The set covering problem is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problemthat arises in applications ranging from crew scheduling in airlines todriver scheduling in public mass transport. In this paper we analyze searchspace characteristics of a widely used set of benchmark instances throughan analysis of the fitness-distance correlation. This analysis shows thatthere exist several classes of set covering instances that have a largelydifferent behavior. For instances with high fitness distance correlation,we propose new ways of generating core problems and analyze the performanceof algorithms exploiting these core problems.

In this paper, we propose two active learning algorithms for semiautomatic definition of training samples in remote sensing image classification. Based on predefined heuristics, the classifier ranks the unlabeled pixels and automatically chooses those that are considered the most valuable for its improvement. Once the pixels have been selected, the analyst labels them manually and the process is iterated. Starting with a small and nonoptimal training set, the model itself builds the optimal set of samples which minimizes the classification error. We have applied the proposed algorithms to a variety of remote sensing data, including very high resolution and hyperspectral images, using support vector machines. Experimental results confirm the consistency of the methods. The required number of training samples can be reduced to 10% using the methods proposed, reaching the same level of accuracy as larger data sets. A comparison with a state-of-the-art active learning method, margin sampling, is provided, highlighting advantages of the methods proposed. The effect of spatial resolution and separability of the classes on the quality of the selection of pixels is also discussed.

The multiscale finite-volume (MSFV) method is designed to reduce the computational cost of elliptic and parabolic problems with highly heterogeneous anisotropic coefficients. The reduction is achieved by splitting the original global problem into a set of local problems (with approximate local boundary conditions) coupled by a coarse global problem. It has been shown recently that the numerical errors in MSFV results can be reduced systematically with an iterative procedure that provides a conservative velocity field after any iteration step. The iterative MSFV (i-MSFV) method can be obtained with an improved (smoothed) multiscale solution to enhance the localization conditions, with a Krylov subspace method [e.g., the generalized-minimal-residual (GMRES) algorithm] preconditioned by the MSFV system, or with a combination of both. In a multiphase-flow system, a balance between accuracy and computational efficiency should be achieved by finding a minimum number of i-MSFV iterations (on pressure), which is necessary to achieve the desired accuracy in the saturation solution. In this work, we extend the i-MSFV method to sequential implicit simulation of time-dependent problems. To control the error of the coupled saturation/pressure system, we analyze the transport error caused by an approximate velocity field. We then propose an error-control strategy on the basis of the residual of the pressure equation. At the beginning of simulation, the pressure solution is iterated until a specified accuracy is achieved. To minimize the number of iterations in a multiphase-flow problem, the solution at the previous timestep is used to improve the localization assumption at the current timestep. Additional iterations are used only when the residual becomes larger than a specified threshold value. Numerical results show that only a few iterations on average are necessary to improve the MSFV results significantly, even for very challenging problems. Therefore, the proposed adaptive strategy yields efficient and accurate simulation of multiphase flow in heterogeneous porous media.

Cortical folding (gyrification) is determined during the first months of life, so that adverse events occurring during this period leave traces that will be identifiable at any age. As recently reviewed by Mangin and colleagues(2), several methods exist to quantify different characteristics of gyrification. For instance, sulcal morphometry can be used to measure shape descriptors such as the depth, length or indices of inter-hemispheric asymmetry(3). These geometrical properties have the advantage of being easy to interpret. However, sulcal morphometry tightly relies on the accurate identification of a given set of sulci and hence provides a fragmented description of gyrification. A more fine-grained quantification of gyrification can be achieved with curvature-based measurements, where smoothed absolute mean curvature is typically computed at thousands of points over the cortical surface(4). The curvature is however not straightforward to comprehend, as it remains unclear if there is any direct relationship between the curvedness and a biologically meaningful correlate such as cortical volume or surface. To address the diverse issues raised by the measurement of cortical folding, we previously developed an algorithm to quantify local gyrification with an exquisite spatial resolution and of simple interpretation. Our method is inspired of the Gyrification Index(5), a method originally used in comparative neuroanatomy to evaluate the cortical folding differences across species. In our implementation, which we name local Gyrification Index (lGI(1)), we measure the amount of cortex buried within the sulcal folds as compared with the amount of visible cortex in circular regions of interest. Given that the cortex grows primarily through radial expansion(6), our method was specifically designed to identify early defects of cortical development. In this article, we detail the computation of local Gyrification Index, which is now freely distributed as a part of the FreeSurfer Software (http://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/, Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital). FreeSurfer provides a set of automated reconstruction tools of the brain's cortical surface from structural MRI data. The cortical surface extracted in the native space of the images with sub-millimeter accuracy is then further used for the creation of an outer surface, which will serve as a basis for the lGI calculation. A circular region of interest is then delineated on the outer surface, and its corresponding region of interest on the cortical surface is identified using a matching algorithm as described in our validation study(1). This process is repeatedly iterated with largely overlapping regions of interest, resulting in cortical maps of gyrification for subsequent statistical comparisons (Fig. 1). Of note, another measurement of local gyrification with a similar inspiration was proposed by Toro and colleagues(7), where the folding index at each point is computed as the ratio of the cortical area contained in a sphere divided by the area of a disc with the same radius. The two implementations differ in that the one by Toro et al. is based on Euclidian distances and thus considers discontinuous patches of cortical area, whereas ours uses a strict geodesic algorithm and include only the continuous patch of cortical area opening at the brain surface in a circular region of interest.

This paper introduces a mixture model based on the beta distribution, without preestablishedmeans and variances, to analyze a large set of Beauty-Contest data obtainedfrom diverse groups of experiments (Bosch-Domenech et al. 2002). This model gives a bettert of the experimental data, and more precision to the hypothesis that a large proportionof individuals follow a common pattern of reasoning, described as iterated best reply (degenerate),than mixture models based on the normal distribution. The analysis shows thatthe means of the distributions across the groups of experiments are pretty stable, while theproportions of choices at dierent levels of reasoning vary across groups.

Olkiluodon ja Loviisan ydinvoimalaitoksilla syntyvä käytetty ydinpolttoaine tullaan kapseloimaan ja loppusijoittamaan Posiva Oy:n kapselointi- ja loppusijoituslaitoksella, joka rakennetaan Olkiluotoon. Käytetyn polttoaineen käsittelyssä on huomioitava säteilytyöhön liittyviä säteilysuojelunäkökohtia. Kapseloinnissa ja loppusijoituksessa käsitellään vaarallisia säteilylähteitä, joista merkittävimmät ovat käytetty ydinpolttoaine ja täyden loppusijoituskapselin röntgentarkastuslaitteisto. Posivan laitosten käyttötoiminnalle muodostetaan tässä diplomityössä säteilysuojelun vaatimusmäärittely. Kapseloinnin ja loppusijoituksen säteilytyövaiheet käsitellään yksitellen säteilysuojelun näkökulmasta. Työvaiheille määritetään tarpeelliset säteilysuojelutoimenpiteet ja työvaiheiden suorittamisen säteilysuojeluvaatimukset. Molempien laitosten valvonta-aluejärjestelyjä ja säteilyolosuhteiden vyöhykejakoa tarkennetaan. Työssä määritetään vyöhyke- ja aluerajoilla vaadittavat säteilysuojelutoiminnot sekä kontaminaationhallinnan laatuvaatimukset. Työssä käsitellään myös operatiivisen säteilysuojelun toimenpiteiden laatuvaatimuksia ja tarvittavaa säteilysuojelun sisäistä ohjeistoa. Työn tuloksena on kapselointi- ja loppusijoituslaitoksen käyttötoiminnan operatiivisten säteilysuojelutoimenpiteiden kuvaus. Kapselointi- ja loppusijoituslaitosten säteilysuojelua toteutetaan käyttövaiheen työnsuunnittelulla, operatiivisilla säteilysuojelutoimilla ja rakenteellisin keinoin. Työntekijöiden säteilyannokset minimoidaan välttämällä oleskelua kohonneen säteilytason alueilla. Kapselin röntgentarkastuslaitteiston käytön säteilyturvallisuus on varmistettava ja laitosten käyttötoiminta ei saa aiheuttaa työntekijöille sisäistä säteilyannosta. Useista työvaiheista ja käyttötoiminnan poikkeustilanteista on tehtävä jatkoanalyyseja työntekijöiden säteilysuojelun näkökulmasta.

Nous présentons dans cette thèse des théorèmes de point fixe pour des contractions multivoques définies sur des espaces métriques, et, sur des espaces de jauges munis d’un graphe. Nous illustrons également les applications de ces résultats à des inclusions intégrales et à la théorie des fractales. Cette thèse est composée de quatre articles qui sont présentés dans quatre chapitres. Dans le chapitre 1, nous établissons des résultats de point fixe pour des fonctions multivoques, appelées G-contractions faibles. Celles-ci envoient des points connexes dans des points connexes et contractent la longueur des chemins. Les ensembles de points fixes sont étudiés. La propriété d’invariance homotopique d’existence d’un point fixe est également établie pour une famille de Gcontractions multivoques faibles. Dans le chapitre 2, nous établissons l’existence de solutions pour des systèmes d’inclusions intégrales de Hammerstein sous des conditions de type de monotonie mixte. L’existence de solutions pour des systèmes d’inclusions différentielles avec conditions initiales ou conditions aux limites périodiques est également obtenue. Nos résultats s’appuient sur nos théorèmes de point fixe pour des G-contractions multivoques faibles établis au chapitre 1. Dans le chapitre 3, nous appliquons ces mêmes résultats de point fixe aux systèmes de fonctions itérées assujettis à un graphe orienté. Plus précisément, nous construisons un espace métrique muni d’un graphe G et une G-contraction appropriés. En utilisant les points fixes de cette G-contraction, nous obtenons plus d’information sur les attracteurs de ces systèmes de fonctions itérées. Dans le chapitre 4, nous considérons des contractions multivoques définies sur un espace de jauges muni d’un graphe. Nous prouvons un résultat de point fixe pour des fonctions multivoques qui envoient des points connexes dans des points connexes et qui satisfont une condition de contraction généralisée. Ensuite, nous étudions des systèmes infinis de fonctions itérées assujettis à un graphe orienté (H-IIFS). Nous donnons des conditions assurant l’existence d’un attracteur unique à un H-IIFS. Enfin, nous appliquons notre résultat de point fixe pour des contractions multivoques définies sur un espace de jauges muni d’un graphe pour obtenir plus d’information sur l’attracteur d’un H-IIFS. Plus précisément, nous construisons un espace de jauges muni d’un graphe G et une G-contraction appropriés tels que ses points fixes sont des sous-attracteurs du H-IIFS.

A novel technique for backscattering reduction for both TE and TM polarisation, employing a metallo-dielectric structure based on Sierpinski carpet fractal geometry, is reported. A reduction in backscattered power of --30 dB is obtained for normal incidence in the X-band for the structure using the third iterated stage of the fractal geometry

Retrieval of similar anatomical structures of brain MR images across patients would help the expert in diagnosis of diseases. In this paper, modified local binary pattern with ternary encoding called modified local ternary pattern (MOD-LTP) is introduced, which is more discriminant and less sensitive to noise in near-uniform regions, to locate slices belonging to the same level from the brain MR image database. The ternary encoding depends on a threshold, which is a user-specified one or calculated locally, based on the variance of the pixel intensities in each window. The variancebased local threshold makes the MOD-LTP more robust to noise and global illumination changes. The retrieval performance is shown to improve by taking region-based moment features of MODLTP and iteratively reweighting the moment features of MOD-LTP based on the user’s feedback. The average rank obtained using iterated and weighted moment features of MOD-LTP with a local variance-based threshold, is one to two times better than rotational invariant LBP (Unay, D., Ekin, A. and Jasinschi, R.S. (2010) Local structure-based region-of-interest retrieval in brain MR images. IEEE Trans. Inf. Technol. Biomed., 14, 897–903.) in retrieving the first 10 relevant images

A recurrent iterated function system (RIFS) is a genaralization of an IFS and provides nonself-affine fractal sets which are closer to natural objects. In general, it's attractor is not a continuous surface in R3. A recurrent fractal interpolation surface (RFIS) is an attractor of RIFS which is a graph of bivariate continuous interpolation function. We introduce a general method of generating recurrent interpolation surface which are at- tractors of RIFSs about any data set on a grid.

In this paper, a fuzzy Markov random field (FMRF) model is used to segment land-objects into free, grass, building, and road regions by fusing remotely, sensed LIDAR data and co-registered color bands, i.e. scanned aerial color (RGB) photo and near infra-red (NIR) photo. An FMRF model is defined as a Markov random field (MRF) model in a fuzzy domain. Three optimization algorithms in the FMRF model, i.e. Lagrange multiplier (LM), iterated conditional mode (ICM), and simulated annealing (SA), are compared with respect to the computational cost and segmentation accuracy. The results have shown that the FMRF model-based ICM algorithm balances the computational cost and segmentation accuracy in land-cover segmentation from LIDAR data and co-registered bands.

Most active-contour methods are based either on maximizing the image contrast under the contour or on minimizing the sum of squared distances between contour and image 'features'. The Marginalized Likelihood Ratio (MLR) contour model uses a contrast-based measure of goodness-of-fit for the contour and thus falls into the first class. The point of departure from previous models consists in marginalizing this contrast measure over unmodelled shape variations. The MLR model naturally leads to the EM Contour algorithm, in which pose optimization is carried out by iterated least-squares, as in feature-based contour methods. The difference with respect to other feature-based algorithms is that the EM Contour algorithm minimizes squared distances from Bayes least-squares (marginalized) estimates of contour locations, rather than from 'strongest features' in the neighborhood of the contour. Within the framework of the MLR model, alternatives to the EM algorithm can also be derived: one of these alternatives is the empirical-information method. Tracking experiments demonstrate the robustness of pose estimates given by the MLR model, and support the theoretical expectation that the EM Contour algorithm is more robust than either feature-based methods or the empirical-information method. This study examines the numerical accuracy, computational cost, and memory requirements of self-consistent field theory (SCFT) calculations when the diffusion equations are solved with various pseudo-spectral methods and the mean field equations are iterated with Anderson mixing. The different methods are tested on the triply-periodic gyroid and spherical phases of a diblock-copolymer melt over a range of intermediate segregations. Anderson mixing is found to be somewhat less effective than when combined with the full-spectral method, but it nevertheless functions admirably well provided that a large number of histories is used. Of the different pseudo-spectral algorithms, the 4th-order one of Ranjan, Qin and Morse performs best, although not quite as efficiently as the full-spectral method.

In this paper we perform an analytical and numerical study of Extreme Value distributions in discrete dynamical systems that have a singular measure. Using the block maxima approach described in Faranda et al. [2011] we show that, numerically, the Extreme Value distribution for these maps can be associated to the Generalised Extreme Value family where the parameters scale with the information dimension. The numerical analysis are performed on a few low dimensional maps. For the middle third Cantor set and the Sierpinskij triangle obtained using Iterated Function Systems, experimental parameters show a very good agreement with the theoretical values. For strange attractors like Lozi and H\`enon maps a slower convergence to the Generalised Extreme Value distribution is observed. Even in presence of large statistics the observed convergence is slower if compared with the maps which have an absolute continuous invariant measure. Nevertheless and within the uncertainty computed range, the results are in good agreement with the theoretical estimates.
