The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of sugarcane juice treatment using Moringa oleifera leaf and seeds extracts on ethanolic fermentation. The experiment was arranged in a split plot statistical design, with four replications. Main treatments were three sedimentation agents (synthetic polyelectrolyte, moringa leaf and seed extracts) and control while the secondary treatments were two sugarcane varieties (RB867515 and CTC4). Extracted sugarcane juice was clarified by simple defecation with pH adjusted to 6.0. The flocculating agents were added in a decanter before the limed juice. After then, the juice was standardized to 16° Brix at pH 4.5, and musts were inoculated with yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain, FT858. At the end of the fermentation process, wines were recovered by centrifugation. In all experimental stages, extracted juice, clarified juice and wine were chemically and technologically characterized. The use of moringa leaf and seed extracts as sedimentation adjuvants did not increase the sedimentation speed of impurities. However, there was a high sludge compaction, which was essential for maintenance of yeast and bud population at the beginning of fermentation, and yeast budding rate in the end. The use of different sedimentation agents as adjuvants in juice treatment did not affect wine quality and ethanol yield.

The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.) leaves flour in beef burger during storage for 120 days. Six hamburger formulations were processed: one control (without the use of additives), four with addition of Moringa leaves flour (0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.25 g/100 g aggregate), and one with addition of synthetic antioxidant Propyl Gallate (0.01 g/100 g aggregate). The products were analyzed for their chemical composition with determinations of moisture, protein, dietary fiber, lipids, ash, carbohydrate, and caloric value after preparation. Microbiological and acceptance testing were performed at the beginning and after 120 days of storage. Determination of pH, instrumental color and lipid oxidation (TBARS) were performed at 1, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of storage. All samples showed physical-chemical and microbiological tests in accordance with the Brazilian legislation. pH measurements were between 5.48 and 5.90; however, the intensity of red has changed according to the treatments and storage periods. The addition of Moringa leaves flour had no antioxidant effect on burgers, but its inclusion not only contributed to the improvement of nutritional quality, but also did not harm product acceptance.

Estudio de la posibilidad de introducción de la Moringa oleifera en la Península Ibérica, Islas Baleares e Islas Canarias. Se hace un análisis de las características de esta planta , para dar a conocer su cultivo y usos potenciales por los que pueda resultar interesante la introducción, así como su distribución actual (tanto en la región de origen, como donde se ha introducido) y sus características ecológicas. De esta manera, se consigue una clasificación de los parámetros ecológicos que definen el hábitat de la especie , determinantes para conocer si es posible su introducción en el territorio objeto del estudio. Para conocer la aptitud de la Península, las Islas Baleares y el archipiélago Canario para la introducción de la moringa, se va a realizar un análisis de sus parámetros ecológicos (fisiográficos, climáticos y edáficos) de la especie en el territorio objeto de estudio. Para finalmente conocer las áreas potenciales de introducción de la Moringa oleifera en la Península Ibérica, Islas Baleares e Islas Canarias. Islas Canarias.

With the increasing environmental awareness, maximizing biodegradability and minimizing ecotoxicity is the main driving force for new technological developments. Thus, can be developed new biodegradable lubricants for use in environmentally sensitive areas. The aim of this study was to obtain new bio-lubricants from passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarpa Degener) and moringa (Moringa oleifera Lamarck) epoxidized oils and develop a new additive package using experimental design for their use as a hydraulic fluid. In the first stage of this work was performed the optimization of the epoxidation process of the oils using fractional experimental design 24-1 , varying the temperature, reaction time, ratio of formic acid and hydrogen peroxide. In the second step was investigated the selectivity, thermodynamics and kinetics of the reaction for obtaining the two epoxides at 30, 50 and 70 °C. The result of the experimental design confirmed that the epoxidation of passion fruit oil requires 2 hours of reaction, 50 °C and a ratio H2O2/C=C/HCOOH (1:1:1). For moringa oil were required 2 hours reaction, 50 °C and a ratio of H2O2/C=C/HCOOH (1:1:1.5). The results of the final conversions were equal to 83.09% (± 0.3) for passion fruit oil epoxide and 91.02 (±0,4) for moringa oil epoxide. Following was made the 23 factorial design to evaluate which are the best concentrations of corrosion inhibitor and anti-wear (IC), antioxidant (BHA) and extreme pressure (EP) additives. The bio-lubricants obtained in this step were characterized according to DIN 51524 (Part 2 HLP) and DIN 51517 (Part 3 CLP) standards. The epoxidation process of the oils was able to improve the oxidative stability and reduce the total acid number, when compared to the in natura oils. Moreover, the epoxidized oils best solubilized additives, resulting in increased performance as a lubricant. In terms of physicochemical performance, the best lubricant fluid was the epoxidized moringa oil with additives (EMO-ADI), followed by the epoxidized passion fruit oil with additives (EPF-ADI) and, finally, the passion fruit in natura oil without additives (PFO). Lastly, was made the investigation of the tribological behavior under conditions of boundary lubrication for these lubricants. The tribological performance of the developed lubricants was analyzed on a HFRR equipment (High Frequency Reciprocating Rig) and the coefficient of friction, which occurs during the contact and the formation of the lubricating film, was measured. The wear was evaluated through optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the addition of extreme pressure (EP) and anti-wear and corrosion inhibitor (CI) additives significantly improve the tribological properties of the fluids. In all assays, was formed a lubricating film that is responsible for reducing the coefficient of metal-to-metal wear. It was observed that the addition of EP and IC additives in the in natura vegetable oils of passion fruit and moringa did not favor a significant reduction in wear. The bio-lubricants developed from passion fruit and moringa oils modified via epoxidation presented satisfactory tribological properties and shown to be potential lubricants for replacement of commercial mineral-based fluids.

This study was conducted to assess the effect of air-dried Moringa stenopetala leaf (MSL) supplementation on carcass components and meat quality in Arsi-Bale goats. A total of 24 yearling goats with initial body weight of 13.6+/-0.25 kg were randomly divided into four treatments with six goats each. All goats received a basal diet of natural grass hay ad libitum and 340 g head^(−1) d^(−1) concentrate. The treatment diets contain a control diet without supplementation (T1) and diets supplemented with MSL at a rate of 120 g head^(−1) d^(−1) (T2), 170 g head^(−1) d^(−1) (T3) and 220 g head^(−1) d^(−1) (T4). The results indicated that the average slaughter weight of goats reared on T3 and T4 was 18.2 and 18.3 kg, respectively, being (P<0.05) higher than those of T1 (15.8 kg) and T2 (16.5 kg). Goats fed on T3 and T4 diets had higher (P<0.05) daily weight gain compared with those of T1 and T2. The hot carcass weight in goats reared on T3 and T4 diets was 6.40 and 7.30 kg, respectively, being (P<0.05) higher than those of T1 (4.81 kg) and T2 (5.06 kg). Goats reared on T4 had higher (P<0.05) dressing percentage than those reared in other treatment diets. The rib-eye area in goats reared on T2, T3 and T4 diets was higher (P<0.05) than those of T1. The protein content of the meat in goats reared on T3 and T4 was 24.0 and 26.4%, respectively being significantly higher than those of T1 (19.1%) and T2 (20.1%). In conclusion, the supplementation of MSL to natural grass hay improved the weight gain and carcass parts of Arsi-Bale goats indicating Moringa leaves as alternative protein supplements to poor quality forages.

En los sistemas ganaderos pastoriles, el manejo de excedentes y déficits estacionales e interanuales de forraje mediante el uso de reservas forrajeras impacta sobre la eficiencia de utilización las pasturas (manejo, productividad, y cosecha), y consecuentemente sobre el desempeño animal y productividad del sistema. En este trabajo se reporta información sobre la productividad y calidad de distintos recursos forrajeros que se utilizan para la confección de forrajes conservados. Se presenta información sobre la respuesta animal esperada para distintos momentos de confección, tipos de reservas (henos vs. Silos) para distintas categorías de animales. Se hace particular énfasis en los puntos críticos para lograr reservas de buena calidad y sobre el uso de las reservas como suplemento de pasturas, en dietas de recría y dietas engorde a corral. Finalmente se destacan algunas deficiencias nutricionales comunes en las reservas forrajeras y su modo de corrección. Aunque es bien conocido que la confección de reservas forrajeras - silos y henos - es una herramienta para la intensificación de los sistemas ganaderos que impacta sobre la productividad individual y por hectárea del sistema, hay que tener en cuenta aspectos claves para la obtención de una reserva de buena calidad y optimizar la ventajas de las reservas en el sistema como son la productividad del material a utilizar, el momento de corte, la conservación y la utilización.

Drinking water is currently a scarce world resource, the preparation of which requires complex treatments that include clarification of suspended particles and disinfection. Seed extracts of Moringa oleifera Lam., a tropical tree, have been proposed as an environment-friendly alternative, due to their traditional use for the clarification of drinking water. However, the precise nature of the active components of the extract and whether they may be produced in recombinant form are unknown. Here we show that recombinant or synthetic forms of a cationic seed polypeptide mediate efficient sedimentation of suspended mineral particles and bacteria. Unexpectedly, the polypeptide was also found to possesses a bactericidal activity capable of disinfecting heavily contaminated water. Furthermore, the polypeptide has been shown to efficiently kill several pathogenic bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant isolates of Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Legionella species. Thus, this polypeptide displays the unprecedented feature of combining water purification and disinfectant properties. Identification of an active principle derived from the seed extracts points to a range of potential for drinking water treatment or skin and mucosal disinfection in clinical settings.
Characterization of a plant-derived peptide displaying water clarifying and antimicrobial activities

Seed extracts of Moringa oleifera Lam., a tropical tree, have been proposed as an environment- friendly alternative, due to their traditional use for the clarification of drinking water. However, the precise nature of the active components was unknown. Here, we show that recombinant or synthetic forms of a cationic seed polypeptide mediate efficient sedimentation of suspended mineral particles and bacteria. Unexpectedly, the polypeptide was also found to possesses a bactericidal activity capable of disinfecting heavily contaminated water. Furthermore, the polypeptide has been shown to efficiently kill several pathogenic bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant isolates of Pseudomona, Streptococcus and Legionella species. Structural modeling of the peptide coupled to the functional analysis of synthetic peptide derivatives delineated distinct structural determinants for the flocculation and antibacterial activities. Our results suggest that a glutamine-rich portion of the polypeptide is involved in the sedimentation process; alternatively, the antibacterial activity depends on a amphiphilic loop. Assembly of multiple copies of this loop into a branched peptide derivative strongly enhances antibacterial activity without displaying hemolytic effect. In conclusion, this polypeptide displays the unprecedented feature of combining efficient water purification and disinfectant properties indicating different molecular mechanisms involved in each case. This work not only identified the features responsible for these activities but also provides useful information that has implications for the further development of this cationic polypeptide as a potent antibacterial agent. RESUME L'eau potable est actuellement une ressource limitée dans le monde. La production d'eau propre à la consommation exige des traitements complexes, incluant la clarification des particules en suspension ainsi que sa désinfection par des additifs chimiques. Les extraits de la graine d'un arbre tropical, Moringa oleifera, sont utilisés traditionnellement en Afrique afin de clarifier l'eau. Quoique la nature exacte des composants actifs était inconnue, on a pu mettre en évidence un polypeptide cationique contenu dans ces graines, capable de sédimenter de manière efficace des particules minérales en suspension ainsi que des bactéries. Ce travail a aussi mis en évidence que ce polypeptide a une activité bactéricide, permettant une désinfection d'eau fortement contaminée. De plus, nous avons démontré que ce polypeptide est efficace contre de nombreuses souches bactériennes pathogènes, également celles résistantes aux antibiotiques comme Pseudomonas, Streptococcus et Legionella. L'analyse de la structure moléculaire de ce polypeptide, couplée à son analyse fonctionnelle a mis en évidence deux domaines structuraux distinct, un pour l'activité de floculation et l'autre pour l'activité antibactérienne. Nos résultats suggèrent que le domaine riche en glutamine est impliqué dans le processus de sédimentation et que l'activité antimicrobienne dépend d'un domaine formant une boucle amphiphilique. En ramifiant plusieurs copies de cette boucle on a pu augmenter de manière significative l'activité antibactérienne. En conclusion, nous avons pu démontrer que ce polypeptide à la capacité unique de combiner des propriétés de purification et de désinfection de l'eau, ce qui implique des mécanismes moléculaires distincts pour ces deux activités. Ce travail a permis d'identifier les domaines du polypeptide qui sont responsables de ses activités et offre une perspective pour le développement d'un nouvel agent antimicrobien.

Crushed seeds of the Moringa oleifera tree have been used traditionally as natural flocculants to clarify drinking water. We previously showed that one of the seed peptides mediates both the sedimentation of suspended particles such as bacterial cells and a direct bactericidal activity, raising the possibility that the two activities might be related. In this study, the conformational modeling of the peptide was coupled to a functional analysis of synthetic derivatives. This indicated that partly overlapping structural determinants mediate the sedimentation and antibacterial activities. Sedimentation requires a positively charged, glutamine-rich portion of the peptide that aggregates bacterial cells. The bactericidal activity was localized to a sequence prone to form a helix-loop-helix structural motif. Amino acid substitution showed that the bactericidal activity requires hydrophobic proline residues within the protruding loop. Vital dye staining indicated that treatment with peptides containing this motif results in bacterial membrane damage. Assembly of multiple copies of this structural motif into a branched peptide enhanced antibacterial activity, since low concentrations effectively kill bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pyogenes without displaying a toxic effect on human red blood cells. This study thus identifies a synthetic peptide with potent antibacterial activity against specific human pathogens. It also suggests partly distinct molecular mechanisms for each activity. Sedimentation may result from coupled flocculation and coagulation effects, while the bactericidal activity would require bacterial membrane destabilization by a hydrophobic loop.

Para estudar o efeito do Al no crescimento inicial de duas espécies florestais, foi instalado um experimento em novembro de 1998, em solução nutritiva, em casa de vegetação do Departamento de Ciência do Solo da Universidade Federal de Lavras. Após duas semanas em solução nutritiva diluída a 1/3 e sem Al, duas plantas de Moringa (Moringa oleifera) e duas de Angico (Anandenantha peregrina) foram transplantadas para vasos de 1,5 L e crescidas em solução nutritiva. Os teores de Al utilizados foram de 0,0; 2,5; 5,0; 7,5; e 10,0 mg L-1, com pH 4,0 ± 0,2, ajustado diariamente durante 70 dias. Após este período, foi determinada a altura das plantas, as quais, posteriormente, foram divididas em parte aérea e raiz, para determinação da matéria seca e dos teores de N e P. Os teores crescentes de Al reduziram progressivamente a altura das plantas e a produção de matéria seca das raízes nas duas espécies e da parte aérea no Angico. O teor de nitrogênio na Moringa diminuiu com o incremento nos teores de Al. O teor de fósforo na parte aérea da Moringa e do Angico diminui a partir de 5 mg L-1 de Al na solução nutritiva.

Durante 1998 e 2000, a incidência de murcha bacteriana causada por Ralstonia solanacearum foi registrada em 25 municípios do estado do Amazonas. A bactéria foi encontrada nas seguintes espécies vegetais: Capsicum annuum, C. chinense, C. frutescens, Cucumis sativus, Heliconia sp., Lycopersicon esculentum, Melanthera discoidea, Moringa oleifera, Musa sp., Solanum melongena, S. gilo, e S. nigrum. Em tomateiros (Lycopersicon esculentum), a murcha bacteriana estava presente em todos os plantios. Em bananeiras (Musa spp.), a incidência do Moko foi menor nas várzeas dos rios Madeira e Negro do que nas dos rios Solimões e Amazonas. Caracterizaram-se 320 isolados de R. solanacearum, obtidos no levantamento, com relação a raça e a biovar. A biovar 1 predominou em todos os hospedeiros, com exceção de C. annuum e C. chinense, onde estirpes da biovar 3 foram maioria. Apenas 7,8% das estirpes foram da biovar N2. A sensibilidade de 56 estirpes da raça 1 a 23 bacteriocinas foi avaliada. As estirpes da biovar 3 apresentaram uma menor variabilidade, na sensibilidade a bacteriocinas do que as estirpes das biovares 1 e N2.

Com o objetivo de determinar a dose e a faixa de pH dos coagulantes sulfato de alumínio (SA), sulfato ferroso clorado (SFC), cloreto férrico (CF) e extrato de semente de moringa (ESM), que proporcionassem maior eficiência na remoção da turbidez na água residuária da despolpa de frutos do cafeeiro (ARDC), após serem efetuadas cinco recirculações, foram conduzidos ensaios de coagulação/floculação utilizando o aparelho "Jar-test". Todos esses coagulantes foram avaliados nas concentrações de 0; 0,5; 1,0; 1,5; 2,0; 2,5 e 3,0 g L-1. No caso da solução preparada com ESM, as doses utilizadas foram: 0; 10; 20; 30; 40; 50 e 60 mL L-1. O pH da solução em teste foi alterado, utilizando-se do hidróxido de sódio (NaOH), na concentração de 0,3 mol L-1, sendo avaliadas as faixas de 4,0 a 5,0; 5,0 a 6,0; 6,0 a 7,0 e 7,0 a 8,0. No ensaio de coagulação/floculação, o ESM proporcionou maior remoção de SS (sólidos em suspensão) da ARDC com a dose de 10 mL L-1 e pH de 4,27 (natural). Para os coagulantes SA e CF, os melhores resultados foram obtidos com a concentração de 3 g L-1 e pH de 7,27 e, para o coagulante SFC, com a concentração de 3 g L-1 e pH de 4,27.

Pure O-methyl N-methoxycarbonyl thiocarbamate CH(3)OC(S)N(H)C(O)OCH(3) (I) and O-ethyl N-methoxycarbonyl thiocarbamate, CH(3)CH(2)OC(S)N(H)C(O)OCH(3) (II), are quantitatively prepared by the addition reaction between the CH(3)OC(O)NCS and the corresponding alcohols. The compounds are characterized by multinuclear ((1)H and (13)C) and bi-dimensional ((13)C HSQC) NMR, GC-MS and FTIR spectroscopy techniques. Structural and conformational properties are analyzed using a combined approach involving crystallographic data, vibration spectra and theoretical calculations. The low-temperature (150 K) crystal structure of II was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The substance crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 4.088(1)angstrom. b = 22.346(1)angstrom, c = 8.284(1)angstrom, beta = 100.687(3)degrees and Z = 4 molecules per unit cell. The conformation adopted by the thiocarbamate group -OC(S)N(H)- is syn (C=S double bond in synperiplanar orientation with respect to the N-H single bond), while the methoxycarbonyl C=O double bond is in antiperiplanar orientation with respect to the N-H bond. The non-H atoms in II are essentially coplanar and the molecules are arranged in the crystal lattice as centro-symmetric dimeric units held by N-H center dot center dot center dot S=C hydrogen bonds Id(N center dot center dot center dot S) = 3.387(1)angstrom, <(N-H center dot center dot center dot S) = 166.4(2)degrees]. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da inclusão de aditivos na ensilagem de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum officinarum L.) sobre a degradação de MS e de componentes da parede celular e sobre os parâmetros de fermentação ruminal em bovinos alimentados com dietas contendo essas silagens. Utilizaram-se cinco novilhos da raça Nelore providos de cânula ruminal, alocados em delineamento quadrado latino 5 ´ 5 e alimentados com dietas com 65% de volumoso (%) MS. Foram avaliadas cinco silagens (base úmida): controle - cana-de-açúcar, sem aditivos; uréia - cana-de-açúcar + 0,5% ureia; benzoato - cana-de-açúcar + 0,1% de benzoato de sódio; LP - cana-de-açúcar inoculada com Lactobacillus plantarum (1 ´ 10(6) ufc/g MV); LB - cana-de-açúcar inoculada com L. buchneri (3,6 ´ 10(5) ufc/g forragem). A forragem foi armazenada em silos do tipo poço por 90 dias antes do fornecimento aos animais. Os parâmetros ruminais foram afetados de forma moderada pelas silagens e tiveram forte efeito do horário de coleta de amostras. As concentrações molares médias dos ácidos acético, propiônico e butírico foram de 60,9; 19,3 e 10,2 mM, respectivamente. O ambiente ruminal proporcionado por dietas formuladas com silagens de cana-de-açúcar foi satisfatório e similar ao tradicionalmente observado em dietas contendo cana. O uso de aditivos na ensilagem influenciou, de forma não-significativa, a degradabilidade ruminal da MS e da MO, mas não alterou a degradabilidade ruminal da fração fibrosa. Os aditivos aplicados à cana-de-açúcar resultaram em pequenas alterações na maior parte das variáveis avaliadas. Apesar de a degradabilidade ruminal das silagens ter sido pouco afetada pelo uso de aditivos, os valores observados foram próximos aos observados para a cana-de-açúcar in natura.
