La estética de lo bello y la exaltación de la cultura popular

Alegato en favor del concepto clásico de belleza y en contra de la concepción postmodernista de que todo puede ser arte y todos artistas. Se trata de rescatar la concepción de estética contenida en las obras de la Escuela de Frankfurt, especialmente de Theodor W. Adorno y Herbert Marcuse: el arte como lealtad a la promesa de felicidad. Se rescata la función crítica y anticipativa del gran arte y se pone en cuestión el carácter presumiblemente progresista y democrático del arte contemporáneo. Las élites actuales, legitimadas democráticamente, comparten las mismas inclinaciones estéticas de las masas, pero ejerciendo una función manipulativa en la configuración de la vida cotidiana.

Polemos and Paideia: On the Weaponization of the School in Late Capitalism

A popular refrain in the politics of American education, often buttressed by a steady stream of studies, contends that ‘we are falling behind’ students from other countries. Sometimes this decline is specified in terms of discipline, but the general premise is that American students lag behind their foreign counterparts, with special dread attached to the notion of falling behind adversaries such as China. The failure to rectify our educational inadequacies apparently portends a genuine crisis, the loss of global dominance. The articulation of such fears is particularly instructive in discerning the political role of education in late capitalism, its conceptualization and uses within the context of politics. How do the fears of falling behind speak to the political role of education in late capitalism? I draw upon the ideas of the Herbert Marcuse and his Marxist intervention into Freudian psychoanalysis. Using Marcuse’s framework, I argue that in late capitalism the political role of education, formerly understood to serve life affirming value, has been reoriented to further the aims of the death drive. The fears of falling behind, and the policies that have followed, are symptomatic of a disposition toward education that has reconfigured the school as a means of conquest, subjugation, and war.

Correlaciones entre la resolución de problemas matemáticos y el enfoque socio-crítico en el contexto de la institución educativa María de los Ángeles Cano Márquez

El presente trabajo busca contribuir a que los docentes de matemáticas, de la institución María de los Ángeles Cano Márquez, accedan a una herramienta teórica y metodológica para ser usada en la resolución de problemas matemáticos. El tipo de investigación en la que se inscribe este trabajo es cualitativo y está basado en el estudio de casos; su propósito es recoger antecedentes del enfoque socio-crítico y de la resolución de problemas matemáticos así como describir su estado actual, con la finalidad de observar cómo el enfoque socio-crítico y la resolución de problemas se complementan y aportan a los maestros, en la formación de educandos reflexivos y críticos que aspiren a impactar positivamente su entorno. En tal sentido, se aplicaron unas encuestas a los docentes de matemáticas de secundaria y de los grados 4° y 5° de primaria, así como a estudiantes de 7° y 9° grado, para luego realizar un análisis comparativo de los resultados obtenidos en ellas. Para el desarrollo del presente trabajo, se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica de elementos que aporta la teoría crítica de la educación, en especial la escuela de Frankfurt con sus representantes Herbert Marcuse y Jürgen Habermas; luego se abordó la lectura de pensadores críticos como Paulo Freire, quienes oficiaron como referentes para un valioso aporte en esta tarea. Para el mismo efecto se han tomado elementos de las propuestas de las teorías de la educación matemática crítica. La información obtenida a partir de la aplicación de los instrumentos acá usados, permitió indagar sobre el nivel de apropiación de las diferentes categorías: el desarrollo del pensamiento autónomo, el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico y reflexivo, el aprendizaje cooperativo, el desarrollo de la autoestima y la personalidad o el desarrollo del pensamiento complejo; ejercicio que propició la profundización en las teorías acerca de las mismas y sus posibles formas de aplicación. Finalmente, se encontraron puntos de convergencia entre la resolución de problemas y el enfoque socio-crítico, objetivo central del presente trabajo.

As a biographical documentary concept develops, its intention and its form are impacted and may be transformed by market demands. The documentary idea about the life of Xavier Herbert has been in development through a number of iterations within the shifting landscape of the Australian documentary industry from the mid- 1990s to 2009. This study is, on the one hand, an endeavour to find a workable way to express and practise the multi-layered complexity of creative work, a long-form documentary script on Herbert, an Australian literary icon. On the other hand, this thesis represents a cumulative research exercise, whereby my own experiences in the documentary industry in Queensland, Australia and overseas are analysed in an effort to enlighten the broader documentary community about such a complex, even labyrinthine, process.

Extent of dense native woodland and exotic weed infestation in the extensive grazing lands of the Upper Herbert and Upper Burdekin River Catchments of far north Queensland: results of a producer survey

The Mt Garnet Landcare Group commissioned a survey of landholders within the Upper Herbert and Upper Burdekin River Catchments to assess the density of native woodlands and to gauge the extent of exotic weed infestation. Twenty-four of 49 landholders responded, representing an area of nearly 500 000 ha or 47% of the total area. Dense native woodland covers 24% (>117 000 ha) of the area surveyed, while a further 30% (140 000 ha) supports moderately dense stands. The dense stands are largely confined to the highly fertile alluvial soils (26% dense woodland) and the lower fertility sandy-surfaced soils (33% or >96 000 ha). Moderate and dense infestations of exotic weeds, principally Lantana camara, occur on 54% (20 000 ha) of alluvial soils and on 13% of sandy-surfaced soils (39 000 ha), where praxelis (Praxelis clematidia) is the major weed. Basaltic soils have low levels of both dense woodland and exotic weed infestation. Some implications of the results are discussed.

Grower group case study on new farming practices in the Herbert region, Australia

Growers working together have proven to be a successful method for improving the utilization of farm resources and accelerating the adoption of the Sugar Yield Decline Joint Venture principles (SYDJV). The Pinnacle Precision Farming Group was formed in 2004 with the aim to bring together the ideas, knowledge and resources of growers in the Herbert region. Along with their common interest in controlled traffic, minimal tillage and crop rotations, the grower group utilize a farm machinery contractor to provide some of their major farming operations. This paper provides an insight into the changes made by the Pinnacle Precision Farming Group and their journey to adopt the new farming system practices. This paper also details the changes made by the group machinery contractor and a comparison of the old and new farming systems used by a group member. A focus point of the document is the impact of the new farming system on the economic, social and environmental components of the farming business. Analysis of the new farming system with a legume crop rotation revealed an increase in the farm gross margin by AU$22 024 and, in addition, a reduction in tractor operation time by 38% across the whole farm. This represents a return on marginal capital of 14.68 times the original capital outlay required by the group member. Using the new farming system without a legume crop will still improve the group members whole of farm gross margin by AU$6 839 and reduce tractor operation time by 43% across the whole farm. The Pinnacle Precision Farming group recognize the need to continually improve their farming businesses and believe that the new farming system principles are critical for the long term viability of the industry.
