New findings supporting the stability of the superoxide ion, O2˙(-), in the presence of the phosphonium cation, [P6,6,6,14](+), are presented. Extended electrochemical investigations of a series of neat phosphonium-based ILs with different anions, including chloride, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and dicyanamide, demonstrate the chemical reversibility of the oxygen reduction process. Quantum chemistry calculations show a short intermolecular distance (r = 3.128 Å) between the superoxide ion and the phosphonium cation. NMR experiments have been performed to assess the degree of long term degradation of [P6,6,6,14](+), in the presence of superoxide and peroxide species, showing no chemically distinct degradation products of importance in reversible air cathodes.

Metal-air batteries are a well-established technology that can offer high energy densities, low cost and environmental responsibility. Despite these favourable characteristics and utilisation of oxygen as the cathode reactant, these devices have been limited to primary applications, due to a number of problems that occur when the cell is recharged, including electrolyte loss and poor efficiency. Overcoming these obstacles is essential to creating a rechargeable metal-air battery that can be utilised for efficiently capturing renewable energy. Despite the first metal-air battery being created over 100 years ago, the emergence of reactive metals such as lithium has reinvigorated interest in this field. However the reactivity of some of these metals has generated a number of different philosophies regarding the electrolyte of the metal-air battery. Whilst much is already known about the anode and cathode processes in aqueous and organic electrolytes, the shortcomings of these electrolytes (i.e. volatility, instability, flammability etc.) have led some of the metal-air battery community to study room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) as non-volatile, highly stable electrolytes that have the potential to support rechargeable metal-air battery processes. In this perspective, we discuss how some of these initial studies have demonstrated the capabilities of RTILs as metal-air battery electrolytes. We will also show that much of the long-held mechanistic knowledge of the oxygen electrode processes might not be applicable in RTIL based electrolytes, allowing for creative new solutions to the traditional irreversibility of the oxygen reduction reaction. Our understanding of key factors such as the effect of catalyst chemistry and surface structure, proton activity and interfacial reactions is still in its infancy in these novel electrolytes. In this perspective we highlight the key areas that need the attention of electrochemists and battery engineers, in order to progress the understanding of the physical and electrochemical processes in RTILs as electrolytes for the various forms of rechargeable metal-air batteries.

Corrosion of steel is one of the main pathologies affecting reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environments or to molten salt. When corrosion occurs, an oxide layer develops around the reinforcement surface, which occupies a greater volume than the initial steel; thus, it induces internal pressure on the surrounding concrete that leads to cracking and, eventually, to full-spalling of the concrete cover. During the last years much effort has been devoted to understand the process of cracking; however, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the mechanical behavior of the oxide layer, which is essential in the prediction of cracking. Thus, a methodology has been developed and applied in this thesis to gain further understanding of the behavior of the steel-oxide-concrete system, combining experiments and numerical simulations. Accelerated corrosion tests were carried out in laboratory conditions, using the impressed current technique. To get experimental information close to the oxide layer, concrete prisms with a smooth steel tube as reinforcement were selected as specimens, which were designed to get a single main crack across the cover. During the tests, the specimens were equipped with instruments that were specially designed to measure the variation of inner diameter and volume of the tubes, and the width of the main crack was recorded using a commercial extensometer that was adapted to the geometry of the specimens. The boundary conditions were carefully designed so that plane current and strain fields were expected during the tests, resulting in nearly uniform corrosion along the length of the tube, so that the tests could be reproduced in numerical simulations. Series of tests were carried out with various current densities and corrosion depths. Complementarily, the fracture behavior of concrete was characterized in independent tests, and the gravimetric loss of the steel tubes was determined by standard means. In all the tests, the main crack grew very slowly during the first microns of corrosion depth, but after a critical corrosion depth it fully developed and opened faster; the current density influenced the critical corrosion depth. The variation of inner diameter and inner volume of the tubes had different trends, which indicates that the deformation of the tube was not uniform. After accelerated corrosion, the specimens were cut into slices, which were used in post-corrosion tests. The pattern of cracking along the reinforcement was investigated in slices that were impregnated under vacuum with resin containing fluorescein to enhance the visibility of cracks under ultraviolet lightening and a study was carried out to assess the presence of oxide into the cracks. In all the specimens, a main crack developed through the concrete cover, which was infiltrated with oxide, and several thin secondary cracks around the reinforcement; the number of cracks diminished with the corrosion depth of the specimen. For specimens with the same corrosion, the number of cracks and their position varied from one specimen to another and between cross-sections of a given specimen, due to the heterogeneity of concrete. Finally, the bond between the steel and the concrete was investigated, using a device designed to push the tubes of steel in the concrete. The curves of stress versus displacement of the tube presented a marked peak, followed by a steady descent, with notably influence of the corrosion depth and the crack width on the residual stress. To simulate cracking of concrete due to corrosion of the reinforcement, a numerical model was implemented. It combines finite elements with an embedded adaptable crack that reproduces cracking of concrete according to the basic cohesive model, and interface elements so-called expansive joint elements, which were specially designed to reproduce the volumetric expansion of oxide and incorporate its mechanical behavior. In the expansive joint element, a debonding effect was implemented consisting of sliding and separation, which was proved to be essential to achieve proper localization of cracks, and was achieved by strongly reducing the shear and the tensile stiffnesses of the oxide. With that model, simulations of the accelerated corrosion tests were carried out on 2- dimensional finite element models of the specimens. For the fracture behavior of concrete, the properties experimentally determined were used as input. For the oxide, initially a fluidlike behavior was assumed with nearly perfect sliding and separation; then the parameters of the expansive joint element were modified to fit the experimental results. Changes in the bulk modulus of the oxide barely affected the results and changes in the remaining parameters had a moderate effect on the predicted crack width; however, the deformation of the tube was very sensitive to variations in the parameters of oxide, due to the flexibility of the tube wall, which was crucial for indirect determination of the constitutive parameters of oxide. Finally, definitive simulations of the tests were carried out. The model reproduced the critical corrosion depth and the final behavior of the experimental curves; it was assessed that the variation of inner diameter of the tubes is highly influenced by its relative position with respect to the main crack, in accordance with the experimental observations. From the comparison of the experimental and numerical results, some properties of the mechanical behavior of the oxide were disclosed that otherwise could not have been measured.

The supercritical Rankine power cycle offers a net improvement in plant efficiency compared with a subcritical Rankine cycle. For fossil power plants the minimum supercritical steam turbine size is about 450MW. A recent study between Sandia National Laboratories and Siemens Energy, Inc., published on March 2013, confirmed the feasibility of adapting the Siemens turbine SST-900 for supercritical steam in concentrated solar power plants, with a live steam conditions 230-260 bar and output range between 140-200 MWe. In this context, this analysis is focused on integrating a line-focus solar field with a supercritical Rankine power cycle. For this purpose two heat transfer fluids were assessed: direct steam generation and molten salt Hitec XL. To isolate solar field from high pressure supercritical water power cycle, an intermediate heat exchanger was installed between linear solar collectors and balance of plant. Due to receiver selective coating temperature limitations, turbine inlet temperature was fixed 550ºC. The design-point conditions were 550ºC and 260 bar at turbine inlet, and 165 MWe Gross power output. Plant performance was assessed at design-point in the supercritical power plant (between 43-45% net plant efficiency depending on balance of plantconfiguration), and in the subcritical plant configuration (~40% net plant efficiency). Regarding the balance of plant configuration, direct reheating was adopted as the optimum solution to avoid any intermediate heat exchanger. One direct reheating stage between high pressure turbine and intermediate pressure turbine is the common practice; however, General Electric ultrasupercritical(350 bar) fossil power plants also considered doubled-reheat applications. In this study were analyzed heat balances with single-reheat, double-reheat and even three reheating stages. In all cases were adopted the proper reheating solar field configurations to limit solar collectors pressure drops. As main conclusion, it was confirmed net plant efficiency improvements in supercritical Rankine line-focus (parabolic or linear Fresnel) solar plant configurations are mainly due to the following two reasons: higher number of feed-water preheaters (up to seven)delivering hotter water at solar field inlet, and two or even three direct reheating stages (550ºC reheating temperature) in high or intermediate pressure turbines. However, the turbine manufacturer should confirm the equipment constrains regarding reheating stages and number of steam extractions to feed-water heaters.

ABSTRACT The synthesis of sub-micron photoluminescent particles has been widely studied during the past decade because of the promising industrial applications of these materials. A large number of matrices has been developed, being SrAl2O4 host doped with europium (Eu2+) and dysprosium (Dy3+) the most extensively studied, because of its better stability and long-lasting luminescence. These functional inorganic materials have a wide field of application in persistent luminous paints, inks and ceramics. Large attention has been paid to the development of an efficient method of preparation of SrAl2O4 powders, including solgel method, hydrothermal synthesis, laser synthesis, combustion synthesis and solid state reaction. Many of these techniques are not compatible with large-scale production and with the principles of sustainability. Moreover, industrial processing of highly crystalline powders usually requires high synthesis temperatures, typically between 1300 a 1900oC, with long processing times, especially for solid state reaction. As a result, the average particle size is typically within the 20-100 μm range. This large particle size is limiting for current applications that demand sub-micron particles. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop new approaches to overcome these limitations. Within this frame, it is necessary to undertake the following purposes: To study the parameters that govern the particle size reduction by milling and their relation with the photoluminescence properties. To obtain SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy by combustion synthesis, assessing the effect of the temperature and the amount of fuel (urea) to synthesize highly crystalline particles minimizing the presence of secondary phases. To develop new synthesis methods to obtain SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy powders. The molten salt synthesis has been proposed. As the method is a novel route, the reaction mechanism should be determine as a function of the salt mixture, the ratio of the salt, the kind of Al2O3 and their particle size and the temperature and the atmosphere of the thermal treatment. To improve the efficiency of the synthesis process to obtain SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy powders with optimal final properties and easily scalable. On the basis of decreasing the particle size by using commercial product SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ as raw material, the effects of different milling methods have been evaluated. Wet milling can significantly alter the structure of the material through hydrolysis reaction even in ethanol media. For overcoming the drawbacks of wet milling, a dry milling-based processes are studied. High energy dry milling process allows a great reduction of the particle size, however milling times above 10 min produce agglomeration and accelerates the decrease of the photoluminescence feature. To solve these issues the low energy dry milling process proposed effectively reduces the particle size to d50=2.8 μm, and improves the homogeneity avoiding the amorphization in comparison with previous methods. The X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope characterization allow to infer that the large variations in PL (Photoluminescence) values by high energy milling process are a consequence mainly of the crystallite size reduction. The lesser variation in PL values by low energy milling proces is related to the coherent crystalline domain preservation and the unnoticeable amorphization. These results corroborate that the photoluminescence intensity and the persistent luminescence of the SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ powders depend extrinsically on the morphology of the particles such as particle size, grain size, surface damage and intrinsically on the crystallinity (crystallite size); being the intrinsically effects the ones that have a significant influence on the photoluminescent response. By combustion method, nanostructured SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ sheets with a thickness ≤1 μm have been obtained. The amount of fuel (urea) in the reaction has an important influence on the phase composition; urea contents larger than the stoichiometric one require the presence of an oxidant agent such as HNO3 to complete the reaction. A higher amount of urea (excess of urea: denoted m>1, being m=1 the stoichiometric composition) including an oxidizing agent produces SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ particles with persistent luminescence due to the effective chelation of the cations and the creation of suitable atmospheric conditions to reduce the Eu3+ to Eu2+. Therefore, optimizing the synthesis parameters in combustion synthesis by using a higher amount of urea and an internal oxidizing agent allows to complete the reaction. The amount of secondary phases can be significantly reduced and the photoluminescence response can be enhanced. This situation is attributed to a higher energy that improves the crystallinity of the powders. The powders obtained have a particle size c.a. 5-25 μm with a thickness ≤1 μm and require relatively low ignition temperatures (600oC). It is possible to reduce the particle size by a low energy dry milling but this process implies the decrease of the photoluminescent response. However, a post-thermal treatment in a reducing atmosphere allows the improvement of the properties due to the increment of crystallinity and the reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+. Compared with the powder resulted from solid state method (commercial reference: average particle size, 20 μm and heterogeneous particle size distribution) the emission intensity of the powder prepared by combustion method achieve the values between 35% to 21% of the reference powder intensity. Moreover, the initial intensity of the decay curve is 20% of the intensity of the reference powder. Taking in account these results, it is necessary to explore other methods to synthesize the powders For that reason, an original synthetic route has been developed in this study: the molten salt assisted process to obtain highly crystalline SrAl2O4 powders with nanometric sized crystallites. The molten salt was composed of a mixture of NaCl and KCl using a 0.5:0.5 molar ratio (eutectic mixture hereafter abbreviated as (NaCl-KCl)e). The main advantages of salt addition is the increase of the reaction rate, the significant reduction of the synthesis temperature and the duration of the thermal treatment in comparison with classic solid state method. The SrAl2O4 formation is promoted due to the high mobility of the Sr2+ cations in the liquid medium. Different kinds of Al2O3 have been employed to evaluate the role of the size and the nature of this precursor on the kinetics of reaction, on the morphology and the final properties of the product. The SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ powders have pseudo-spherical morphology and particle size ≤0.5 μm when a sub-micron Al2O3 ( 0.5 μm Al2O3, 0.1 μm Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3) has been used. This can be attributed to a higher reactivity in the system and the dominance of dissolution-precipitation mechanism. However, the use of larger alumina (6 μm Al2O3) modifies the reaction pathway leading to a different reaction evolution. More specifically, the growth of SrAl2O4 sub-micron particles on the surface of hexagonal platelets of 6μm Al2O3 is promoted. The particles retain the shape of the original Al2O3 and this formation process can be attributed to a «core-shell» mechanism. The particles obtained exhibit different photoluminescent response as a function of the final morphology of the powder. Therefore, through this study, it has been elucidated the reaction mechanisms of SrAl2O4 formation assisted by (NaCl-KCl)e that are governed by the diffusion of SrCO3 and the reactivity of the alumina particles. Optimizing the Al2O3/SrO ratio of the SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy powders synthesized with 6 μm Al2O3 as a precursor, the secondary phases and the concentration of dopant needed can be reduced keeping the photoluminescent response of the synthesized powder. Compared with the commercial reference powder, up to 90% of the emission intensity of the reference powder has been achieved for the powder prepared by molten salt method using 6μm Al2O3 as alumina precursor. Concerning the initial intensity of the decay curve, 60% of the initial intensity of the reference powder has been obtained. Additionally, it is necessary to take into account that SrAl2O4 has two polymorphs: monoclinic symmetry that is stable at temperatures below 650oC and hexagonal symmetry that is stable above this temperature. Monoclinic phase shows luminescent properties. However, there is no clear agreement on the emission of the hexagonal structure. By molten salt, it is possible to stabilize the hexagonal phase of SrAl2O4 employing an excess of Al2O3 (Al2O3/SrO: 2) and γ-Al2O3 as a precursor. The existence of nanometric crystalline domains with lower size (≤20 nm) allows the stabilization of the hexagonal phase. Moreover, it has been evidenced that the hexagonal polymorph exhibits photoluminescent response. To sum up, the design of nanostructured SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ materials allows to obtain different morphologies and as consequence different photoluminescent responses. The reduction of temperature, duration of the thermal treatment and the precursors materials needed imply the decrease of the economic cost of the material. Therefore, the viability, suitability and scalability of the synthesis strategy developed in this work to process SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ are demonstrated.

Internally heated fluids are found across the nuclear fuel cycle. In certain situations the motion of the fluid is driven by the decay heat (i.e. corium melt pools in severe accidents, the shutdown of liquid metal reactors, molten salt and the passive control of light water reactors) as well as normal operation (i.e. intermediate waste storage and generation IV reactor designs). This can in the long-term affect reactor vessel integrity or lead to localized hot spots and accumulation of solid wastes that may prompt local increases in activity. Two approaches to the modeling of internally heated convection are presented here. These are based on numerical analysis using codes developed in-house and simulations using widely available computational fluid dynamics solvers. Open and closed fluid layers at around the transition between conduction and convection of various aspect ratios are considered. We determine optimum domain aspect ratio (1:7:7 up to 1:24:24 for open systems and 5:5:1, 1:10:10 and 1:20:20 for closed systems), mesh resolutions and turbulence models required to accurately and efficiently capture the convection structures that evolve when perturbing the conductive state of the fluid layer. Note that the open and closed fluid layers we study here are bounded by a conducting surface over an insulating surface. Conclusions will be drawn on the influence of the periodic boundary conditions on the flow patterns observed. We have also examined the stability of the nonlinear solutions that we found with the aim of identifying the bifurcation sequence of these solutions en route to turbulence.

The fabrication of highly-oriented polycrystalline ceramics of Bi 5Fe 0.5Co 0.5Ti 3O 15, prepared via molten salt synthesis and uniaxial pressing of high aspect ratio platelets is reported. Electron backscatter images show a secondary phase within the ceramic which is rich in cobalt and iron. The concentration of the secondary phase obtained from scanning electron microscopy is estimated at less than 2% by volume, below the detection limit of x-ray diffraction (XRD). The samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction, polarization-electric field measurements, superconducting quantum interference device as a function of sample orientation and vibrating sample magnetometry as a function of temperature. It is inferred from the data that the observed ferromagnetic response is dominated by the secondary phase. This work highlights the importance of rigorous materials characterisation in the study of multiferroics as small amounts of secondary phase, below the limit of XRD, can lead to false conclusions.

The PhD project addresses the potential of using concentrating solar power (CSP) plants as a viable alternative energy producing system in Libya. Exergetic, energetic, economic and environmental analyses are carried out for a particular type of CSP plants. The study, although it aims a particular type of CSP plant – 50 MW parabolic trough-CSP plant, it is sufficiently general to be applied to other configurations. The novelty of the study, in addition to modeling and analyzing the selected configuration, lies in the use of a state-of-the-art exergetic analysis combined with the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The modeling and simulation of the plant is carried out in chapter three and they are conducted into two parts, namely: power cycle and solar field. The computer model developed for the analysis of the plant is based on algebraic equations describing the power cycle and the solar field. The model was solved using the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software; and is designed to define the properties at each state point of the plant and then, sequentially, to determine energy, efficiency and irreversibility for each component. The developed model has the potential of using in the preliminary design of CSPs and, in particular, for the configuration of the solar field based on existing commercial plants. Moreover, it has the ability of analyzing the energetic, economic and environmental feasibility of using CSPs in different regions of the world, which is illustrated for the Libyan region in this study. The overall feasibility scenario is completed through an hourly analysis on an annual basis in chapter Four. This analysis allows the comparison of different systems and, eventually, a particular selection, and it includes both the economic and energetic components using the “greenius” software. The analysis also examined the impact of project financing and incentives on the cost of energy. The main technological finding of this analysis is higher performance and lower levelized cost of electricity (LCE) for Libya as compared to Southern Europe (Spain). Therefore, Libya has the potential of becoming attractive for the establishment of CSPs in its territory and, in this way, to facilitate the target of several European initiatives that aim to import electricity generated by renewable sources from North African and Middle East countries. The analysis is presented a brief review of the current cost of energy and the potential of reducing the cost from parabolic trough- CSP plant. Exergetic and environmental life cycle assessment analyses are conducted for the selected plant in chapter Five; the objectives are 1) to assess the environmental impact and cost, in terms of exergy of the life cycle of the plant; 2) to find out the points of weakness in terms of irreversibility of the process; and 3) to verify whether solar power plants can reduce environmental impact and the cost of electricity generation by comparing them with fossil fuel plants, in particular, Natural Gas Combined Cycle (NGCC) plant and oil thermal power plant. The analysis also targets a thermoeconomic analysis using the specific exergy costing (SPECO) method to evaluate the level of the cost caused by exergy destruction. The main technological findings are that the most important contribution impact lies with the solar field, which reports a value of 79%; and the materials with the vi highest impact are: steel (47%), molten salt (25%) and synthetic oil (21%). The “Human Health” damage category presents the highest impact (69%) followed by the “Resource” damage category (24%). In addition, the highest exergy demand is linked to the steel (47%); and there is a considerable exergetic demand related to the molten salt and synthetic oil with values of 25% and 19%, respectively. Finally, in the comparison with fossil fuel power plants (NGCC and Oil), the CSP plant presents the lowest environmental impact, while the worst environmental performance is reported to the oil power plant followed by NGCC plant. The solar field presents the largest value of cost rate, where the boiler is a component with the highest cost rate among the power cycle components. The thermal storage allows the CSP plants to overcome solar irradiation transients, to respond to electricity demand independent of weather conditions, and to extend electricity production beyond the availability of daylight. Numerical analysis of the thermal transient response of a thermocline storage tank is carried out for the charging phase. The system of equations describing the numerical model is solved by using time-implicit and space-backward finite differences and which encoded within the Matlab environment. The analysis presented the following findings: the predictions agree well with the experiments for the time evolution of the thermocline region, particularly for the regions away from the top-inlet. The deviations observed in the near-region of the inlet are most likely due to the high-level of turbulence in this region due to the localized level of mixing resulting; a simple analytical model to take into consideration this increased turbulence level was developed and it leads to some improvement of the predictions; this approach requires practically no additional computational effort and it relates the effective thermal diffusivity to the mean effective velocity of the fluid at each particular height of the system. Altogether the study indicates that the selected parabolic trough-CSP plant has the edge over alternative competing technologies for locations where DNI is high and where land usage is not an issue, such as the shoreline of Libya.

Biodiesel is an alternative diesel fuel that is produced from vegetable oils and animal fats. Currently, most biodiesel is made from oils, methanol, and an alkaline catalyst. Conventional catalysts is commonly used for catalyzing esterification of fatty acid to produce biodiesel. However, a better and greener method was found. An ionic liquid (IL) is a molten salt consisting of a cation and an anion, with low melting temperature. It offers a better solution than sulfuric acid, because it can be recycled and reused in subsequent runs after recovery steps. In this study, a Brønsted acidic IL, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([BMIM][HSO4]) was used as a catalyst in the esterification of oleic acid with methanol into biodiesel. The effect of different operation parameters such as methanol to oil molar ratio, amount of catalyst, reaction temperature, and reaction time were tested. The optimum conditions for esterification of oleic acid were identified as oleic acid/methanol molar ratio of 1/10, amount of catalyst 10 wt%, reaction time of 4 h, and reaction temperature of 90oC. FAME content of produced biodiesel was analyzed and confirmed using GC chromatography.

A semi-empirical model is presented for describing the interionic interactions in molten salts using the experimentally available structure data. An extension of Bertaut's method of non-overlapping charges is used to estimate the electrostatic interaction energy in ionic melts. It is shown, in agreement with earlier computer simulation studies, that this energy increases when an ionic salt melts. The repulsion between ions is described using a compressible ion theory which uses structure-independent parameters. The van der Waals interactions and the thermal free energy are also included in the total energy, which is minimised with respect to isostructural volume variations to calculate the equilibrium density. Detailed results are presented for three molten systems, NaCl, CaCl2 and ZnCl2, and are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with experiments. With reliable structural data now being reported for several other molten salts, the present study gains relevance.
