The relationship between the dielectric properties (dielectric constant, ε′, and loss factor, ε; activation energy, E a) and the ratio of epoxy resin (OG) to hardener of the epoxy resin thermosetting polymers was investigated. The amplitude of the ε″ peak decreases with increasing OG content until about 73 wt.% and slightly increases at higher OG content. The temperature of the position of the ε″ peak increases with the increasing of OG content, reaching maximum values for compositions in the range of 67 and 73 wt.%, and then it decreases sharply at higher OG content. The activation energy obtained from dielectric relaxation increased with increasing wt.% OG up to around 70 wt.%. Further increase in concentration of OG up to 83 wt.% reduced E a. The curves of tensile modulus and fracture toughness mechanical properties as a function of OG content presented a similar behavior. ©2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

The relationship between the heat of polymerization (ΔH) and activation energy (Ea) parameters, obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the ratio of epoxy resin to hardener of the thermosetting materials based on an organic-inorganic hybrid epoxy resin (OG) was investigated. Activation energy (Ea) and heat of polymerization (ΔH) increased with an increasing OG content, up to 70 wt%. Further increase in OG content to 80wt% reduced Ea and ΔH. Dynamic mechanical analysis indicates that the maximum cross-link density is obtained at 83 wt% OG, whereas fracture toughness and tensile modulus mechanical properties are maximized at 70 wt% OG. ©2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

Objective. To evaluate the degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (FS) and Knoop microhardness (KHN) of direct and indirect composite resins polymerized with different curing systems. Materials and methods. Specimens of direct (Z250, 3M/Espe) and indirect (Sinfony, 3M/Espe) restorative materials were made and polymerized using two light curing units: XL2500 (3M/Espe) and Visio system (3M/Espe). Absorption spectra of both composites were obtained on a FTIR spectrometer in order to calculate the DC. FS was evaluated in a universal testing machine and surface microhardness was performed in a microhardness tester (50gf/15s). DC, FS and KHN data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results. Z250 showed higher DC, FS and KHN compared with Sinfony when the polymerization was carried out with XL2500 (p < 0.05). However, there is no statistical difference in DC between the materials when Visio was used (p > 0.05). Visio showed higher DC and KHN for Z250 and Sinfony than the values obtained using XL2500 light curing (p < 0.05). For FS, no significant difference between curing units was found (p > 0.05). Conclusion. Even though the Visio system could increase DC and KHN for some direct and indirect composites, compared with the conventional halogen curing unit, a high number of monomers did not undergo conversion during the polymerization. © 2013 Informa Healthcare.

This paper summarizes the results of an experimental research to assess the residual mechanical properties of an ordinary concrete after fire. It was studied the influence of the cooling process, the maximum temperature that the concrete was subjected to and the loading level on the residual mechanical properties of calcareous and granite aggregate concretes. The properties studied were the residual compressive, tensile, splitting and flexural strengths and modulus of elasticity. Four levels of temperature; 20, 300, 500 and 700ºC; two loading levels (0.3f and 0.7fcd) and two cooling processes (cooling in the air and by water jet) were tested. The high temperatures attained and the sudden cooling down process on the concrete showed a negative effect on its residual mechanical properties. This effect was more notorious on the residual compression strength than in the other mechanical properties

In recent years, many tidal turbine projects have been developed using composites blades. Tidal turbine blades are subject to ocean forces and sea water aggressions, and the reliability of these components is crucial to the profitability of ocean energy recovery systems. The majority of tidal turbine developers have preferred carbon/epoxy blades, so there is a need to understand how prolonged immersion in the ocean affects these composites. In this study the long term behaviour of different carbon/epoxy composites has been studied using accelerated ageing tests. A significant reduction of composite strengths has been observed after saturation of water in the material. For longer immersions only small further changes in these properties occur. No significant changes have been observed for moduli nor for composite toughness. The effect of sea water ageing on damage thresholds and kinetics has been studied and modelled. After saturation, the damage threshold is modified while kinetics of damage development remain the same.

New nanocomposites based on polyethylene have been prepared by in situ polymerization of ethylene in presence of mesoporous MCM-41. The polymerization reactions were performed using a zirconocene catalyst either under homogenous conditions or supported onto mesoporous MCM-41 particles, which are synthesized and decorated post-synthesis with two silanes before polymerization in order to promote an enhanced interfacial adhesion. The existence of polyethylene chains able to crystallize within the mesoporous channels in the resulting nanocomposites is figured out from the small endothermic process, located at around 80 C, on heating calorimetric experiments, in addition to the main melting endotherm. These results indicate that polyethylene macrochains can grow up during polymerization either outside or inside the MCM-41 channels, these keeping their regular hexagonal arrangements. Mechanical response is observed to be dependent on the content in mesoporous MCM-41 and on the crystalline features of polyethylene. Accordingly, stiffness increases and deformability decreases in the nanocomposites as much as MCM-41 content is enlarged and polyethylene amount within channels is raised. Ultimate mechanical performance improves with MCM-41 incorporation without varying the final processing temperature.

In this work results for the flexural strength and the thermal properties of interpenetrated graphite preforms infiltrated with Al-12wt%Si are discussed and compared to those for packed graphite particles. To make this comparison relevant, graphite particles of four sizes in the range 15–124 μm, were obtained by grinding the graphite preform. Effects of the pressure applied to infiltrate the liquid alloy on composite properties were investigated. In spite of the largely different reinforcement volume fractions (90% in volume in the preform and around 50% in particle compacts) most properties are similar. Only the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion is 50% smaller in the preform composites. Thermal conductivity of the preform composites (slightly below 100 W/m K), may be increased by reducing the graphite content, alloying, or increasing the infiltration pressure. The strength of particle composites follows Griffith criterion if the defect size is identified with the particle diameter. On the other hand, the composites strength remains increasing up to unusually high values of the infiltration pressure. This is consistent with the drainage curves measured in this work. Mg and Ti additions are those that produce the most significant improvements in performance. Although extensive development work remains to be done, it may be concluded that both mechanical and thermal properties make these materials suitable for the fabrication of piston engines.

Electrospinning is the most common and industrially scalable technique for the production of polymeric nanofibers. Currently, nanocomposites are drawing much interest for their excellent properties in terms of flexibility, electrical conductivity and high surface area, which enhances the interaction with the surrounding environment. The objective of this thesis was the optimization of different electrospinning setups for the production of nanostructured polymeric composites using graphene-related materials as nanofillers. Such composites were obtained using different polymers as matrix (polyamide 6, polyinylidene fluoride and polylactic acid) that were selected and combined with the appropriate reinforcements based on their properties and their interest for specific applications. Moreover, this study highlighted the possibility to tune the morphology and size of the produced nanofibers by the addition of appropriate nanofillers even in low amounts. The addition of only 0.5% of GO allowed the production of smooth nanofibers with diameters up to 75% thinner (in the case of PLA) than the ones obtained from the pristine polymer. PVdF was charged with GO to produce triboelectric materials that can be exploited in a wearable nanogenerator for the conversion of human motion energy in electrical energy. The addition of GO improved the open-circuit voltage and power-output of a generator prototype by 3.5 times. Electrospun PA6 membranes were coated with rGO using a simple two-step technique to produce conductive textiles for wearable electronic applications. The sheet resistance of the produced materials was measured in approximately 500 Ω/sq and their resistance to washing and bending was successfully tested. These materials could be exploited as strain sensors or heating elements in smart textiles. PLA was co-electrospun with GO and cellulose nanofibers to produce high-surface area and porosity mats that could be exploited for the production of functionalized highly selective adsorption membranes with low pressure drops.

The influence of Al(2)O(3) addition and sintering parameters on the mechanical properties and cytotoxicity of tetragonal ZrO(2)-3 mol% Y(2)O(3) ceramics was evaluated. Samples containing 0, 10, 20 and 30 wt.% of Al(2)O(3) particles were prepared by cold uniaxial pressing (80 MPa) and sintered in air at 1500, 1550 and 1600 degrees C for 120 min. The effects of the sintering conditions on the microstructure were analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Hardness and fracture toughness were determined by the Vickers indentation method and the mechanical resistance by four-point bending tests. As a preliminary biological evaluation, ""in vitro"" cytotoxicity tests were realized to determine the cytotoxic level of the ZrO(2)-Al(2)O(3) composites, using the neutral red uptake method with NCTC clones L929 from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) bank. Fully dense ceramic materials were obtained with a hardness ranging between 1340 HV and 1585 HV, depending on the amount of Al(2)O(3) in the ZrO(2) matrix. On the other hand, no significant influence of the Al(2)O(3) addition on fracture toughness was observed, exhibiting values near 8 MPa m(1/2) for all compositions and sintering conditions studied. The non-cytotoxic behavior, the elevated fracture toughness, the good bending strength (sigma(f) = 690 MPa) and the elevated Weibull`s modulus (m = 11) exhibited by the material, show that these ceramic composites are highly suitable biomaterials for dental implant applications.
