Escola Pacheco e Silva anexada ao Hospital de Juqueri (1929-1940)

This article presents the results of research on the Hall-School installed in the Juqueri Hospital, São Paulo, in 1929, by initiative of the psychiatrist Antonio Carlos Pacheco e Silva, and organized by the pediatrician Vicente Baptista da Silva and professors Norberto de Souza Pinto and Celso Guimarães da Fonseca. It is regarded as a real pioneer project for the development of Special Education and of Psychology, formerly named as for the abnormals. One can neatly perceive the change in the treatment of a medical origin only to that of an inclusion of Psychology and Education in the development of children affected by mental deficiency or by psychopathies. The influence of the ideas of educators, such as the ones mentioned above, were fundamental for the changes.

Survival and movements of Magellanic penguins rehabilitated from oil fouling along the coast of South America, 2000-2010

Oil pollution is a significant conservation concern. We examined data from six institutions along the coast of South America: Emergency Relief Team of the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Fundacion Mundo Marino, Centro de Recuperacao de Animais Marinhos, Natura Patagonia, Associacao R3 Animal, and Mar del Plata Aquarium and data from resightings in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Falkland/Malvinas Islands. From 2000 to 2010, 2183 oiled Magellanic penguins were rehabilitated as part of the routine activities of these institutions or during emergency responses to eight oil spills in which they were involved; all rehabilitated penguins were flipper banded and released. Since their release, 41 penguins were resighted until 31 December 2011. The results demonstrate that, when combined with other prevention strategies, the rehabilitation of Magellanic penguins is a strategy that contributes to the mitigation of adverse effects of oil spills and chronic pollution to the species. Acto de presentación del libro "Canarias lee: 2009-2010" en la XXIII Feria del Libro de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Este acto tuvo lugar en la carpa institucional de la XXIII Feria del Libro de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, que se celebró en el Parque de San Telmo del día 29 de abril al 3 de mayo. El libro, que recoge los relatos premiados y finalistas del Premio de Relato Corto 2010, convocado por la Biblioteca y el Vicerrectorado de Cultura y Deporte de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, ha sido editado por el Servicio de Publicaciones y Difusión Científica de la ULPGC .
