This work describes the presence of Contracaecum sp. larvae (Nematoda: Anisakidae) found in food fish of economic importance captured in occidental marshlands in the State of Maranhao, Brazil. Hoplias malabaricus (Erythrinidae) and Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (Erythrinidae), commonly called traira and jeju, respectively, were examined. All H. malabaricus were infected with a mean intensity of 24.6 +/- 38.3 (1-137 parasites per host) while eighty percent of H. unitaeniatus showed a mean intensity of 10.4 +/- 9.2 (2-31) parasites. Nematodes were most similar to larvae of a type 2 described by Moravec, Kohn and Fernandes [Moravec, F., Kohn, A., Fernandes, B.M.M., 1993. Nematode parasites of fishes of the Parana River, Brazil. Part 2. Seuratoidea, Ascaridoidea, Habronematoidea and Acuarioidea. Folia Parasitol. 40, 115-134], but differed in having a longer intestinal caecum and greater caecum/ventricular appendix ratio. Growth and survival rates of pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, larvae fed prepared diets containing different animal protein sources were evaluated. Four diets with the same level of crude protein (CP) (36%) and calories (4.02 kcal gross energy/g of diet) were fed to the larvae. Diets were formulated to contain one of four protein sources: (1) fish meal (FM), (2) tilapia residue silage (TS), (3) protein hydrolysate from tilapia residue (HT), and (4) eviscerated tilapia residue (HET). Larvae were fed Artemia nauplii for six days, prior to the start of the study, and the prepared diet was supplied from day 7 until the study concluded. Variance analysis showed no significant differences (P > 0.05) for survival rates and larval final lengths among treatments. However, final average weights were significantly different (P < 0.05 for larvae fed FM and HT. Average survival rates were relatively high and ranged from 68.1% to 73.9%. After the live food was replaced by prepared diets, no larval growth was observed for any treatment. Fish protein hydrolysate (HT and HET) and fish silage showed potential to be used as ingredients in the diet of pacu larvae. However, hydrolysate inclusion levels, processing methods to minimize nutrient lixiviation, and the best moment to replace live food with an inert diet (weaning) need further investigation. © 2003 by The Haworth Press, Inc. O presente estudo apresenta um levantamento parasitológico de larvas de nematóides de Iguanodectes spilurus capturados no fluxo do Rio Caeté, nordeste do Pará, Brasil. Um total de 176 espécimes com médias de 1,36 ± 0,75 g de peso e 5,53 ± 0,98 cm de comprimento total foram analisados. Foram identificados em 124 peixes os nematóides Capillaria sp., Procamallanus sp. e da família Anisakidae, apresentaram uma prevalência de 70,45% e intensidade de infecção de 1,81 a 4,70 larvas. A maior prevalência foi de 57,38% no fígado, mas não foi observada sazonalidade, indicando alta potência de infecção ao longo do ano. A sazonalidade foi observada em peixes parasitados no intestino, estômago e ceco com prevalência e intensidade média de 17,61% e 2,32 parasitas, 12,5% e 1,81 parasitas, 10,79% e 2,21 parasitas, respectivamente. A maior infecção foi encontrada na estação chuvosa, provavelmente devido ao aumento da disponibilidade de hospedeiros intermediários ou de alimentos.

Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar o impacto das atividades antropogênicas da cidade de Belém pela comparação da qualidade da água e das comunidades de larvas de peixes em dois igarapés que desembocam no rio Guamá. Um dos igarapés atravessa um subúrbio pobre e populoso de Belém, enquanto o outro é localizado em uma ilha de Belém, declarada Área de Proteção Ambiental desde 1997. Dois pontos de coletas foram definidos em cada igarapé e monitorados durante oito horas, a cada três meses e durante um ano. O igarapé em região urbana apresentou fortes alterações na qualidade da água, durante o ano todo e em todas as marés, e isto deve se essencialmente a presença de um elevado número de coliformes termotolerantes. Poucas larvas foram encontradas. A água foi considerada imprópria para uso e atividades humanas, assim como para a vida aquática. O igarapé da ilha apresentou primeiros sinais de contaminação por nutrientes e bactéria durante o período chuvoso, parcialmente decorrente de fontes de poluição difusa. Em ambos os córregos, as comunidades larvais foram quase exclusivamente compostas de clupeiformes. Todos os estágios de desenvolvimento larval foram encontrados. Densidades e proporções mais elevadas de larvas recém eclodidas foram registradas durante a estação seca e associadas à presença de nitrato. Resultados apontam a necessidade de desenvolver um sistema de drenagem urbano para esgoto e água pluvial na maior brevidade, e recomenda um estudo de monitoramento integrado do igarapé na Área de Proteção Ambiental.

In the present study, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) genotoxicity was investigated in a one-step predator-prey relationship with the trophic-related marine species. Florida pompanos were fed for 5 and 10 days with pink shrimp post larvae previously exposed to benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) concentrations. Parent BaP body burden was measured in samples of Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis. BaP metabolites were determined in bile samples of Trachinotus carolinus and DNA damage was assessed through the comet and erythrocyte nuclear abnormalities (ENAs) assays in fish erythrocytes. BaP body burden increased significantly with the PAH concentration in pink shrimp PLs as well as the fish bile BaP metabolites. Both, comet and ENAs assays indicated significant increase on erythrocyte DNA damage of Florida pompanos fed with BaP-exposed pink shrimp on both feeding periods. The trophic route of BaP genotoxicity is discussed as well as the PAH biotransformation as the inducing mechanism for the DNA damages observed.

Steindachneridion parahybae is a freshwater catfish endemic to the Paraíba do Sul River and is classified as an endangered Neotropical species. An increasing number of conservation biologists are incorporating morphological and physiological research data to help conservation managers in rescue these endangered species. This study investigated the embryonic and larval development of S. parahybae in captivity, with emphasis in major events during the ontogeny of S. parahybae. Broodstocks were artificially induced to reproduce, and the extrusion occurred 200-255 degree-hours after hormonal induction at 24°C. Larval ontogeny was evaluated every 10 minutes under microscopic/stereomicroscopic using fresh eggs samples. The main embryogenic development stages were identified: zygote, cleavage, including the morula, blastula, gastrula phase, organogenesis, and hatching. The extruded oocytes showed an average diameter of 1.10 ± 0.10 mm, and after fertilization and hydration of eggs, the average diameter of eggs increased to about 1.90 ± 0.60 mm, characterized by a large perivitelline space that persisted up to embryo development, the double chorion, and the poles (animal and vegetative). Cell division started about 2 minutes after fertilization (AF), resulting in 2, 4, 8 (4 x 2 arrangement of cells), 16 (4 x 4), 32 (4 x 8) and 64 (2 x 4 x 8) cells. Furthermore, the blastula and gastrula stages followed after these cells divisions. The closed blastopore occurred at 11 h 20 min AF; following the development, the organogenetic stages were identified and subdivided respectively in: early segmentation phase and late segmentation phase. In the early segmentation phase, there was the establishment of the embryonic axis, and it was possible to distinguish between the cephalic and caudal regions; somites, and the optic vesicles developed about 20 h AF. Total hatching occurred at 54 h AF, and the larvae average length was 4.30 ± 0.70 mm. Gradual yolk sac reduction was observed during the first two days of larval development. The first feeding occurred at the end of the second day. During the larval phase, cannibalism, heterogeneous larval growth and photophobia were also observed. This information will be important in improving the artificial reproduction protocols of S. parahybae in controlled breeding programs.

[EN]Most marine fish larvae require high amounts of n-3 HUFA (highly unsaturated fatty acids) such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (Watanabe, 1982; Izquierdo, 1996). Fish larvae tissue lipids are also very high in n-3 HUFA, what implies a higher risk of peroxidation (Sargent et al. 1999) and cellular damage (Kanazawa, 1991), requiring then antioxidants to protect them intra- and extra-cellularly from free radical compounds. Vitamin E (Vit E) functions as a chain breaking antioxidant, reacting with the lipid peroxide radical produced and preventing the further reaction with a new PUFA. Hence their requirements are related with the dietary and tissue PUFA contents. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of dietary Vit E on gilthead sea bream and sea bass survival, growth and stress, at different n-3 HUFA levels.
