Plastic cracking of cement mortar and concrete is primarily attributable to desiccation by evaporation from unprotected surfaces. This causes high suctions (negative pressures) to develop in the pore water adjacent to these surfaces. Dissolved salts in the pore water can also contribute significantly to suctions. Quantitative expressions are available for all of the components of the total suction. The development of suctions over time is illustrated by the results of desiccation tests conducted on cement mortars, supplemented by data from the literature. It is shown that ambient conditions conducive to plastic cracking can arise almost anywhere, but that the extremely high suctions that develop in mature cement mortar and concrete do not imply that compression failures should occur A high value of fracture energy is derived from data from the desiccation tests that implies that plastic cracking is characterized by a significant zone of plastic straining or microcracking.

Abstract: Cement-based materials are of enormous technological importance and their satisfactory performance depends on being able to transport and mould them in the freshly mixed state. This conference describes the rheology of mortars and related products in the context of practical situations, and deals with testing and measurement, together with the main features of their behaviour. It explores the links between rheology and technology.

Calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements/mortars are receiving increasing attention since their manufacture produces less CO2 than ordinary Portland cement (OPC) (up to 22% of decrease depending on its composition). These systems are complex and there are many parameters affecting their hydration mechanism, such as water-to-cement (w/c) ratio, type and amount of sulfate source, and so on. Low w/c ratios, within certain limits, may reduce the porosity and consequently, improve the mechanical strengths. However, it is accompanied by an increasing of viscosity and lack of both workability and homogeneity, with the consequent negative effect on the mechanical properties. The dispersion of the particles through the adsorption of the right amount and type of additives, such as superplasticizers, is a key point to improve the workability of mortars allowing both the preparation of homogeneous mixtures and the reduction of the amount of mixing water. This work deals with the preparation and optimization of homogeneous CSA-mortars with improved mechanical strengths. The optimum amount of superplasticizer was optimized through rheological measurements. The effect of different amounts of the superplasticizer on the viscosity of the mortars, its hydration mechanism and corresponding mechanical properties has been studied and will be discussed.

Through media such as newspapers, letterbox flyers, corporate brochures and television we are regularly confronted with descriptions for conventional (bricks 'n' mortar style) services. These representations vary in the terminology utilised, the depth of the description, the aspects of the service that are characterised and their applicability to candidate service requestors. Existing service catalogues (such as the Yellow Pages) provide little relief for service requestors from the burdensome task of discovering, comparing and substituting services. Add to this environment the rapidly evolving area of web services with its associated surfeit of standards, and the result is a considerably fragmented approach to the description of services. It leaves the reality of the Semantic Web somewhat clouded. --------- Let's consider service description briefly, before discussing our concerns with existing approaches to description. The act of describing is performed prior to advertising. This simple fact provides an interesting paradox as services cannot be described exactly before advertisement. This doesn't mean they can't be described comprehensively. By "exactly", we are referring to the fact that context provided by a service requestor (and their service needs) will alter the description of the service that is presented to the discoverer. For example, a service provider who operates a cinema wants to describe the price of their service. Let's say the advertised price is $15. They also want to state that a pensioner discount and a student discount is available which provides a 50% discount. A customer (i.e. service requestor) uses the cinema web site to purchase tickets online. They find the movie of their choice at a time that suits. However, its not until some context is provided by the requestor that the exact price is determined. The requestor might state that they are a pensioner. The same is applicable for a service requestor who purchases multiple tickets perhaps on behalf of other people. The disconnect between when the service is described and when a requestor provides context introduces challenges to the description process. A service provider would be ill-advised to offer independent descriptions that represent all the permutations possible for a single service. The descriptive effort would be prohibitive.

Since the advent of the internet, much speculation has ensued regarding its tangible benefits to business. This article looks at the effectiveness of email advertising to promote information to consumers. Within this email promotion context, and using data from a survey of 838 female Finnish consumers of a major international cosmetics brand, we investigate consumer perceptions of email advertising. Specifically, within an exploratory research context we address two research questions: (1) What email advertising factors may influence visits to the company website? and (2) What email advertising factors may influence visits to a physical (i.e., bricks-and-mortar) company sales outlet? Results suggest that email advertisers should strive to generate emails that are perceived as useful. Useful emails appear to influence consumers to visit the store primarily to either buy the product or view the product firsthand, rather than visit the company website. However, as consumers could not buy the advertised products from the website, these findings should be regarded as preliminary. Factors influencing perceptions of email advertising usefulness are explored along with limitations and future research directions.

This study investigates e-mail marketing using data from a survey of 839 Finnish customers of an international cosmetics brand. E-mail marketing involves the use of e-mail to send promotions and information to customers. In this context we address two research questions: (1) What e-mail advertising factors drive visits to a physical (i.e., bricks-and-mortar) company sales outlet? and, (2) Does e-mail advertising influence brand satisfaction? Our findings indicate that useful e-mails can influence customers to visit the store. Further, brand satisfaction is positively influenced if e-mails are interesting and also by the amount of e-mail received by customers.

Masonry is one of the most ancient construction materials in the World. When compared to other civil engineering practices, masonry construction is highly labour intensive, which can affect the quality and productivity adversely. With a view to improving quality and in light of the limited skilled labour in the recent times several innovative masonry construction methods such as the dry stack and the thin bed masonry have been developed. This paper focuses on the thin bed masonry system, which is used in many parts of Europe. Thin bed masonry system utilises thin layer of polymer modified mortars connecting the accurately dimensioned and/or interlockable units. This assembly process has the potential for automated panelised construction system in the industry setting or being adopted in the site using less skilled labour, without sacrificing the quality. This is because unlike the conventional masonry construction, the thin bed technology uses thinner mortar (or glue) layer which can be controlled easily through some novel methods described in this paper. Structurally, reduction in the thickness of the mortar joint has beneficial effects; for example it increases the compressive strength of masonry; in addition polymer added glue mortar enhances lateral load capacity relative to conventional masonry. This paper reviews the details of the recent research outcomes on the structural characteristics and construction practices of thin bed masonry. Finally the suitability of thin bed masonry in developing countries where masonry remains as the most common material for residential building construction is discussed.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flexural bond strength of thin bed concrete masonry. Flexural bond strength of masonry depends upon the mortar type, the techniques of dispersion of mortar and the surface texture (roughness) of concrete blocks. There exists an abundance of literature on the conventional masonry bond containing 10mm thick mortar; however, the 2mm polymer flue mortar bond is not yet well researched. This paper reports a study on the examination of the effect of mortar compositions, dispersion methods and unit surface textures to the flexural bond strength of thin bed concrete masonry. Three types of polymer modified glue mortars, three surface textures and four techniques of mortar dispersion have been used in preparing 108 four point flexural test specimens. All mortar joints have been carefully prepared to ensure achievement of 2mm layer polymer mortar thickness on average. The results exhibit the flexural bond strength of thin bed concrete masonry much is higher than that of the conventional masonry; moreover the unit surface texture and the mortar dispersion methods are found to have significant influence on the flexural bond strength.

The effectiveness of a repair work for the restoration of spalled reinforced concrete (r.c.) structures depends to a great extent, on their ability to restore the structural integrity of the r.c. element, to restore its serviceability and to protect the reinforcements from further deterioration. This paper presents results of a study concocted to investigate the structural performance of eight spalled r.c. beams repaired using two advanced repair materials in various zones for comparison purposes, namely a free flowing self compacting mortar (FFSCM) and a polymer Modified cementitious mortar (PMCM). The repair technique adopted was that for the repair of spalled concrete in which the bond between the concrete and steel was completely lost due to reinforcement corrosion or the effect of fire or impact. The beams used for the experiment were first cast, then hacked at various zones before they were repaired except for the control beam. The beam specimens were then loaded to failure under four point loadings. The structural response of each beam was evaluated in terms of first crack load, cracking behavior, crack pattern, deflection, variation of strains in the concrete and steel, collapse load and the modes of failure. The results of the test showed that, the repair materials applied on the various zones of the beams were able to restore more than 100% of the beams’ capacity and that FFSCM gave a better overall performance.

Population increase and economic developments can lead to construction as well as demolition of infrastructures such as buildings, bridges, roads, etc and used concrete is the main waste product of them. Recycling of waste concrete to obtain the recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) for base and/or sub-base materials in road construction is a foremost application to be promoted to gain economical and sustainable benefits. As the mortar, bricks, glass and asphalt present in different constituents in RCA, it exhibits inconsistent properties and performance. In this study, six different types of RCA samples were subjected classification tests such as particle size distribution, plasticity, compaction test and California Bearing Ratio (CBR). Results were compared with those of the standard road materials used in Queensland, Australia and found that ‘RM1-100/RM3-0’ and ‘RM1-80/RM3-20’ samples are sitting in the margin of the minimum required specifications of base materials while others are lower than that.

Background: Changes in the roles of the contemporary pharmacist has seen a decline in the number and variety of extemporaneously compounded dosage forms. Pharmacy curricula reflect this change with a reduction in the emphasis on extemporaneous compounding practice. Aim: To elicit information about extemporaneously compounded dosage forms and perceptions of compounding practice from pharmacists and pharmacy students. Method: Self-administered surveys were mailed to 1063 pharmacists and offered online to 896 pharmacy undergraduates across the 4 years of a Bachelor of Pharmacy program in Queensland. Results: 382 (36%) pharmacists and 455 (51%) students completed the survey. Most pharmacists (96%) reported compounding a product in the 12 months prior to the survey, particularly semi-solids (89%) and liquids (64%) for external use. Most pharmacies (> 96%) owned basic compounding equipment, such as a slab and spatula, mortar and pestle, and cylindrical/conical measures. Half of the pharmacies used mechanical rather than electronic balances. Students expressed greater confidence in their ability to use basic compounding equipment and to perform basic compounding tasks as they progressed through the 4-year degree course. Pharmacists’ views on students’ ability to compound basic products at the end of their degree were generally similar to the proportion of final-year students who reported they could confidently complete the task. Conclusion: Despite a decline in extemporaneously compounded products in community pharmacy, pharmacy graduates need to be competent in compounding techniques.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the flexural and shear bond characteristics of thin layer polymer cement mortared concrete masonry. It is well known that the bond characteristics of masonry depend upon the mortar type, the techniques of dispersion of mortar and the surface texture of concrete blocks; there exists an abundance of literature on the conventional 10 mm thick cement mortared masonry bond; however, 1-4 mm thick polymer cement mortared masonry bond is not yet well researched. This paper reports a study on the examination of the effect of mortar compositions, dispersion methods and unit surface textures to the flexural and shear bond characteristics of thin layer mortared concrete masonry. A non-contact digital image correlation method was adopted for the measurement of strains at the unit-mortar interface in this research. All mortar joints have been carefully prepared to ensure achievement of the desired thin layer mortar thickness on average. The results exhibit that the bond strength of thin mortar layered concrete masonry with polymer cement mortar is higher than that of the conventional masonry; moreover the unit surface texture and the mortar dispersion methods are found to have significant influence on the flexural and shear bond characteristics. From the experimental results, a correlation between the flexural and the shear bond strengths has been determined and is presented in this paper.
