During the last fifteen years organocatalysis emerged as a powerful tool for the enantioselective functionalization of the most different organic molecules. Both C-C and C-heteroatom bonds can be formed in an enantioselective fashion using many types of catalyst and the field is always growing. Many kind of chiral catalysts have emerged as privileged, but among them Proline, cinchona alkaloids, BINOL, and their derivatives showed to be particularly useful chiral scaffolds. This thesis, after a short presentation of many organocatalysts and activation modes, focuses mainly on cinchona alkaloid derived primary amines and BINOL derived chiral Brønsted acids, describing their properties and applications. Then, in the experimental part, these compounds are used for the catalysis of new transformations. The enantioselective Friedel-Crafts alkylation of cyclic enones with naphthols using cinchona alkaloid derived primary amines as catalysts is presented and discussed. The results of this work were very good and this resulted also in a publication. The same catalysts are then used to accomplish the enantioselective addition of indoles to cyclic enones. Many catalysts in combination with many acids as co-catalysts were tried and the reaction was fully studied. Selective N-alkylation was obtained in many cases, in combination with quite good to good enantioselectivities. Also other kind of catalysis were tried for this reaction, with interesting results. Another aza-Michael reaction between OH-free hydroxylamines and nitrostyrene using cinchona alkaloid derived thioureas is briefly discussed. Then our attention focused on Brønsted acid catalyzed transformations. With this regard, the Prins cyclization, a reaction never accomplished in an enantioselective fashion until now, is presented and developed. The results obtained are promising. In the last part of this thesis the work carried out abroad is presented. In Prof. Rueping laboratories, an enantioselective Nazarov cyclization using cooperative catalysis and the enantioselective desymmetrization of meso-hydrobenzoin catalyzed by Brønsted acid were studied.

In recent years the need for the design of more sustainable processes and the development of alternative reaction routes to reduce the environmental impact of the chemical industry has gained vital importance. Main objectives especially regard the use of renewable raw materials, the exploitation of alternative energy sources, the design of inherently safe processes and of integrated reaction/separation technologies (e.g. microreactors and membranes), the process intensification, the reduction of waste and the development of new catalytic pathways. The present PhD thesis reports results derived during a three years research period at the School of Chemical Sciences of Alma Mater Studiorum-University of Bologna, Dept. of Industrial Chemistry and Materials (now Dept. of Industrial Chemistry “Toso Montanari”), under the supervision of Prof. Fabrizio Cavani (Catalytic Processes Development Group). Three research projects in the field of heterogeneous acid catalysis focused on potential industrial applications were carried out. The main project, regarding the conversion of lignocellulosic materials to produce monosaccharides (important intermediates for production of biofuels and bioplatform molecules) was financed and carried out in collaboration with the Italian oil company eni S.p.A. (Istituto eni Donegani-Research Center for non-Conventional Energies, Novara, Italy) The second and third academic projects dealt with the development of green chemical processes for fine chemicals manufacturing. In particular, (a) the condensation reaction between acetone and ammonia to give triacetoneamine (TAA), and (b) the Friedel-Crafts acylation of phenol with benzoic acid were investigated.

The research work reported in this Thesis was held along two main lines of research. The first and main line of research is about the synthesis of heteroaromatic compounds with increasing steric hindrance, with the aim of preparing stable atropisomers. The main tools used for the study of these dynamic systems, as described in the Introduction, are DNMR, coupled with line shape simulation and DFT calculations, aimed to the conformational analysis for the prediction of the geometries and energy barriers to the trasition states. This techniques have been applied to the research projects about: • atropisomers of arylmaleimides; • atropisomers of 4-arylpyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridines; • study of the intramolecular NO2/CO interaction in solution; • study on 2-arylpyridines. Parallel to the main project, in collaboration with other groups, the research line about determination of the absolute configuration was followed. The products, deriving form organocatalytic reactions, in many cases couldn’t be analyzed by means of X-Ray diffraction, making necessary the development of a protocol based on spectroscopic methodologies: NMR, circular dichroism and computational tools (DFT, TD-DFT) have been implemented in this scope. In this Thesis are reported the determination of the absolute configuration of: • substituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines; • compounds from enantioselective Friedel-Crafts alkylation-acetalization cascade of naphthols with α,β-unsaturated cyclic ketones; • substituted 3,4-annulated indoles.

The multimodal biology activity of ergot alkaloids is known by humankind since middle ages. Synthetically modified ergot alkaloids are used for the treatment of various medical conditions. Despite the great progress in organic syntheses, the total synthesis of ergot alkaloids remains a great challenge due to the complexity of their polycyclic structure with multiple stereogenic centres. This project has developed a new domino reaction between indoles bearing a Michael acceptor at the 4 position and nitroethene, leading to potential ergot alkaloid precursors in highly enantioenriched form. The reaction was optimised and applied to a large variety of substrate with good results. Even if unfortunately all attempts to further modify the obtained polycyclic structure failed, it was found a reaction able to produce the diastereoisomer of the polycyclic product in excellent yields. The compounds synthetized were characterized by NMR and ESIMS analysis confirming the structure and their enantiomeric excess was determined by chiral stationary phase HPLC. The mechanism of the reaction was evaluated by DFT calculations, showing the formation of a key bicoordinated nitronate intermediate, and fully accounting for the results observed with all substrates. The relative and absolute configuration of the adducts were determined by a combination of NMR, ECD and computational methods.

A great deal of effort has been made at searching for alternative catalysts to replace conventional Lewis acid catalyst aluminum trichloride (AlCl3). In this paper, immobilization of AlCl3 on mesoporous MCM-41 silica with and without modification was carried out. The catalytic properties of the immobilized catalyst systems for liquid-phase isopropylation of naphthalene were studied and compared with those of H/MCM-41 and H/mordenite. The structures of the surface-immobilized aluminum chloride catalysts were studied and identified by using solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The catalytic activity of the immobilized catalysts was found to be similar to that of acidic mordenite zeolite. A significant enhancement in the selectivity of 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene (2,6-DIPN) was observed over the immobilized aluminum chloride catalysts. Immobilization of aluminum chloride on mesoporous silica coupled with surface silylation is a promising way of developing alternative catalyst system for liquid-phase Friedel-Crafts alkylation reactions. Paper-based phenolic laminates are used extensively in the electrical industry. Many small components are fabricated from these materials by the process known as punching. Recently an investigation was carried out to study the effect of processing variables on the punching properties. It was concluded that further work would be justified and that this should include a critical examination of the resin properties in a more controlled and systematic manner. In this investigation an attempt has been made to assess certain features of the resin structure in terms of thermomechanical properties. The number of crosslinks in the system was controlled using resins based on phenol and para-cresol formulations. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding effects were examined using substituted resins and a synthetically derived phenol based on 1,3-di-(o-hydroxyphenyl) propane.. A resin system was developed using the Friedel Crafts reaction to examine inter-molecular hydrogen bonding at the resin-paper interface. The punching properties of certain selected resins were assessed on a qualitative basis. In addition flexural and dynamic mechanical properties were determined in a general study of the structure-property relationships of these materials. It has been shown that certain features of the resin structure significantly influenced mechanical properties. :F'urther, it was noted that there is a close relationship between punching properties, mechanical damping and flexural strain. This work includes a critical examination of the curing mechanism and views are postulated in an attempt to extend knowledge in this area of the work. Finally, it is argued that future work should be based on a synthetic approach and that dynamic mechanical testing would provide a powerful tool In developing a deeper understanding of the resin fine structure.

In the hustle and bustle of daily life, how often do we stop to pay attention to the tiny details around us, some of them right beneath our feet? Such is the case of interesting decorative patterns that can be found in squares and sidewalks beautified by the traditional Portuguese pavement. Its most common colors are the black and the white of the basalt and the limestone used; the result is a large variety and richness in patterns. No doubt, it is worth devoting some of our time enjoying the lovely Portuguese pavement, a true worldwide attraction. The interesting patterns found on the Azorean handicrafts are as fascinating and substantial from the cultural point of view. Patterns existing in the sidewalks and crafts can be studied from the mathematical point of view, thus allowing a thorough and rigorous cataloguing of such heritage. The mathematical classification is based on the concept of symmetry, a unifying principle of geometry. Symmetry is a unique tool for helping us relate things that at first glance may appear to have no common ground at all. By interlacing different fields of endeavor, the mathematical approach to sidewalks and crafts is particularly interesting, and an excellent source of inspiration for the development of highly motivated recreational activities. This text is an invitation to visit the nine islands of the Azores and to identify a wide range of patterns, namely rosettes and friezes, by getting to know different arts and crafts and sidewalks.

There is nothing as amazing and fascinating as children learning process. Between 0 and 6 years old, a child brain develops in a waythat will never be repeated. At this age, children are eager to discover and they have great potential of active and affective life.Because of this, their learning capacity in this period is incalculable. (Jordan-Decarbo y Nelson, 2002; Wild, 1999).Pre-school Education is a unique and special stage, with self identity, which aims are:attending children as a whole, motivate them to learn, give them an affective and stable environment in which they can grow up and get to be balanced and confident people and inwhich they can relate to others, learn, enjoy and be happy.Arts, Music, Visual Arts and Drama (Gardner, 1994) can provide a framework of special, even unique, personal expression. With the aim of introducing qualitative improvements in the education of children and to ensure their emotional wellbeing, and havingnoticed that teachers had important needs and concerns as regards to diversity in their student groups, we developed a programbased on the detection of needs and concerns explained by professionals in education. This program of Grupo edebé, object of our research, is a multicultural, interdisciplinary and globalizing project the aims of which are:developing children's talent and personality, keeping their imagination and creativity and using these as a learning resource, promoting reasoning, favouring expression and communication, providing children with the tools to manage their emotions, and especially, introducing Arts as a procedure to increase learning. We wanted to start the research by studying the impact (Brice, 2003) that this last point had on the learning of five-year-old childrenschooled in multicultural environments. Therefore, the main goal of the research was the assessment of the implementation of a child education programme attending todiversity in a population of five-year-old children, specifically in the practice of procedures based on the use of Arts (music, arts andcrafts and theatre) as a vehicle or procedure for learning contents in Pre-school stage.Because children emotional welfare was a subject of our concern, and bearing in mind that the affective aspects are of vitalimportance for learning and child development (Parke and Gauvain, 2009), Grupo Edebé has also evaluated the starting, evolving andfinal impact in five-year-old children given that they finish Pre-school education at that age.
