Les aspirateurs de turbines hydrauliques jouent un rôle crucial dans l’extraction de l’énergie disponible. Dans ce projet, les écoulements dans l’aspirateur d’une turbine de basse chute ont été simulés à l’aide de différents modèles de turbulence dont le modèle DDES, un hybride LES/RANS, qui permet de résoudre une partie du spectre turbulent. Déterminer des conditions aux limites pour ce modèle à l’entrée de l’aspirateur est un défi. Des profils d’entrée 1D axisymétriques et 2D instationnaires tenant compte des sillages et vortex induits par les aubes de la roue ont notamment été testés. Une fluctuation artificielle a également été imposée, afin d’imiter la turbulence qui existe juste après la roue. Les simulations ont été effectuées pour deux configurations d’aspirateur du projet BulbT. Pour la deuxième, plusieurs comparaisons avec des données expérimentales ont été faites pour deux conditions d’opération, à charge partielle et dans la zone de baisse rapide du rendement après le point de meilleur rendement. Cela a permis d’évaluer l’efficacité et les lacunes de la modélisation turbulente et des conditions limites à travers leurs effets sur les quantités globales et locales. Les résultats ont montrés que les structures tourbillonnaires et sillages sortant de la roue sont adéquatement résolus par les simulations DDES de l’aspirateur, en appliquant les profils instationnaires bidimensionnels et un schéma de faible dissipation pour le terme convectif. En outre, les effets de la turbulence artificielle à l’entrée de l’aspirateur ont été explorés à l’aide de l’estimation de l’intermittence du décollement, de corrélations en deux points, du spectre d’énergie et du concept de structures cohérentes lagrangiennes. Ces analyses ont montré que les détails de la dynamique de l’écoulement et de la séparation sont modifiés, ainsi que les patrons des lignes de transport à divers endroits de l’aspirateur. Cependant, les quantités globales comme le coefficient de récupération de l’aspirateur ne sont pas influencées par ces spécificités locales.

Recent radar and rain-gauge observations from the island of Dominica, which lies in the eastern Caribbean sea at 15 N, show a strong orographic enhancement of trade-wind precipitation. The mechanisms behind this enhancement are investigated using idealized large-eddy simulations with a realistic representation of the shallow trade-wind cumuli over the open ocean upstream of the island. The dominant mechanism is found to be the rapid growth of convection by the bulk lifting of the inhomogenous impinging flow. When rapidly lifted by the terrain, existing clouds and other moist parcels gain buoyancy relative to rising dry air because of their different adiabatic lapse rates. The resulting energetic, closely-packed convection forms precipitation readily and brings frequent heavy showers to the high terrain. Despite this strong precipitation enhancement, only a small fraction (1%) of the impinging moisture flux is lost over the island. However, an extensive rain shadow forms to the lee of Dominica due to the convective stabilization, forced descent, and wave breaking. A linear model is developed to explain the convective enhancement over the steep terrain.

Il presente lavoro si occupa dell’analisi numerica di combustione di gas a basso potere calorifico (gas di sintesi derivanti da pirolisi di biomasse). L’analisi è stata condotta su due principali geometrie di camera di combustione. La prima è un bruciatore sperimentale da laboratorio adatto allo studio delle proprietà di combustione del singas. Esso è introdotto in camera separatamente rispetto ad una corrente d’aria comburente al fine di realizzare una combustione non-premiscelata diffusiva in presenza di swirl. La seconda geometria presa in considerazione è la camera di combustione anulare installata sulla microturbina a gas Elliott TA 80 per la quale si dispone di un modello installato al banco al fine dell’esecuzione di prove sperimentali. I principali obbiettivi conseguiti nello studio sono stati la determinazione numerica del campo di moto a freddo su entrambe le geometrie per poi realizzare simulazioni in combustione mediante l’utilizzo di diversi modelli di combustione. In particolare è stato approfondito lo studio dei modelli steady laminar flamelet ed unsteady flamelet con cui sono state esaminate le distribuzioni di temperatura e delle grandezze tipiche di combustione in camera, confrontando i risultati numerici ottenuti con altri modelli di combustione (Eddy Dissipation ed ED-FR) e con i dati sperimentali a disposizione. Di importanza fondamentale è stata l’analisi delle emissioni inquinanti, realizzata per entrambe le geometrie, che mostra l’entità di tali emissioni e la loro tipologia. Relativamente a questo punto, il maggior interesse si sposta sui risultati ottenuti numericamente nel caso della microturbina, per la quale sono a disposizione misure di emissione ottenute sperimentalmente. Sempre per questa geometria è stato inoltre eseguito il confronto fra microturbina alimentata con singas a confronto con le prestazioni emissive ottenute con il gas naturale. Nel corso dei tre anni, l’esecuzione delle simulazioni e l’analisi critica dei risultati ha suggerito alcuni limiti e semplificazioni eseguite sulle griglie di calcolo realizzate per lo studio numerico. Al fine di eliminare o limitare le semplificazioni o le inesattezze, le geometrie dei combustori e le griglie di calcolo sono state migliorate ed ottimizzate. In merito alle simulazioni realizzate sulla geometria del combustore della microturbina Elliott TA 80 è stata condotta dapprima l’analisi numerica di combustione a pieno carico per poi analizzare le prestazioni ai carichi parziali. Il tutto appoggiandosi a tecniche di simulazione RANS ed ipotizzando alimentazioni a gas naturale e singas derivato da biomasse. Nell’ultimo anno di dottorato è stato dedicato tempo all’approfondimento e allo studio della tecnica Large Eddy Simulation per testarne una applicazione alla geometria del bruciatore sperimentale di laboratorio. In tale simulazione è stato implementato l’SGS model di Smagorinsky-Lilly completo di combustione con modelli flamelet. Dai risultati sono stati estrapolati i profili di temperatura a confronto con i risultati sperimentali e con i risultati RANS. Il tutto in diverse simulazioni a diverso valore del time-step imposto. L’analisi LES, per quanto migliorabile, ha fornito risultati sufficientemente precisi lasciando per il futuro la possibilità di approfondire nuovi modelli adatti all’applicazione diretta sulla MTG.

Il lavoro è dedicato all'analisi fisica e alla modellizzazione dello strato limite atmosferico in condizioni stabili. L'obiettivo principale è quello di migliorare i modelli di parametrizzazione della turbulenza attualmente utilizzati dai modelli meteorologici a grande scala. Questi modelli di parametrizzazione della turbolenza consistono nell' esprimere gli stress di Reynolds come funzioni dei campi medi (componenti orizzontali della velocità e temperatura potenziale) usando delle chiusure. La maggior parte delle chiusure sono state sviluppate per i casi quasi-neutrali, e la difficoltà è trattare l'effetto della stabilità in modo rigoroso. Studieremo in dettaglio due differenti modelli di chiusura della turbolenza per lo strato limite stabile basati su assunzioni diverse: uno schema TKE-l (Mellor-Yamada,1982), che è usato nel modello di previsione BOLAM (Bologna Limited Area Model), e uno schema sviluppato recentemente da Mauritsen et al. (2007). Le assunzioni delle chiusure dei due schemi sono analizzate con dati sperimentali provenienti dalla torre di Cabauw in Olanda e dal sito CIBA in Spagna. Questi schemi di parametrizzazione della turbolenza sono quindi inseriti all'interno di un modello colonnare dello strato limite atmosferico, per testare le loro predizioni senza influenze esterne. Il confronto tra i differenti schemi è effettuato su un caso ben documentato in letteratura, il "GABLS1". Per confermare la validità delle predizioni, un dataset tridimensionale è creato simulando lo stesso caso GABLS1 con una Large Eddy Simulation. ARPS (Advanced Regional Prediction System) è stato usato per questo scopo. La stratificazione stabile vincola il passo di griglia, poichè la LES deve essere ad una risoluzione abbastanza elevata affinchè le tipiche scale verticali di moto siano correttamente risolte. Il confronto di questo dataset tridimensionale con le predizioni degli schemi turbolenti permettono di proporre un insieme di nuove chiusure atte a migliorare il modello di turbolenza di BOLAM. The rate of generation of fluctuations with respect to the scalar values conditioned on the mixture fraction, which significantly affects turbulent nonpremixed combustion processes, is examined. Simulation of the rate in a major mixing model is investigated and the derived equations can assist in selecting the model parameters so that the level of conditional fluctuations is better reproduced by the models. A more general formulation of the multiple mapping conditioning (MMC) model that distinguishes the reference and conditioning variables is suggested. This formulation can be viewed as a methodology of enforcing certain desired conditional properties onto conventional mixing models. Examples of constructing consistent MMC models with dissipation and velocity conditioning as well as of combining MMC with large eddy simulations (LES) are also provided. An experimental and numerical study of turbulent fire suppression is presented. For this work, a novel and canonical facility has been developed, featuring a buoyant, turbulent, methane or propane-fueled diffusion flame suppressed via either nitrogen dilution of the oxidizer or application of a fine water mist. Flames are stabilized on a slot burner surrounded by a co-flowing oxidizer, which allows controlled delivery of either suppressant to achieve a range of conditions from complete combustion through partial and total flame quenching. A minimal supply of pure oxygen is optionally applied along the burner to provide a strengthened flame base that resists liftoff extinction and permits the study of substantially weakened turbulent flames. The carefully designed facility features well-characterized inlet and boundary conditions that are especially amenable to numerical simulation. Non-intrusive diagnostics provide detailed measurements of suppression behavior, yielding insight into the governing suppression processes, and aiding the development and validation of advanced suppression models. Diagnostics include oxidizer composition analysis to determine suppression potential, flame imaging to quantify visible flame structure, luminous and radiative emissions measurements to assess sooting propensity and heat losses, and species-based calorimetry to evaluate global heat release and combustion efficiency. The studied flames experience notable suppression effects, including transition in color from bright yellow to dim blue, expansion in flame height and structural intermittency, and reduction in radiative heat emissions. Still, measurements indicate that the combustion efficiency remains close to unity, and only near the extinction limit do the flames experience an abrupt transition from nearly complete combustion to total extinguishment. Measurements are compared with large eddy simulation results obtained using the Fire Dynamics Simulator, an open-source computational fluid dynamics software package. Comparisons of experimental and simulated results are used to evaluate the performance of available models in predicting fire suppression. Simulations in the present configuration highlight the issue of spurious reignition that is permitted by the classical eddy-dissipation concept for modeling turbulent combustion. To address this issue, simple treatments to prevent spurious reignition are developed and implemented. Simulations incorporating these treatments are shown to produce excellent agreement with the experimentally measured data, including the global combustion efficiency.

Since the majority of the population of the world lives in cities and that this number is expected to increase in the next years, one of the biggest challenges of the research is the determination of the risk deriving from high temperatures experienced in urban areas, together with improving responses to climate-related disasters, for example by introducing in the urban context vegetation or built infrastructures that can improve the air quality. In this work, we will investigate how different setups of the boundary and initial conditions set on an urban canyon generate different patterns of the dispersion of a pollutant. To do so we will exploit the low computational cost of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations to reproduce the dynamics of an infinite array of two-dimensional square urban canyons. A pollutant is released at the street level to mimic the presence of traffic. RANS simulations are run using the k-ɛ closure model and vertical profiles of significant variables of the urban canyon, namely the velocity, the turbulent kinetic energy, and the concentration, are represented. This is done using the open-source software OpenFOAM and modifying the standard solver simpleFoam to include the concentration equation and the temperature by introducing a buoyancy term in the governing equations. The results of the simulation are validated with experimental results and products of Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) from previous works showing that the simulation is able to reproduce all the quantities under examination with satisfactory accuracy. Moreover, this comparison shows that despite LES are known to be more accurate albeit more expensive, RANS simulations represent a reliable tool if a smaller computational cost is needed. Overall, this work exploits the low computational cost of RANS simulations to produce multiple scenarios useful to evaluate how the dispersion of a pollutant changes by a modification of key variables, such as the temperature.

In this paper, we present and apply a new three-dimensional model for the prediction of canopy-flow and turbulence dynamics in open-channel flow. The approach uses a dynamic immersed boundary technique that is coupled in a sequentially staggered manner to a large eddy simulation. Two different biomechanical models are developed depending on whether the vegetation is dominated by bending or tensile forces. For bending plants, a model structured on the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation has been developed, whilst for tensile plants, an N-pendula model has been developed. Validation against flume data shows good agreement and demonstrates that for a given stem density, the models are able to simulate the extraction of energy from the mean flow at the stem-scale which leads to the drag discontinuity and associated mixing layer.

We review briefly recent progress on understanding the role of surface waves on the marine atmospheric boundary layer and the ocean mixed layer and give a global perspective on these processes by analysing ERA-40 data. Ocean surface waves interact with the marine atmospheric boundary layer in two broad regimes: (i) the conventional wind-driven wave regime, when fast winds blow over slower moving waves, and (ii) a wave-driven wind regime when long wavelength swell propagates under low winds, and generates a wave-driven jet in the lower part of the marine boundary layer. Analysis of ERA-40 data indicates that the wave-driven wind regime is as prevalent as the conventional wind-driven regime. Ocean surface waves also change profoundly mixing in the ocean mixed layer through generation of Langmuir circulation. Results from large-eddy simulation are used here to develop a scaling for the resulting Langmuir turbulence, which is a necessary step in developing a parametrization of the process. ERA-40 data is then used to show that the Langmuir regime is the predominant regime over much of the global ocean, providing a compelling motivation for parameterising this process in ocean general circulation models.

Practically all extant work on flows over obstacle arrays, whether laboratory experiments or numerical modelling, is for cases where the oncoming wind is normal to salient faces of the obstacles. In the field, however, this is rarely the case. Here, simulations of flows at various directions over arrays of cubes representing typical urban canopy regions are presented and discussed. The computations are of both direct numerical simulation and large-eddy simulation type. Attention is concentrated on the differences in the mean flow within the canopy region arising from the different wind directions and the consequent effects on global properties such as the total surface drag, which can change very significantly—by up to a factor of three in some circumstances. It is shown that for a given Reynolds number the typical viscous forces are generally a rather larger fraction of the pressure forces (principally the drag) for non-normal than for normal wind directions and that, dependent on the surface morphology, the average flow direction deep within the canopy can be largely independent of the oncoming wind direction. Even for regular arrays of regular obstacles, a wind direction not normal to the obstacle faces can in general generate a lateral lift force (in the direction normal to the oncoming flow). The results demonstrate this and it is shown how computations in a finite domain with the oncoming flow generated by an appropriate forcing term (e.g. a pressure gradient) then lead inevitably to an oncoming wind direction aloft that is not aligned with the forcing term vector.
