Catalytic reactions with different oxidation process were investigated and correlated to the electrochemical properties of the catalysts. The activity of suprafacial reaction is closely related to the area of redox peak, while that of the intrafacial one is to the match of redox potentials. Accordingly, it is supposed that cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement could be a means for predicting the oxidation process in heterogeneous catalysis.

Mechanochemical synthesis has the potential to provide more sustainable preparative routes to catalysts than the current multistep solvent-based routes. In this review, the mechanochemical synthesis of catalysts is discussed, with emphasis placed on catalysts for environmental, energy and chemical synthesis applications. This includes the formation of mixed-metal oxides as well as the process of dispersing metals onto solid supports. In most cases the process involves no solvent. Encouragingly, there are several examples where the process is advantageous compared with the more normal solvent-based methods. This can be because of process cost or simplicity, or, notably, where it provides more active/selective catalysts than those made by conventional wet chemical methods. The need for greater, and more systematic, exploration of this currently unconventional approach to catalyst synthesis is highlighted.

Materials consisting of perovskite-type oxides (ABO3) have been developed in this work for applications in fuel cell cathodes of solid oxide type (SOFC). These ceramic materials are widely studied for this type of application because they have excellent electrical properties, conductivity and electrocatalytic. The oxides LaMnO3, LaFeO3, LaFe0.2Mn0.8O3 e La0.5Fe0.5MnO3 were synthesized by the method of microwave assisted combustion and after sintering at 800°C in order to obtain the desired phases. The powders were characterized by thermogravimetry (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and voltammetric analysis (cyclic voltammetry and polarization curves). The results obtained by XRF technique showed that the microwave synthesis method was effective in obtaining doping oxides with values near stoichiometric. In general, powders were obtained with particle size less than 0.5 μm, having a porous structure and uniform particle size distribution. The particles showed spherical form, irregular and crowded of varying sizes, according to the analysis of SEM. The behavior of the oxides opposite the thermal stability was monitored by thermogravimetric curves (TG), which showed low weight loss values for all samples, especially those of manganese had its structure. By means of Xray diffraction of the samples sintered at 800°C was possible to observe the formation of powders having high levels of crystallinity. Furthermore, undesirable phases such as La2O3 and MnOx were not identified in the diffractograms. These phases block the transport of oxygen ions in the electrode/electrolyte interface, affecting the electrochemical activity of the system. The voltammetric analysis of the electrocatalysts LF-800, LM-800, LF2M8-800 e L5F5M-800 revealed that these materials are excellent electrical conductors, because it increased the passage of electrical current of the working electrode significantly. Best performance for the oxygen reduction reaction was observed with iron-rich structures, considering that the materials obtained have characteristics suitable for use in fuel cell cathodes of solid oxide type

Perovskite type oxides have been intensively studied due to their interesting optical, electrical, and catalytic properties. Among perovskites the alkaline earth stannates stand out, being strontium stannates (SrSnO3) the most important material in ceramic technology among them due to their wide application as dielectric component. SrSnO3 has also been applied as stable capacitor and humidity sensor. In the present work, SrSnO3:Cu was synthesized by polymeric precursor method and heat treated at 700, 800, and 900 A degrees C for 4 h. After that, the material was characterized by thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Results indicated three thermal decomposition steps and confirmed the presence of strontium carbonate and Cu2+ reduction to Cu+ at higher dopant amounts. XRD patterns indicated that the perovskite crystallization started at 700 A degrees C with strontiatite (SrCO3) and cassiterite (SnO2) as intermediate phases, disappearing at higher temperatures. The amount of secondary phase was reduced with the increase in the Cu concentration.

The effects of small fractions of calcium (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.20) on the structure and the catalytic properties of La2-xCaxCuO4 peroviskites have been investigated. The samples have been synthesized using the co-precipitation method. Perovskite-type oxides were characterized by XRD, TPR, XPS, XANES, SEM, and TEM. Catalytic tests for the water gas shift reaction (WGSR) were carried out in a tubular reactor at 290 degrees C. All samples showed a well-defined perovskite structure with surface areas between 6 and 18 m(2) g(-1). The partial substitution of La by Ca enhanced the stability of the perovskites and increased their reduction temperature. All catalysts were actives for WGSR, and the best catalytic performance was obtained for the La1.85Ca0.15CuO4 catalyst, but the samples with 5 and 10% of Ca had the best TOF values for reaction. These results can be associated to promoter effect of calcium, the high surface area, and the reducible species Cu-0 and Cu1+. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Setf-supported asymmetric hollow-fiber membranes of mixed oxygen-ionic and electronic conducting perovskite Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCF) were prepared by a combined phase-inversion and sintering technique. The starting inorganic powder was synthesized by combined EDTA-citrate complexing process followed by thermal treatment at 600 degrees C. The powder was dispersed in a polymer solution and then extruded into hollow-fiber precursors through a spinneret. ne fiber precursors were sintered at elevated temperatures to form gastight membranes, which were characterized by SEM and gas permeation tests. Performance of the hollow fibers in air separation was both experimentally and theoretically studied at various conditions. The results reveal that the oxygen permeation process was controlled by the slow oxygen surface exchange kinetics under the investigated conditions. The porous inner surface of the prepared perovskite hollow-fiber membranes considerably favored the oxygen permeation. The maximum oxygen flux measured was 0.031 mol-m(-2).s(-1) at 950 degrees C with the sweep gas flow rate of 0.522 mol(.)m(-2).s(-1). To improve the oxygen flux of BSCF perovskite membranes, future work should be focused on surface modification rather than reduction of the membrane thickness. Perovskite oxides LaTi1-xMgxO3 (x = 0.25, 0.5) were synthesized using high-pressure and-temperature method. LaTi0.75Mg0.25O3 is a new compound. This new synthesis route has some advantages. XRD analysis showed that the x = 0.25 sample belongs to cubic perovskite-type structure and the a = 0.5 sample belongs to orthorhombic perovskite-type structure. EPR measurement indicated that Ti ions were in mixed valence state of +3 and +4. IR measurement indicated that the vibration frequency and width of BO6 octahedron stretching vibration absorption band decreases with the increasing of x. The valence state of Ti ions can be altered by high-pressure and-temperature. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A series of Sr2+ doped perovskite like oxides La2-xSrxCuO4-lambda (x = 0 similar to 1) were prepared, the structure, lattice parameters, content of Cu3+, oxygen vacancies created by Sr2+ substitution and composition of these complex oxides were studied by XRD and iodic titration method. The redox ability, active oxygen species and surface image were evaluated and analyzed with TPD, TG, XPS and SEM measurements. The catalytic activity for ammonia oxidation over these oxides was tested, and the relationship among the catalytic properties, structure, nonstoichiometric oxygen, redox ability and surface behavior were correlated and some information on the mechanism of ammonia oxidation was obtained.

A novel compound for carbon capture and storage (CCS) applications, the 6H perovskite Ba4Sb2O9, was found to be able to absorb CO2 through a chemical reaction at 873 K to form barium carbonate and BaSb2O6. This absorption was shown to be reversible through the regeneration of the original Ba4Sb 2O9 material upon heating above 1223 K accompanied by the release of CO2. A combined synchrotron X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric, and microscopy study was carried out to characterize first the physical absorption properties and then to analyze the structural evolution and formation of phases in situ. Importantly, through subsequent carbonation and regeneration of the material over 100 times, it was shown that the combined absorption and regeneration reactions proceed without any significant reduction in the CO2 absorption capacity of the material. After 100 cycles the capacity of Ba4Sb2O9 was ∼0.1 g (CO 2)/g (sorbent), representing 73% of the total molar capacity. This is the first report of a perovskite-type material showing such good properties, opening the way for studies of new classes of inorganic oxide materials with stable and flexible chemical compositions and structures for applications in carbon capture. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

We investigated the structural, elastic, and electronic properties of the cubic perovskite-type BaHfO3 using a first-principles method based on the plane-wave basis set. Analysis of the band structure shows that perovskite-type BaHfO3 is a wide gap indirect semiconductor. The band-gap is predicted to be 3.94 eV within the screened exchange local density approximation (sX-LDA). The calculated equilibrium lattice constant of this compound is in good agreement with the available experimental and theoretical data reported in the literatures. The independent elastic constants (C-11, C-12, and C-44), bulk modules B and its pressure derivatives B', compressibility beta, shear modulus G, Young's modulus Y, Poisson's ratio nu, and Lame constants (mu, lambda) are obtained and analyzed in comparison with the available theoretical and experimental data for both the singlecrystalline and polycrystalline BaHfO3. The bonding-charge density calculation make it clear that the covalent bonds exist between the Hf and 0 atoms and the ionic bonds exist between the Ba atoms and HfO3 ionic groups in BaHfO3. The solid solutions of CdYFeWO7, which are cubic pyrochlores of the type A(2)B(2)O(7), have been prepared and their structures were determined using Ab initio method. Rietveld refinement of the powder XRD data showed that CdYFeWO7 adopted cubic (Fd-3m) structure, while oxides crystallized in a defect-pyrochlore structure where both O (48f) and O'(8b) sites were partially occupied, and the frustrated cations sublattice precluded long range ordering of Fe/W in the pyrochlore structure. Charge distribution analysis also suggested incomplete occupation of different oxygen sites, thus the compound was non-stoichiometric, with the formula CdYFeW0.982O6.94, Magnetic measurements were carried out to find that Fe ions were in the high spin trivalent state. Curie Weiss paramagnetism down to similar to 5 K and the characteristic superposition between FC and ZFC suggested spin liquid rather than spin glass state.

Among complex oxides containing rare earth and manganese BaLn(2)Mn(2)O(7)( Ln = rare earth) with the layered perovskite type and Ln(2)(Mn, M)O-7 with pyrochlore-related structure were studied since these compounds show many kinds of phases and unique phase transitions. In BaLn(2)Mn(2)O(7) there appear many phases, depending on the synthetic conditions for each rare earth. The tetragonal phase of so-called Ruddlesden-Popper type is the fundamental structure and many kinds of deformed modification of this structure are obtained. For BaEu2Mn2O7 at least five phases have been identified from the results of X-ray diffraction analysis with the space group P4(2)/mnm, Fmmm, Immm and A2/m in addition to the fundamental tetragonal I4/mmm phase. In the pyrochlore-related type compounds, Ln(2)Mn(2-x)M(x)O(7)(M = Ta, Nb, W etc), there also appear several phases With different crystal structures. With regard to every rare earth, Ln(2)MnTaO(7) phase is stable only for excess Ta and can be obtained under high oxygen partial pressure process. This group has trigonal structure with zirkelite type ( P3(1)21 space group).

The activities of perovskites depend on compositions and preparation methods. Various perovskites, La1-xMxMnO3 (M=Ag, Sr, Ce, La), have been prepared by two different methods (co-precipitation and spray decomposition). The new preparation method, spray decomposition, produced perovskites of a high surface area of over 10 m(2)/g. The catalytic activities for CH4 and CO oxidation have been studied on a series of catalysts, La1-xMxMnO3. The perovskite-type oxide, La0.7Ag0.3MnO3, shows the highest catalytic activity: the complete conversion of CO and CH4 at 370 and 825 K, respectively. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Perovskite type piezoelectric and manganese oxide materials have gained a lot of attention in the field of device engineering. Lead zirconium titananium oxide (PbZri.iTiiOa or PZT) is a piezoelectric material widely used as sensors and actuators. Miniaturization of PZTbased devices will not only perfect many existing products, but also opens doors to new applications. Lanthanum manganese oxides Lai-iAiMnOa (A-divalent alkaline earth such as Sr, Ca or Ba) have been intensively studied for their colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) properties that make them applicable in memory cells, magnetic and pressure sensors. In this study, we fabricate PZT and LSMO(LCMO) heterostructures on SrTiOa substrates and investigate their temperature dependency of resistivity and magnetization as a function of the thickness of LSMO(LCMO) layer. The microstructure of the samples is analysed through TEM. In another set of samples, we study the effect of application of an electric field across the PZT layer that acts as an external pressure on the manganite layer. This verifies the correlation of lattice distortion with transport and magnetic properties of the CMR materials.
