Objective: To describe the characteristics [of self-described 'occasional' and 'social' Australian smokers. Design: Analysis of a national cross-sectional survey of smoking patterns, conducted in Australia in 2004. Setting and participants: Australian adults in 2004 who responded to a survey question about self-described smoking status. Main outcome measures: Demographic characteristics, patterns of alcohol and tobacco use, smoking cessation attempts in the past year, and interest in cessation. Results: Smokers who described themselves as 'occasional' and 'social' smokers comprised 29% of all smokers. A significant proportion of occasional and social smokers had been daily smokers, but the majority either believed that they had 'already quit' or had no intention of quitting smoking. Conclusions: Self-ascribed occasional and social smokers potentially represent an important target group for cessation. These types of smokers may be more resistant to public health messages regarding cessation because they do not view their smoking behaviour as presenting a high risk.

Distortion is one type of defect in the weld, which is troublesome for some reasons, especially in thin plate welding. Distortion was found in fibre laser welding processing for 0.7mm thickness Ti6Al4V plate. The purpose of this paper is to understand and evaluate the effect of distortion on stress level by FEA and tensile test. A group of 0.7mm Ti6Al4V plates welded using continuous wave fibre laser. The study of solutions is considered very important to chemist’s education because most of the chemical reactions occur in aqueous medium, being also required to understand other subject such as chemical changes, electrochemical and chemical balance. Nevertheless, it is noticed that many students indicate learning difficulties related to the content of solutions, how to pass among the macro-submicroscopic knowledge levels, and how to solve quantitative problems that demanding the establishment of a stoichiometric ratios. This thesis defended considers the use of contextualized teaching strategies about some subject associated to the study of solution, can foster student learning through reflection and understanding of their own difficulties, besides to provide motivation and active participation. The target group is formed by students of the undergraduate distance education with major in chemistry education of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), and they were chosen because this education system is expanding and its learning difficulties publications number is reduced as well. Thus, the first methodological stage was to identify the student’s main learning difficulties associated to the study of solutions through literature sources. Next, using an adapted script of the Plano Nacional do Livro Didático para o Ensino Médio (PNLEM, Textbook National Plan for High School), the approach of the content of solutions printed in educational materials used by the target group was analyzed. Afterward, a teaching unit was planned in the last methodological stage and, finally, a new teaching unite was given with a sequence of contextualized activities such as video presentation, dialogued lecture, questionnaires application, exercises, and an experiment, where the target group’s main difficulties related to learning of solution were identified. The participants of the teaching unit activities had some learning difficulties in understand concepts of compound, ion, charge, entropy and solubility, as well as to identify the ion charge, interpret statements, decode tables, use the chemical language, perform mathematical calculations and use concentration units, similar results raised in the literature sources. In order to work on these difficulties, these students were encouraged to expose, question and test their ideas about the phenomenon under study, allowing learn from their mistakes and reflect on the organization strategy of scientific explanatory models they use. Therefore, activities and information about learning difficulties presented in this thesis need to be critical reflection object, because it can help both students in the process of acquiring knowledge about the content of solutions and professors in the planning of their lessons.

The electronic journals correspond publishing channels and dissemination of scientific information. Through them, users can spread their studies as well as developing new researches. One of the systems used for creation and e-journals management is the Electronic System for Journal Publishing (SEER), used in the construction of periodic portals, as well as the creation of magazines in isolation. In this purport, it is believed that the management systems and creation of e-journals should be developed (internally and externally) according to the needs of its users. In the case of internal development, some of these processes refer to the copyright registration and submission of articles, which, in turn, are relevant tasks in the editorial process. Thus, the proposed study, thematic Usability of scientific journals, aims to analyze the usability of the copyright registration process and submission of articles in the Electronic System for Journal Publishing through BiblioCanto magazine, part of the Electronic Journals Portal of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). For the realization of the research, two valuation techniques were used: the Usability Test with a total of twenty participants and the Cooperative Evaluation, with the same number of participants separated in four categories considered target audience of that magazine, namely: undergraduate students, graduate students, teachers and librarians. The results indicated that the two analyzed processes (copyright registration and submission of articles) need improvement. In the case of the registration process, the following needs are: signalizing of the conducting registration ambient; description and exclusion of requested information on the registration form. In the process of article submission, it is emphasized improvement of aspects: the early steps to submission, signaling of required fields, concise description of the steps, minimization and review of the steps. To this end, it is believed that in general idea the SEER partially meets the needs of its users regarding the usability of such software.

O projeto EuroEVA pretende obter estimativas da efetividade da vacina antigripal (EV), para a população geral e para o grupo-alvo para o qual é recomendada. Os resultados apresentados correspondem à sua implementação na época 2015/2016. Utilizou-se um delineamento caso-controlo teste negativo, onde os casos, indivíduos com síndrome gripal (SG) e com diagnóstico laboratorial positivo para o vírus da gripe, foram comparados com os controlos, indivíduos com SG e diagnóstico laboratorial negativo para o vírus da gripe. Os participantes foram selecionados entre os doentes com SG observados em consulta de cuidados de saúde primários. Foi recolhida informação clinica e epidemiológica e um exsudado da nasofaringe para diagnóstico laboratorial. A EV foi estimada através de 1- odd ratio de estar vacinado nos casos vs. controlos, ajustado para a idade, presença de doença crónica, número de consultas com médico de família (MF) nos últimos 12 meses, número de coabitantes, nível de escolaridade, sexo e mês de início de sintomas. Entre as semanas 48/2015 e 17/2016, foram recrutados 310 indivíduos com SG sendo que, após exclusão de 26 indivíduos por não cumprirem os critérios de inclusão, foram incluídos 124 casos e 186 controlos. De entre os casos, 89,5% eram positivos para o vírus da gripe do subtipo A(H1) pdm09 e 8,9% para o tipo B/Victoria. Relativamente à vacina antigripal, a cobertura era de 10,5% nos casos e 23,7% nos controlos. Após ajustamento, a EV em 2015/2016 foi de 56,1% (IC95%: 3,5%; 80,0%) e 65,8% (IC95%:12,5%; 86,7%), respetivamente na população geral e no grupo-alvo para a vacinação antigripal. Estes resultados sugerem que a vacina antigripal nesta época conferiu uma proteção moderada. As estimativas da EV estão em linha com resultados publicados por outros países europeus.

OBJETIVO: comparar o crescimento de lactentes filhos de mães adolescentes com o de filhos de mães adultas nos primeiros dois anos de vida. MÉTODOS: estudo de coorte histórica realizado entre 1998 e 2000, comparando o crescimento de dois grupos de crianças do nascimento até completar dois anos de idade. Um dos grupos era constituído por filhos de mães adolescentes (n:127) e o outro por filhos de mães adultas (n:181). Ambos os grupos eram acompanhados regularmente nas duas Unidades Básicas de Saúde da Universidade de São Paulo, integradas ao sistema de público de saúde. Os dados de peso e comprimento, coletados sistematicamente, foram analisados sob a forma de escore Z (NCHS/OMS, 1978). Equações (curvas) de regressão descrevendo o crescimento individual de cada criança foram definidas a partir dos dados coletados. Posteriormente, os valores de escore Z de peso e comprimento em idades exatas (mensais) foram estimados por interpolação, utilizando-se as equações individuais obtidas. RESULTADOS: ao nascimento e aos 24 meses os dois grupos não apresentaram diferença nas médias dos escores Z de peso e comprimento que, contudo, eram inferiores às do referencial (p<0,001). Neste período, apresentaram desempenhos diferentes de crescimento, com uma tendência pior para os filhos de adolescentes, que se afastava da mediana do referencial de maneira significante, (p=0,0008). CONCLUSÃO: Os lactentes de mães adolescentes apresentaram um pior desempenho de crescimento até os dois anos de vida, quando comparados com o dos filhos de mães adultas

Objectives-To investigate the feasibility of selective screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) based on identification of a target group of manageable size defined by risk factors for AAA. Setting-Male residents of Perth, Western Australia, aged 65-83 years, who participated in a randomised controlled trial of ultrasound screening for AAA. Methods-Eligible men were identified from the electoral roll and invited to attend a screening clinic. Those who attended completed a questionnaire, had a limited physical examination, and underwent an ultrasound examination to identify the maximum diameter of the infrarenal aorta. Data on risk factors collected from the first 8995 men seen were used to calculate a multivariate risk score for the remaining 2755 men who were screened. Gentiles of the risk score were used to define potential target groups for screening and the sensitivity and specificity of each of these selective screening strategies were calculated. We repeated the calculation separately for AAAs of at least 30 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm in diameter. Results-We found that screening half of the male population aged 65-83 years would find approximately 75% of AAAs, regardless of their size, whereas screening only current smokers in this population would find approximately 20% of AAAs. Conclusions-Selective screening for AAA using easily recognisable risk factors is feasible but is not worthwhile as approximately 25% of clinically significant cases would be missed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of osteoblastic cells to the composite of Ricinus cominunis polyurethane (RCP) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) incubated in synthetic body fluid (SBF). RCP pure (RCPp) and RCP blended with ALP 6 mg/mL polymer (RCP+ALP) were incubated in SBF for 17 days. Four groups of RCP were tested: RCPp, RCP+ALP, and RCPp and RCP+ALP incubated in SBF (RCPp/SBF and RCP+ALP/SBF). Stem cells from rat bone marrow were cultured in conditions that allowed osteoblastic differentiation on RCP discs and were evaluated: cell adhesion, culture growth, cell viability, total protein content, ALP activity, and bone-like nodule formation. Data were compared by ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test. The group RCP-A P was highly cytotoxic and, therefore, was not considered here. Cell adhesion (p = 0.14), culture growth (p = 0.39), viability (p = 0.46) and total protein content (p = 0.12) were not affected by either RCP composition or incubation in SBE ALP activity was affected (p = 0.0001) as follows: RCPp < RCPp/SBF < RCP+ALP/SBF. Bone-like nodule formation was not observed on all evaluated groups. The composite RCP+ALP prior to SBF incubation is cytotoxic and must not be considered as biomaterial, but the incorporation of ALP to the RCP followed by SBF incubation could be a useful alternative to improve the biological properties of the RCP. While young women have been found to be at additional risk for psychological morbidity after a breast cancer diagnosis, their specific needs in relation to support are not well described. A community development approach was utilized to develop the Young Women's Network, a peer support programme for young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer that addresses their specific psychological and social needs, Central to this approach was the key role of the target group in both the definition of the problem and the generation of the solutions. This article describes the steps involved in developing this programme and guidelines for health professionals and community members who may wish to replicate either the Young Women's Network or this particular approach to programme development. This study retrospectively compared 34 women who had a sacrospinous hysteropexy and 36 who had a vaginal hysterectomy and sacrospinous fixation for symptomatic uterine prolapse. All women underwent independent review and examination, with a mean follow-up of 36 months in the hysterectomy group and 26 months in the hysteropexy group. The subjective success rate was 86% in the hysterectomy group and 78% in the hysteropexy group (P = 0.70). The objective success rate was 72% and 74%, respectively (P = 1.00). The patient-determined satisfaction rate was 86% in the hysterectomy group and 85% in the hysteropexy group (P = 1.00). Background: There has been a proliferation of quality use of medicines activities in Australia since the 1990s. However, knowledge of the nature and extent of these activities was lacking. A mechanism was required to map the activities to enable their coordination. Aims: To develop a geographical mapping facility as an evaluative tool to assist the planning and implementation of Australia's policy on the quality use of medicines. Methods: A web-based database incorporating geographical mapping software was developed. Quality use of medicines projects implemented across the country was identified from project listings funded by the Quality Use of Medicines Evaluation Program, the National Health and Medical Research Council, Mental Health Strategy, Rural Health Support, Education and Training Program, the Healthy Seniors Initiative, the General Practice Evaluation Program and the Drug Utilisation Evaluation Network. In addition, projects were identified through direct mail to persons working in the field. Results: The Quality Use of Medicines Mapping Project (QUMMP) was developed, providing a Web-based database that can be continuously updated. This database showed the distribution of quality use of medicines activities by: (i) geographical region, (ii) project type, (iii) target group, (iv) stakeholder involvement, (v) funding body and (vi) evaluation method. At September 2001, the database included 901 projects. Sixty-two per cent of projects had been conducted in Australian capital cities, where approximately 63% of the population reside. Distribution of projects varied between States. In Western Australia and Queensland, 36 and 73 projects had been conducted, respectively, representing approximately two projects per 100 000 people. By comparison, in South Australia and Tasmania approximately seven projects per 100 000 people were recorded, with six per 100 000 people in Victoria and three per 100 000 people in New South Wales. Rural and remote areas of the country had more limited project activity. Conclusions: The mapping of projects by geographical location enabled easy identification of high and low activity areas. Analysis of the types of projects undertaken in each region enabled identification of target groups that had not been involved or services that had not yet been developed. This served as a powerful tool for policy planning and implementation and will be used to support the continued implementation of Australia's policy on the quality use of medicines.

Peer support interventions for people with cancer, their families, and friends have been widely used throughout the world. The present study reviewed the research literature on psychosocial oncology over the past decade to assess the prevalence and contribution of articles on peer support. Using CD-Rom databases, 25 articles were retrieved for review. In each article, patients or their family members were the target group for supportive interventions, which were primarily for the delivery of peer support and included either a qualitative or quantitative evaluation of the program. A definitional taxonomy for peer support interventions, which identified eight discrete settings, was derived from three key dimensions: style of supervision, interpersonal context, and mode of delivery. The studies suggested that peer support programs help by providing emotional and informational support from the perspective of shared personal experience. However, a paucity of research-particularly randomized controlled trials-was noted. The reasons may include inherent difficulties in isolating for study what is essentially a naturalistically occurring interpersonal dynamic from the complex social and community contexts from which it emanates. The authors discuss the gap between practice and theory in this area and recommend a broader and more inclusive view of supportive care for people with cancer. (C) 2003 by The Haworth Press, Inc. A investigação em curso visa compreender a influência da implementação de um conjunto de tarefas no desenvolvimento do conceito de ângulo em alunos do 5.º ano de escolaridade, procurando responder às seguintes questões: a) Que conceções revelam alunos do 5.º ano de escolaridade relativamente ao conceito de ângulo?; b) Que estratégias utilizam os alunos do 5.º ano de escolaridade na exploração das tarefas utilizadas?; e c) Que aspetos do conceito de ângulo são desenvolvidos pelos alunos através da realização das tarefas propostas? A presente comunicação incide na primeira questão do estudo. Optou-se por uma abordagem metodológica qualitativa de paradigma interpretativo com a modalidade de experiência de ensino. Selecionou-se quatro alunos para constituir o grupo-alvo. Procedeu-se à avaliação diagnóstica das conceções de ângulo dos quatro alunos através da realização, no 1.º Período do ano letivo de 2011/12, de entrevistas clínicas semiestruturadas individuais, gravadas em vídeo. Além das entrevistas, foram usadas, como técnicas de recolha de dados, a observação participante das aulas, videogravadas, bem como a análise de documentos. Para analisar os dados, foram elaboradas categorias analíticas. Os resultados relativos à avaliação diagnóstica evidenciam conceções erradas de ângulo e respetiva amplitude: (a) os ângulos são os lados de polígonos (1 aluna); (b) o comprimento dos segmentos representativos dos lados está relacionado com o tamanho dos ângulos (2 alunos); (c) o comprimento do arco marcando o ângulo está relacionado com o tamanho dos ângulos (3 alunos); (d) nos polígonos côncavos, sãoângulos apenas os de amplitude inferior a 1800 (3 alunos); (e) em figuras que não são polígonos, os ângulos são os espaços entre os segmentos de reta e as linhas curvas (1 aluno); (f) o ângulo é a área entre dois segmentos representativos dos lados (4 alunos); e (g) os ângulos retos são apenas os posicionados na posição usual horizontal/vertical (1 aluna).
