Dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and dimethyl formamide (DMF) complexes of Mn(III) perchlorate have been prepared and their conductivity, magnetic susceptibility and i.r. and electronic spectra studied. The complexes behave as uni-trivalent electrolytes in acetonitrile. Their magnetic moments of 5·1 B.M. show them to be of high spin type. Infra-red spectra show that oxygen is the donor atom in both complexes. The spin allowed electronic transition for d4 system, around 20,000 cm−1, ascribable to the 5Eg → 5T2g transition, suggests an octahedral configuration for these complexes

Dimethyl sulphoxide complexes of lanthanide and yttrium nitrates of the general formula M(DMSO)n(NO3)3 where M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm or Gd; n = 4 and M = Y, Ho or Yb; n = 3 have been isolated and characterized. The i.r. data besides excluding the presence of D3h nitrate, reveal co-ordination through the oxygen atom of the dimethyl sulphoxide. The complexes are monomeric in acetonitrile. Molecular conductance data in acetone, acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulphoxide suggest a co-ordination number of eight for the lighter lanthanides and seven for yttrium and the heavier lanthanides.

The solvolytic disproportionation of non-stoichiometric PrOχ and TbOχ in acid solutions to produce higher oxides has been investigated. Some new non-stoichiometric phases have been reported. A number of interesting features of the non-stoichiometric rare earth oxides have been discussed and the need for a satisfactory structural model has been pointed out.

The interaction of iodine with triphenylamine ,tripheny lphosphine, triphenylarsine and triphenystibine has been investigated by electronic spectroscopy. Transformation of the outer charge-transfer complexes to the inner complexes (quarternary salts) has been examined. The relations of the ionization potentials of the donors with the hvc.t have been discussed and various c.t. parameters have been estimated. Hydrogen bonding of these donors with phenol have been reported.

The preparation of three different types of carbonates of praseodymium, neodymium and terbium has been described. The carbonates have been characterized by potentiometry, chemical analysis, X-ray crystallography, infra-red spectroscopy and by their thermal behaviour. The thermal decomposition of several carbonates has been studied exhaustively under a variety of conditions and the stoicheiometry, thermodynamics and energetics of the reactions at various stages of decomposition have been examined. The stoicheiometry of the oxides obtained as final products of decomposition has been examined.

The formal charge distribution and hence the electric moments of a number of halosilanes and their methyl derivatives have been calculated by the method of Image and Image . The difference between the observed and the calculated values in simple halosilanes is attributed to a change in the hybridization of the terminal halogen atom and in methyl halosilanes to the enhanced electron release of the methyl group towards silicon compared with carbon.

TiO·5DMSO(ClO4)2, ZrO·8DMSO(ClO4)2 and Th·12DMSO(ClO4)4 are prepared by reaction of the respective metal perchlorates with an excess of dimethyl sulphoxide. The last two complexes yield ZrO·6DMSO(ClO4)2 and Th·6DMSO(ClO4)4 on heating around 185°C, while the titanyl complex explodes at 190°C. The extra DMSO molecules in the zirconyl and thorium complexes seem to be held in the lattice. In the parent complexes, the co-ordinated DMSO molecules are bonded by oxygen to the metal atoms while in the DMSO complexes of zirconyl and thorium perchlorates, obtained by heating at 185°C, the bonding involves the sulphur, indicating a change in the bonding during the process of heating.

Dielectric measurements have been made on a number of molecular complexes of beryllium, zinc, cadmium and mercuric halides. The polarizations observed have been interpreted in terms of a tetrahedral configuration for the undissociated beryllium, zinc and cadmium halide complexes. In other cases the observed polarization has been shown to be due to the dissociation of the complex in solution.

QUITE OFTEN, metal ions profoundly affect the condensation of carbonyl compounds with primary amines to form Schiff bases as well as their subsequent reactions[I-4]. Condensation of benzaldehyde with o-phenylenediamine (opd) in glacial acetic acid[5] or in absolute alcohol[6] gives benzimidazole derivative, 1-benzyl-2-phenylbenzimidazole (bpbi). In this reaction, the Schiff base N,N'-dibenzylidene-o-phenylenedianfme (dbpd) has been postulated as an intermediate, which cyclises to give bpbi. It was found that the reaction of opd in presence of copperO1) perchlorate with benzaldehyde gave dbpd complex of copper(l) perchlorate instead of bpbi.

Some physicochemical properties of peroxy titanium compounds are explained by assigning a strained triangular ring structure to the peroxy titanyl group, with a bent and reduced overlap of the O---O bonding orbitals. The stability of the peroxy group is found to depend on the stability of the other ligands. The decreasing order of stability of the peroxy group in the compounds is as: oxalato > meleato > malonato > sulphato > peroxide of titanium.

A detailed study of nickel-monoethanolamine complexes has been made employing potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods. The conditions for the formation of mono as well as polynuclear complexes have been investigated by potentiometric method. Evidence is presented for the formation of the following complexes and their stability constants are determined: NiA2+, Ni22+, Ni32+, NiA42+, NiA52+, NiA22+, Ni2A24+ and Ni3A36+. Combining potentiometric data with the spectrophotometric data, absorption spectra of the pure mononuclear complexes NiA2+ to NiA42+ and NiA2+6 have been computed. The absorption spectrum of NiA2+6 has been discussed on the basis of ligand field and molecular orbital theories. The absorption spectra of intermediate complexes have been interpreted on the basis of average ligand field theory. There has been good agreement between the experimental (10,400 cm-1) value of 10 Dq of NiA2+6 and the calculated value of 10 Dq (11,400 cm-1) on the basis of M.O. theory.

Isonitroso derivatives of copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes of N,N′-ethylenebis(acetylacetoneimine) have been prepared by nitrosation of the respective complexes using nitric oxide as well as nitrite ion. The condensation of isonitrosoacetylacetone in the presence and in the absence of nickel(II) has been investigated. The i.r. and electronic spectra and magnetic moment of the nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes have been studied. The nature of bonding of the ligand to the metal ion is discussed. The complexes have planar structures.
