OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the anterior-posterior positioning of the upper and lower first molars, and the degree of rotation of the upper first molars in individuals with Class II, division 1, malocclusion. METHODS: Asymmetry I, an accurate device, was used to assess sixty sets of dental casts from 27 females and 33 males, aged between 12 and 21 years old, with bilateral Class II, division 1. The sagittal position of the molars was determined by positioning the casts onto the device, considering the midpalatal suture as a symmetry reference, and then measuring the distance between the mesial marginal ridge of the most distal molar and the mesial marginal ridge of its counterpart. With regard to the degree of rotation of the upper molar, the distance between landmarks on the mesial marginal ridge was measured. Chi-square test with a 5% significance level was used to verify the variation in molars position. Student's t test at 5% significance was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: A great number of lower molars mesially positioned was registered, and the comparison between the right and left sides also demonstrated a higher number of mesially positioned molars on the right side of both arches. The average rotation of the molars was found to be 0.76 mm and 0.93 mm for the right and left sides, respectively. CONCLUSION: No statistically significant difference was detected between the mean values of molars mesialization regardless of the side and arch. Molars rotation, measured in millimeters, represented ¼ of Class II.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of the skeletal maturation in the mandibular and dentoalveolar growth and development during the Class II, division 1, malocclusion correction with Balters bionator. METHODS: Three groups of children with Class II, division 1, malocclusion were evaluated. Two of them were treated for one year with the bionator of Balters appliance in different skeletal ages (Group 1: 6 children, 7 to 8 years old and Group 2: 10 children, 9 to 10 years old) and the other one was followed without treatment (Control Group: 7 children, 8 to 9 years old). Lateral 45 degree cephalometric radiographs were used for the evaluation of the mandibular growth and dentoalveolar development. Tantalum metallic implants were used as fixed and stable references for radiograph superimposition and data acquisition. Student's t test was used in the statistical analysis of the displacement of the points in the condyle, ramus, mandibular base and dental points. Analysis of variance one-fixed criteria was used to evaluate group differences (95% of level of significance). RESULTS: The intragroup evaluation showed that all groups present significant skeletal growth for all points analyzed (1.2 to 3.7 mm), but in an intergroup comparison, the increment of the mandibular growth in the condyle, ramus and mandibular base were not statically different. For the dentoalveolar modifications, the less mature children showed greater labial inclination of the lower incisors (1.86 mm) and the most mature children showed greater first permanent molar extrusion (4.8 mm).

To assess the importance of the leucine residues in positions 262 and 265 of the angiotensin AT, receptor for signaling pathways and receptor expression and regulation, we compared the properties of CHO cells transfected with the wild type or the L262D or L265D receptor point mutants. It was found that the two mutants significantly increased the basal intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) formation in an agonist-independent mode. The morphology transformation of CHO cells was correlated with the increased cAMP formation, since forskolin, a direct activator of adenylate cyclase mimicked this effect on WT-expressing CHO cells. DNA synthesis was found to be inhibited in these cell lines, indicating that cAMP may also have determined the inhibitory effect on cell growth, in addition to the cell transformation from a tumorigenic to a non-tumorigenic phenotype. However a role for an increased Ca2(+) influx induced by the mutants in non-stimulated cells cannot be ruled out since this ion also was shown to cause transformed cells to regain the morphology and growth regulation. A hipertensão arterial sistêmica é uma doença crônica degenerativa de etiologia multifatorial e poligênica, caracterizada pela presença de níveis tensionais elevados, sendo considerada um dos mais importantes fatores de risco para o desenvolvimento das doenças cardiovasculares. Estudos demonstram que cerca de um bilhão de indivíduos apresentam HAS em todo mundo, sendo esta patologia responsável por 7,1 milhões de morte a cada ano. Diversos fatores estão associados ao aumento da incidência da hipertensão arterial, como obesidade, dislipidemias, dieta rica em sal, alterações nos níveis hormonais e sedentarismo. Após o período da menopausa, observa-se significativa elevação nos valores de pressão arterial dessa população, sendo estes similares ou até maiores aos dos homens para esse mesmo período. O sistema renina-angiotensina (SRAA) desempenha importante papel no controle dos sistemas cardiovascular e renal e a angiotensina II é um potente vasoconstritor desse sistema, formado a partir da ação da Enzima Conversora de Angiotensina (ECA). Por outro lado, a recente descoberta da Enzima Conversora de Angiotensina 2 (ECA2), um homólogo da ECA, mudou todo o conceito do SRAA. A ECA 2 é responsável pela formação do peptídeo angiotensina- (1-7) a partir da clivagem do último aminoácido (fenilalanina) da angiotensina II. Recentes evidências têm demonstrado efeitos benéficos da angiotensina-(1-7) para as doenças cardiovasculares através da vasodilatação, efeito anti-arritmogênico, melhora na função contrátil pós-isquemia e inibição da proliferação celular do músculo liso vascular, sendo esses efeitos antagônicos àqueles observados pela angiotensina II. Malocclusion class II-1, is represented by a high prevalence in Brazil, being something common in orthodontic practice. One of the main characteristics of this malocclusion is jaw retrusion, by what many devices of jaw advance are presented in the literature. Being one of them Herbst's device, which is a functional and fixed device created by Emil Herbst (1905) and updated by Hans Pancherz in the decade of 80s.This device is characterized by keeping the jaw advance in a continuous way, while presenting a less active treatment, leading to an immediate aesthetic impact, and the patient cooperation is not required. To improve the anchoring and prevent the collapse of the apparatus was set up last amended version of it by Dr Raveli quoted as Herbst splint. Recent research indicates the use of this device after the peak pubertal growth, creating an appropriate response condylar. The aim of this work is to show the orthodontist a choice of how to use the splint Herbst in Class malocclusions II-1.

Two treatment options are available for adult patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion caused by mandibular deficiency: combined mandibular advancement surgery and orthodontic treatment or mandibular advancement appliance. This study aimed to analyze the effects of two therapeutic modalities of Class II malocclusion treatment with mandibular deficiency. Two distinct individuals with Class II malocclusion division 1 and mandibular deficiency were treated after growth spurt. The first individual used the Herbst appliance as a therapeutic option and the second individual was treated with bilateral sagittal osteotomy. The cephalometric, occlusion and face results were evaluated for both individuals. Correction of Class II malocclusion was observed on both Herbst and surgery patients resulting on a normal occlusal relationship with normal overjet and overbite. Therefore it was concluded that Herbst appliance can be used to treat borderline skeletal Class II in adult patients.

In this study, it is proposed to evaluate the anteroposterior position of mandible in children with Angle Class II, division 1 malocclusions, to compare two different methods of evaluating the jaw position and verifying the correlation between these two methods. We selected 26 Brazilian children with vertical growth pattern and Angle Class II, division 1 malocclusions, aged between 7 years and 8 months to 9 years and 6 months. The evaluation of the anteroposterior position of the mandible was performed with the use of lateral cephalograms by cephalometric angular SNB and linear Pog-Nperp. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that the SNB identified more children with mandibular retrusion than Pog-Nperp; the increased tip of the SN plane may have decreased values of SNB; Pog-Nperp minimizes the possibility of error in the anteroposterior position of the mandible, since it eliminates the variable tip of the anterior skull base (SN plane); none of the cephalometric measurements used are able to eliminate the influence of the nasion point in the anterior-posterior and vertical position; correlation between SNB and Pog-Nperp is very low.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the facial profile changes due to natural growth and induced by Herbst appliance and Bionator in the treatment of Class II, division 1 malocclusion. In order to do that, we used a sample of 90 lateral radiographs of 45 individuals in pre-pubertal stage, divided up in two experimental groups and one control. The first group, composed of 15 brazilian individuals, with initial mean age of 9.4 years, was treated with the Herbst appliance for a period of seven months. The second experimental group consisting of 15 brazilian individuals, initial mean age of 9.9 years has gone through bionator therapy for an average period of 21 months. The control group of 15 individuals, who were not treated orthodontically, comes up from the Burlington Growth Centre, University of Toronto, Canada. The intragroup comparison was performed using the Student t test and intergroup comparisons by ANOVA complemented by the Bonferroni test. The results have shown that only the group treated with the Herbst appliance presented significant changes in facial profile with improvement of its convexity and lower lip protrusion.
