Separation of Ce(IV) and RE(III) was investigated by hollow fiber membrane-based extraction with contercurrent recirculating operation. The mass transfer coefficients of Ce(IV) and RE(III) and the effective factors to them were tested. The results show the mass transfer coefficient of Ce(IV) is larger than that of RE(III), and their mass transfer mechanism is different. The mass transfer of Ce(IV) was controlled by the resistance in water critical layer due to its more rapid interfacial reaction rate and larger distribution coefficient, which was different from RE(III) mass transfer with a slow interfacial reaction rate and small distribution coefficient. Ce(IV) was separated from the mixed solution of Ce(IV) and RE(III) by means of the difference of their mass transfer rates.

Zirconium-doped perovskite-type membrane materials of BaCo0.4Fe0.6-xZrxO3-delta (x = 0-0.4) with mixed oxygen ion and electron conductivity were synthesized through a method of combining citric and EDTA acid complexes. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O-2-TPD) and hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) showed that the incorporation of proper amount of zirconium into BaCo0.4Fe0.6O3-delta could stabilize the ideal and cubic structure of perovskite. Studies on the oxygen permeability of the as-synthesized membrane disks under air/He gradient indicated that the content of zirconium in these materials had great effects on oxygen permeation flux, activation energy for oxygen permeation and operation stability. The high oxygen permeation flux of 0.90 ml cm(-2) min(-1) at 950degreesC, the single activation energy for oxygen permeation in the range of 600-950 degreesC and the long-term operation stability at a relatively lower operational temperature of 800 degreesC under air/He gradient were achieved for the BaCo0.4Fe0.4Zr0.2O3-delta material. Meanwhile, the effect of carbon dioxide on structural stability and oxygen permeability of this material was also studied in detail, which revealed that the reversible stability could be attained for it. A novel poly sulfone/polyethylene oxide/silicone rubber (PSOPEO/SR) multilayer composite membrane was fabricated by double coating polysulfone substrate membrane with polyethylene oxide and silicone rubber. Gas permeation experiments were performed at 30 degrees C for hydrogen and nitrogen. PSf(PEO/SR membrane displayed high and steady performance for H-2/N-2: permeances of H-2 and N-2 of 49.51 and 0.601 GPU, respectively, and H-2/N-2 ideal separation factor of 82.3. It was explained that layer interfaces due to the introduction of PEO layer act as the permselective media and are responsible for the higher H-2/N-2 ideal separation factor which has exceeded the intrinsic permselectivities of the three polymers used in this study. Immobilized liposome chromatography (ILC), the stationary phase of which has been regarded as a mimic biomembranes system was used to separate and analyze compounds interacting with liposome membrane in Danggui Buxue decoction, a combined prescription of traditional Chinese medicines (CPTCMs), and its compositions Radix Astragli and Radix Angelica Sinensis. More than 10 main peaks in the extract of Danggui Buxue decoction were resolved on the ILC column, suggesting that more than 10 components in the prescription have significant retention on ILC column. Ligustilide, astragaloside, TV and formononetin, three main bioactive ingredients in Danggui Buxue decoction, were found to have relatively significant, while ferulic acid, another bioactive ingredient in the prescription, relatively weak retention on ILC column. Effects of the eluent pH and amount of immobilized phosphatidylcholine (PC) on separation of interactional compounds in the extract of Danggui Buxue decoction were also investigated. It was found that these two factors strongly affected the retention of some interactional compounds. In addition, the fractions partitioned with different solvents from water extract of this combined prescription were evaluated with this ILC column system. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dense ceramics with mixed protonic-electronic conductivity are of considerable interest for the separation and purification of hydrogen and as electrochemical reactors. In this work, the hydrogen permeability of a Sr0.97Ce0.9Yb0.1O3 - δ (SCYb) membrane with a porous Pt catalytic layer on the hydrogen feed-exposed side has been studied over the temperature range 500-804 °C employing Ar as the permeate sweep gas. A SiO2-B2O3-BaO-MgO-ZnO-based glass-ceramic sealant was successfully employed to seal the membrane to the dual-chamber reactor. After 14 h of exposure to 10% H2:90% N2 at 804 °C, the H2 flux reached a maximum of 33 nmol cm- 2 s- 1, over an order of magnitude higher than that obtained on membranes of similar thickness without surface modification. The permeation rate then decreased slowly and moderately on annealing at 804 °C over a further 130 h. Thereafter, the flux was both reproducible and stable on thermal cycling in the range 600-804 °C. The results indicate an important role of superficial activation processes in the flux rate and suggest that hydrogen fluxes can be further optimised in cerate-based perovskites. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. To quantitatively investigate the trafficking of the transmembrane lectin VIP36 and its relation to cargo-containing transport carriers (TCs), we analyzed a C-terminal fluorescent-protein (FP) fusion, VIP36-SP-FP. When expressed at moderate levels, VIP36-SP-FP localized to the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and intermediate transport structures, and colocalized with epitope-tagged VIP36. Temperature shift and pharmacological experiments indicated VIP36-SP-FP recycled in the early secretory pathway, exhibiting trafficking representative of a class of transmembrane cargo receptors, including the closely related lectin ERGIC53. VIP36-SP-FP trafficking structures comprised tubules and globular elements, which translocated in a saltatory manner. Simultaneous visualization of anterograde secretory cargo and VIP36-SP-FP indicated that the globular structures were pre-Golgi carriers, and that VIP36-SP-FP segregated from cargo within the Golgi and was not included in post-Golgi TCs. Organelle-specific bleach experiments directly measured the exchange of VIP36-SP-FP between the Golgi and endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Fitting a two-compartment model to the recovery data predicted first order rate constants of 1.22 ± 0.44%/min for ER → Golgi, and 7.68 ± 1.94%/min for Golgi → ER transport, revealing a half-time of 113 ± 70 min for leaving the ER and 1.67 ± 0.45 min for leaving the Golgi, and accounting for the measured steady-state distribution of VIP36-SP-FP (13% Golgi/87% ER). Perturbing transport with AlF4− treatment altered VIP36-SP-GFP distribution and changed the rate constants. The parameters of the model suggest that relatively small differences in the first order rate constants, perhaps manifested in subtle differences in the tendency to enter distinct TCs, result in large differences in the steady-state localization of secretory components.

In this work, a working model is proposed of molecular sieve silica (MSS) multistage membrane systems for CO cleanup at high temperatures (up to 500 degrees C) in a simulated fuel cell fuel processing system. Gases are described as having little interactions with each other relative to the pore walls due to low isosteric heat of adsorption on silica surfaces and high temperatures. The Arrhenius function for activated transport of pure gases was used to predict mixture concentration in the permeate and retentate streams. Simulation predicted CO could be reduced to levels below the required 50 ppmv for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell anodes at a stage H-2/CO selectivity of higher than 40 in 4 series membrane units. Experimental validation showed predicting mixture concentrations required only pure gas permeation data. This model has significant application for setting industrial stretch targets and as a robust basis for complex membrane model configurations. (c) 2006 American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

In conventional fabrication of ceramic separation membranes, the particulate sols are applied onto porous supports. Major structural deficiencies under this approach are pin-holes and cracks, and the dramatic losses of flux when pore sizes are reduced to enhance selectivity. We have overcome these structural deficiencies by constructing hierarchically structured separation layer on a porous substrate using lager titanate nanofibers and smaller boehmite nanofibers. This yields a radical change in membrane texture. The resulting membranes effectively filter out species larger than 60 nm at flow rates orders of magnitude greater than conventional membranes. This reveals a new direction in membrane fabrication.

A membrane filtration plant using suitable micro or ultra-filtration membranes has the potential to significantly increase pan stage capacity and improve sugar quality. Previous investigations by SRI and others have shown that membranes will remove polysaccharides, turbidity and colloidal impurities and result in lower viscosity syrups and molasses. However, the conclusion from those investigations was that membrane filtration was not economically viable. A comprehensive assessment of current generation membrane technology was undertaken by SRI. With the aid of two pilot plants provided by Applexion and Koch Membrane Systems, extensive trials were conducted at an Australian factory using clarified juice at 80–98°C as feed to each pilot plant. Conditions were varied during the trials to examine the effect of a range of operating parameters on the filtering characteristics of each of the membranes. These parameters included feed temperature and pressure, flow velocity, soluble solids and impurity concentrations. The data were then combined to develop models to predict the filtration rate (or flux) that could be expected for nominated operating conditions. The models demonstrated very good agreement with the data collected during the trials. The trials also identified those membranes that provided the highest flux levels per unit area of membrane surface for a nominated set of conditions. Cleaning procedures were developed that ensured the water flux level was recovered following a clean-in-place process. Bulk samples of clarified juice and membrane filtered juice from each pilot were evaporated to syrup to quantify the gain in pan stage productivity that results from the removal of high molecular weight impurities by membrane filtration. The results are in general agreement with those published by other research groups.
