A novel mechanism is proposed for efficient manipulation of transport forces acting on the droplets during spray pyrolytic deposition of thin films. A ‘‘burst mode’’ technique of spraying is used to adjust the deposition conditions so as to transport the droplets under the new mechanism. Transparent, conducting thin films of undoped tin oxide prepared by this method showed significant improvement in growth rate. The films are found to be of fairly good quality with optical transmission of 82% and sheet resistance of 35 Ω/☒. The films are chemically homogeneous and grow preferentially along 〈200〉 direction.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) and indium doped ZnO (IZO) thin films with different indium compositions were grown by pulsed laser deposition technique on corning glass substrate. The effect of indium concentration on the structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties of the film was studied. The films were oriented along c-direction with wurtzite structure and highly transparent with an average transmittance of more than 80% in the visible wavelength region. The energy band gap was found to decrease with increasing indium concentration. High transparency makes the films useful as optical windows while the high band gap values support the idea that the film could be a good candidate for optoelectronic devices. The value of resistivity observed to decrease initially with doping concentration and subsequently increases. IZO with 1% of indium showed the lowest resistivity of 2.41 x 10(-2) Omega cm and large transmittance in the visible wavelength region. Especially 1% IZO thin film was observed to be a suitable transparent conducting oxide material to potentially replace indium tin oxide. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Indium-tin oxide films have been deposited by reactive electron beam evaporation of ln+Sn alloy both in neutral and ionized oxygen environments. A low-energy ion source (fabricated in-house) has been used. Films deposited with neutral oxygen exhibited very low optical transmittance (5% at 550 nm). Highly transparent (85%) and low-resistivity (5 X 10(-4) Omega cm) films have been deposited in ionized oxygen at ambient substrate temperature. Optical and electrical properties of the films have been studied as a function of deposition parameters. (C) 2002 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Nanocrystalline tin oxide powder was prepared using a solution precipitation technique after adding the surfactant sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT). Powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface area (BET) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The gas sensitivity for surfactant added powders increased for liquid petroleum gas (LPG) as well as compressed natural gas (CNG), due to the decreased particle size and the increased surface area. The LPG gas sensitivity increased several times using phosphorus treated surfactant AOT.

Emf measurements on the galvanic cell Pt, Ta, In + In,O, / Tho,-Y,03 / Cu + C+O, Pt were used to obtain the standard free energy of formation of 1%03fr om 600 to 900°C. Differential thermal analysis was used to detect the decomposition of In2(S0,), under controlled SO2 + O2 + Ar mixtures in thqtemperature range 640-8wC. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the decomposition product was 1%03 without an oxywlphate intermediate. The following equations were obtained for the variation of the standard free-energy change(Jlmole) with temperature:

We incorporated tin oxide nanostructures into the graphene nanosheet matrix and observed that the phase of tin oxide varies with the morphology. The highest discharge capacity and coulumbic efficiency were obtained for SnO phase of nanoplates morphology. Platelet morphology of tin oxide shows more reversible capacity than the nanoparticle (SnO2 phase) tin oxide. The first discharge capacity obtained for SnO@GNS is 1393 and 950 mAh/g for SnO2@GNS electrode at a current density of 23 mu A/cm(2). A stable capacity of about 1022 and 715 mAh/g was achieved at a current rate of 23 mu A/cm(2) after 40 cycles for SnO@GNS and SnO2@GNS anodes, respectively. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. A correlation between gas sensing properties and defect induced Room Temperature Ferromagnetism (RTFM) is demonstrated in non-stoichiometric SnO2 prepared by solution combustion method. The presence of oxygen vacancies (V-O), confirmed by RTFM is identified as the primary factor for enhanced gas sensing effect. The as-prepared SnO2 shows high saturation magnetization of similar to 0.018 emu/g as compared to similar to 0.002 and similar to 0.0005 emu/g in annealed samples and SnO2 prepared by precipitation respectively. The SnO2 prepared by precipitation which is an equilibrium method of synthesis shows lesser defects compared to the combustion product and hence exhibits lesser sensitivity in spite of smaller crystallite size. The study utilizes RTFM as a potential tool to characterize metal oxide gas sensors and recognizes the significance of oxygen vacancies in sensing mechanism over the microstructure. A label-free biosensor has been fabricated using a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and anatase titania (ant-TiO2) nanocomposite, electrophoretically deposited onto an indium tin oxide coated glass substrate. The RGO-ant-TiO2 nanocomposite has been functionalized with protein (horseradish peroxidase) conjugated antibodies for the specific recognition and detection of Vibrio cholerae. The presence of Ab-Vc on the RGO-ant-TiO2 nanocomposite has been confirmed using electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. Electrochemical studies relating to the fabricated Ab-Vc/RGO-ant-TiO2/ITO immunoelectrode have been conducted to investigate the binding kinetics. This immunosensor exhibits improved biosensing properties in the detection of Vibrio cholerae, with a sensitivity of 18.17 x 10(6) F mol(-1) L-1 m(-2) in the detection range of 0.12-5.4 nmol L-1, and a low detection limit of 0.12 nmol L-1. The association (k(a)), dissociation (k(d)) and equilibrium rate constants have been estimated to be 0.07 nM, 0.002 nM and 0.41 nM, respectively. This Ab-Vc/RGO-ant-TiO2/ITO immunoelectrode could be a suitable platform for the development of compact diagnostic devices.

Tin oxide nanoparticles are synthesized using solution combustion technique and tin oxide - carbon composite thick films are fabricated with amorphous carbon as well as carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and porosity measurements show that the as-synthesized nanoparticles are having rutile phase with average crystallite size similar to 7 nm and similar to 95 m(2)/g surface area. The difference between morphologies of the carbon doped and CNT doped SnO2 thick films, are characterized using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The adsorption-desorption kinetics and transient response curves are analyzed using Langmuir isotherm curve fittings and modeled using power law of semiconductor gas sensors. (C) 2015 Author(s).

Tin oxide (SnO2) nanowires are synthesized by Au catalyzed chemical vapor deposition of Sn and C mixture at 900 degrees C by employing a continuous flow of Ar: O-2 (10:1) for an hour. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies indicate that the as-grown SnO2 nanowires are crystalline in nature with tetragonal rutile phase. Electron microscopy studies reveal towards high aspect ratio of nanowires. The field emission studies show that SnO2 nanowires grown on Si substrate exhibit low turn-on field of 1.75 V/mu m (at 0.1 mu A/cm(2)) and long-term emission stability over a period of more than 50 h with a current density of 4 mu A/cm(2) at a constant electric field of 2.25 V/mu m. Hardly any considerable degradation in the emission current is noticed even after 50 h which may be attributed to the high crystallinity of SnO2 nanowires. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Transparent and translucent SnO2 aerogels with high specific surface area (>300m(2)/g) have been prepared by sol-gel process using tetra(n-butoxy)tin(IV) as a starting compound, and supercritical drying technique for solvent extraction. Light scattering measurements reveal that the polymeric cluster size distribution in sol system is gradually broadened during sol-gel transition. SEM images show that the aerogels are made up of the cottonlike oxide agglomerates with a large number of Pores. TEM images show that these aerogels seem to be self-similar at different magnifications. Their pore size distribution is pretty wide ranging, from mesopore to macropore especially for that of translucent aerogel. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Results of the experimental formulation of an antifouling paint incorporating TBTO as toxic pigment are presented in this paper. Of the various resins tested, namely, phenolic, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), epoxy linseed oil with rosin and limed rosin, the paint composition with limed rosin gave the critical leaching rate of TBTO. Acid alkali test showed dissolution of matrix and visible migration of toxin to the surface. Accelerated corrosion tests had not recorded any signs of corrosion in panels painted with or without barrier coat. Raft exposure studies indicated that the new formulation could resist fouling accumulation on painted panels for 9 months.
