These longitudinal studies focused on investigating young adults during transition into a new educational environment. The aims were to examine: (1) what kinds of achievement and social strategies young adults deploy, (2) whether the deployment of these strategies predicts people's success in their studies, their life events, their peer relationships, and their well-being, (3) whether young adults' success in dealing with educational transition (e.g. success in studies, life events, peer relationships and well-being) predict changes in their strategies and well-being, and (4) the associations between young adults' social strategies, interpersonal behaviour, person perception, and their peer relationships and satisfaction with them. The participants were students from Helsinki university and from two vocational institutes (the numbers ranging between 92 and 303). The results revealed that achievement and social strategies contributed to individuals' success in dealing with both the academic and interpersonal challenges of a new environment. Social strategies were also associated with online interpersonal behaviour and person perception, which mediated their impact on peer relationships. Achievement and social strategies changed as a result of environmental feedback. However, they also showed high stability, forming reciprocal and cumulative associations with the feedback the individuals received about their success in dealing with educational transition: the use of functional strategies, such as optimistic, defensive-pessimistic and planning-oriented strategies, increased their success, which in turn enhanced their well-being and further deployment of functional strategies. The opposite was true in the case of dysfunctional strategies, such as self-handicapping and avoidance. Key words : Achievement strategies, social strategies, transition, young adults, life events, sociometric status, social behaviour, person perception, well-being.

Viable stuffed fullerenelike boron carbide nanoclusters, C50B34, C48B36-2, and their isomers based on an icosahedral B-84 fragment of elemental beta-rhombohedral boron have been investigated using density functional theory calculations. The structure and the stability of these clusters are rationalized using the polyhedral skeletal electron counting and ring-cap orbital overlap compatibility rules. The curvature of the fullerene was found to play a vital role in achieving the most stable isomer C50B34(3B). The large highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gaps, three dimensional aromaticity, and electron detachment energies support their high stability. Further, the IR and Raman active modes were recognized.

Nanoporous carbon (NPC) materials with high specific surface area have attracted considerable attention for electrochemical energy storage applications. In the present work, we have designed novel symmetric supercapacitors based on NPC by direct carbonization of Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) without using an additional precursor. By controlling the reaction conditions in the present study, we synthesized NPC with two different particle sizes. The effects of particle size and mass loadings on supercapacitor performance have been carefully evaluated. Our NPC materials exhibit excellent electrochemical performance with a maximum specific capacitance of 251 F g-1 in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte. The symmetric supercapacitor studies show that these efficient electrodes have good capacitance, high stability, and good rate capability.

Determining the sequence of amino acid residues in a heteropolymer chain of a protein with a given conformation is a discrete combinatorial problem that is not generally amenable for gradient-based continuous optimization algorithms. In this paper we present a new approach to this problem using continuous models. In this modeling, continuous "state functions" are proposed to designate the type of each residue in the chain. Such a continuous model helps define a continuous sequence space in which a chosen criterion is optimized to find the most appropriate sequence. Searching a continuous sequence space using a deterministic optimization algorithm makes it possible to find the optimal sequences with much less computation than many other approaches. The computational efficiency of this method is further improved by combining it with a graph spectral method, which explicitly takes into account the topology of the desired conformation and also helps make the combined method more robust. The continuous modeling used here appears to have additional advantages in mimicking the folding pathways and in creating the energy landscapes that help find sequences with high stability and kinetic accessibility. To illustrate the new approach, a widely used simplifying assumption is made by considering only two types of residues: hydrophobic (H) and polar (P). Self-avoiding compact lattice models are used to validate the method with known results in the literature and data that can be practically obtained by exhaustive enumeration on a desktop computer. We also present examples of sequence design for the HP models of some real proteins, which are solved in less than five minutes on a single-processor desktop computer Some open issues and future extensions are noted.

In the framework of a project aimed at developing a reliable hydrogen generator for mobile polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), particular emphasis has been addressed to the analysis of catalysts able to assure high activity and stability in transient operations (frequent start-up and shut-down cycles). In this paper, the catalytic performance of 1 at.% Pt/ceria samples prepared by coprecipitation, impregnation and combustion, has been evaluated in the partial oxidation of methane. Methane conversion and hydrogen selectivity of 96 and 99%, respectively, associated with high stability during 100h of reaction under operative conditions (start-up and shut-down cycles), have been obtained. Beginning with the ‘frog-leg experiment’ by Galvani (1786), followed by the demonstrations of Volta pile by Volta (1792) and lead-acid accumulator by Plante´ (1859), several battery chemistries have been developed and realized commercially. The development of lithium-ion rechargeable battery in the early 1990s is a breakthrough in the science and technology of batteries. Owing to its high energy density and high operating voltage, the Li-ion battery has become the battery of choice for various portable applications such as note-book computers, cellular telephones, camcorders, etc. Huge efforts are underway in succeeding the development of large size batteries for electric vehicle applications. The origin of lithium-ion battery lies in the discovery that Li+-ions can reversibly be intercalated into/de-intercalated from the Van der Walls gap between graphene sheets of carbon materials at a potential close to the Li/Li+ electrode. By employing carbon as the negative electrode material in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, the problems associated with metallic lithium in rechargeable lithium batteries have been mitigated. Complimentary investigations on intercalation compounds based on transition metals have resulted in establishing LiCoO2 as the promising cathode material. By employing carbon and LiCoO2, respectively, as the negative and positive electrodes in a non-aqueous lithium-salt electrolyte,a Li-ion cell with a voltage value of about 3.5 V has resulted.Subsequent to commercialization of Li-ion batteries, a number of research activities concerning various aspects of the battery components began in several laboratories across the globe. Regarding the positive electrode materials, research priorities have been to develop different kinds of active materials concerning various aspects such as safety, high capacity, low cost, high stability with long cycle-life, environmental compatibility, understanding relationships between crystallographic and electrochemical properties. The present review discusses the published literature on different positive electrode materials of Li-ion batteries, with a focus on the effect of particle size on electrochemical performance.

As Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) are nearing the acceptable performance level for automotive and stationary applications, the focus on the research is shifting more and more toward enhancing their durability that still remains a major concern in their commercial acceptability. Hydrous ruthenium oxide (RuO2) is a promising material for pseudocapacitors due to its high stability, high specific-capacitance and rapid faradaic-reaction. Incorporation of carbon-supported RuO2 (RuO2/C) to platinum (Pt) is found to ameliorate both stability and catalytic activity of fuel cell cathodes that exhibit higher performance and durability in relation to Pt/C cathodes as evidenced by cell polarization, impedance and cyclic voltammetry data. The degradation in performance of Pt-RuO2/C cathodes is found to be only similar to 8% after 10000 accelerated stress test (AST) cycles as against similar to 60% for Pt/C cathodes after 7000 AST cycles under similar conditions. These data are in conformity with the Electrochemical Surface Area and impedance results. Interestingly, Pt-RuO2/C cathodes can withstand more than 10000 AST cycles with only a nominal loss in their performance. Studies on catalytic electrodes with X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and cross-sectional field-emission scanning electron microscopy reflect that incorporation of RuO2 to Pt helps mitigating aggregation of Pt particles and improves its stability during long-term operation of PEFCs. Nanodendritic Pd is electrodeposited on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coated carbon paper electrode. Electrodeposited Pd is non-dendritic in the absence of PEDOT. The electrooxidation of C-3-aliphatic alcohols, namely, propanol (PA), 1,2- propanediol (1, 2-PD), 1, 3-propanediol (1, 3-PD), and glycerol (GL) is studied in 1.0 M NaOH. The catalytic activity of nanodendritic Pd is greater than that of non-dendritic Pd for oxidation of the four alcohols molecules. Among those molecules the oxidation rate increases as: PA< 1, 2-PD < 1, 3-PD < GL. The cyclic voltammetric oxidation current peak appearing in the reverse direction of the sweep is greatly influenced by the nature of alcohol. The reduction of oxide film on Pd surface is attributed to affect the magnitude of backward peak current density. The amperometry and repeated cyclic voltammetry data suggest a high stability of nanodendritic Pd in alkaline medium. Glycerol is expected to be an appropriate alcohol for application as a fuel in alkaline fuel cells at nanodendritic electrodeposited Pd.

In the quest for more efficient photoanodes in the photoelectrochemical oxidation processes for organic pollutant degradation and mineralisation in water treatment, we present the synthesis, characterisation and photoelectrochemical application of expanded graphite-TiO2 composite (EG-TiO2) prepared using the sol-gel method with organically modified silicate. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analyser, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed for the characterisation of the composites. The applicability of the EG-TiO2 as photoanode material was investigated by the photoelectrochemical degradation of p-nitrophenol as a target pollutant in a 0.1 M Na2SO4 (pH 7) solution at a current density of 5 mA cm(-2). After optimising the TiO2 loading, initial p-nitrophenol concentration, pH and current density, a removal efficiency of 62% with an apparent kinetic rate constant of 10.4 x 10(-3) min(-1) was obtained for the photoelectrochemical process as compared to electrochemical oxidation and photolysis, where removal efficiencies of 6% and 24% were obtained respectively after 90 min. Furthermore, the EG-TiO2 electrode was able to withstand high current density due to its high stability. The EG-TiO2 electrode was also used to degrade 0.3 x 10(-4) M methylene blue and 0.1 x 10(-4) M Eosin Yellowish, leading to 94% and 47% removal efficiency within 120 reaction time. This confirms the suitability of the EG-TiO2 electrode to degrade other organic pollutants.

The generation of renewable energy through photocatalysis is an attractive option to utilize the abundantly available solar radiation for a sustainable future. Photocatalysis refers to charge-carrier, i.e. electron and hole, mediated reactions occurring on a semiconductor surface in presence of ultraviolet or visible light radiation. Photocatalysis is a well established advanced oxidation technique for the decontamination of toxic organic pollutants to CO2 and H2O. However, the generation of energy in the form of hydrogen, hydrocarbon fuels and electricity via photocatalysis is an upcoming field with great many technical challenges towards practical implementation. This review will describe the fundamental reaction mechanism of (i) photocatalytic water splitting, (ii) photocatalytic H-2 generation in presence of different sacrificial agents, (iii) H-2 and electricity generation in a photofuel cell, (iv) photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons and useful chemicals, and (v) photocatalytic water-gas shift reaction. A historic and recent perspective of the above conversion techniques, especially with regard to the development of TiO2-based and non-TiO2 materials is provided. The activity of different materials for the above reactions based on quantifiers like reaction rate, quantum yield and incident-photon-to-current efficiency is compared, and key design considerations of the ``best'' photocatalyst or photoelectrode is outlined. An overall assessment of the research area indicates that the presently achieved quantum efficiencies for the above reactions are rather moderate in the visible region, and the goal is to develop a catalyst that absorbs visible radiation, provides good charge-carrier separation, and exhibits high stability for long periods of usage.

Nanosized fullerene solvates have attracted widespread research attention due to recent interesting discoveries. A particular type of solvate is limited to a fixed number of solvents and designing new solvates within the same family is a fundamental challenge. Here we demonstrate that the hexagonal closed packed (HCP) phase of C-60 solvates, formed with m-xylene, can also be stabilized using toluene. Contrary to the notion on their instability, these can be stabilized from minutes up to months by tuning the occupancy of solvent molecules. Due to high stability, we could record their absorption edge, and measure excitonic life-time, which has not been reported for any C-60 solvate. Despite being solid, absorbance spectrum of the solvates is similar in appearance to that of C-60 in solution. A new absorption band appears at 673 nm. The fluorescence lifetime at 760 nm is similar to 1.2 ns, suggesting an excited state unaffected by solvent-C-60 interaction. Finally, we utilized the unstable set of HCP solvates to exchange with a second solvent by a topotactic exchange mechanism, which rendered near permanent stability to the otherwise few minutes stable solvates. This is also the first example of topotactic exchange in supramolecular crystal, which is widely known in ionic solids. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Although semiconductor quantum dots are promising materials for displays and lighting due to their tunable emissions, these materials also suffer from the serious disadvantage of self-absorption of emitted light. The reabsorption of emitted light is a serious loss mechanism in practical situations because most phosphors exhibit subunity quantum yields. Manganese-based phosphors that also exhibit high stability and quantum efficiency do not suffer from this problem but in turn lack emission tunability, seriously affecting their practical utility. Here, we present a class of manganese-doped quantum dot materials, where strain is used to tune the wavelength of the dopant emission, extending the otherwise limited emission tunability over the yellow-orange range for manganese ions to almost the entire visible spectrum covering all colors from blue to red. These new materials thus combine the advantages of both quantum dots and conventional doped phosphors, thereby opening new possibilities for a wide range of applications in the future.

Co3O4 catalysts were prepared by combustion synthesis using different fuels glycine (G), ODH (O) and urea (U). Morphological changes of the materials were observed by using different fuels. The prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, BET and DRIFTS analysis. All compounds showed 100% conversion of CO below 175C. The prepared catalysts exhibited very high stability and conversions did not decrease even after 50 h of continuous operation. The oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of materials was measured by H-2-TPR analysis. Co3O4-O is having high OSC among the synthesized catalysts. The activation energies of these catalysts were found to be in the range of 42.3-64.8 kJ mol(-1). With DRIFTS analysis, the surface carbonates, superoxide anions, adsorbed CO, O-2 species on the catalyst surface were found and this information was used to develop a detailed reaction pathway. A kinetic model was developed with the help of proposed mechanism and used to fit the data. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
