The characteristics of dust particles deposited during the 2009 dust storm in the Gold Coast and Brisbane regions of Australia are discussed in this paper. The study outcomes provide important knowledge in relation to the potential impacts of dust storm related pollution on ecosystem health in the context that the frequency of dust storms is predicted to increase due to anthropogenic desert surface modifications and climate change impacts. The investigated dust storm contributed a large fraction of fine particles to the environment with an increased amount of total suspended solids, compared to dry deposition under ambient conditions. Although the dust storm passed over forested areas, the organic carbon content in the dust was relatively low. The primary metals present in the dust storm deposition were aluminium, iron and manganese, which are common soil minerals in Australia. The dust storm deposition did not contain significant loads of nickel, cadmium, copper and lead, which are commonly present in the urban environment. Furthermore, the comparison between the ambient and dust storm chromium and zinc loads suggested that these metals were contributed to the dust storm by local anthropogenic sources. The potential ecosystem health impacts of the 2009 dust storm include, increased fine solids deposition on ground surfaces resulting in an enhanced capacity to adsorb toxic pollutants as well as increased aluminium, iron and manganese loads. In contrast, the ecosystem health impacts related to organic carbon and other metals from dust storm atmospheric deposition are not considered to be significant.

Photoacoustic spectroscopy has been employed to study the electronic spectra of a variety of solids. The systems studied include powders of intensely coloured dyes, amorphous chalcogenides and oxide gels besides polycrystalline samples of several oxide materials. Surface sensitivity of the technique has been examined by study of dye adsorption on oxide surfaces and determination of surface areas of active oxides. Acidic and basic sites on catalyst surfaces have also been estimated by this technique.

Porous titanium dioxide synthesized with a bicontinuous surfactant template is a promising method that leads to a high active surface area electrode. The template used is based on a water/isooctane/dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate salt together with lecithin. Several parameters were varied during the synthesis to understand and optimize channel formation mechanisms. The material is patterned in stacked conical channels, widening towards the centre of the grains. The active surface area increased by 116% when the concentration of alkoxide precursors was decreased and increased by 241% when the template formation temperature was decreased to 10C. Increasing the oil phase viscosity tends to widen the pore aperture, thus decreasing the overall active surface area. Changing the phase proportions alters the microemulsion integrity and disrupts channel formation.

Approximate Box Relaxation method was used t'o simulate a plasma jet flow impinging on a flatplate at atmospheric pressure, to achieve a better understanding of the characteristics of plasma jet in materials surface treating. The flow fields under different conditions were simulated and analyzed. The distributions of temperature, velocity and pressure were obtained by modelling. Computed results indicate that this numerical method is suitable for simulation of the flow characteristics of plasma jet: and is helpful for understanding of the mechanism of the plasma-material processing.

Through layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly technique, iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles coated by poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and Preyssler-type polyoxometalates (NH4)(14)NaP5W30O110.31H(2)O (P5W30) were alternately deposited on quartz and ITO substrates, and 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrodes. Thus-prepared multilayer films were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. It was proved that the multilayer films are uniform and stable. And the electrocatalytic activities of the multilayer films can be fine-tuned by adjusting the assembly conditions in the LBL assembly process, such as the pH of the assembly solution. The multilayer films fabricated from P5W30 solutions dissolved in 0.1 M H2SO4 exhibit high electrocatalytic response and sensitivity toward the reduction of two substrates of important analytical interests, HNO2 and IO3- whereas the films assembled with P5W30 solutions dissolved in 1.0 M H2SO4 show remarkable electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Furthermore, the electrocatalytic properties of the HER of the latter film can be obtained from the former film upon exposure to 1.0 M H2SO4 for several hours.

Tetrakis (N-methylpyridyl) porphyrinato] cobalt (CoTMPyP) and 1:12 silicotungstic acid (SiW12) were alternately deposited on a 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA)-modified glassy carbon electrode through a layer-by-layer method. The resulting organic-inorganic hybrid films were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and UV/vis absorption spectroscopy. We proved that the prepared multilayer films are uniform and stable. SiW12-containing multilayer films (SiW12 as the outermost layer) exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The kinetic constants for HER were comparatively investigated at different layers Of SiW12/CoTMPyP multilayer film-modified electrodes by hydrogen evolution voltammetry. In addition, rotating disk electrode (RDE) and rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) voltammetric methods confirm that SiW12/CoTMPyP (CoTMPyP as the outermost layer) multilayer films catalyze almost a two-electron reduction of O-2 to H2O2 in pH 1-6 buffer solutions. Furthermore, P2W18/CoTMPyP films were also assembled, and their catalytic activity for HER is very different from that Of SiW12/CoTMPyP multilayer films.

An electrode modified with a polybasic lanthanide heteropoly tungstate/molybdate complex K10H3[Nd(SiMo7W4O39)(2)] entrapped into polypyrrole (PPy) film, denoted as Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy, exhibits three couples of two-electron redox waves in pH 1-5 buffer solutions. The redox waves are surface-controlled at lower scan rates and diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates. The effects of pH on the electrochemical behavior of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2) in PPy film were investigated in detail and compared with that of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2) in aqueous solution. The various charge states of PPy during its redox process have peculiar effects on the relationship between pH and formal potentials of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy at different acidities. The Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)-PPy cme can remarkably catalyze the electrochemical reduction of bromate with good stability. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
The nitric oxide ISO photocatalytic reactor system: Measurement of NOx removal activity and capacity
Resumo:
Although the NO removal-based air-purification ISO method ISO 22197-1:2007 is well established, its preconditioning requirements mean that only the initial activity of the photocatalyst under test is measured owing to the often-reported, gradual alteration of the surface kinetics for NO oxidation by air through the accumulation of surface HNO3. Herein, we compare the photocatalytic NO removal abilities of a number of different, common TiO2 materials, surface-saturated with photogenerated HNO3, with their behaviours observed during the typical 5 h-long ISO standard test. It is found that all the TiO2 materials studied eventually become largely NO to NO2 converters after sufficient exposure to NO under irradiation (>5 h) due to the accumulation of surface HNO3. The UV exposure time, t*, necessary to reach this HNO3 saturated condition is different for each different catalyst. As a consequence, an alternative preconditioning process for the ISO method is proposed which can be used to provide a more realistic measure of the photocatalytic activity of the underlying material and provide a measure of the NOx removing capacity of the photocatalytic material under test.

Ultra thin films based on CoFe were prepared from a composite target employing thermal evaporation. The microstructure of the films was modified by thermal annealing. The relationship between microstructure and magnetic properties of the films was investigated using techniques like glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The GXRD and TEM investigations showed an onset of crystallization of CoFe at around 373 K. The magnetic softness of the films improved with thermal annealing but at higher annealing temperature it is found to be deteriorating. Annealing inducedmodification of surface morphology of the alloy thin filmswas probed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Surface smoothening was observed with thermal annealing and the observed magnetic properties correlate well with surface modifications induced by thermal annealing

While protein microarray technology has been successful in demonstrating its usefulness for large scale high-throughput proteome profiling, performance of antibody/antigen microarrays has been only moderately productive. Immobilization of either the capture antibodies or the protein samples on solid supports has severe drawbacks. Denaturation of the immobilized proteins as well as inconsistent orientation of antibodies/ligands on the arrays can lead to erroneous results. This has prompted a number of studies to address these challenges by immobilizing proteins on biocompatible surfaces, which has met with limited success. Our strategy relates to a multiplexed, sensitive and high-throughput method for the screening quantification of intracellular signalling proteins from a complex mixture of proteins. Each signalling protein to be monitored has its capture moiety linked to a specific oligo âtag’. The array involves the oligonucleotide hybridization-directed localization and identification of different signalling proteins simultaneously, in a rapid and easy manner. Antibodies have been used as the capture moieties for specific identification of each signaling protein. The method involves covalently partnering each antibody/protein molecule with a unique DNA or DNA derivatives oligonucleotide tag that directs the antibody to a unique site on the microarray due to specific hybridization with a complementary tag-probe on the array. Particular surface modifications and optimal conditions allowed high signal to noise ratio which is essential to the success of this approach.

The interaction between polynyas and the atmospheric boundary layer is examined in the Laptev Sea using the regional, non-hydrostatic Consortium for Small-scale Modelling (COSMO) atmosphere model. A thermodynamic sea-ice model is used to consider the response of sea-ice surface temperature to idealized atmospheric forcing. The idealized regimes represent atmospheric conditions that are typical for the Laptev Sea region. Cold wintertime conditions are investigated with sea-ice–ocean temperature differences of up to 40 K. The Laptev Sea flaw polynyas strongly modify the atmospheric boundary layer. Convectively mixed layers reach heights of up to 1200 m above the polynyas with temperature anomalies of more than 5 K. Horizontal transport of heat expands to areas more than 500 km downstream of the polynyas. Strong wind regimes lead to a more shallow mixed layer with strong near-surface modifications, while weaker wind regimes show a deeper, well-mixed convective boundary layer. Shallow mesoscale circulations occur in the vicinity of ice-free and thin-ice covered polynyas. They are forced by large turbulent and radiative heat fluxes from the surface of up to 789 W m−2, strong low-level thermally induced convergence and cold air flow from the orographic structure of the Taimyr Peninsula in the western Laptev Sea region. Based on the surface energy balance we derive potential sea-ice production rates between 8 and 25 cm d−1. These production rates are mainly determined by whether the polynyas are ice-free or covered by thin ice and by the wind strength.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in pH 6.9 phosphate buffer solution was used to investigate each step of the procedure employed to modify a screen-printed electrode (SPE). The SPE was modified with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of cystamine (CYS, deposited from 20 mM solution), followed by glutaraldehyde (GA, 0.3 M solution). The Trypanosoma cruzi antigen was immobilized using different deposition times. The influence of incubation time (2-18 h) of protein was also investigated. The topography of modified electrode with this protein was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Interpretation of impedance data was based on physical and chemical adsorption, and degradation of the layer at high and meddle frequencies, and charge transfer reaction involving mainly the reduction of oxygen at low frequencies. EIS studies on modified electrodes with Tc85 protein immobilized for different incubation times indicated that the optimum incubation time was 6-8 h. It was demonstrated that EIS is a good technique to evaluate the different steps and the integrity of the surface modifications, and to optimize the incubation time of protein in the development of biosensors. This paper reports on the effect of sonication on SAz-1 and SWy-1 montmorillonite suspensions. Changes in the size of the particles of these materials and modifications of their properties have been investigated. The variation of the particle size has been analyzed by DLS (dynamic light scattering). In all cases the clay particles show a bimodal distribution. Sonication resulted in a decrease of the larger modal diameter, as well as a reduction of its volume percentage. Simultaneously, the proportion of the smallest particles increases. After 60 min of sonication, SAz-1 presented a very broad particle size distribution with a modal diameter of 283 nm. On the other hand, the SWy-1 sonicated for 60 min presents a bimodal distribution of particles at 140 and 454 nm. Changes in the properties of the clay suspensions due to sonication were evaluated spectroscopically from dye-clay interactions, using Methylene Blue. The acidic sites present in the interlamellar region, which are responsible for dye protonation, disappeared after sonication of the clay. The changes in the size of the scattering particles and the lack of acidic sites after sonication suggest that sonication induces delamination of the clay particles. (c) 2008 Elsevier Inc. Recent years have seen a significant growth in surface modifications in titanium implants, resulting in shorter healing times in regions with low bone density. Among the different techniques, subtraction by chemical agents to increase oxidation has been applied for surface treatment of dental implants. However, this technique is generally unable to remove undesirable oxides, formed spontaneously during machining of titanium parts, raising costs due to additional decontamination stages. In order to solve this problem, the present study used plasma as an energy source to both remove these oxides and oxidize the titanium surface. In this respect, Ti disks were treated by hollow cathode discharge, using a variable DC power supply and vacuum system. Samples were previously submitted to a cleaning process using an atmosphere of Ar, H2 and a mixture of both, for 20 and 60 min. The most efficient cleaning condition was used for oxidation in a mixture of argon (60%) and oxygen (40%) until reaching a pressure of 2.2 mbar for 60 min at 500°C. Surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), adhesion and cell proliferation. SEM showed less cell spreading and a larger number of projections orfilopodia in the treated samples compared to the control sample. AFM revealed surface defects in the treated samples, with varied geometry between peaks and valleys. Biological assays showed no significant difference in cell adhesion between treated surfaces and the control. With respect to cell proliferation, the treated surface exhibited improved performance when compared to the control sample. We concluded that the process was efficient in removing primary oxides as well as in oxidizing titanium surfaces
