Sonhos e expectativas de jovens do ensino básico em contexto multicultural e económicamente desfavorecido

O intenso fluxo migratório na Europa nas últimas décadas, em função do desemprego e de carências sociais e económicas noutras regiões, que obrigou as populações a deslocarem-se para outros territórios em busca de melhores condições de vida, conduziu a novos questionamentos. Esta nova reconfiguração populacional originou novas gerações de imigrantes espalhados pela Europa. Portugal não fica atrás desta mudança, pelo contrário, pois é um dos países dentro da União Europeia (UE) que mais acolhe os imigrantes. Perante estas novas mudanças na Europa, nomeadamente em Portugal, como estas novas gerações de imigrantes veem esta nova realidade? Quais são os seus sonhos e objetivos? O que eles pensam acerca do futuro? O presente estudo tem por objetivo saber o que pensam os jovens imigrantes e economicamente desfavorecidos num mundo cada vez mais globalizado, pois acredita-se que a forma como vemos o mundo irá definir não somente o futuro de cada indivíduo mas também o futuro do país onde vivemos. A escola, como um dos principais meios para o desenvolvimento integral dos seus alunos, tem um papel definitivo na sua formação. Por isso, o presente trabalho realizou uma investigação empírica com alunos do 1º, 2º e 3º ciclos de origem portuguesa, africana, brasileira e ucraniana numa Escola em Lisboa, a fim de saber quais são os seus sonhos e expetativas em relação ao futuro. O trabalho divide-se em duas partes: a primeira compreende a apresentação de conceitos referentes à educação multicultural, contexto economicamente desfavorecido, jovem do ensino básico e economicamente desfavorecido, expetativas e autoestima em contexto escolar. Já na segunda parte, a investigação apresenta a metodologia, a qual tem uma abordagem qualitativa e exploratória. Neste capítulo houve dois procedimentos para a recolha de dados: o primeiro foi a aplicação de 35 questionários aos alunos e o segundo foi uma entrevista presencial com a Direção da Escola. Estas técnicas de recolha de informação permitiram-nos confrontar as expetativas dos jovens de origem imigrante e economicamente desfavorecida com as expetativas da Escola em relação a eles, apontando para uma clara dissonância face às ideias dos jovens e às da Instituição Educativa. Perante este cenário de divergências, o presente trabalho levanta questões para futuras investigações, entre elas: como a escola portuguesa trabalha a autoestima dos jovens imigrantes e economicamente desfavorecidos? Por que um professor tem a tendência de acreditar que um jovem de classe social desfavorecida não tem condições de chegar a um curso superior? Conflict in cross-functional teams

The present study is a qualitative analysis of the tensions that occur in cross-functional teams (CFTs) and the way in which they can affect the teams' accomplishments. The research is focused on a single case, COHTTEC 2005, a program aimed at transforming new technologies into businesses that took place in Lisbon, Portugal, starting March 2005. In this program, participants were organized in cross-functional teams that included researchers and management students. Semi-structured interviews were made to a sample of 17 participants. These interviews were recorded and transcribed. A table was then elaborated based on the primary data provided by the subjects and these data were classified in different categories. A three-stage model of group dynamics is proposed. The major findings of this project point to the role of interpersonal relationships on group outcomes. More specifically, several patterns associated with team malfunction were uncovered, the clearest ones being autocratic decision-making and arrogant behavior from some team members, as well as escalation in relationship conflict. Implications from these results are discussed, both for future research and for practice.

Assessing student individual performance within PBL teams: findings from the implementation of a new mechanism

This paper reports on the experience of the implementation of a new mechanism to assess individual student contribution within project work, where students work in teams to solve a large-scale open-ended interdisciplinary project. The study takes place at the University of Minho, with first year engineering students, enrolled in the Industrial Management and Engineering (Integrated Masters) degree. The aim of this paper is to describe the main principles and procedures underlying the assessment mechanism created and also provide some feedback from its first implementation, based on the students, lecturers and tutors perceptions. For data collection, a survey was sent to all course lecturers and tutors involved in the assessment process. Students also contributed with suggestions, both on a workshop held at the end of the project and also by answering a survey on the overall satisfaction with PBL experience. Findings show a positive level of acceptance of the new mechanism by the students and also by the lecturers and tutors. The study identified the need to clarify the criteria used by the lecturers and the exact role of the tutor, as well as the need for further improvement of its features and procedures. Some recommendations are also issued regarding technical aspects related to some of the steps of the procedures, as well as the need for greater support on the adjustment and final setting of the individual grades.

Estudi elaborat a partir d’una estada a la Harvard Law School, Estats Units, entre setembre i desembre del 2005. S’ha estudiat els punts més controvertits sobre la legalització de l’eutanàsia en el context occidental. S’ha pretès analitzar la principal doctrina i jurisprudència als Estats Units, tenint en compte els pros i els contres. En un futur s’estudiarà l’estat de la qüestió a Europa per desenvolupar una recerca comparada que podria enriquir les conclusions finals.

Teacher training in "multicultural" Sweden

This paper builds on the experience of the on-going, mainly ethnographic, research project called Teacher training in’ multicultural’ Sweden. Class, gender and ethnicity. In this multi-disciplinary project a number of scholars conduct research through participant observation in, and through the study and analysis of documents from, a number of teacher training colleges in Sweden. In this paper I will use empirical material gathered from two teacher training colleges to discuss this basic issue. One college is situated in a suburb outside Stockholm and it consciously portrays itself as a college for ‘multicultural’ students who will later teach in ‘multicultural’ suburbs. The other college is situated in a small town and although ‘multiculturalism’ is seen as important in the educational system students with mainly ‘Swedish’ background are recruited. In the first college ‘differences’ are lauded and students are encouraged to ponder upon and develop their ethnic profile. In the second ‘similarities’ are more taken for granted. I will argue, however, that within these colleges ‘differences’ and ’similarities’ are not only discussed but actually created against a backdrop of macro-constraints which are not much scrutinized within these colleges.
