In recent years, the high percentage of lawyers in Portugal became a controversial issue. As a large number of law graduates have been competing for admission at the Bar, this trend is creating new challenges to the profession, with important resonances in the Bar admission policy. The purpose of this presentation is to illustrate the progress made by women in legal professions, in Portugal, over the last decades. In order to contextualize our analysis, we begin with an overview of the position of women in the labor market and then focus on the legal professions. Firstly, the increasing presence of women in different segments of the legal field is analyzed by means of a statistical approach. Afterwards, we draw a critical analysis highlighting the bearing of these developments and deconstructing their meaning in terms of career patterns, remuneration and professional status. Our analysis of contemporary official data on legal professions reveals that even though women are occupying a growing number of positions in private practice, they earn lower salaries, have lower job satisfaction and have a more critical reasoning towards the public image of lawyers. Concerning magistrates, women working in superior courts continue to be underrepresented. Overall, we conclude that the increasing integration of women in legal professions is not straightforward, and there are still many aspects that need to be addressed the private and public sector.

Initial studies have demonstrated that intra- renal infusion of Ang (1-7) caused a diuresis and natriuresis that was proportional to the degree of activation of the Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone System (RAAS). This raised the question as why the magnitude of this diuresis and natriuresis was compromised in rats receiving a high sodium diet (suppressed RAAS) and enhanced in low sodium fed rats (activated RAAS)? Could the answer lie with changes in intra-renal AT1 or Mas receptor expression? Interestingly, the observed Ang (1-7) induced increases in sodium and water excretion in rats receiving either a low or normal sodium diet were and blocked in the presence of the AT 1 receptor antagonist (Losartan) in the presence of the, 'Mas' receptor antagonist (A-779). These data suggest that both AT1 and 'Mas' receptors need to be functional in order to fully mediate the renal responses to intra-renal Ang (1-7) infusion. Importantly, further experimentation also revealed that there is a proportional relationship between AT 1 receptor expression in the rat renal cortex and the magnitude of the excretory actions of intra renal Ang (1-7) infusion, which is only partially dependent on the level of 'Mas' receptor expression. These observations suggest that although Ang (1-7) induced increases in sodium and water excretion are mediated by the Mas receptor, the magnitude of these excretory responses appear to be dependent upon the level of AT 1 receptor expression and more specifically Ang II/ AT 1 receptor signalling. Thus in rats receiving a low sodium diet, Ang (1-7) acts via the Mas receptor to inhibit Ang II/ AT 1 receptor signalling. In rats receiving a high sodium diet the down regulated AT 1 receptor expression implies a reduction in Ang II/ AT 1 receptor signalling which renders the counter-regulatory effects of intra-renal Ang (1-7) infusion redundant.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to consider the occupational stress experienced by chefs and the moderating influence of coping behaviour and locus of control on stress outcomes. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 40 working chefs were surveyed. They were asked to complete an occupational stress questionnaire, the General Health Questionnaire. Differences werer/>sought between gender and locus of control and stress measures, and correlations were carried out between key variables. FindingsThe reported stress was markedly higher than in previous research. Excessive workload,r/>feeling undervalued and communication issues were common and bullying and threats of violence were present for some. Unexpectedly, locus of control was unable to predict stress experiences. Explanations were offered, such as the possibility that those who perceive they have a strong sense of control may believe that this, paradoxically, affords them the opportunity to engage in unhealthy behaviours. Research limitations/implications – Limitations of the research include the influence of the wider environment, specifically the history of political violence in the province, and its possible effect on stress outcomes. However, this may be negated by the many positive effects peace has brought over the last decade. In drawing conclusions it is important to note the limitations of the sample size and the self-reporting nature of survey responses. Further research could usefully incorporate well-being as well as stress measures, including physiological ones. It would be worth exploring further how ones sense of control affects perceptions of stress and, in turn, the coping behaviours engaged in. Practical implicationsPractical implications include the need for managers and head chefs to provide more feedback to employees, to validate their good work and to foster a supportive working environment. Norms in the working environment endorsing aggressive behaviour must be challenged.r/>Staff appraisals should consider the need to have work that involves variety and challenge, especially where changes involve increases in workload. Originality/valueThis paper identifies some important ingredients to reduce distress and it will be of value to chefs and other kitchen staff and, more broadly, to those involved in people management.
