Evaluation of an internet-based physical activity intervention: A preliminary investigation

The Internet has the potential for delivering innovative, interactive physical activity (PA) interventions to large numbers of people. This study was designed to test the efficacy. of ant Internet intervention that consisted of a Web site plus 12 weekly e-mail tip sheets, compared with a waiting list control group. The Internet intervention was theory based and emphasized clear, graphical presentation of PA information. Sixty-five (30 intervention and 35 control) sedentary adult employees of several large hospitals (9 men and 56 women) were randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 study arms. Of the 65 participants, 57 completed the 1-month follow-up, and 52 completed the 3-month follow-up. The price of honour: The corporate governance of Banco Espirito Santo

The Price of Honour is a case study, supported with teaching notes, which describes the events and circumstances surrounding the implosion of one of Portugal’s most systemically important banks - Banco Espírito Santo (BES). The case focuses on BES’s corporate governance and how the Espírito Santo family’s tight control of the bank led to its exploitation. Although the situation caught the attention of the bank’s supervisors, their untimely actions could not prevent BES’s financial health from crumbling only two months after a rights issue. With little leeway, the supervisors put forward a resolution which dramatically ended the bank’s centennial legacy.

Observations on the pollination of Rhabdodendron macrophyllum (Spruce ex Benth.) Huber.

The species Rhabdodendron macrophyllum (Spr. ex Benth.) Hub. (Rhabdondendraceae) was observed in order to determine its pollination mechanism. Although it flowers around the year, there are flowering peaks when it is visited by several species of pollen-gathering bees. The principal floral visitors are two species of trigonid bees and one Melipona. The Melipona and one other visitor used the buzz method to extract pollen from the longitudinally dehiscent anthers. The trigonid bees collected pollen without buzzing. The flowers open around 6:00 a.m. and are available to the bess until about 10:30 a.m. Pollinator exclusion experiments showed that this species sets fruit equally by self fertilization.

Efficient Nash Equilibrium under Adverse Selection

This paper revisits the problem of adverse selection in the insurance market of Rothschild and Stiglitz [28]. We propose a simple extension of the game-theoretic structure in Hellwig [14] under which Nash-type strategic interaction between the informed customers and the uninformed firms results always in a particular separating equilibrium. The equilibrium allocation is unique and Pareto-efficient in the interim sense subject to incentive-compatibility and individual rationality. In fact, it is the unique neutral optimum in the sense of Myerson [22].

Analisi de compostos orgànics persistents i estudi de la procedència d'hidrocarburs en sediments del mar Mediterrani català

Els sediments del fons marí són molt importants en els ecosistemes aquàtics. Aquests sediments són considerats absorbents naturals, ja que s’hi acumulen moltes substàncies nocives, com ara metalls pesants i contaminants orgànics persistents (COPs). En aquest estudi s’han analitzat mostres de sediments del mar Mediterrani amb la finalitat d’examinar els COPs i la possible procedència d’hidrocarburs derivats del petroli. Les mostres han estat extretes davant de la desembocadura del riu Besòs (se n’ha fet una extracció a 8 km i una altra a 54 km de distància respecte la costa) i davant del municipi català anomenat Vilanova i la Geltrú (se n’ha fet, també, una extracció a 8-10 km i una altra a 30-40 km de distància respecte la costa). D’aquestes mostres, obtingudes per perforació, se n’han analitzat el primer i segon centímetres. S’han quantificat els hidrocarburs aromàtics policíclics (PAHs), els bifenils policlorats (PCBs) i els compostos organoclorats (OCPs) utilitzats antigament com a pesticides. S’ha posat de manifest que en les zones més properes a la costa, les concertacions COPs són més elevades a la regió més meridional, tot i estar davant de la desembocadura del riu Besòs. Segurament això és degut a la influència de la deriva litoral (corrent costaner marí en direcció NE-SW). Finalment, l’índex Phytane/Pristane, l’índex de preferència de carboni o, en anglès Carbon Preference Index (CPI) i la barreja complexa sense resoldre o, en anglès, Unresolved Complex Mixture (UCM) apunten a la conclusió que l’origen dels hidrocarburs analitzats (n-alcans) podria ser petrogènic.

El municipi de Barcelona i les parròquies del seu entorn al segle XIV

L'articulació política del pla de Barcelona en l'època medieval es va basar en l'existència de dos territoris: d'una banda, una gran àrea que va coincidir amb la plana entre les desembocadures del Llobregat i del Besòs, on les autoritats locals exerciren alguna funció de control judicial. D'altra banda, un territori molt més petit, anomenat Hort i Vinyet (Parròquia de Sants i Sarrià Sant Martí Provençals), on la jurisdicció civil i penal del Consell de Cent era absoluta. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és mostrar, en primer lloc, que el territori anomenat Hort i Vinyet no existia i, d'altra banda, que l'extens territori no era subjecte a la jurisdicció municipal

Tractament fisicoquímic de les aigües i fangs d'un escorxador porcí

L’objectiu del present projecte és la proposta (disseny i estimació econòmica) d’un sistema de tractament de les aigües i els fangs generats a un escorxador porcí de Granollers. Per tal de portar a terme aquest estudi, es va realitzar una anàlisi de la situació prèvia a l’escorxador, del diagrama de flux de les instal·lacions existents, de les necessitats del sector, dels límits d’abocament fixats pel Reglament del Consorci del Besòs, i finalment de la caracterització de les aigües residuals generades (en quantitat i qualitat) així com dels fangs produïts. Arran d’aquesta anàlisi es va realitzar un estudi experimental d’optimització del tractament fisicoquímic, i en base als resultats es van generar diferents alternatives de tractament, es va simular el seu comportament, i es va fer una avaluació comparativa dels costos i rendiments estimats

Una Serena mirada a la seguridad desde el barrio de La Mina. Huyendo del populismo rampante hacia algún lugar

La reflexión que plasmo en estas líneas parte de una concepción de la seguridad pública que serene los ánimos que en estos tiempos de dificultades, algunos, maliciosamente, intentan propagar con malas artes y oscuras intenciones. La seguridad pública, ilustrada en el caso del barrio de La Mina (Sant Adrià del Besós), no sólo es cosa sólo de la policía, ni materia reservada al Código Penal, a no ser que el populismo se imponga sobre la reflexión. Debemos huir de una visión reduccionista de los problemas sociales, porque éstos son siempre poliédricos, en sus orígenes y en las respuestas que debemos buscar para su mejora. La experiencia debe marcarnos un camino que desde la defensa de los intereses generales nos permita niveles óptimos de seguridad, combinando diferentes políticas públicas, en especial las de integración social y las urbanísticas, sin apartarnos jamás de la preocupación por la garantía de los derechos y libertades.

BK DNA viral load in plasma: evidence for an association with hemorrhagic cystitis in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant recipients.

We performed a case-control study to determine the association of BK plasma viremia with hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) in hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients. Thirty cases of HC (14 of which occurred after platelet engraftment with documented BK viruria [BK-HC]) were compared with matched controls. Weekly plasma samples were tested for BK virus DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). BK viremia detected before or during the disease was independently associated with HC (adjusted odds ratio = 30, P < .001); BK viremia was even important before clinical symptoms of HC occurred (odds ratio = 11, P < .001). Cases of HC and BK-HC had a significantly higher peak of BK plasma viral load than controls. BK virus was detected by in situ hybridization in bladder biopsies of 2 cases with severe HC and long-lasting BK viremia. BK virus seems to play a role in the development of HC and quantitative detection of BK DNA in plasma appears to be a marker of BK virus disease in HCT recipients.

Specific delineation of BK polyomavirus in kidney tissue with a digoxigenin-labeled DNA probe.

The detection of BK polyomavirus (BK virus, BKV) in kidney tissue is hampered by nonspecificity of antibodies suited to immunohistochemistry, and nonspecific background with in situ hybridization. The biotin-labeled DNA probe that is commercially available (Enzo Life Sciences, Inc.) shows good signal, but the intrinsic background in kidney tissue is high. We determined that the intrinsic background is due to endogenous biotin or biotin-binding activity in the renal tubular epithelium. Neither antibody blocking procedures nor an avidin/biotin block were entirely satisfactory for eliminating this background staining. We developed a digoxigenin-labeled DNA probe, and protocol, for detecting BK virus in formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded, kidney tissue obtained at autopsy. The hybridization signal is strong and there is no perceptible background staining. Eleven negative control kidneys all failed to hybridize. Conditions for low stringency hybridization may be employed, detecting both the related JC polyomavirus and BKV. Alternatively, high stringency hybridization conditions may be utilized, detecting BKV only. BK associated tubular necrosis is clearly demonstrated in two cases of BK nephritis.
