Fresh basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is used in food, phytotherapic industry, and in traditional therapeutic, due to its essential oil content and composition. Nevertheless basil can not be kept for long periods after harvest and its quality can be reduced. This work aimed to assess the influence of the season and harvest time in the postharvest conservation of basil stored for different periods. Basil was harvested at 8 am and 4 pm both in August/1999 and January/2000. Cuttings were conditioned in PVC packages and stored for 3, 6, and 9 days. During storage, chlorophyll content, essential oil content and composition were determined as well as microbiological analyses were carried out. Harvest season and the days of storage influenced the final content of essential oil. There was a linear decrease in the content of essential oil, in the chlorophyll content and in the number of mold and yeast colonies during storage. There was no effect of cropping season or harvest hour on essential oil composition, but the eugenol and linalool content increased during storage. Coliforms were under 0.3 MPN g-1 and the number of Staphylococcus aureus was under 1.0x10² UFC g-1.

The objective of this work was to quantify the accumulation of the major seed storage protein subunits, β-conglycinin and glycinin, and how they influence yield and protein and oil contents in high-protein soybean genotypes. The relative accumulation of subunits was calculated by scanning SDS-PAGE gels using densitometry. The protein content of the tested genotypes was higher than control cultivar in the same maturity group. Several genotypes with improved protein content and with unchanged yield or oil content were developed as a result of new breeding initiatives. This research confirmed that high-protein cultivars accumulate higher amounts of glycinin and β-conglycinin. Genotypes KO5427, KO5428, and KO5429, which accumulated lower quantities of all subunits of glycinin and β-conglycinin, were the only exceptions. Attention should be given to genotypes KO5314 and KO5317, which accumulated significantly higher amounts of both subunits of glycinin, and to genotypes KO5425, KO5319, KO539 and KO536, which accumulated significantly higher amounts of β-conglycinin subunits. These findings suggest that some of the tested genotypes could be beneficial in different breeding programs aimed at the production of agronomically viable plants, yielding high-protein seed with specific composition of storage proteins for specific food applications.

The objective of this work was to assess the effect of different periods of water stress before harvest of pepper-rosmarin (Lippia sidoides) on the contents of essential oil and flavonoids. The experiment was carried out during 270 days of cultivation, with drainage lysimeters, in a completely randomized block design with five treatments: 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days of water suppression before harvest, with four replicates. Fresh and dry matter yield, essential oil content, total flavonoids content, and water potential and temperature of leaves were determined. There was a decrease of approximately 50% in oil content and of 60% in total flavonoid content with the reduction of leaf water potential in 0.3 MPa. Essential oil is more sensitive to water stress than total flavonoids.

Työn tavoitteena oli selvittää Suomenlahden rannalta merkittävän suuruisen alusöljyvahingon jälkeen kerättävän öljyisen jätteen käsittelymahdollisuudet ja -kapasiteetit sekä loppusijoitusmahdollisuudet ja -kapasiteetit Kymenlaakson alueen näkökulmasta. Tarkoituksena oli selvittää, missä jätteiden käsittely voidaan toteuttaa sekä, miten öljyisiä jätteitä voidaan esikäsitellä välivarastoinnin aikana puhdistuksen ja loppusijoituksen tehostamiseksi. Tutkimuksen kohteena oli sekä rannalta kerättävät kiinteät öljyiset ainekset että öljyinen merivesi. Työn alussa on perehdytty jätehuoltovastuuseen, eli kenen vastuulla öljyalusonnettomuuksissa syntyvät öljyiset jätteet ovat. Työssä on esitelty lyhyesti öljyvahinkojätteille teknisesti soveltuvien käsittelymenetelmien periaatteet ja menetelmien rajoituksia käsitellä öljyvahinkojätetteitä. Työssä on myös mainittu aiemmin Suomea koskettaneiden tai maailmalla tapahtuneiden alusöljyvahinkojen jätemääriä ja tapauksissa käytettyjä jätteiden käsittelymenetelmiä. Työ painottuu esittelemään Kymenlaakson alueen laitosten, Riihimäen Ekokem Oy Ab:n ja siirrettävien laitteistojen mahdollisuuksia käsitellä öljyisiä jätteitä. Lisäksi on esitelty öljyisen meriveden käsittelyyn soveltuvia laitoksia Kymenlaakson alueen näkökulmasta. Tietoja on kerätty puhelimitse ja sähköpostitse yritysten edustajilta vuoden 2007 aikana. Kymenlaakson alueella voidaan polttaa voimalaitosten leijupedeissä puhtaaseen polttoaineeseen sekoitettuja öljyisiä orgaanisia aineksia ja murskautuvia puhdistustyössä käytettyjä varusteita noin 10 000 t/a, homogenoitua öljyistä orgaanista ainesta voidaan polttaa Leca-soratehtaan rumpu-uunissa noin 1 200 t/a. Alueen polttokapasiteetti kasvaa, kun työn aikana rakenteilla oleva jätteenpolttolaitos valmistuu ja jätettä voidaan polttaa laitoksen arinalla. Haihtuvilla öljy-yhdisteillä pilaantuneita maa-aineksia voidaan alipainekäsitellä, jos yhdisteet eivät ole haihtuneet jo merellä. Erityisesti öljyiset maaainekset voidaan käsitellä alhaisilla öljypitoisuuksilla (öljypitoisuus noin alle 1-2 %) bitumistabiloimalla, aumakompostoimalla tai pesemällä siirrettävällä pesulaitteistolla. Kymenlaakson alueelle voidaan tuoda myös alueen ulkopuolelta siirrettäviä laitteistoja. Siirrettävät termodesorptiolaitteistot on tehty pilaantuneen maa-aineksen ensisijaiseen käsittelyyn, mutta samalla voidaan käsitellä myös muita jätejakeita, joilla on pieni partikkelikoko (alle 5-10 cm). Savaterra Oy:n siirrettävän termodesorptiolaitteiston kapasiteettiarvio on 100 000 t/a. Myös Niska & Nyyssönen Oy:llä on siirrettävä termodesorptiolaitteisto. Doranova Oy:n siirrettävän pesulaitteiston kapasiteettiarvio on 30 000- 50 000 t/a öljyistä maa-ainesta. Tutkimuksessa on ollut mukana myös Riihimäen Ekokem Oy Ab:n jätevoimala, jonka kapasiteettiarvio on 40 000-45 000 t/a erityisesti öljyisille orgaanisille aineksille, varusteille ja kuolleille eläimille. Riihimäen Ekokem Oy Ab:n ongelmajätelaitoksen rumpuuuneissa voidaan käsitellä arviolta 80 000-100 000 t/a öljyisiä maa-aineksia eli kiinteitä jätteitä, joiden partikkelikoko on suunnilleen alle 10 cm, ja 20 000 t/a nestemäisiä öljyisiä jätteitä. Työn loppupuolella on esitelty myös öljyisen meriveden käsittelyyn soveltuvia laitoksia ja niiden rajoituksia käsitellä kyseistä jätettä. Kyseisten laitosten kapasiteetit selviävät usein vasta onnettomuuden sattuessa. Kaikkiin annettuihin kapasiteettiarvioihin vaikuttaa merkittävästi jätteen koostumus. Raportin lopussa on esitelty alustava toimintasuunnitelma öljyvahinkojätteen käsittelemiseksi. Suunnitelmaan sisältyvät eri jätejakeille laaditut kaaviot, joista voi nähdä muun muassa eri jätekoostumuksille teknisesti soveltuvat käsittelymenetelmät ja käsittelymenetelmiä suorittavat yritykset. Öljyalusonnettomuuden sattuessa soveltuviin yrityksiin tulee ottaa yhteyttä ja selvittää kyseisellä hetkellä vapaana oleva käsittelykapasiteetti. Raportissa on myös esitelty käsittelykustannuksiin vaikuttavia tekijöitä ja arvioitu aiheutuvia kuljetuskustannuksia. Saadut tutkimustulokset ovat hyödynnettävissä erityisesti Kymenlaakson alueella. Tiedot käsittelymenetelmistä ja niiden rajoitteista ovat hyödynnettävissä valtakunnallisesti.

This study aimed to analyse the content and the composition of the essential oil of five accesses of mentrasto (Ageratum conyzoides). Five accesses of mentrasto with three repetitions were used. The accesses were obtained in Mariana-MG (AMA), Piranga-MG (API), Visconde do Rio Branco (ARB) and Viçosa-MG (AVB and AVP). The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and the identification of the oil components by CG and GC/MS. The ARB access presented the higher essential oil content, that is 0.70% (P < 0.05). Eleven chemical compounds were identified. The precocene I was the main constituent in the access API, and the precocene II was the main constituent in the accesses AMA, ARB, AVB and AVP.

Leaves of Lippia alba were submitted to six different drying treatments, using air at ambient temperature and heated up to 80 °C. The essential oil was extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by GC-MS. For the dried leaves, the oil content was reduced by 12 to 17% when compared with the fresh plant (0.66%). The major oil component was citral, representing 76% for the fresh plant, and varying from 82 to 84% for the dried material. These results showed that L. alba can be submitted to a drying process of up to 80 ºC without degradation and/or loss of the major, [LC1] active component.

Essential oils from leaves, ripe and unripe fruits of Schinus terebinthifolius growing in Brazil were investigated. Oil content from either ripe or unripe fruits was similar (4.65% and 3.98%, respectively). Sesquiterpenes (from 78.0% to 90.4%) dominated the oil content of both leaves and unripe fruit. The essential oils were tested in vitro for their allelopathic activity on germination and radicle growth of Lactuca sativa and Cucumis sativus at 1,000 and 10,000 µg mL-1concentrations. The three samples tested were more active in inhibiting the radicle growth for L. sativa (88.6-92.4%) than for C. sativus (50.5-84.5%) at 10,000 µg mL-1 concentration.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of five storage times of dry leaves of two patchouli genotypes on its essential oil content and chemical composition. Harvest was realized four months after planting. Storage influenced essential oil content of genotype POG-002. Patchoulol was the majority compound. Storage of dry leaves increased significatively the content of the compounds α-bulnesene and germacrene A of genotype POG-021 and longicanfenilone, pogostol and patchoulol of POG-002. However, storage reduced significatively the content of the compounds cicloseichelene, β-cariofilene, α-guaiene, acifilene and α-bulnesene of the essential oil of genotype POG-002.

Leaves and flower heads of P. brevipedunculata were submitted to four drying-air temperatures (room temperature, 40, 50 and 60 ºC). Room temperature (approximately 30 ºC) and higher temperature drying (50 and 60 ºC) had a deleterious effect on the essential oil content. The recommended drying-air temperature for the species is 40 ºC for it results in the same amount of essential oil observed in fresh cut plants. Overall, 13 components accounting for more than 92% of the total composition were identified. Citral was the major component, followed by α-pinene and limonene. The essential oil showed high toxicity against Artemia salina larvae.

To choose among the variety of oleaginous plants for biodiesel production, the oil content of several matrices was determined through different low-field ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments with varied pulse sequences, namely single-pulse, spin-echo, CPMG, and CWFP. The experiments that involved the first three sequences showed high correlation with each other and with the solvent extraction method. The quality of the vegetable oils was also evaluated on the basis of the existing correlation between the T2 values of the oils and their properties, such as viscosity, iodine index, and cetane index. These analyses were performed using HCA and PCA chemometric tools. The results were sufficiently significant to allow separation of the oleaginous matrices according to their quality. Thus, the low-field ¹H NMR technique was confirmed as an important tool to aid in the selection of oleaginous matrices for biodiesel production.

Croton zehntneri, a plant native to northeastern Brazil, is widely used in folk medicine to treat gastrointestinal problems and has rich essential oil content. The essential oil of C. Zehntneri was analyzed by GC-MS, and its inclusion complex with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was characterized by both vibrational spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Estragol was the major component identified in the essential oil by the study. IR spectra indicated an interaction of β-CD with essential oil from C. zehntneri, a finding corroborated by the stability constant and scanning calorimetry. Microencapsulation within β-CD has the potential to mask sensory attributes and increase aqueous solubility of oils, thereby improving their applicability as drugs.

ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to morphologically characterize fruits of the babassu palm tree (Attalea vitrivir) and to estimate their productivity in the north of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Twenty mature fruits were collected from 10 plants in three different areas in Januária, Minas Gerais. Eighteen biometric parameters of the fruits were measured, the oil contents of the seeds was determined, the adherence to normal distribution was evaluated, distribution frequencies were evaluated and the effects of individuals and areas on the variables and the correlations between them were analyzed. The production of fruit bunches per plant and the number of fruits per bunch from 10 plants were quantified in three areas and the potential production under both natural harvesting and cultivation conditions were estimated. Significant differences were found among all of the biometric parameters examined between the different individuals and the different areas, which shows wide morphological variability in the fruits. The average oil content was 45.7%, but with significant differences among individuals. The observed variability favors the selection of productive individuals in genetic improvement programs. The potential productivity of endocarps and oil based on a density of 400/plants per hectare would be respectively 6.4 and 1.2 tons/ha, which indicates the possibility of using A. vitrivir for producing charcoal, bio fuels, and for carbon fixation.

Despite its high nutritional value, soymilk consumption in Western countries is limited mainly due to undesirable flavors developed during the traditional elaboration process. Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) has pleasant flavor and recognized nutritional value. Thus, the aim of this work was to elaborate a soy and Brazil nut beverage exploring the use of two national products of high nutritional quality. The process for manufacturing a soy and Brazil nut beverage consisted of elaboration, formulation, and homogenization of soymilk and Brazil nut milk. The addition of five levels (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%) of Brazil nut milk to soy beverages was investigated. Although no significant differences in consumer average preference (p > 0.05) were observed among the beverages, analyzing both the consumer preference frequency distribution of the products and the Internal Preference Mapping (IPM), it was possible to conclude that the beverage with 30% of Brazil nut milk reached the most adequate performance demonstrating the sensory benefits Brazil nuts brought to the product. Regarding proximate composition, it did not present a better performance in terms of nutritional value, except for the oil content. The soy and Brazil nut beverage presented visual stability and no phase separation despite the non-stability shown by Brazil nut beverage itself. When Brazil nut milk was added to soy beverage, the final product became whiter than soy beverage, which is appealing to consumers who normally search for a clearer soymilk. The soy and Brazil nut beverage processing can be considered an alternative to increase the use of Brazil nuts in the Brazilian diet.

This research aimed to develop tortilla chips (TC) high in antioxidants from extruded and nixtamalized blue corn flours prepared with calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 and calcium lactate C6H10O6Ca. Tortilla chips were made with extruded flours [0.1% Ca(OH)2; 0.9% C6H10O6Ca; without calcium] and nixtamalized flours [1% Ca(OH)2; 2.95% C6H10O6Ca] using the frying process. Total anthocyanin, total phenolics content, antioxidant activity, color, texture, and oil content were determined. The color of tortilla chips from extruded flours (TCEF) showed high values of the parameters a* and b* indicating a reduction in the blue color. These color parameters were significantly different from those observed in tortilla chips from nixtamalized flours (TCNF), which tended to be more blue. The TCEF retained 15% anthocyanins, 34% phenolics, and 54% antioxidant activity. Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that anthocyanins and phenolics correlated significantly with antioxidant activity and color. TCEF with both calcium sources showed higher fracturability compared with that of TCNF. Oil absorption showed an opposite effect, with lower oil content in TCEF. Nixtamalization and extrusion with C6H10O6Ca resulted in flours and TC high in anthocyanins and antioxidant activity, representing an alternative production process for corn snack high in antioxidants.

The effects of boiling, frying, and roasting methods on nutrients and properties some of marine fishes were studies. AOAC official methods were used for the analyses of the samples. Frying reduced the protein content of Nemipterus japonicas, while roasting reduced the protein content of Carangoides malabaricus and Saurida undosquamis. Fresh and fried C. malabaricus had 71.2% and 57.05% protein content, respectively, while N. japonicas had 57.39% and 47.51%, respectively. The highest oil content in C.malabaricus was 16.80%, followed by N.japonicus 12.80%; while the lowest oil content in S.undosquamis was 5.88%. N.japonicusis protein content reduced with frying. Some cooking methods used in the processing can have an effect on of fish nutrient composition. The texture of fried and boiled fish fillets significantly differ from that of the roasted fillets (p<0.05).
