When starting a new business, most entrepreneurs usually focus on the external aspects in order to make their new business successful. Consequently, most research in entrepreneurship has been focused on the external factors to explain the high rate of entrepreneurial failures. But there is also a lack of consideration of the internal aspects by the new entrepreneurs. This paper focuses on these internal aspects and how to help a new business implementing an internal strategy.

This thesis introduce a new innovation methodology called IDEAS(R)EVOLUTION that was developed according to an on-going experimental research project started in 2007. This new approach to innovation has initial based on Design thinking for innovation theory and practice. The concept of design thinking for innovation has received much attention in recent years. This innovation approach has climbed from the design and designers knowledge field towards other knowledge areas, mainly business management and marketing. Human centered approach, radical collaboration, creativity and breakthrough thinking are the main founding principles of Design thinking that were adapted by those knowledge areas due to their assertively and fitness to the business context and market complexity evolution. Also Open innovation, User-centered innovation and later on Living Labs models emerge as answers to the market and consumers pressure and desire for new products, new services or new business models. Innovation became the principal business management focus and strategic orientation. All this changes had an impact also in the marketing theory. It is possible now to have better strategies, communications plans and continuous dialogue systems with the target audience, incorporating their insights and promoting them to the main dissemination ambassadors of our innovations in the market. Drawing upon data from five case studies, the empirical findings in this dissertation suggest that companies need to shift from Design thinking for innovation approach to an holistic, multidimensional and integrated innovation system. The innovation context it is complex, companies need deeper systems then the success formulas that “commercial “Design thinking for innovation “preaches”. They need to learn how to change their organization culture, how to empower their workforce and collaborators, how to incorporate external stakeholders in their innovation processes, hoe to measure and create key performance indicators throughout the innovation process to give them better decision making data, how to integrate meaning and purpose in their innovation philosophy. Finally they need to understand that the strategic innovation effort it is not a “one shot” story it is about creating a continuous flow of interaction and dialogue with their clients within a “value creation chain“ mindset; RESUMO: Metodologia de co-criação de um produto/marca cruzando Marketing, Design Thinking, Criativity and Management - IDEAS(R)EVOLUTION. Esta dissertação apresenta uma nova metodologia de inovação chamada IDEAS(R)EVOLUTION, que foi desenvolvida segundo um projecto de investigação experimental contínuo que teve o seu início em 2007. Esta nova abordagem baseou-se, inicialmente, na teoria e na práctica do Design thinking para a inovação. Actualmente o conceito do Design Thinking para a inovação “saiu” do dominio da area de conhecimento do Design e dos Designers, tendo despertado muito interesse noutras áreas como a Gestão e o Marketing. Uma abordagem centrada na Pessoa, a colaboração radical, a criatividade e o pensamento disruptivo são principios fundadores do movimento do Design thinking que têm sido adaptados por essas novas áreas de conhecimento devido assertividade e adaptabilidade ao contexto dos negócios e à evolução e complexidade do Mercado. Também os modelos de Inovação Aberta, a inovação centrada no utilizador e mais tarde os Living Labs, emergem como possiveis soluções para o Mercado e para a pressão e desejo dos consumidores para novos productos, serviços ou modelos de negócio. A inovação passou a ser o principal foco e orientação estratégica na Gestão. Todas estas mudanças também tiveram impacto na teoria do Marketing. Hoje é possivel criar melhores estratégias, planos de comunicação e sistemas continuos de diálogo com o público alvo, incorporando os seus insights e promovendo os consumidores como embaixadores na disseminação da inovação das empresas no Mercado Os resultados empiricos desta tese, construídos com a informação obtida nos cinco casos realizados, sugerem que as empresas precisam de se re-orientar do paradigma do Design thinking para a inovação, para um sistema de inovação mais holistico, multidimensional e integrado. O contexto da Inovação é complexo, por isso as empresas precisam de sistemas mais profundos e não apenas de “fórmulas comerciais” como o Design thinking para a inovação advoga. As Empresas precisam de aprender como mudar a sua cultura organizacional, como capacitar sua força de trabalho e colaboradores, como incorporar os públicos externos no processo de inovação, como medir o processo de inovação criando indicadores chave de performance e obter dados para um tomada de decisão mais informada, como integrar significado e propósito na sua filosofia de inovação. Por fim, precisam de perceber que uma estratégia de inovação não passa por ter “sucesso uma vez”, mas sim por criar um fluxo contínuo de interação e diálogo com os seus clientes com uma mentalidade de “cadeia de criação de valor”

A economia portuguesa regista nos últimos anos uma enorme “turbulência”, que foi em grande parte motivada pela constante transformação dos mercados, sobretudo dos financeiros. Torna-se então, fundamental que as empresas apostem na modernidade, na competitividade e na inovação. A atual crise económica faz “disparar” os níveis de desemprego e nesta perspetiva o empreendedorismo pode assumir um papel fundamental na compensação do mesmo. Este fenómeno pode ser visto como um elemento de desenvolvimento que contribui de uma forma positiva para o aumento da competitividade na economia, gerando riqueza e emprego. Por outro lado, pode também originar estabilidade social, uma vez, que se foca na política económica e industrial, abrangendo quer a criação de novos negócios quer o desenvolvimento de novas oportunidades de negócio em organizações já existentes. O espirito empresarial é também um grande impulsionador da inovação. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar as causas e as consequências do empreendedorismo no Concelho de Vila do Conde entre os anos de 2005 e 2011, para se identificarem os aspetos que assumem particular relevância. Quanto à metodologia usada para estudar as causas deste fenómeno, optamos pela elaboração de um inquérito a todos os empreendedores atrás referidos, quanto à metodologia utilizada para estudar as consequências, optamos pela elaboração de um estudo económico-financeiro comparativo entre empresas de criação recentes e empresas de criação mais antiga. Com a realização deste estudo, verificamos que, no que concerne às causas, o empreendedorismo não está associado a um mecanismo de refúgio para os desempregados e ainda que a auto-realização é a principal motivação para a criação dos novos negócios. No que concerne às consequências, observamos que as empresas mais recentes apresentam pior performance económico-financeira que as mais antigas.

This paper presents the creation and development of technological schools directly linked to the business community and to higher public education. Establishing themselves as the key interface between the two sectors they make a signigicant contribution by having a greater competitive edge when faced with increasing competition in the tradional markets. The development of new business strategies supported by references of excellence, quality and competitiveness also provides a good link between the estalishment of partnerships aiming at the qualification of education boards at a medium level between the technological school and higher education with a technological foundation. We present a case study as an example depicting the success of Escola Tecnológica de Vale de Cambra.

No panorama socioeconómico atual, a contenção de despesas e o corte no financiamento de serviços secundários consumidores de recursos conduzem à reformulação de processos e métodos das instituições públicas, que procuram manter a qualidade de vida dos seus cidadãos através de programas que se mostrem mais eficientes e económicos. O crescimento sustentado das tecnologias móveis, em conjunção com o aparecimento de novos paradigmas de interação pessoa-máquina com recurso a sensores e sistemas conscientes do contexto, criaram oportunidades de negócio na área do desenvolvimento de aplicações com vertente cívica para indivíduos e empresas, sensibilizando-os para a disponibilização de serviços orientados ao cidadão. Estas oportunidades de negócio incitaram a equipa do projeto a desenvolver uma plataforma de notificação de problemas urbanos baseada no seu sistema de informação geográfico para entidades municipais. O objetivo principal desta investigação foca a idealização, conceção e implementação de uma solução completa de notificação de problemas urbanos de caráter não urgente, distinta da concorrência pela facilidade com que os cidadãos são capazes de reportar situações que condicionam o seu dia-a-dia. Para alcançar esta distinção da restante oferta, foram realizados diversos estudos para determinar características inovadoras a implementar, assim como todas as funcionalidades base expectáveis neste tipo de sistemas. Esses estudos determinaram a implementação de técnicas de demarcação manual das zonas problemáticas e reconhecimento automático do tipo de problema reportado nas imagens, ambas desenvolvidas no âmbito deste projeto. Para a correta implementação dos módulos de demarcação e reconhecimento de imagem, foram feitos levantamentos do estado da arte destas áreas, fundamentando a escolha de métodos e tecnologias a integrar no projeto. Neste contexto, serão apresentadas em detalhe as várias fases que constituíram o processo de desenvolvimento da plataforma, desde a fase de estudo e comparação de ferramentas, metodologias, e técnicas para cada um dos conceitos abordados, passando pela proposta de um modelo de resolução, até à descrição pormenorizada dos algoritmos implementados. Por último, é realizada uma avaliação de desempenho ao par algoritmo/classificador desenvolvido, através da definição de métricas que estimam o sucesso ou insucesso do classificador de objetos. A avaliação é feita com base num conjunto de imagens de teste, recolhidas manualmente em plataformas públicas de notificação de problemas, confrontando os resultados obtidos pelo algoritmo com os resultados esperados.

Nowadays, the consumption of goods and services on the Internet are increasing in a constant motion. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) mostly from the traditional industry sectors are usually make business in weak and fragile market sectors, where customized products and services prevail. To survive and compete in the actual markets they have to readjust their business strategies by creating new manufacturing processes and establishing new business networks through new technological approaches. In order to compete with big enterprises, these partnerships aim the sharing of resources, knowledge and strategies to boost the sector’s business consolidation through the creation of dynamic manufacturing networks. To facilitate such demand, it is proposed the development of a centralized information system, which allows enterprises to select and create dynamic manufacturing networks that would have the capability to monitor all the manufacturing process, including the assembly, packaging and distribution phases. Even the networking partners that come from the same area have multi and heterogeneous representations of the same knowledge, denoting their own view of the domain. Thus, different conceptual, semantic, and consequently, diverse lexically knowledge representations may occur in the network, causing non-transparent sharing of information and interoperability inconsistencies. The creation of a framework supported by a tool that in a flexible way would enable the identification, classification and resolution of such semantic heterogeneities is required. This tool will support the network in the semantic mapping establishments, to facilitate the various enterprises information systems integration.

The objective of this paper is to analyze why firms in some industries locate in specialized economic environments (localization economies) while those in other industries prefer large city locations (urbanization economies). To this end, we examine the location decisions of new manufacturing firms in Spain at the city level and for narrowly defined industries (three-digit level). First, we estimate firm location models to obtain estimates that reflect the importance of localization and urbanization economies in each industry. In a second step, we regress these estimates on industry characteristics that are related to the potential importance of three agglomeration theories, namely, labor market pooling, input sharing and knowledge spillovers. Localization effects are low and urbanization effects are high in knowledge-intensive industries, suggesting that firms (partly) locate in large cities to reap the benefits of inter-industry knowledge spillovers. We also find that localization effects are high in industries that employ workers whose skills are more industry-specific, suggesting that industries (partly) locate in specialized economic environments to share a common pool of specialized workers.

This research studies from an internal view based on the Competency-Based Perspective (CBP), key organizational competencies developed for small new business. CBP is chosen in an attempt to explain the differences characterizing the closed companies from the consolidated ones. The main contribution of this paper is the definition of a set of key organizational competencies for new ventures from services and low technology based sectors. Using the classification proposed by [1] and a review of the entrepreneurship literature, the main competencies were defined and classified as: managerial, input-based, transformation-based, and output-based competencies. Using Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data for 41 countries this study investigates the impact of business exit on entrepreneurial activity at the country level. The paper distinguishes between two types of entrepreneurial activity according with the motive to start a new business: entrepreneurs driven by opportunity and necessity motives. The findings indicate that exits have a positive impact on future levels of entrepreneurial activity in a country. For each exit in a given year, a larger proportion of entrepreneurial activity the following year. Moreover, this e ffect turns out to be higher for opportunity entrepreneurs. The findings indicate that both types of entrepreneurial activity rates are influenced by the same factors and in the same direction. However, for some factors we find a di fferential impact on the entrepreneurship. The results show some important implications given that business exit may be overcome when there is a necessity motivation. This has important implications for both researchers and policy makers. Under the circumstances of the increasing market pressure, enterprises try to improve their competitive position by development efforts, and a business development project is one tool for that. There are not many answers to the question of how the development projects launched to improve the business performance in SMEs have succeeded. Theacademic interest in the business development project success has mainly focused on projects implemented in larger organisations rather than in SMEs. The previous studies on the business success of SMEs have mainly focused on new business ventures rather than on existing SMEs. However, nowadays a large number of business development projects are undertaken in existing SMEs, where they can pose a great challenge. This study focuses on business development success in SMEs thathave already established their business. The objective of the present study is to gain a deep understanding on business development project success in the SME-context and to identify the dimensions and factors affecting the project success. Further, the aim is to clarify how the business development projects implemented in SMEs have affected their performance. The empirical evidence is based on multiple case study. This study builds a framework for a generic theory of business development success in the SME-context, based on literature from the areas ofproject and change management, entrepreneurship and small business management, as well as performance measurement, and on empirical evidence from SMES. The framework consists of five success dimensions: entrepreneurial, project preparation, change management, project management and project success. The framework provides a systematic way for analysing the business development project and its impact on the performance and on the performing company. This case evidence indicates that successful business development projects have a balanced, high performance concerning all the dimensions. Good performance in one dimension is not enoughfor the project success, but it gives a good ground for the other dimensions. The other way round, poor performance in one success dimension affects the others, leading to poor performance of the project. In the SME-context the business development project success seems to be dependent on several interrelated dimensions and factors. Success in one area leads to success in other areas, and so creates an upward success spiral. Failure in one area seems to lead to failure in other areas, creating a downward failure spiral. The study indicates that the internal business development projects have affected the SMEs' performance widely also on areas and functions not initially targeted. The implications cover all thesuccess categories: the project efficiency, the impact on the customer, the business success and the future potentiality. With successful cases, the success tends to spread out to areas and functions not mentioned as the project goals, andwith unsuccessful cases the failure seems to spread out widely to the SMEs' other functions. This study also indicates that the most important key factors for successful business development project implementation are the strength of intention, business ability, knowledge, motivation and participation of the employees, as well as adequate and well-timed training provided to the employees.

Työn tavoitteena oli tarkentaa uuden tuotteen liiketoimintasuunnitelman laadintaprosessia. Yrityksen käyttämän liiketoimintasuunnitelman formaatin suhteen oli kehittämistarpeita ja liiketoimintasuunnitelman tiedonhallintaprosessi tuli kuvata. Työn teoriaosassa käsiteltiin tuotekehitysprosessia ja tuotteen liiketoimintasuunnitelmaa yleisesti. Käytännön osassa perehdyttiin yrityksen tuotekehitysprosessiin, kuvattiin tuotteen liiketoimintasuunnitelman laatimisprosessi uudistettujen ohjeiden mukaisesti sekä laadittiin uudelle tuotteelle liiketoimintasuunnitelma. Työn tuloksena liiketoimintasuunnitelman laatimista tarkennettiin sekä tunnistettiin tärkeimmät laatimisessa tarvittavat tietolähteet ja vastuut. Uudelle tuotteelle laaditun liiketoimintasuunnitelman avulla saatiin selvitettyä tuotteen hyödyt, kustannukset, myyntivolyymi sekä kannattavuus. Prosessin käyttöönotto on alkamassa.

Työn tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa ja tehdä esiselvitys Business Intelligencen(BI) mahdollisuuksista tiedon hallinnassa. Tavoitteena oli selvittää, kuinka yritys voi tietotekniikan avulla paremmin hyödyntää operatiivisten järjestelmien tuottamia tietoja päätöksenteon tukena. Työssä sovellettiin konstruktiivista tutkimusotetta. Business Intelligence -teknologiaan tutustuttiin aluksi kirjallisuuden avulla. Ongelmaa lähestyttiin selvittämällä kohdeyrityksen tiedonhallinnan nykytila ja siihen liittyvät ongelmat. Käyttäjävaatimukset selvitettiin strukturoidulla kyselytutkimuksella. Lisäksi työn empiriaosuudessa tutustuttiin kahteen Business Intelligence -toteutukseen ja arvioitiin teknologian kypsyyttä suhteessa asiakasvaatimuksiin. Tiedonhallinnalta toivottiin joustavuutta ja helppokäyttöisyyttä.Erityisesti tutkimuksessa esiin nousi se, että tiedon jakeluun tarvitaan monipuolisempia vaihtoehtoja. Käyttäjät olivat valmiita hyödyntämään uusia BI-ominaisuuksia varsin laajalti. Haastavinta tutkimuksessa oli liiketoiminnan ymmärtäminen. Suurimmat BI-teknologian puutteet havaittiin loppukäyttäjän sovelluksissa. Tietovarastointiprosessiin liittyvä teknologia todettiin toimivaksi.
