This work is concerned with implicit second order abstract differential equations with nonlocal conditions. Assuming that the involved operators satisfy sonic compactness properties, we establish the existence of local mild solutions, the existence of global mild solutions and the existence of asymptotically almost periodic solutions.

In this paper we study the approximate controllability of control systems with states and controls in Hilbert spaces, and described by a second-order semilinear abstract functional differential equation with infinite delay. Initially we establish a characterization for the approximate controllability of a second-order abstract linear system and, in the last section, we compare the approximate controllability of a semilinear abstract functional system with the approximate controllability of the associated linear system. Objective: To evaluate the importance of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B (RANK)/receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegerin (OPG) modulation in active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA) patients with and without bone erosions. Methods: Thirty female patients (mean age 11.07 +/- 3.77 years, range 4-17 years) with active pJIA and 30 healthy gender-and age-matched controls were consecutively selected for this study. All involved articulations were assessed by X-ray and examined for the presence of bone erosions. The serum levels of RANKL and OPG were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Patients with active pJIA had higher levels of serum RANKL than controls [2.90 (0.1-37.4) vs. 0.25 (0.1-5.7) pg/mL, p=0.007] and a lower OPG/RANKL ratio [21.25 (1.8-897.6) vs. 347.5 (9-947.8), p=0.005]. However, levels of OPG were comparable in both groups [55.24 (28.34-89.76) vs. 64.42 (30.68-111.28) pg/mL, p=0.255]. Higher levels of serum RANKL and a lower OPG/RANKL ratio were also observed in active pJIA patients with bone erosions compared to controls [3.49 (0.1-37.4) vs. 0.25 (0.1-5.7) pg/mL, p=0.0115 and 14.3 (1.8-897.6) vs. 347.5 (9-947.8), p=0.016]. However, RANKL levels and OPG/RANKL ratio were similar in pJIA patients without bone erosion and controls [1.75 (0.1-10.9) vs. 0.25 (0.1-5.7) pg/mL, p=0.055 and 29.2 (3.3-756.8) vs. 347.5 (9-947.8), p=0.281]. Conclusion: These data suggest that active pJIA with bone erosions is associated with high serum levels of RANKL and a low OPG/RANKL ratio, indicating that these alterations may reflect bone damage in this disease.

We studied the anisotropic aggregation of spherical latex particles dispersed in a lyotropic liquid crystal presenting three nematic phases; calamitic, biaxial, and discotic. We observed that in the nematic calamitic phase aggregates of latex particles are formed, which become larger and anisotropic in the vicinity of the transition to the discotic phase, due to a coalescence process. Such aggregates are weakly anisotropic and up to 50 mu m long and tend to align parallel to the director field. At the transition to the discotic phase, the aggregates dissociated and re-formed when the system was brought back to the calamitic phase. This shows that the aggregation is due to attractive and repulsive forces generated by the particular structure of the nematic phase. The surface-induced positional order was investigated by surface force apparatus experiments with the lyotropic system confined between mica surfaces, revealing the existence of a presmectic wetting layer around the surfaces and oscillating forces of increasing amplitude as the confinement thickness was decreased. We discuss the possible mechanisms responsible for the reversible aggregation of latex particles, and we propose that capillary condensation of the N(C) phase, induced by the confinement between the particles, could reduce or remove the gradient of order parameter, driving the transition of aggregates from solidlike to liquidlike and gaslike.

Central Nervous System disorders may cause important functional unbalance in the maintenance of balance and posture. There is no effective rehabilitation for these symptoms until now. Objective: The aim of this paper is to evaluate the use of tongue electrotactile stimulation on patients with central imbalance using BrainPort. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective case series study. We evaluated 8 patients with central imbalance, 6 men and 2 women, with mean age of 67.75 years. The patients were submitted to Computed Dynamic Posturography (CDP) and then received 18 sessions of electrotactile stimulation by BrainPort (R) device for 20 minutes, twice a day. Then they were submitted to a new CDP test and to a self-perception scale to assess symptom remission, partial improvement and no improvement at all. Results: 75% of the patients reported being more stable. There was no improvement in the balance control of the mass center in these patients. Conclusion: The patients were able to use the electrotactile stimulus to improve their balance control.

Adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency is a disorder of the purine metabolism leading to combined immunodeficiency and systemic alterations, including skeletal abnormalities. We report that ADA deficiency in mice causes a specific bone phenotype characterized by alterations of structural properties and impaired mechanical competence. These alterations are the combined result of an imbalanced receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegerin axis, causing decreased osteoclastogenesis and an intrinsic defect of osteoblast function with subsequent low bone formation. In vitro, osteoblasts lacking ADA displayed an altered transcriptional profile and growth reduction. Furthermore, the bone marrow microenvironment of ADA-deficient mice showed a reduced capacity to support in vitro and in vivo hematopoiesis. Treatment of ADA-deficient neonatal mice with enzyme replacement therapy, bone marrow transplantation, or gene therapy resulted in full recovery of the altered bone parameters. Remarkably, untreated ADA-severe combined immunodeficiency patients showed a similar imbalance in RANKL/osteoprotegerin levels alongside severe growth retardation. Gene therapy with ADA-transduced hematopoietic stem cells increased serum RANKL levels and children`s growth. Our results indicate that the ADA metabolism represents a crucial modulatory factor of bone cell activities and remodeling. The trials were registered at www.clinicaltrials.gov as #NCT00598481 and #NCT00599781. (Blood. 2009; 114: 3216-3226)
