Permian to Late Cretaceous allochthonous sedimentary and volcanic rocks exposed in the Batain area (eastern Oman Margin) have received comparably little attention in the past. They largely were considered as part of the Hamrat Duru Group (Hawasina Complex) of the northern Oman Mountains. Structural, kinematic and biostratigraphic results from our mapping campaign in the Batain area have now revealed, that emplacement of these units occurred in a WNW direction during latest Cretaceous/Early Paleogene time. This clearly contrasts with previous models that postulated a S-ward directed obduction in Campanian times such as recorded from the Hawasina Complex and Semail Ophiolite in the Oman Mountains. We herewith establish the `'Batain Group'' comprising all Permian to Late Cretaceous allochthonous units in the Batain Area. These are: 1.) the Permian Qarari Formation deposited in the toe of a slope setting; 2.) the Late Permian to late Liassic Al Jil Formation comprising periplatform detritus and very coarse breccias; 3.) the Scythian to Norian Matbat Formation formed by slope deposits; 4.) the Early Jurassic to early Oxfordian Guwayza Formation with high energy platform detritus; 5.) the Mid-Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous Ruwaydah Formation seamount; and 6.) the Oxfordian to Santonian Wahrah Formation, mainly radiolarites; and 7.) the Santonian to latest Maastrichtian Fayah Formation built by flysch-type sediments. These sedimentary and volcanic rocks represent deposits of the former ``Batain basin'' off eastern-Oman, destroyed by compressional tectonics at the Cretaceous/Paleogene transition. For tectono-stratigraphic reasons the Batain Group does not form part of the Hawasina Complex.

Fluvial deposits are a challenge for modelling flow in sub-surface reservoirs. Connectivity and continuity of permeable bodies have a major impact on fluid flow in porous media. Contemporary object-based and multipoint statistics methods face a problem of robust representation of connected structures. An alternative approach to model petrophysical properties is based on machine learning algorithm ? Support Vector Regression (SVR). Semi-supervised SVR is able to establish spatial connectivity taking into account the prior knowledge on natural similarities. SVR as a learning algorithm is robust to noise and captures dependencies from all available data. Semi-supervised SVR applied to a synthetic fluvial reservoir demonstrated robust results, which are well matched to the flow performance

Os fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) desempenham importante papel nos ecossistemas naturais pelo seus impactos na nutrição vegetal e estrutura do solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o potencial do inóculo micorrízico e a relação do comprimento do micélio micorrízico (CMM) dos FMAs na agregação de solos de ambientes fluviais. Foram realizadas coletas em áreas de ambiente fluvial da bacia hidrográfica do rio Itajaí-Açu, entre os municípios de Gaspar e Navegantes, em Santa Catarina. Oito áreas foram amostradas em três classes de solos, sendo elas: Cambissolo (C), Gleissolo (G) e Organossolo (O). Nos solos coletados, foram avaliadas as seguintes variáveis: potencial de inóculo micorrízico, número de esporos, CMM e análise dos atributos físicos e químicos do solo. A porcentagem de colonização micorrízica da Brachiaria brizantha no ensaio do potencial de inóculo variou de 13,8 a 55,3 % e nenhum padrão foi observado de acordo com a classe de solo. O CMM no solo variou de 10,48 a 44,67 mg g-1. O número de esporos em 100 cm3 de solo variou de 2,4 a 80. Foi observada correlação negativa entre o CMM e a proporção de macroagregados estáveis em água e correlação positiva entre CMM com microagregados. Este trabalho demonstrou que os solos da bacia do rio Itajaí-Açu possuem potencial de inóculo micorrízico suficiente para iniciar a colonização das raízes das plantas em curto período de tempo, o que pode ser importante facilitador no crescimento de espécies arbóreas usadas no processo de recuperação desses ambientes.

Fossil bones and teeth of Late Pleistocene terrestrial mammals from Rhine River gravels (RS) and the North Sea (NS), that have been exposed to chemically and isotopically distinct diagenetic fluids (fresh water versus seawater), were investigated to study the effects of early diagenesis on biogenic apatite. Changes in phosphate oxygen isotopic composition (delta O-18(PO4)), nitrogen content (wt.% N) and rare earth element (REE) concentrations were measured along profiles within bones that have not been completely fossilized, and in skeletal tissues (bone, dentine, enamel) with different susceptibilities to diagenetic alteration. Early diagenetic changes of elemental and isotopic compositions of apatite in fossil bone are related to the loss of the stabilizing collagen matrix. The REE concentration is negatively correlated with the nitrogen content, and therefore the amount of collagen provides a sensitive proxy for early diagenetic alteration. REE patterns of RS and NS bones indicate initial fossilization in a fresh water fluid with similar REE compositions. Bones from both settings have nearly collagen-free, REE-, U-, F- and Sr-enriched altered outer rims, while the collagen-bearing bone compacta in the central part often display early diagenetic pyrite void-fillings. However, NS bones exposed to Holocene seawater have outer rim delta O-18(PO4) values that are 1.1 to 2.6 parts per thousand higher compared to the central part of the same bones (delta O-18(PO4) = 18.2 +/- 0.9 parts per thousand, n = 19). Surprisingly, even the collagen-rich bone compacta with low REE contents and apatite crystallinity seems altered, as NS tooth enamel (delta O-18(PO4) =15.0 +/- 0.3 parts per thousand, n=4) has about 3%. lower delta O-18(PO4) values, values that are also similar to those of enamel from RS teeth. Therefore, REE concentration, N content and apatite crystallinity are in this case only poor proxies for the alteration of delta O-18(PO4) values. Seawater exposure of a few years up to 8 kyr can change the delta O-18(PO4) values of the bone apatite by > 3 parts per thousand. Therefore, bones fossilized in marine settings must be treated with caution for palaeoclimatic reconstructions. However, enamel seems to preserve pristine delta O-18(PO4) values on this time scale. Using species-specific calibrations for modern mammals, a mean delta O-18(H2O) value can be reconstructed for Late Pleistocene mammalian drinking water of around -9.2 +/- 0.5 parts per thousand, which is similar to that of Late Pleistocene groundwater from central Europe. There is much policy interest in the possible linkages that might exist between land use and downstream fluvial flood risk. On the one hand, this position is sustained by observations from plot- and field-scale studies that suggest land management does affect runoff. On the other, upscaling these effects to show that land-management activities impact upon flood risk at larger catchment scales has proved to be elusive. This review considers the reasons for why this upscaling is problematic. We argue that, rather than it reflecting methodological challenges associated with the difficulties of modelling hydrological processes over very large areas and during extreme runoff events, it reflects the fact that any linkage between land management and flood risk cannot be generalized and taken out of its specific spatial (catchment) and temporal (flood event) context. We use Sayer's (1992) notion of a `chaotic conception' to describe the belief that there is a simple and general association between land management and downstream flood risk rather than the impacts of land management being spatially and temporally contingent in relation to the particular geographical location, time period and scale being considered. Our argument has important practical consequences because it implies that land-management activities to reduce downstream flood risk will be different to traditional flood-reduction interventions such as levees. The purpose of demonstration projects then needs careful consideration such that conclusions made for one project are not transferred uncritically to other scales of analysis or geographical locations.

L’objectiu d’aquest projecte ha sigut analitzar la qualitat de l’aigua a la Conca fluvial d’Alinyà i esbrinar quins són els factors que la determinen. Per fer-ho s’han utilitzat els macròfits (mitjançant l’índex IM) com a bioindicadors de la qualitat dels boscos de ribera i de manera indirecta determinar la qualitat de l’aigua. Es conclou que els factors més influents en els resultats són: la maca de diversitat dels macròfits donada l’època de l’any del mostreig (a la tardor), l’augment de les masses forestals homogeneïtzant el paisatge, les fortes pluges d’enguany i la contaminació puntual al nucli urbà d’Alinyà.

The depositional stratigraphy of within-channel deposits in sandy braided rivers is dominated by a variety of barforms (both singular `unit' bars and complex `compound' bars), as well as the infill of individual channels (herein termed `channel fills'). The deposits of bars and channel fills define the key components of facies models for braided rivers and their within-channel heterogeneity, knowledge of which is important for reservoir characterization. However, few studies have sought to address the question of whether the deposits of bars and channel fills can be readily differentiated from each other. This paper presents the first quantitative study to achieve this aim, using aerial images of an evolving modern sandy braided river and geophysical imaging of its subsurface deposits. Aerial photographs taken between 2000 and 2004 document the abandonment and fill of a 1 3 km long, 80 m wide anabranch channel in the sandy braided South Saskatchewan River, Canada. Upstream river regulation traps the majority of very fine sediment and there is little clay (<1%) in the bed sediments. Channel abandonment was initiated by a series of unit bars that stalled and progressively blocked the anabranch entrance, together with dune deposition and stacking at the anabranch entrance and exit. Complete channel abandonment and subsequent fill of up to 3 m of sediment took approximately two years. Thirteen kilometres of ground-penetrating radar surveys, coupled with 18 cores, were obtained over the channel fill and an adjacent 750 m long, 400 m wide, compound bar, enabling a quantitative analysis of the channel and bar deposits. Results show that, in terms of grain-size trends, facies proportions and scale of deposits, there are only subtle differences between the channel fill and bar deposits which, therefore, renders them indistinguishable. Thus, it may be inappropriate to assign different geometric and sedimentological attributes to channel fill and bar facies in object-based models of sandy braided river alluvial architecture.

Este trabajo examina la magnitud y la frecuencia del transporte de sedimento (material disuelto, sedimento en suspensión y carga de fondo) en la cuenca de la riera de Arbúcies (Cordilleras Costeras Catalanas), a partir de los caudales diarios del periodo 1967-1992 y de las muestras de agua y sedimento obtenidas durante los años 1991 y 1992. Los resultados indican que el transporte en disolución es más uniforme en el tiempo que el transporte de material sólido, tanto en suspensión como de fondo. Los cálculos muestran que la carga sólida total depende sobre todo de crecidas frecuentes y de magnitud moderada, correspondientes al nivel de cauce lleno (bankfull). Cabe señalar, en este sentido, que los caudales bankfull suceden el 2,2% del tiempo y transportan el 56% del sedimento en suspensión y el 31% de la carga de fondo total anual. El caudal efectivo para el transporte de sedimento en este río es, por tanto, un suceso relativamente frecuente y de idéntica magnitud al caudal geomorfológicamente dominante o bankfull.

El empleo en hidráulica en lámina libre de las ecuaciones de resistencia al flujo de Gauckler-Manning o Darcy-Weisbach requiere la determinación de un coeficiente de resistencia; determinación que si bien es suficientemente precisa con un reducido esfuerzo y coste en cauces artificiales, resulta mucho más difícil y cara en ríos. Con objeto de eliminar la necesidad de una estimación independiente del coeficiente de resistencia se han desarrollado estadísticamente una serie de ecuaciones para flujo permanente y uniforme en ríos, en las que se prescinde de dicho coeficiente. El presente artículo pretende ser una revisión de las fórmulas de este último tipo más difundidas en la práctica de la hidráulica fluvial.

The high alpine valleys in the Southem Pyrenees are characterised by a many small lakes and ponds. They occur above 2000 m and are said to have been formed by glacial erosion. The sediments in these basins should, therefore, contain s t p tigraphic information since deglaciation, at least. An interesting and may be one of the most important of these basins is Lake Llauset in the Alta Ribagorca. The Llauset basin has recently been developped for hydsopower production. In conection with the construction of the retaining wall at the 'Riegel' the sedimentary filling of the lake basin could be investigated, and the first sedimentological and stratigraphicalresults are presented.
