The main article aim was to investigate the collecting system of a dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit in pilot scale. Referring to the collecting system position, two options were analyzed: (i) top manifold and (ii) bottom manifold, pipes or plates. Qualitative and quantitative essays were performed, as image and stimulusresponse tests, respectively. The results of the essays standardized were adjusted by N-continuous stirred tank reactors in series and theoretical models of dispersion (low and high). The bottom manifold (plates with orifices) was more appropriate. The results pointed out that the N-continuous stirred tank reactors in series model was more adequate to describe the hydrodynamic behavior of the DAF unit.

The transport of people and goods contributes to the deterioration of the environment in urban areas because of the generation of pollution, such as, air, noise, soil, water or visual degradation. The heavy vehicles that use diesel as fuel are mainly responsible for the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), contributing to participation of the transport sector in air pollution. In addition, there is emission of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) whose main component is carbon dioxide (CO2). In most major cities, public transportation is often considered as a less polluting alternative compared to the private vehicle, in view of the potential to reduce, per passenger, the emissions of GHG and air pollutants. The study area was the city of Uberlândia and the objects of study were the trunk lines of the Sistema Integrado de Transporte (SIT). The emissions of NOx, PM and CO2 were estimated through the bottom-up approach which used the route of each bus line and also fuel consumption obtained through simulation from the TSIS software. The software has some result limitations, there are no report about the emission of pollutants by bus, and it is not able to change specifications for the fuel used by the fleet. The results obtained through calculations of pollutants and GHG emission by the bottom-up approach show that the emission is higher when using fuel comsuption obtained in simulation than using distance. For the results considering fuel and distance there was a reduction in emissions comparing ethanol and diesel.

As sociedades enfrentam problemas cuja complexidade aumenta na razão direta do crescimento da população e dos impactos causados por uma demanda exponencial de recursos, energia, água e espaço físico na Terra. Embora seja desejável que cada cidadão contemporâneo participe ativamente na resolução dos problemas e na tomada de decisões coletivas, muitos se sentem incapazes de, ao menos, entender a magnitude das questões e correspondentes implicações em um mundo definitivamente imerso na ciência e na tecnologia. Assim, a concepção de tempo – especialmente a de tempo geológico – é crucial para fazer emergir a educação em ciência como instrumento capaz de permitir que todos, jovens e adultos, compreendam o mundo onde vivem. As taxas de derrubada de florestas tropicais na grande bacia hidrográfica amazônica aceleraram-se desde a metade do século XX, com alguns intervalos de redução. Os elementos revelam ser inadiável fortalecer e reintroduzir as Ciências da Terra na Educação, especialmente no Brasil. O conhecimento pode contribuir efetivamente para formar cidadãos conscientes e críticos, capazes de tomar decisões equilibradas e ponderadas sobre atividades humanas que envolvam ocupação e uso do ambiente, materiais naturais e fontes de energia. Neste artigo procuramos refletir sobre a importância do conhecimento geocientífico para formar cidadãos capazes de contribuir nos dias de hoje para plena adoção do conceito de desenvolvimento sustentável. Os dois elementos são fundamentais para que seja possível formular novas interseções e introduzir inovações no contexto da região Amazónica.

Water injection is the most widely used method for supplementary recovery in many oil fields due to various reasons, like the fact that water is an effective displacing agent of low viscosity oils, the water injection projects are relatively simple to establish and the water availability at a relatively low cost. For design of water injection projects is necessary to do reservoir studies in order to define the various parameters needed to increase the effectiveness of the method. For this kind of study can be used several mathematical models classified into two general categories: analytical or numerical. The present work aims to do a comparative analysis between the results presented by flow lines simulator and conventional finite differences simulator; both types of simulators are based on numerical methods designed to model light oil reservoirs subjected to water injection. Therefore, it was defined two reservoir models: the first one was a heterogeneous model whose petrophysical properties vary along the reservoir and the other one was created using average petrophysical properties obtained from the first model. Comparisons were done considering that the results of these two models were always in the same operational conditions. Then some rock and fluid parameters have been changed in both models and again the results were compared. From the factorial design, that was done to study the sensitivity analysis of reservoir parameters, a few cases were chosen to study the role of water injection rate and the vertical position of wells perforations in production forecast. It was observed that the results from the two simulators are quite similar in most of the cases; differences were found only in those cases where there was an increase in gas solubility ratio of the model. Thus, it was concluded that in flow simulation of reservoirs analogous of those now studied, mainly when the gas solubility ratio is low, the conventional finite differences simulator may be replaced by flow lines simulator the production forecast is compatible but the computational processing time is lower.
