Hopwood Hall College: Touchscreen technology overtakes interactive whiteboards as interactive teaching tool of choice

Hopwood Hall is adopting the use of touch screen technology and gradually replacing its interactive whiteboards to improve access to interactive learning. The touch screen monitors connected to LCD TV’s provide a cheaper classroom build with technology that’s more user-friendly and better suited to classroom delivery. Until now, interactive boards had been the mainstay of classrooms but they created teaching barriers for staff including the additional software to learn and master. They are also expensive and often have usability issues with 'pens' not working or having a delay when used as the mouse tool.

Hall coefficient and resistivity of an amorphous palladium-silicon alloy

The Hall coefficient and resistance in several specimens of an amorphous metallic alloy containing 80 at.% palladium and 20 at.% silicon have been investigated at temperatures between 4.2°K and room temperature. An ideal limiting behavior of these transport coefficients was analyzed on the basis of the nearly free electron model to yield a carrier density of 9 x 10²² cm.^-3, or about 1.7 electrons per palladium atom, and a mean free path of about 9Å which is almost constant with temperature. The deviations of the individual specimens from this ideal behavior, which were small but noticeable in the relative resistivity and much greater in the Hall coefficient, can be explained by invoking disk-shaped crystalline regions with low resistivity and a positive Hall coefficient. A detailed calculation shows how a volume fraction of such crystalline material too small to be noticed in X-ray diffraction could have a significant effect on the resistivity and a much greater effect on the Hall coefficient.

Coulomb drag and tunneling studies in quantum Hall bilayers

The bilayer quantum Hall state at total filling factor ν_T=1, where the total electron density matches the degeneracy of the lowest Landau level, is a prominent example of Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons. A macroscopically ordered state is realized where an electron in one layer is tightly bound to a "hole" in the other layer. If exciton transport were the only bulk transportmechanism, a current driven in one layer would spontaneously generate a current of equal magnitude and opposite sign in the other layer. The Corbino Coulomb drag measurements presented in this thesis demonstrate precisely this phenomenon.

Excitonic superfluidity has been long sought in the ν_T=1 state. The tunneling between the two electron gas layers exihibit a dc Josephson-like effect. A simple model of an overdamped voltage biased Josephson junction is in reasonable agreement with the observed tunneling I-V. At small tunneling biases, it exhibits a tunneling "supercurrent". The dissipation is carefully studied in this tunneling "supercurrent" and found to remain small but finite.

Sophia Jobim: trajetória e individualidade. Uma experiência singular do feminismo brasileiro

Nesta dissertação abordaremos a indumentarista, professora e feminista Sophia Jobim Magno de Carvalho (1904 1968). Sophia Jobim nascida Maria Sofia Pinheiro Machado Jobim, em Avaré em 19 de Setembro de 1904. Fundou em 1947, a primeira sede do Clube Soroptimista no Brasil, em sua casa com Bertha Lutz, ocupando o cargo de presidente durante quatro anos. Em 1949, ocupa o cargo de regente da disciplina de Indumentária e Arte Decorativa na Escola Nacional de Belas-Artes (ENBA). Através desse cargo, Sophia viajava para colecionar peças de diferentes países e apresentá-los nas suas aulas, além de fundar o primeiro museu de indumentária da América Latina, em sua casa, em Santa Teresa RJ, em 1960. Após sua morte por embolia pulmonar, em 1968, seu acervo é totalmente doado ao Museu Histórico Nacional, instituição na qual se graduou no Curso de Museologia, em 1963. Com este trabalho pretendemos trazer à tona uma parcela do material doado por Sophia e evidenciando suas ações como feminista, trazendo para o trabalho a discussão em torno do individuo utilizando como teóricos Georg Simmel e Gilberto Velho. A formação da ENBA, e a cooptação dos intelectuais no Estado Novo são temas a serem mobilizados durante o trabalho, além da sociabilidade como forma de análise do período e do campo por onde Sophia caminhou. Através deste trabalho buscamos proporcionar uma breve visão sobre Sophia Jobim e contribuir aos estudos sobre o feminismo e a individualidade.

Study by Hall probe mapping of the trapped flux modification produced by local heating in YBCO HTS bulks for different surface/volume ratios

The aim of this report is to compare the trapped field distribution under a local heating created at the sample edge for different sample morphologies. Hall probe mappings of the magnetic induction trapped in YBCO bulk samples maintained out of thermal equilibrium were performed on YBCO bulk single domains, YBCO single domains with regularly spaced hole arrays, and YBCO superconducting foams. The capability of heat draining was quantified by two criteria: the average induction decay and the size of the thermally affected zone caused by a local heating of the sample. Among the three investigated sample shapes, the drilled single domain displays a trapped induction which is weakly affected by the local heating while displaying a high trapped field. Finally, a simple numerical modelling of the heat flux spreading into a drilled sample is used to suggest some design rules about the hole configuration and their size. © 2005 IOP Publishing Ltd.
