bornyl methyl ether, fenchyl methyl ether, limonene and terpinolene as by-products. The absorption band at 1037 cm-1 in the FTIR spectrum of PVA_SSA40 (PVA membrane containing 40% of –OH groups esterified with SSA) which does not appear in the spectrum of PVA, indicates the presence of the sulfonic acid groups. The catalytic activity of PVA with sulfonic acid groups increases when the amount of sulfosuccinic acid used in the polymer crosslinking is increased from 5% to 40%. However, when the crosslinking degree increases from 20% to 40%, the conversion of a-pinene increases only slightly. Good values of selectivity to a-terpinyl methyl ether were obtained over poly(vinyl alcohol) with sulfonic acid groups. A simple kinetic model, which fits experimental concentration data quite well, was developed.

Natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, and polybutadiene rubber were used to replace part of the butadieneacrylonitrile rubber in a 70/30 butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber/ poly(vinyl chloride) blend. Such replacement up to 15% of the total weight of the blend improved the mechanical properties, while decreasing the cost of the blend. Styrenebutadiene rubber could replace butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber up to 30% of the total weight of the blend without deterioration in the mechanical properties.

Novel water-soluble amphiphilic copolymers have been synthesized by free radical copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethylacrylate with vinyl butyl ether. In water these copolymers exhibit lower critical solution temperature, which depends on the content of hydrophobic vinyl butyl ether units. The interaction between these copolymers and poly(acrylic acid) or poly(methacrylic acid) in aqueous solutions results in formation of interpolymer complexes stabilized by hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions. An increase in hydrophobicity of the copolymers leads to the enhancement of their complex formation ability with respect to poly(acrylic acid) and poly(methacrylic acid). Poly(methacrylic acid) forms stronger complexes with the copolymers when compared with poly(acrylic acid). The complexes exhibit dual sensitivity to pH- and temperature and this property may be easily adjusted regulating the strength of interaction. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Poly(vinyl ether) gels SLURPS (Superior Liquid Uptake Resin for Polymer-supported synthesis) with low cross-linking levels have been synthesized for the first time in beaded form using a non-aqueous inverse suspension polymerisation approach. The synthetic protocol was optimized with regards to several parameters including reactions conditions, type and concentration of suspension stabilizer and controlled low temperature addition of co-initiator. Particle size measurements confirm the production of beads with average diameters of 700e950 mm. Optimization of the monomer composition of the poly (vinyl ether) gels resulted in a novel beaded polymer support with considerably improved as well as unique swelling characteristics in solvents ranging from hexane to water. The synthetic utility of the new gel was confirmed by carrying out a set of transformations with complete conversion leading to a useful amino and hydroxy terminated solid-phase precursor resin. Reaction progress could be monitored easily by 1H and 13C gel-phase NMR.

The plastic crystal phase forming N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate organic salt (P13BF4) was combined with 2, 5 and 10 wt.% poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). The ternary 2 wt.% PVP/2 wt.% LiBF4/P13BF4 was also investigated. Thermal analysis, conductivity, optical thermomicroscopy, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (11B, 19F, 1H, 7Li) were used to probe the fundamental transport processes. Both the onset of phase I and the final melting temperature were reduced with increasing additions of PVP. Conductivity in phase I was 2.6 × 10− 4 S cm− 1 5.2 × 10− 4 S cm− 1 1.1 × 10− 4 S cm− 1 and 3.9 × 10− 5 S cm− 1 for 0, 2, 5 and 10 wt.%PVP/P13BF4, respectively. Doping with 2 wt.% LiBF4 increased the conductivity by up to an order of magnitude in phase II. Further additions of 2 wt.% PVP slightly reduced the conductivity, although it remained higher than for pure P13BF4.

The photodegradation of a 1:1 w/w blend of polycaprolactone and poly(vinyl chloride) has been studied by following carbon dioxide emission during UV exposure. Similar measurements were performed for polycaprolactone and poly(vinyl chloride) homopolymers which were prepared and irradiated in the same way. It was found that the blend gave lower CO2 emission than either of the two homopolymers, indicating that the interaction of the two components in the blend provided a beneficial reduction of photodegradation. It is therefore deduced that the detailed morphological characteristics of the blend have a controlling influence over the photo-oxidation. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thermo-responsive materials have been of interest for many years, and have been studied mostly as thermally stimulated drug delivery vehicles. Recently acrylate and methacrylates with pendant ethylene glycol methyl ethers been studied as thermo responsive materials. This work explores thermo response properties of hybrid nanoparticles of one of these methacrylates (DEGMA) and a block copolymer with one of the acrylates (OEGA), with gold nanoparticle cores of different sizes. We were interested in the effects of gold core size, number and type of end groups that anchored the chains to the gold cores, and location of bonding sites on the thermo-response of the polymer. To control the number and location of anchoring groups we using a type of controlled radical polymerization called Reversible Addition Fragmentation Transfer (RAFT) Polymerization. Smaller gold cores did not show the thermo responsive behavior of the polymer but the gold cores did seem to self-assemble. Polymer anchored to larger gold cores did show thermo responsivity. The anchoring end group did not alter the thermoresponsivity but thiol-modified polymers stabilized gold cores less well than chains anchored by dithioester groups, allowing gold cores to grow larger. Use of multiple bonding groups stabilized the gold core. Using block copolymers we tested the effects of number of thiol groups and the distance between them. We observed that the use of multiple anchoring groups on the block copolymer with a sufficiently large gold core did not prevent thermo responsive behavior of the polymer to be detected which allows a new type of thermo-responsive hybrid nanoparticle to be used and studied for new applications.

Poly( ethylene oxide), poly(vinyl alcohol): and their blend in a 40 : 60 mole ratio were doped with aluminum isopropoxide. Their structural, thermal, and electrical properties were studied. Aluminum isopropoxide acts as a Lewis acid and thus significantly influences the electrical properties of the polymers and the blend. It also acts as a scavanger for the trace quantities of water p-resent in them, thereby reducing the magnitude of proton transport. It also affects the structure of polymers that manifests in the thermal transformation and decomposition characteristics.

A series of acrylic impact modifiers (AIMS) with different particle sizes ranging from 55.2 to 927.0 nm were synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization, and the effect of the particle size on the brittle-ductile transition of impact-modified poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was investigated. For each AIM, a series of PVC/AIM blends with compositions of 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15 phr AIM in 100 phr PVC were prepared, and the Izod impact strengths of these blends were tested at 23 degrees C. For AIMs with particle sizes of 55.2, 59.8, 125.2, 243.2, and 341.1 nm, the blends fractured in the brittle mode when the concentration of AIM was lower than 10 phr, whereas the blends showed ductile fracture when the AIM concentration reached 10 phr. It was concluded that the brittle-ductile transition of the PVC/AIM blends was independent of the particle size in the range of 55.2-341.1 nm. When the particle size was greater than 341.1 nm, however, the brittle-ductile transition shifted to a higher AIM concentration with an increase in the particle size. Furthermore, the critical interparticle distance was found not to be the criterion of the brittle-ductile transition for the PVC/AIM blends.

Nonisothermal crystallization and melting behavior of poly(P-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)-poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) blends from the melt were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry using various cooling rates. The results show that crystallization of PHB from the melt in the PHB-PVAc blends depends greatly upon cooling rates and blend compositions. For a given composition, the crystallization process begins at higher temperatures when slower scanning rates are used. At a given cooling rate, the presence of PVAc reduces the overall PHB crystallization rate. The Avrami analysis modified by Jeziorny and a new method were used to describe the nonisothermal crystallization process of PHB-PVAc blends very well. The double-melting phenomenon is found to be caused by crystallization during heating in DSC. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
