In this work an efficient third order non-linear finite difference scheme for solving adaptively hyperbolic systems of one-dimensional conservation laws is developed. The method is based oil applying to the solution of the differential equation an interpolating wavelet transform at each time step, generating a multilevel representation for the solution, which is thresholded and a sparse point representation is generated. The numerical fluxes obtained by a Lax-Friedrichs flux splitting are evaluated oil the sparse grid by an essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) approximation, which chooses the locally smoothest stencil among all the possibilities for each point of the sparse grid. The time evolution of the differential operator is done on this sparse representation by a total variation diminishing (TVD) Runge-Kutta method. Four classical examples of initial value problems for the Euler equations of gas dynamics are accurately solved and their sparse solutions are analyzed with respect to the threshold parameters, confirming the efficiency of the wavelet transform as an adaptive grid generation technique. In this paper, a novel combined theoretical and computational model is developed to simulate the heat and mass transfer between a fluidised bed and a workpiece surface, and within the workpiece by considering the fluidised bed as a medium consisting of a double-particle layer and an even porous layer. The heat and mass-transfer flux from the fluidised bed to the workpiece surface is contributed by dense and bubble phases, respectively. The convective heat and mass transfer is simulated by analysing the gas dynamics in the fluidised bed, while radiative heat transfer is modelled by simulating photon emission in a three-dimensional particle array. The simulation shows that convection is approximately constant, while radiation contributes significantly to the heat transfer. The heat-transfer coefficient on an immersed surface near particles is about 6–10 times that on other areas. The transient heat and mass-transfer coefficient, heat and mass-transfer flux on any surface of the workpiece, transient temperature and carbon distributions at any position of the workpiece during the metal carburising process are studied with the simulation.

Fluidisation characteristics at different surfaces of a work-piece of complex geometry are conducted in a fluidised bed at various conditions including fluidising number, bed temperature and fluidising medium. The quenching of the work-piece is performed experimentally. In particular, the major frequency and energy of the pressure fluctuations are measured as a function of either fluidising velocity or heat transfer position and the results are used to develop a mathematic model. A computational model is developed to simulate gas dynamics and heat transfer between the fluidised bed and the work-piece surface, as well as simulating the temperature within the work-piece. The predicted cooling curves are in good agreement with the experimental results. Based on the simulation results, the flow characteristics of the gas and the temperature of the dense gas-solid phase near the work-piece surface are analysed to understand the heat transfer mechanism in the fluidised bed.

Neste trabalho, um problema de transferência de calor da dinâmica de gases rarefeitos, causado pela diferença de temperaturas nas superfícies de um canal, é abordado. O problema é formulado através dos modelos cinéticos BGK, S e Gross-Jackson da equação linearizada de Boltzmann e resolvido, de forma unificada, pelo método analítico de ordenadas discretas (método ADO). Resultados numéricos para as perturbações de densidade e temperatura e também para o fluxo de calor são apresentados e comparados, mostrando que não se pode dizer que algum dos três modelos seja uma melhor aproximação da solução aos resultados da equação linearizada de Boltzmann.

This work reports a conception phase of a piston engine global model. The model objective is forecast the motor performance (power, torque and specific consumption as a function of rotation and environmental conditions). Global model or Zero-dimensional is based on flux balance through each engine component. The resulting differential equations represents a compressive unsteady flow, in which, all dimensional variables are areas or volumes. A review is presented first. The ordinary differential equation system is presented and a Runge-Kutta method is proposed to solve it numerically. The model includes the momentum conservation equation to link the gas dynamics with the engine moving parts rigid body mechanics. As an oriented to objects model the documentation follows the UML standard. A discussion about the class diagrams is presented, relating the classes with physical model related. The OOP approach allows evolution from simple models to most complex ones without total code rewrite. Copyright © 2001 Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc.

The investigation of the dynamics of a discrete soliton in an array of Bose-Einstein condensates under the action of a periodically time-modulated atomic scattering length [Feshbach-resonance management (FRM)] was discussed. The slow and rapid modulations, in comparison with the tunneling frequency were considered. An averaged equation, which was a generalized discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation, including higher-order effective nonlinearities and intersite nonlinear interactions was derived in the case of the rapid modulation. It was demonstrated that the modulations of sufficient strength results in splitting of the soliton by direct simulations.

The near nucleus coma of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 has been simulated with the 3D Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) code PDSC++ (Su, C.-C. [2013]. Parallel Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) Methods for Modeling Rarefied Gas Dynamics. PhD Thesis, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan) and the derived column densities have been compared to observations of the water vapour distribution found by using infrared imaging spectrometer on the Deep Impact spacecraft (Feaga, L.M., A’Hearn, M.F., Sunshine, J.M., Groussin, O., Farnham, T.L. [2007]. Icarus 191(2), 134–145. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2007.04.038). Modelled total production rates are also compared to various observations made at the time of the Deep Impact encounter. Three different models were tested. For all models, the shape model constructed from the Deep Impact observations by Thomas et al. (Thomas, P.C., Veverka, J., Belton, M.J.S., Hidy, A., A’Hearn, M.F., Farnham, T.L., et al. [2007]. Outgassing depending only on the cosine of the solar insolation angle on each shape model facet is shown to provide an unsatisfactory model. Models constructed on the basis of active areas suggested by Kossacki and Szutowicz (Kossacki, K., Szutowicz, S. [2008]. Icarus, 195(2), 705–724. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.icarus.2007.12.014) are shown to be superior. The Kossacki and Szutowicz model, however, also shows deficits which we have sought to improve upon. For the best model we investigate the properties of the outflow.

ATCA H I and radio continuum observations of the peculiar southern galaxy IC 2554 and its surroundings reveal typical signatures of an interacting galaxy group. We detected a large H I cloud between IC 2554 and the elliptical galaxy NGC 3136B. The gas dynamics in IC 2554 itself, which is sometimes described as a colliding pair, are surprisingly regular, whereas NGC 3136B was not detected. The H I cloud, which emerges from IC 2554 as a large arc-shaped plume, has a size of similar to30 kpc, larger than that of IC 2554. The total H I mass of the IC 2554 system is similar to2 x 10(9) M., one-third of which resides in the H I cloud. It is possible that tidal interaction between IC 2554 and NGC 3136B caused this spectacular H I cloud, but the possibility of IC 2554 being a merger remnant is also discussed. We also detected H I gas in the nearby galaxies ESO 092-G009 and RKK 1959 and an associated H I cloud, ATCA J1006-6710. Together they have an H I mass of similar to4.6 x 10(8) M-.. Another new H I source, ATCA J1007-6659, with an H I mass of only similar to2.2 x 10(7) M. was detected roughly between IC 2554 and ESO 092-G009 and corresponds to a face-on low surface brightness dwarf galaxy. Star formation is evident only in the galaxy IC 2554 with a rate of similar to4 M. yr(-1).
