The characterization of a closed-cell aluminum foam with the trade name Alporas is carried out here under compression loading for a nominal cross-head speed of 1 mm/min. Foam samples in the form of cubes are tested in a UTM and the average stress-strain behavior is obtained which clearly displays a plateau strength of approximately 2 MPa. It is noted that the specific energy absorption capacity of the foam can be high despite its low strength which makes it attractive as a material for certain energy-absorbing countermeasures. The mechanical behavior of the present Alporas foam is simulated using cellular (i.e. so-called microstructure-based) and solid element-based finite element models. The efficacy of the cellular approach is shown, perhaps for the first time in published literature, in terms of prediction of both stress-strain response and inclined fold formation during axial crush under compression loading. Keeping in mind future applications under impact loads, limited results are presented when foam samples are subjected to low velocity impact in a drop-weight test set-up.

An experimental study and a numerical simulation were conducted to investigate the mechanical and thermodynamic processes involved in the interaction between shock waves and low density foam. The experiment was done in a stainless shock tube (80mm in inner diameter, 10mm in wall thickness and 5360mm in length). The velocities of the incident and reflected compression waves in the foam were measured by using piezo-ceramic pressure sensors. The end-wall peak pressure behind the reflected wave in the foam was measured by using a crystal piezoelectric sensor. It is suggested that the high end-wall pressure may be caused by a rapid contact between the foam and the end-wall surface. Both open-cell and closed-cell foams with different length and density were tested. Through comparing the numerical and experimental end-wall pressure, the permeability coefficients a and 0 are quantitatively determined.

Plastic collapse modes of sandwich beams have been investigated experimentally and theoretically for the case of an aluminum alloy foam with cold-worked aluminum face sheets. Plastic collapse is by three competing mechanisms: face yield, indentation and core shear, with the active mechanism depending upon the choice of geometry and material properties. The collapse loads, as predicted by simple upper bound solutions for a rigid, ideally plastic beam, and by more refined finite element calculations are generally in good agreement with the measured strengths. However, a thickness effect of the foam core on the collapse strength is observed for collapse by core shear: the shear strength of the core increases with diminishing core thickness in relation to the cell size. Limit load solutions are used to construct collapse maps, with the beam geometrical parameters as axes. Upon displaying the collapse load for each collapse mechanism, the regimes of dominance of each mechanism and the associate mass of the beam are determined. The map is then used in optimal design by minimizing the beam weight for a given structural load index.

The transport of an intense electron-beam produced by the Vulcan petawatt laser through dense plasmas has been studied by imaging with high resolution the optical emission due to electron transit through the rear side of coated foam targets. It is observed that the MeV-electron beam undergoes strong filamentation and the filaments organize themselves in a ringlike structure. This behavior has been modeled using particle-in-cell simulations of the laser-plasma interaction as well as of the transport of the electron beam through the preionized plasma. In the simulations the filamentary structures are reproduced and attributed to the Weibel instability.

Bone tissue engineering may provide an alternative to autograft, however scaffold optimisation is required to maximize bone ingrowth. In designing scaffolds, pore architecture is important and there is evidence that cells prefer a degree of non-uniformity. The aim of this study was to compare scaffolds derived from a natural porous marine sponge (Spongia agaricina) with unique architecture to those derived from a synthetic polyurethane foam. Hydroxyapatite scaffolds of 1 cm3 were prepared via ceramic infiltration of a marine sponge and a polyurethane (PU) foam. Human foetal osteoblasts (hFOB) were seeded at 1x105 cells/scaffold for up to 14 days. Cytotoxicity, cell number, morphology and differentiation were investigated. PU-derived scaffolds had 84-91% porosity and 99.99% pore interconnectivity. In comparison marine sponge-derived scaffolds had 56-61% porosity and 99.9% pore interconnectivity. hFOB studies showed that a greater number of cells were found on marine sponge-derived scaffolds at than on the PU scaffold but there was no significant difference in cell differentiation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) showed that Si ions were released from the marine-derived scaffold. In summary, three dimensional porous constructs have been manufactured that support cell attachment, proliferation and differentiation but significantly more cells were seen on marine-derived scaffolds. This could be due both to the chemistry and pore architecture of the scaffolds with an additional biological stimulus from presence of Si ions. Further in vivo tests in orthotopic models are required but this marine-derived scaffold shows promise for applications in bone tissue engineering.

Scavenger or Fc gamma receptors are important for capture and clearance of modified LDL particles by monocytes/macrophages. Uptake via scavenger receptors is not regulated by intracellular levels of cholesterol and in consequence, macrophages develop into foam cells in the arterial intima. The levels of scavenger receptor CD36 are increased in atherosclerotic lesions and there is evidence that some components of oxLDL auto-regulate the expression of this receptor. Fc gamma receptor expression is increased in cardiovascular diseases but it is not known weather their expression is regulated by oxLDL. The biological properties of oxLDLs vary depending on the degree of oxidation. In the present study we investigated the effect of LDL particles showing extensive or low oxidation (HoxLDL and LoxLDL) on the expression of CD36 and Fc gamma RII in a human monocytic cell line (THP-1), differentiated or not to macrophage, and the involvement of PPAR gamma. It was found that both forms of oxLDL are able to increase the expression of CD36 and Fc gamma RII and that this effect is dependent on the degree of oxidation and of the stage of cell differentiation ( monocyte or macrophage). We also showed that the increased expression of Fc gamma RII is dependent on PPAR. whereas that of the CD36 is independent of PPAR gamma. Copyright (c) 2008 S. Karger AG, Basel

Flotation is a process of cell separation based on the affinity of cells to air bubbles. In the present work, flotability and hydrophobicity were determined using cells from different yeasts (Hansenulla polymorpha, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans), which were propagated in different media and at different temperatures. Alterations to the supernatant of the cells were also carried out before the flotation assays. The results described here indicate that supernatants of the yeast cells can play a more important role on flotation than cell-wall hydrophobicity. For example, wall-hydrophobicity of strain FLT-01 of S. cerevisiae was high but flotation did not occur when their washed cells were resuspended in water. Additions of neopeptone to cultures of S. cerevisiae and H. polymorpha repressed flotation and increased the volume of foam. An additional task of the present work was to show that the relationship between cell-wall hydrophobicity and flotation performance was dependent on the method used for the measurement of hydrophobicity. Based on the assay procedure, two types of hydrophobicity were distinguished: (a) the apparent hydrophobicity for cells suspended in the medium and expressed by the degree of cell affinity to the organic solvent in the two-phase system supernatant/hexane; (b) the standard hydrophobicity, which was determined for cells suspended in a standard solution (acetate buffer, in the present work) within the acetate buffer/hexane system. Flotation of cells of S. cerevisiae and C albicans were best related to the degree of apparent hydrophobicity (varying with the supernatant composition at the cell/medium interface) rather than to the degree of standard hydrophobicity (varying with the alterations in the wall components, since the liquid phase was constant in the assay). However, depending on the yeast unpredictable results can be obtained. For example, cells of H. polymorpha exhibited good flotation associated to a high degree of standard hydrophobicity while having a lower degree of apparent hydrophobicity. Concerning growth temperature, flotation of cells of C albicans was strongly repressed when the temperature was raised from 30 to 38 degreesC while a similar effect was not observed in cultures of S. cerevisiae and H. polymorpha. It is difficult to understand and predict flotation of yeast cells but simple modifications made to the supernatant of cultures can activate or repress flotation. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Flotation or cell recovery in foams (proportion of the total cells in the medium transferred to the foam) and flotation efficiency (proportion of the cells transferred from an initial volume of medium equal to the residual volume after flotation) are functions of time, aeration rate, initial volume of medium, and initial concentration of cells. Cell recovery reached constant values (around 96.4 +/- 6.3%) and flotation efficiency decreased (owing to increases in the liquid content of the foam), with increases in air how rate (above 6-7 ml air s(-1)) and volumes of medium (above 11 ml) added to the column. Increases in concentration of cells in the medium led to increases in the concentration of cells in the foam.

This article describes a new approach of recycling the leather waste (shavings) using it as filler in natural rubber foams composites. The foams were prepared using different amounts of leather waste (0-60 parts per hundred of rubber) and submitted to morphological (SEM microscopy) and mechanical analyses (cyclic stress-strain compression). The increase of leather shavings on the composite causes an increase of viscosity in the mixture, which reflects in the foaming process. This results in smaller and fairly uniform cells. Furthermore, expanded rubber has the biggest cell size, with more than 70% of cell with 1000 mu m, while the composite with the higher concentration of leather has around 80% of total number of cells with 100-400 mu m. The mechanical parameters were found to depend on the leather dust concentration. Moreover, the stiffness rises with the increase of leather shavings; consequently, the compression force for expanded rubber was 0.126 MPa as well as the composite with higher concentration of leather was 7.55 MPa. The screening. biomass growth of lipase-producing fungus isolated from different sources and available at URM (University Recife Mycologia). as well as, the immobilization and utilization of the whole cells for the transesterification of babassu oil were investigated. Rhizopus oryzae (URM 3231, 4692), Mucor circinelloides (URM 4140, 4182) and Penicillium citrinum URM 4216 were considered to be good intracellular lipase producers whereas those from Mucor hiemalis URM 4144 and Mucor piriformis URM 4145 were weaker. Fungi biomass containing high lipase activities was immobilized on different biomass support particles (BSPs) and with the exception of Penicillium citrinum URM 4216 all the other fungi strains exhibited high lipase activity (20-50 Ug(-1)) when immobilized in situ using polyurethane foam particles. Transesterification activities of the immobilized whole cells were evaluated in the ethanolysis reaction with babassu oil and the highest performance was attained by M. circinelloides URM 4182 giving 83.22 +/- 3.68% ester yield in less than 96 h reaction. The biocatalyst operational stability was also assessed and an inactivation profile was found to follow the Arrhenius model, revealing values of 26 days and 2.6 x 10(-2)day(-1), for half-life and a deactivation coefficient, respectively. The purified product (biodiesel) exhibited viscosity (6.63 cSt) close to the value to attend specifications by the ASTM 06751 to be used as biofuel. Results are favorable compared with data already reported in the literature and demonstrated that M. circinelloides URM 4182 whole cells is a cheaper biocatalyst that can be used in the biodiesel synthesis. In hybrid organic solar cells a blocking layer between transparent electrode and nanocrystalline titania particles is essential to prevent short-circuiting and current loss through recombination at the electrode interface. Here the preparation of a uniform hybrid blocking layer which is composed of conducting titania nanoparticles embedded in an insulating polymer derived ceramic is presented. This blocking layer is prepared by sol-gel chemistry where an amphiphilic block copolymer is used as a templating agent. A novel poly(dimethylsiloxane) containing amphiphilic block copolymer poly(ethyleneglycol)methylethermethacrylate-block-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-poly(ethyleneglycol)methylethermethacrylate has been synthesized to act as the templating agent. Plasma treatment uncovered titania surface from any polymer. Annealing at 450°C under nitrogen resulted in anatase titania with polymer derived silicon oxycarbide ceramic. Electrical characterization by conductive scanning probe microscopy experiments revealed a percolating titania network separated by an insulating ceramic matrix. Scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy showed predominant presence of titania particles on the surface creating a large surface area for dye absorption. The uniformity of the percolating structures was proven by microbeam grazing incidence small angle x-ray scattering. First applications in hybrid organic solar cells in comparison with conventional titanium dioxide blocking layer containing devices revealed 15 fold increases in corresponding efficiencies. Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-poly(ethyleneglycol)methylethermethacrylate and poly(ethyleneoxide)-poly(dimethylsiloxane)methylmethacrylate diblock copolymers were also synthesized. Their titania nanocomposite films were compared with the integrated blocking layer. Liner poly(ethyleneoxide) containing diblock copolymer resulted in highly ordered foam like structures. The effect of heating temperature rise to 600°C and 1000°C on titania morphology was investigated by scanning electron and force microscopy and x-ray scattering. Sol-gel contents, hydrochloric acid, titania precursor and amphiphilic triblock copolymer were altered to see their effect on titania morphology. Increase in block copolymer content resulted in titania particles of diameter 15-20 nm.

This thesis evaluates a novel asymmetric capacitor incorporating a carbon foam supported nickel hydroxide positive electrode and a carbon black negative electrode. A series of symmetric capacitors were prepared to characterize the carbon black (CB) negative electrode. The influence of the binder, PTFE, content on the cell properties was evaluated. X-ray diffraction characterization of the nickel electrode during cycling is also presented. The 3 wt% and 5 wt% PTFE/CB symmetric cells were examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and constant current charge/discharge measurements. As compared with symmetric cells containing more PTFE, the 3 wt% cell has the highest average specific capacitance, energy density and power density over 300 cycles, 121.8 F/g, 6.44 Wh/kg, and 604.1 W/kg, respectively. Over the 3 to 10 wt% PTFE/CB range, the 3 wt% sample exhibited the lowest effective resistance and the highest BET surface area. Three asymmetric cells (3 wt% PTFE/CB negative electrode and a nickel positive) were fabricated; cycle life was examined at 3 current densities. The highest average energy and power densities over 1000 cycles were 20 Wh/kg (21 mA/cm2) and 715 W/kg (31 mA/cm2), respectively. The longest cycle life was 11,505 cycles (at 8 mA/cm2), with an average efficiency of 79% and an average energy density of 14 Wh/kg. The XRD results demonstrate that the cathodically deposited nickel electrode is a typical α-Ni(OH)2 with the R3m structure (ABBCCA stacking); the charged electrodes are 3γ-NiOOH with the same stacking as the α-type; the discharged electrodes (including as-formed electrode) are aged to β’-Ni(OH)2 (a disordered β) with the P3m structure (ABAB stacking). A 3γ remnant was observed.

Electrochemical capacitors have been an important development in recent years in the field of energy storage. Capacitors can be developed by utilizing either double layer capacitance at the electrode/solution interfaces alone or in combination with a battery electrode associated with a faradic redox process in one electrode. An asymmetric capacitor consisting of electrochemically deposited nickel hydroxide, supported on carbon foam as a positive electrode and carbon sheet as a negative electrode has been successfully assembled and cycled. One objective of this study has been to demonstrate the viability of the nickel carbon foam positive electrode, especially in terms of cycle life. Electrochemical characterization shows stable, high cycle performance in 26 wt. % KOH electrolyte with a maximum energy density of 4.1 Wh/Kg and a relaxation time constant of 6.24 s. This cell has demonstrated high cycle life, 14,500 cycles, with efficiency better than 98%. In addition, the cell failure mechanism and self-discharge behavior of the aforesaid capacitor are analyzed.
