Accurate Approach in the Treatment of Oral Bisphosphonate-Related Jaw Osteonecrosis

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is not completely understood and difficult to treat. Even though the occurrence of BRONJ is mainly related to the therapy with intravenous bisphosphonates (BPs), this article reports a case of long-term oral BP use and BRONJ occurrence. In addition, a literature review provides some additional information about BPs, BRONJ, and also a guideline for the prevention and treatment of BRONJ stages. A 79-year-old patient presented intense and persistent pain, purulent secretion, and exposed bone at the right side of the lower jaw. Thus, she was submitted to anamnesis, radiologic and tomographic examinations, and bacterial culture and sensitivity tests. These procedures were followed by surgical debridement of the bone and surrounding tissues/cyst and antibiotic prescription and histopathologic analysis of the fragments. Together, the examinations performed showed the occurrence of stage 2 BRONJ. Moreover, the antibiotic prescription, discontinuation of oral BP, and surgical procedures ensure that the patient had no more symptoms. Therefore, considering the presented case, we believe that an accurate approach is promising to diagnose and treat stage 2 BRONJ and other associated pathologic findings.

The glandular odontogenic cyst: a case report.

A case of a glandular odontogenic cyst is reported. All clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features are discussed and compared with the descriptions in the literature already published about this new lesion.

Cysts reabsorption in the testis of the bee wax pest Achroia grisella (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) during spermatogenesis

The present paper reports the occurrence of testicular cysts degeneration during spermatogenesis of Achroia grisella, a Lepidoptera with dimorphic spermatogenesis, through ultrastrucutural studies. Signs of cysts degeneration can be detected in the last larval instar but it increases during pupation and early adulthood. The degeneration affects the eupyrene, as well apyrene cysts but it is not always possible to recognize which cysts are degenerating. Some morphological features of cysts degeneration resemble apoptosis.

Omentalisation as a treatment for prostatic cysts and abscesses

Seven dogs with prostatic retention cysts and three with prostatic abscess were referred for prostatic omentalisation and were discharged 72 hours later. Eight dogs had an uneventful recovery while one dog had a minor incontinence for two days. One dog died due to a previous long-term sepsis. The low incidence of post-operative complications and brief hospitalisation period make omentalisation the surgery of choice for the treatment of prostatic cysts and abscess.

Histomorphometric evaluation of a threaded, sandblasted, acid-etched implant retrieved from a human lower jaw: A case report

The purpose of this study was to histomorphometrically evaluate the bone-to-implant contact and bone area around a titanium implant retrieved from a human lower jaw. A screw-shaped titanium implant (sandblasted and acid-etched surface) was removed from a 68-year-old male after having been in function for 40 months because of a fracture of the abutment screw. Following the implant removal, an undecalcified section was obtained. The histomorphometric analysis showed a rate of 75.40% of bone-to-implant contact and 89.30% of bone area filling within the limits of the implant threads. The surrounding bone healed in a well-organized pattern and could not be differentiated from the anginal alveolus. The histologic evidence showed a high degree of osseointegration in a threaded, sandblasted, and acid-etched implant retrieved from a human lower jaw after functional loading for 40 months. Dentigerous cysts in primary dentition: Report of 2 cases

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts associated with the crowns of permanent teeth. They are usually single in occurrence and located in the mandible. The purpose of this case report was to describe the management of 2 dentigerous cysts in children. The treatments instituted were the extraction of the deciduous tooth involved followed by marsupialization in the first case and enucleation in the second one. Both treatments allowed rapid healing of the lesion and eruption of the permanent teeth without the need for orthodontic treatment.

Imprint cytology of osteosarcoma of the jaw: A case report

Introduction. Osteosarcomas are highly malignant bone-forming neoplasms that account for about 20% of all sarcomas. In light of their aggressive behavior, early diagnosis is crucial for determining adequate treatment. Dental professionals may be the first to detect jaw osteosarcomas in their initial stages. The aim of this case report is to draw attention to the possibility of diagnosing this tumor based on clinical, radiographical and cytological characteristics before confirmation by histology. Case presentation. A 24-year-old Afro-Brazilian man presented with swelling and pain on the left side of the mandible in the region of the third molar (tooth 38). Radiography showed a poorly delimited intraosseous lesion with radiolucent and radiopaque areas. The cytological aspects were consistent with the diagnosis of osteosarcoma, which was confirmed by biopsy. Conclusion. Imprint cytology was found to be a reliable, rapid and easy complementary examination. An early diagnosis of osteosarcoma of the jaw is fundamental to the early determination of an adequate treatment. © 2009 Cabral et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.
