The Sm, Eu, and Yb tri- and dichlorides were investigated by Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry. It was found out by the analysis of mass spectra and ionization efficiency curves that the vapor composition is complex due to the partial high temperature decomposition/disproportionation of the samples. Up to five vapor species were identified for both LnCl3 (LnCl3, LnCl2, Ln2Cl4, Ln2Cl5, and Ln2Cl6) and LnCl2 (LnCl3, LnCl2, LnCl, Ln, and Ln2Cl4). The quantitative evaluation of vapor composition was made. It indicates that the disproportionation of SmCl2 and EuCl2 is negligible in the temperature range studied whereas that of YbCl2 and the decomposition of SmCl3 and YbCl3 cannot be neglected.

cis-Diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (cisplatin) is a widely used anticancer drug that binds to and crosslinks DNA. The major DNA adduct of the drug results from coordination of two adjacent guanine bases to platinum to form the intrastrand crosslink cis-[Pt(NH3)2[d(GpG)-N7(1), -N7(2)]] (cis-Pt-GG). In the present study, spectroscopic and calorimetric techniques were employed to characterize the influence of this crosslink on the conformation, thermal stability, and energetics of a site-specifically platinated 20-mer DNA duplex. CD spectroscopic and thermal denaturation data revealed that the crosslink alters the structure of the host duplex, consistent with a shift from a B-like to an A-like conformation; lowers its thermal stability by approximately 9 degrees C; and reduces its thermodynamic stability by 6.3 kcal/mol at 25 degrees C, most of which is enthalpic in origin; but it does not alter the two-state melting behavior exhibited by the parent, unmodified duplex, despite the significant crosslink-induced changes noted above. The energetic consequences of the cis-Pt-GG crosslink are discussed in relation to the structural perturbations it induces in DNA and to how these crosslink-induced perturbations might modulate protein binding.

Poly(lactic acid) PLA, and poly(hydroxybutyrate) PHB, blends were processed as films and characterized for their use in food packaging. PLA was blended with PHB to enhance the crystallinity. Therefore, PHB addition strongly increased oxygen barrier while decreased the wettability. Two different environmentally-friendly plasticizers, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and acetyl(tributyl citrate) (ATBC), were added to these blends to increase their processing performance, while improving their ductile properties. ATBC showed higher plasticizer efficiency than PEG directly related to the similarity solubility parameters between ATBC and both biopolymers. Moreover, ATBC was more efficiently retained to the polymer matrix during processing than PEG. PLA–PHB–ATBC blends were homogeneous and transparent blends that showed promising performance for the preparation of films by a ready industrial process technology for food packaging applications, showing slightly amber color, improved elongation at break, enhanced oxygen barrier and decreased wettability.

The structures of multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett films of barium arachidate before and after heat treatment have been investigated using both atomic force microscopy (AFM) and grazing incidence synchrotron X-ray diffraction (GIXD). AFM gave information on surface morphology at molecular resolution while GIXD provided quantitative details of the lattice structures of the films with their crystal symmetries and lattice constants. As-prepared films contained three coexisting structures: two triclinic structures with the molecularchains tilted by about 20degrees from the film normal and with 3 x 1 or 2 x 2 super-lattice features arising from height modulation of the molecules in the films; a rectangular structure with molecules perpendicular to the film surface. Of these, the 3 x 1 structure is dominant with a loose correlation between the bilayers. In the film plane both superstructures are commensurate with the local structures, having different oblique symmetries. The lattice constants for the 3 x 1 structure are a(s) = 3a = 13.86 Angstrom, b(s) = b = 4.31 Angstrom and gamma(s) = gamma = 82.7degrees; for the 2 x 2 structure a(s) = 2a = 16.54 Angstrom, b(s) = 2b = 9.67 Angstrom, gamma(s) = gamma = 88degrees. For the rectangular structure the lattice constants are a = 7.39 Angstrom, b = 4.96 Angstrom and gamma = 90degrees. After annealing, the 2 x 2 and rectangular structures were not observed, while the 3 x 1 structure had developed over the entire film. For the annealed films the correlation length in the film plane is about twice that in the unheated films, and in the out-of-plane direction covers two bilayers. The above lattice parameters, determined by GIXD, differed significantly from the values obtained by AFM, due possibly to distortion of the films by the scanning action of the AFM tip. Zinc oxide single crystals implanted at room temperature with high-dose (1.4x10(17) cm(-2)) 300 keV As+ ions are annealed at 1000-1200 degrees C. Damage recovery is studied by a combination of Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry (RBS/C), cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM), and atomic force microscopy. Results show that such a thermal treatment leads to the decomposition and evaporation of the heavily damaged layer instead of apparent defect recovery and recrystallization that could be inferred from RBS/C and XTEM data alone. This study shows that heavily damaged ZnO has relatively poor thermal stability compared to as-grown ZnO which is a significant result and has implications for understanding results on thermal annealing of ion-implanted ZnO. An analysis of thermal degradation products evolved during the melt processing of organo-layered silicates (OLS) was carried out via the use of a solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique. Two commerical OLSs and one produced in-house were prepared for comparision. The solid phase microextraction technique proved to be a very effective technique for investigating the degradation of the OLS at a specific processing temperature. The results showed that most available OLSs will degrade under typical conditions required for the melt processing of many polymers, including thermoplastic polyurethanes. It is suggested that these degradation products may lead to changes in the structure and properties of the final polymer, particularly in thermoplastic polyurethanes, which seem significantly succeptable to the presence of these products. It is also suggested that many commercially available OLSs are produced in such a way that results in an excess of unbound organic modifier, giving rise to a greater quantity of degradation products. All OLSs where compared and characterised by TGA and GC-MS. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have explored the thermal stability of nanoscale growth twins in sputter-deposited 330 stainless-steel (SS) films by vacuum annealing up to 500 °C. In spite of an average twin spacing of only 4 nm in the as-deposited films, no detectable variation in the twin spacing or orientation of twin interfaces was observed after annealing. An increase in the average columnar grain size was observed after annealing. The hardness of 330 SS films increases after annealing, from 7 GPa for as-deposited films to around 8 GPa for annealed films, while the electrical resistivity decreases slightly after annealing. The changes in mechanical and electrical properties after annealing are interpreted in terms of the corresponding changes in the residual stress and microstructure of the films. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

In this paper, we investigated the effect of hydrogen termination on the electrical properties and impedance spectra of detonation nanodiamond. The impedance spectra revealed that the hydrogen-termination process increases the electrical conductivity by four orders of magnitude at room temperature. An equivalent circuit has been proposed to correlate with the conduction mechanism. Arrhenius plot showed that there were two different activation energy levels located at 0.089 eV and 0.63 eV between 50 °C and 400 °C. The possible physical mechanism corresponding to these activation energy levels has been discussed. Hydrogen-terminated detonation nanodiamond has been further annealed at different temperatures prior to FTIR and XPS measurements in order to understand their thermal stability. The results demonstrated that the surface oxidization occurred between 100 °C and 150 °C. However, the C-H bonds could partially survive when the temperature reaches 400 °C in air. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

The stability of the oil phase obtained from intermediate pyrolysis process was used for this investigation. The analysis was based on standard methods of determining kinematic viscosity, gas - chromatography / mass - spectrometry for compositional changes, FT-IR for functional group, Karl Fischer titration for water content and bomb calorimeter for higher heaating values. The methods were used to determine changes that occurred during ageing. The temperatures used for thermal testing were 60 °C and 80 °C for the periods of 72 and 168 h. Methanol and biodiesel were used as solvents for the analysis. The bio-oil samples contained 10 % methanol, 10 % Biodiesel, 20 % Biodiesel and unstabilised pyrolysis oil. The tests carried out at 80 °C showed drastic changes compared to those at 60 °C. The bio-oil samples containing 20 % biodiesel proved to be more stable than those with 10 % methanol. The unstabilised pyrolysis oil showed the greatest changes in viscosity, composition change and highest increase in water content. The measurement of kinematic viscosity and gas chromatograph mass spectrometry were found to be more reliable for predicting the ageing process.

The thermal stability of porous sol-gel phosphosilicates was studied by comparing the textural features upon calcination between 400 and 550 °C. A significant loss of surface area and pore volume were observed; the first is due to thermal coarsening of the nanoparticles, and the pore volume reduction was ascribed to sintering of the most external nanoparticles producing less void volume. Lanthanum addition was investigated as thermal stabilizer. For the mesoporous phosphosilicate composition, lanthanum addition enhanced the surface area, showing a 45% and 50% improvement with respect to the La-free counterpart; the effect was much less visible for the macroporous composition.

Thermal stability of AlGaN/GaN MOS-HEMTs and -diodes using Gd_(2)O_(3) are investigated by means of different thermal cycles and storage tests up to 500ºC for one week. IV DC and pulsed characteristics of the devices before and after the processes are evaluated and compared with conventional HEMTs. Results show that the devices with Gd_(2)O_(3) dielectric layer have lower leakage current and a more stable behavior during thermal treatment processes compared with conventional devices. In fact, an excellent on/off ratio of about 108 and a stable V_(t) is observed after storage at high temperature. The beneficial effects of Gd_(2)O_(3) on trapping effects of MOS-HEMTs are also dis-cussed.

Polyhydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate microspheres (PHBV-MS) were prepared as a delivery system for the herbicide atrazine (ATZ). Characterization of the system included investigation of in vitro release properties and genotoxicity. ATZ - PHBV-MS particle diameters showed a size distribution range of 1-13 mu m. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses indicated that ATZ was associated with the PHBV microparticles. The release profiles showed a different release behavior for the pure herbicide in solution, as compared with that containing ATZ-loaded PHBV-MS. Korsmeyer-Peppas model analyses showed that atrazine release from the microparticles occurred by a combination of diffusion through the matrix and partial diffusion through water-filled pores of the PHBV microparticles. A Lactuca sativa test result showed that the genotoxicity of ATZ-loaded PHBV-MP was decreased in relation to ATZ alone. The results demonstrate a viable biodegradable herbicide release system using atrazine for agrochemical purposes.
