Fine particles of willemite, alpha -Zn2SiO4, were prepared by both solution combustion and sol-gel methods. Both processes yield single-phase, large-surface area (26- and 78-m(2)/g), sinteractive willemite powders. Thermal evolution of crystalline phases was studied using X-ray powder diffraction patterns. The combustion method favors low-temperature formation of willemite compared to the sol-gel method. The powders, when uniaxially pressed and sintered at 1300 degreesC, achieved 78-80% theoretical density. The microstructures of the sintered body show the presence of equiaxed 0.5- to 4-mum grains. Blue pigments of willemite doped with Co2+ and Ni2+ were also prepared by the combustion process.

Electrochemically deposited Cu-Ni black coatings on molybdenum substrate from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) bath solution are shown to exhibit good optical properties (alpha = 0.94, epsilon = 0.09). The deposit is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cu is present in metallic and +2 oxidation states in the as-prepared Cu-Ni black coating, whereas Ni2+ as well as Ni3+ species are observed in the same coating. Cu and Ni are observed in their metallic state after 10 and 20 min sputtering. X-ray initiated Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES) of Cu and Ni also agrees well with XPS investigations. Electrochemical deposition of Ni-Pd alloy films of various compositions from bath solution containing ethylenediamine (EDA) was carried out to use as anode material for methanol oxidative fuel cell in H2SO4 medium. Electronic absorption spectrum of bath solution containing Ni2+ Pd2+ ions and EDA indicated the formation of a four coordinate square planar metal-ligand complex of both the metal ions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the deposited alloy films show an increase in Pd-Ni alloy lattice parameter with increase in Pd content, and indicate the substitution of Pd in the lattice. A nano/ultrafine kind of crystal growth was observed in the alloy film deposited at low current density (2.5 mA cm(-2)). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) studies on the successively sputtered films showed the presence of Ni and Pd in pure metallic states and the surface concentration ratio of Ni to Pd is less than bulk indicating the segregation of Pd on the surface. Electro-catalytic oxidation of methanol in H2SO4 medium is found to be promoted on Ni-Pd electrodeposits. The anodic peak current characteristics to oxidation reaction on Ni-Pd was found typically high when compared to pure nickel and the relative increase in surface area by alloying the Ni by Pd was found to be as much as 300 times. The activity of NiAl2O4 in NiAl2O4MgAl2O4 solid solutions has been measured by using a solid oxide galvanic cell of the type, Pt, Ni + NiAl2O4 + Al2O3(α)/CaOZrO2/Ni + NixMg1−xAl2O4 + Al2O3(α). Pt, in the temperature range 750–1150°C. The activities in the spinel solid solutions show negative deviations from Raoult's law. The cation distribution in the solid solutions has been calculated using site preference energies independent of composition for Ni2+, Mg2+, and Al3+ ions obtained from crystal field theory and measured cation disorder in pure NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4, and assumi g ideal mixing of cations on the tetrahedral and octahedral positions. The calculated values correctly predict the decrease in the fraction, α, of Ni2+ ions on tetrahedral sites for 1>x>0.25, observed by Porta et al. [J. Solid State Chem.11, 135 (1974)] but do not support their tentative evidence for an increase in α for x < 0.25. The measured excess free energy of mixing can be completely accounted for by using either the calculated or the measured cation distributions. This suggests that the Madelung energy is approximately a linear function of composition in the solid solutions. The composition of NiOMgO solid solutions in equilibrium with NiAl2O4MgAl2O4 solid solutions has been calculated from the results and information available in literature.

Cd-1 - xNixSiO3 (x = 1-7 mol%) nanophosphors have been prepared for the first time by the combustion method using oxylyldihydrizide as a fuel. Powder X-ray diffraction results confirm the formation of monoclinic phase. Scanning electron micrographs show that Ni2+ influences the porosity of samples. The optical energy gap is widened with increase of Ni2+ ion dopant. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of Ni2+ ions in CdSiO3 exhibits a symmetric absorption at g = 2.343 and the site symmetry around Ni2+ ions is predominantly octahedral. The number of spins participating in resonance (N) and the paramagnetic susceptibility (chi) has been evaluated. The thermoluminescence intensity is found to increase up to similar to 20 min ultra-violet exposure and thereafter, decrease with further increase of ultra-violet dose. The kinetic parameters such as activation energy (E), frequency factor (s)and order of kinetics was estimated using glow peak shape method and the results are discussed. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Two new hydroxynaphthyl-hydrazone based fluorogenic chemosensors R-1 and R-2 have been synthesized by Schiff base condensation of Tris(4-formylphenyl)amine with 1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-hydrazide and 1-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carbohydrazone, respectively. They are examined as highly selective and sensitive receptors for Cu2+ ions in aqueous medium. Electronic absorption as well as fluorescence titration studies of receptors R-1 and R-2 with different metal cations in H2O/CH3CN medium showed highly selective and very rapid (< 2 min) binding affinity towards Cu2+ ions even in the presence of other commonly coexisting metal ions such as Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+. Quantification of the fluorescence titration analysis indicated that these newly synthesized receptors (R-1 and R-2) can indicate the presence of Cu2+ ions even at very low concentrations of 598 and 676 ppt, respectively. In addition, the propensity of these receptors as bio-imaging fluorescent probes to detect Cu2+ ions in human cervical HeLa cancer cell lines and their cytotoxicity against HeLa cells have been investigated.

A mixed-metal metal-organic framework (MOF) compound NiMn2{C6H3(COO)(3)}(2)], I, is prepared hydrothermally by replacing one of the octahedral Mn2+ ions in Mn-3{C6H3(COO)(3)}(2)] by Ni2+ ions. Magnetic studies on I suggest antiferromagnetic interactions with weak canted antiferromagnetism below 8 K. On heating in flowing air I transforms to NiMn2O4 spinel at low temperature (T < 400 degrees C). The thermal decomposition of I at different temperatures results in NiMn2O4 with particle sizes in the nano regime. The nanoparticle nature of NiMn2O4 was confirmed using PXRD and TEM studies. Magnetic studies on the nanoparticles of NiMn2O4 indicate ferrimagnetism. The transition temperature of NiMn2O4 nanoparticles exhibits a direct correlation with the particle size. This study highlights the usefulness of MOF compound as a single-source precursor for the preparation of important ceramic oxides with better control on the stoichiometry and particle size.

We present the selective sensing of multiple transition metal ions in water using a synthetic single probe. The probe is made up of pyrene and pyridine as signaling and interacting moiety, respectively. The sensor showed different responses toward metal ions just by varying the medium of detection. In organic solvent (acetonitrile), the probe showed selective detection of Hg2+ ion. In water, the fluorescence quenching was observed with three metal ions, Cu2+, Hg2+, and Ni2+. Further, just by varying the surface charge on the micellar aggregates, the probe could detect and discriminate the above-mentioned three different toxic metal ions appropriately. In neutral micelles (Brij 58), the probe showed a selective interaction with Hg2+ ion as observed in acetonitrile medium. However, in anionic micellar medium (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), the probe showed changes with both Cu2+ and Ni2+. under UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The discrimination between these two ions was achieved by recording their emission spectra, where it showed selective quenching with Cu2+.

Procedures were developed for purification and processing of electrodeposited enriched boron powder for control rod application in India's first commercial Proto Type Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR). Methodology for removal of anionic (F-, Cl-, BF4-) and cationic (Fe2+, Fe3+, Ni2+) impurities was developed. Parameters for grinding boron flakes obtained after electrodeposition were optimized to obtain the boron powder having particle size less than 100 gm. The rate of removal of impurities was studied with respect to time and concentration of the reagents used for purification. Process parameters for grinding and removal of impurities were optimized. A flowsheet was proposed which helps in minimizing the purification time and concentration of the reagent used for the effective removal of impurities. The purification methodology developed in this work could produce boron that meets the technical specifications for control rod application in a fast reactor.

We describe the synthesis and crystal structure of Li3MRuO5 (M = Co and Ni), new rock salt related oxides. Both the oxides crystallize in the layered LiCoO2 (alpha-NaFeO2) structure, as revealed by powder XRD data. Magnetic susceptibility data suggest that the oxidation states of transition metals are Li3Co3+(ls)Ru4+(ls) O-5 (ls = low spin) for the M = Co compound and Li3Ni2+Ru5+O5 for the M = Ni compound. Electrochemical investigations of lithium deintercalation-intercalation behaviour reveal that both Co and Ni phases exhibit attractive specific capacities of ca. 200 mA h g(-1) at an average voltage of 4 V that has been interpreted as due to the oxidation of Co3+ and Ru4+ in Li3CoRuO5 and Ni2+ to Ni4+ in the case of Li3NiRuO5. Thus, a different role of Ru ions is played in the isostructural oxides. Finally, in both cases evidence of irreversible behaviour above 4.2 V is observed and interpreted as formation of high valent ions or alternatively oxidation of oxide ions.

Two Schiff base metal complexes Cu-SPETNNO3 (1) and Ni-SPETNNO3 (2) SPETN=2,2-propane,1,3-diylbis(nitrilomethyldyne)pyridyl,phenolate] ] with hydrogen bonding groups have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In both of the compounds nitrates occupy a crystallographic general position. In 1 the lattice nitrates are on the 2(1) screw axis while in 2 they are at the crystallographic inversion center. C-HOnitrate synthons (formed by the nitrate anions and peripheral hydrogen bonding groups of the metal complexes) are non-covalent building blocks in molecular-assembly and packing of the cationic Schiff base metal complexes (M=Ni2+, Cu2+), resulting in 2-D hydrogen bonded networks. The CuCu non-bonding contact in 1 is 3.268 angstrom while the Ni-Ni bonding distance in 2 is 3.437 angstrom.

We report a detailed magnetic, dielectric and Raman studies on partially disordered and biphasic double perovskite La2NiMnO6. DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements show two magnetic anomalies at T-C1 similar to 270 K and T-C2 similar to 240 K, which may indicate the ferromagnetic ordering of the monoclinic and rhombohedral phases, respectively. A broad peak at a lower temperature (T-sg similar to 70 K) is also observed indicating a spin-glass transition due to partial anti-site disorder of Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions. Unlike the pure monoclinic phase, the biphasic compound exhibits a broad but a clear dielectric anomaly around 270 K which is a signature of magneto-dielectric effect. Temperature-dependent Raman studies between the temperature range 12-300 K in a wide spectral range from 220 cm(-1) to 1530 cm(-1) reveal a strong renormalization of the first as well as second-order Raman modes associated with the (Ni/Mn)O-6 octahedra near T-C1 implying a strong spin-phonon coupling. In addition, an anomaly is seen in the vicinity of spin-glass transition temperature in the temperature dependence of the frequency of the anti-symmetric stretching vibration of the octahedra. A new benzoyl hydrazone based chemosensor R is synthesized by Schiff base condensation of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol and phenyl carbohydrazide and acts as a highly selective fluorescence sensor for Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions in aqueous media. The reaction of R with CuCl2 or ZnCl2 forms the corresponding dimeric dicopper(II) Cu-2(R)(CH3O)-(NO3)](2)(CH3O)(2) (R-Cu2+) and dizinc(1) Zn-2(R)(2)](NO3)(2) (R-Zn2+) complexes, which are characterized, as R, by conventional techniques including single-crystal X-ray analysis. Electronic absorption and fluorescence titration studies of R with different metal cations in a CH3CN/0.02 M HEPES buffer medium (pH = 7.3) show a highly selective binding affinity only toward Cu(2+)and Zn2+ ions even in the presence of other commonly coexisting ions such as Ne+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, and Hg2+. Quantification of the fluorescence titration analysis shows that the chemosensor R can indicate the presence of Cu2+ and Zn2+ even at very low concentrations of 17.3 and 16.5 ppb, respectively. R-Zn2+ acts as a selective metal-based fluorescent sensor for inorganic pyrophosphate ion (PPi) even in the presence of other common anions such as F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, CH3COO-, CO32-, HCO3-, N-3(-), SO42-, PPi, AMP, ADP, and ATP in an aqueous medium. The propensity of R as a bioimaging fluorescent probe to detect Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions in human cervical HeLa cancer cell lines and their cytotoxicity against human cervical (HeLa), breast cancer (MCF7), and noncancer breast epithelial (MCF10a) cells have also been investigated. R-Cu2+ shows better cytotoxicity and sensitivity toward cancer cells over noncancer cells than R and R-Zn2+ under identical conditions, with the appearance of apoptotic bodies.

An electrochemical lead ion sensor has been developed by modification of carbon paste electrode (CPE) using polypyrrole functionalized with iminodiacetic acid (IDA-PPy) containing carboxyl group. The electrochemical response of Pb2+ ion on the IDA-PPy modified CPE has been evaluated and the controling parameters have been optimized using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The IDA-PPy modified CPE shows a linear correlation for Pb2+ concentrations in the range of 1 x 10(-6) to 5 x 10(-9) M and the lower detection limit of Pb2+ has been found to be 9.6 x 10(-9) M concentration. Other tested metal ions, namely Cu2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+, do not exhibit any voltammetric stripping response below 1 x 10(-7) M concentration. However, the Pb2+ response is affected in the presence of molar equivalents or higher concentrations of Cu2+, Cd2+ and Co2+ ions in binary systems with Pb2+, consequent to their ability to bind with iminodiacetic acid, while Hg2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+ do not interfere at all. A good correlation has been observed between the lead concentrations as analyzed by DPASV using IDA-PPy modified CPE and atomic absorption spectrophotometry for a lead containing industrial effluent sample. Towards fundamental studies and potential applications, achieving precise control over the generation of defects in pure ZnO nanocrystals has been always intriguing. Herein, we explored the rote of spectator ions (Co2+ and Ni2+) in influencing the functional properties of ZnO nanocrystals. The crystalline quality, phase purity, and composition of as-prepared samples were thoroughly established by powder X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy (TEM and STEM), and by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS). Despite the presence of Co2+ and Ni2+ ions in the reaction mixture, STEM-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), XPS analysis, and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) revealed that the ZnO nanocrystals formed are dopant-free. Even so, their luminescence and magnetic properties were substantially different from those of pure ZnO nanocrystals synthesized using a similar methodology. We attribute the origin of these properties to the defects associated with ZnO nanocrystals generated under different but optimized conditions.
