The national telephone survey found that 6.5% of respondents reported experiencing a medical adverse event during the preceding 12 months. Most reported were medication incidents, with misdiagnosis or wrong treatment second most common. Predictors of adverse event reporting included health status, hospital admission, and length of time seeing regular doctor.

This work has, as its objective, the development of non-invasive and low-cost systems for monitoring and automatic diagnosing specific neonatal diseases by means of the analysis of suitable video signals. We focus on monitoring infants potentially at risk of diseases characterized by the presence or absence of rhythmic movements of one or more body parts. Seizures and respiratory diseases are specifically considered, but the approach is general. Seizures are defined as sudden neurological and behavioural alterations. They are age-dependent phenomena and the most common sign of central nervous system dysfunction. Neonatal seizures have onset within the 28th day of life in newborns at term and within the 44th week of conceptional age in preterm infants. Their main causes are hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy, intracranial haemorrhage, and sepsis. Studies indicate an incidence rate of neonatal seizures of 0.2% live births, 1.1% for preterm neonates, and 1.3% for infants weighing less than 2500 g at birth. Neonatal seizures can be classified into four main categories: clonic, tonic, myoclonic, and subtle. Seizures in newborns have to be promptly and accurately recognized in order to establish timely treatments that could avoid an increase of the underlying brain damage. Respiratory diseases related to the occurrence of apnoea episodes may be caused by cerebrovascular events. Among the wide range of causes of apnoea, besides seizures, a relevant one is Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS) \cite{Healy}. With a reported prevalence of 1 in 200,000 live births, CCHS, formerly known as Ondine's curse, is a rare life-threatening disorder characterized by a failure of the automatic control of breathing, caused by mutations in a gene classified as PHOX2B. CCHS manifests itself, in the neonatal period, with episodes of cyanosis or apnoea, especially during quiet sleep. The reported mortality rates range from 8% to 38% of newborn with genetically confirmed CCHS. Nowadays, CCHS is considered a disorder of autonomic regulation, with related risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Currently, the standard method of diagnosis, for both diseases, is based on polysomnography, a set of sensors such as ElectroEncephaloGram (EEG) sensors, ElectroMyoGraphy (EMG) sensors, ElectroCardioGraphy (ECG) sensors, elastic belt sensors, pulse-oximeter and nasal flow-meters. This monitoring system is very expensive, time-consuming, moderately invasive and requires particularly skilled medical personnel, not always available in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Therefore, automatic, real-time and non-invasive monitoring equipments able to reliably recognize these diseases would be of significant value in the NICU. A very appealing monitoring tool to automatically detect neonatal seizures or breathing disorders may be based on acquiring, through a network of sensors, e.g., a set of video cameras, the movements of the newborn's body (e.g., limbs, chest) and properly processing the relevant signals. An automatic multi-sensor system could be used to permanently monitor every patient in the NICU or specific patients at home. Furthermore, a wire-free technique may be more user-friendly and highly desirable when used with infants, in particular with newborns. This work has focused on a reliable method to estimate the periodicity in pathological movements based on the use of the Maximum Likelihood (ML) criterion. In particular, average differential luminance signals from multiple Red, Green and Blue (RGB) cameras or depth-sensor devices are extracted and the presence or absence of a significant periodicity is analysed in order to detect possible pathological conditions. The efficacy of this monitoring system has been measured on the basis of video recordings provided by the Department of Neurosciences of the University of Parma. Concerning clonic seizures, a kinematic analysis was performed to establish a relationship between neonatal seizures and human inborn pattern of quadrupedal locomotion. Moreover, we have decided to realize simulators able to replicate the symptomatic movements characteristic of the diseases under consideration. The reasons is, essentially, the opportunity to have, at any time, a 'subject' on which to test the continuously evolving detection algorithms. Finally, we have developed a smartphone App, called 'Smartphone based contactless epilepsy detector' (SmartCED), able to detect neonatal clonic seizures and warn the user about the occurrence in real-time.

Objetivo. Determinar el grado de satisfacción de las pacientes con la atención médica y de enfermería recibida en el Área de Hospitalización del Departamento de Gineco - Obstetricia del Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga. Metodología. Con un diseño descriptivo de corte transversal se recopiló información de 628 pacientes ingresadas a los servicios de Ginecología y Obstetricia entre marzo y mayo del 2014. Se analizó edad, instrucción, estado civil, residencia, diagnóstico al ingreso, al egreso y procedimiento realizado en los dos servicios y grado de satisfacción de las pacientes con el personal médico y el personal de enfermería. Resultados. Las pacientes del servicio de Ginecología representaron el 26.11 %, con un promedio de edad de 41.46 ± 11.41 años y las de Obstetricia el 73.89 % con una edad media de 28.62 ± 6.12 años. La instrucción más frecuente fue la secundaria, en la mayoría casadas y residen en el área urbana. El diagnóstico ginecológico más frecuente al ingreso y al egreso fue la hiperplasia endometrial con el 26.1 % en ambos casos. En el área Obstétrica, el embarazo a término sin complicaciones representó más del 50% de los diagnósticos tanto al ingreso como al egreso. La histerectomía fue el procedimiento ginecológico realizado con mayor frecuencia (25 %). La cesárea es el procedimiento obstétrico más frecuente (45.26 %). Conclusiones. Se obtienen valoraciones altas en la satisfacción de la atención médica en más del 65 % de las pacientes encuestadas tanto del personal médico como del personal de enfermería.

Introducción: La relación entre el sueño y la calidad de vida constituye una de las problemáticas de gran importancia en el ámbito de las condiciones de trabajo de funcionarios y personal médico de las unidades prestadoras de servicios hospitalarios. Estudios han evidenciado una relación entre la calidad del sueño y la calidad de vida y la falta de sueño se ha asociado con errores en los procedimientos y lesiones ocupacionales. Objetivo: Relacionar la calidad del sueño con la calidad de vida en personal de salud de una Institución de IV nivel, en la ciudad de Caracas (Venezuela). Materiales y métodos: Estudio de corte transversal con datos secundarios del personal de salud de un Hospital de IV nivel (93 registros) en la ciudad de Caracas (Venezuela). Se emplearon variables sociodemográficas, las relacionadas con calidad del sueño y provenientes de la encuesta “Índice de calidad de sueño de Pittsburgh” y con calidad de vida incluidas en el cuestionario SF-36. Se utilizo el programa estadístico SPSS para el análisis y se obtuvieron medidas de tendencia central y dispersión. Para relacionar las variables se emplearon las pruebas de Shapiro Wilk y el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman. Resultados: El total de los trabadores que ingresaron al estudio tuvieron un rango de edad entre 19 y 70 años y una desviación estándar de 10,9 años. Respecto al género, el 79,6% (n=74) fueron mujeres, y el 20,4% (n=19) fueron hombres. Con relación al componente de calidad de vida, se encontró que la mayor puntuación se asocia con el desempeño emocional (61,3%), la Vitalidad (73,5%), la Función Física (91%), el Dolor Físico (100%) y la Función Social (100%). Igualmente, se encontró que la totalidad de los trabajadores encuestados refirieron ser malos dormidores (91.4%). Al correlacionar la calidad de sueño con la calidad de vida, se encontró una asociación estadísticamente significativa, específicamente con el componente Latencia de sueño (p=0.008), Eficiencia habitual de sueño (p=0,001), Perturbaciones del Sueño (p=0,040) y Disfunción diurna (p= 0,008). Conclusión Este estudio reporto que la falta de sueño tiene relación con la calidad de vida del personal de salud y que la totalidad de los trabajadores de este estudio refirieron ser malos dormidores, hechos que demandan la atención de los programas de salud de las empresas, para promover medidas preventivas y correctivas respecto a las condiciones laborales como parte del bienestar de las personas.

Introduction: Little is known about the risk perceptions and attitudes of healthcare personnel, especially of emergency prehospital medical care personnel, regarding the possibility of an outbreak or epidemic event. Problem: This study was designed to investigate pre-event knowledge and attitudes of a national sample of the emergency prehospital medical care providers in relation to a potential human influenza pandemic, and to determine predictors of these attitudes. Methods: Surveys were distributed to a random, cross-sectional sample of 20% of the Australian emergency prehospital medical care workforce (n = 2,929), stratified by the nine services operating in Australia, as well as by gender and location. The surveys included: (1) demographic information; (2) knowledge of influenza; and (3) attitudes and perceptions related to working during influenza pandemic conditions. Multiple logistic regression models were constructed to identify predictors of pandemic-related risk perceptions. Results: Among the 725 Australian emergency prehospital medical care personnel who responded, 89% were very anxious about working during pandemic conditions, and 85% perceived a high personal risk associated with working in such conditions. In general, respondents demonstrated poor knowledge in relation to avian influenza, influenza generally, and infection transmission methods. Less than 5% of respondents perceived that they had adequate education/training about avian influenza. Logistic regression analyses indicate that, in managing the attitudes and risk perceptions of emergency prehospital medical care staff, particular attention should be directed toward the paid, male workforce (as opposed to volunteers), and on personnel whose relationship partners do not work in the health industry. Conclusions: These results highlight the potentially crucial role of education and training in pandemic preparedness. Organizations that provide emergency prehospital medical care must address this apparent lack of knowledge regarding infection transmission, and procedures for protection and decontamination. Careful management of the perceptions of emergency prehospital medical care personnel during a pandemic is likely to be critical in achieving an effective response to a widespread outbreak of infectious disease.
