Winter wheat in England and Wales, 1923 - 1995: What do indices of genetic diversity reveal?

Genealogical data have been used very widely to construct indices with which to examine the contribution of plant breeding programmes to the maintenance and enhancement of genetic resources. In this paper we use such indices to examine changes in the genetic diversity of the winter wheat crop in England and Wales between 1923 and 1995. We find that, except for one period characterized by the dominance of imported varieties, the genetic diversity of the winter wheat crop has been remarkably stable. This agrees with many studies of plant breeding programmes elsewhere. However, underlying the stability of the winter wheat crop is accelerating varietal turnover without any significant diversification of the genetic resources used. Moreover, the changes we observe are more directly attributable to changes in the varietal shares of the area under winter wheat than to the genealogical relationship between the varieties sown. We argue, therefore, that while genealogical indices reflect how well plant breeders have retained and exploited the resources with which they started, these indices suffer from a critical limitation. They do not reflect the proportion of the available range of genetic resources which has been effectively utilized in the breeding programme: complex crosses of a given set of varieties can yield high indices, and yet disguise the loss (or non-utilization) of a large proportion of the available genetic diversity.

New insights on the role of paired membrane structures in coronavirus replication

The replication of coronaviruses, as in other positive-strand RNA viruses, is closely tied to the formation of membrane-bound replicative organelles inside infected cells. The proteins responsible for rearranging cellular membranes to form the organelles are conserved not just among the Coronaviridae family members, but across the order Nidovirales. Taken together, these observations suggest that the coronavirus replicative organelle plays an important role in viral replication, perhaps facilitating the production or protection of viral RNA. However, the exact nature of this role, and the specific contexts under which it is important have not been fully elucidated. Here, we collect and interpret the recent experimental evidence about the role and importance of membrane-bound organelles in coronavirus replication.

Constructing coincident and leading indices of economic activity for the brazilian economy

The first is the reconstruction effort of the series of employment and income to allow the creation of a new coincident index for the Brazilian economic activity. The second is the construction of a coincident index of the economic activity for Brazil, and from it, (re)establish a chronology of recessions in the recent past of the Brazilian economy. The coincident index follows the methodology proposed by TCB and it covers the period 1980:1 to 2007:11. The third is the construction and evaluation of many leading indicators of economic activity for Brazil which fills an important gap in the Brazilian Business Cycles literature.

Effect of tranquilization and anesthesia on high-resolution electrocardiographic indices of dogs in the chronic chagasic myocardiopathy

Avaliou-se o efeito da tranquilização e da anestesia sobre os índices da eletrocardiografia de alta resolução (ECGAR) em cães portadores de doença-de-chagas na fase crônica indeterminada. Foram utilizados oito cães, adultos, sem raça definida, fêmeas, submetidas a seis protocolos (grupos). No grupo 1, os animais estavam sem efeito de tranquilização ou anestesia; no grupo 2, foram tranquilizados com acepromazina; no 3, foram tranquilizados com a associação acepromazina e buprenorfina; no 4, estavam sob anestesia geral inalatória com isofluorano; no 5, sob anestesia geral inalatória com sevofluorano; e no 6, sob anestesia com propofol. Os animais foram submetidos a todos os protocolos, com um período de 15 dias entre cada avaliação. Não se verificou alteração significativa na duração do complexo QRS e do LAS40 entre os grupos, e o RMS40 permaneceu sem alteração significativa. O nível de ruído foi significativamente menor nos grupos 4, 5 e 6 em relação ao grupo 1. A anestesia facilitou o registro da ECGAR sem alterar os índices eletrocardiográficos .
