The jewels, be they used as decorations or some other specific function, are carriers of meaning, representatives of groups, peoples, territories or historical moments. In preliminary studies on the history of Brazilian jewelry, and the recent ascendancy of Brazil in the jewelry market, this research seeks to delve into the history of the production of religious jewelry from São Paulo in the Brazilian colonial period, through the collection of the São Paulo Museum of Sacred Art. This study aims to analyze the museum's collection of jewelry, in two respects: the pieces of jewelry and its pictorial representation in works of art.

Body adornment has been used as a ornament, ritualistic object, religious icon or as symbol demonstration of status and power in many different cultures. In Brazil, own visuality develops from the cultural syncretism. Thus, together with the mode of dress, the african-Brazilian jewelry acquires peculiarities derived from cultural identities that coexist. This paper proposes a look at africanBrazilian jewelry through visual representation in some works of Jean-Baptiste Debret - French painter member of the French Artistic Mission that registered objects and everyday scenes of slaves and freemen, of poor whites and aristocrats of Rio de Janeiro in the early nineteenth century. We are looking for jewelry as a historical record of lifestyles from a time and place with a social, economic and cultural local configuration.

Should we celebrate Christmas during war times? Why not? Does it help the heartache to sit glumly in the corner and moan? Will this help one or will it help the boy or girl in the service of his or her country? In these war times with all their bad influences and horrible happenings we need to keep up at home every type of mellowing influence and to search out all the inspirational ideals available. It's fun to make gifts. Much of the joy of Christmas comes in the anticipation and preparation. The making of gifts adds personal touch for both the giver and the one who receives the remembrance. The suggestions given in this circular have been chosen for their timeliness of materials available and usefulness. This publication was donated in the memory of Patricia Clare Bennett Meyer by her children.

From time immemorial man has used gold as a medium of exchange, a measure of value, as jewelry and for ornamentation. Placer gold has led directly or indirectly to the settlement of lands, California and Alaska being the two best known examples. It has led the way to the discovery of other important mineral wealth, the discovery of the copper and silver deposits at Butte, Montana and the discovery of the silver deposits at Cripple Creek, Colorado being two good examples.

Do relative concerns on visible consumption give rise to economic distortions? We re-examine the question posited by Arrow and Dasgupta (2009) building upon their general framework but recognizing that relative concerns can only apply to visible goods (e.g., cars, clothing, jewelry) and that households consume both visible and non-visible goods. Contrary to Arrow and Dasgupta (2009), the answer to this question turns to be always affirmative: the competitive equilibrium will always be different than the socially optimal one, since individuals do not take into account the negative externality they exert on others through the consumption of the visible good, while the social planner does. If one invokes separability assumptions, then the steady state competitive equilibrium consumption of non-visible goods will be strictly lower than the socially optimal one.
