Angiosperms represent a huge diversity in floral structures. Thus, they provide an attractive target for comparative developmental genetics studies. Research on flower development has focused on few main model plants, and studies on these species have revealed the importance of transcription factors, such as MADS-box and TCP genes, for regulating the floral form. The MADS-box genes determine floral organ identities, whereas the TCP genes are known to regulate flower shape and the number of floral organs. In this study, I have concentrated on these two gene families and their role in regulating flower development in Gerbera hybrida, a species belonging to the large sunflower family (Asteraceae). The Gerbera inflorescence is comprised of hundreds of tightly clustered flowers that differ in their size, shape and function according to their position in the inflorescence. The presence of distinct flower types tells Gerbera apart from the common model species that bear only single kinds of flowers in their inflorescences. The marginally located ray flowers have large bilaterally symmetrical petals and non-functional stamens. The centrally located disc flowers are smaller, have less pronounced bilateral symmetry and carry functional stamens. Early stages of flower development were studied in Gerbera to understand the differentiation of flower types better. After morphological analysis, we compared gene expression between ray and disc flowers to reveal transcriptional differences in flower types. Interestingly, MADS-box genes showed differential expression, suggesting that they might take part in defining flower types by forming flower-type-specific regulatory complexes. Functional analysis of a CYCLOIDEA-like TCP gene GhCYC2 provided evidence that TCP transcription factors are involved in flower type differentiation in Gerbera. The expression of GhCYC2 is ray-flower-specific at early stages of development and activated only later in disc flowers. Overexpression of GhCYC2 in transgenic Gerbera-lines causes disc flowers to obtain ray-flower-like characters, such as elongated petals and disrupted stamen development. The expression pattern and transgenic phenotypes further suggest that GhCYC2 may shape ray flowers by promoting organ fusion. Cooperation of GhCYC2 with other Gerbera CYC-like TCP genes is most likely needed for proper flower type specification, and by this means for shaping the elaborate inflorescence structure. Gerbera flower development was also approached by characterizing B class MADS-box genes, which in the main model plants are known regulators of petal and stamen identity. The four Gerbera B class genes were phylogenetically grouped into three clades; GGLO1 into the PI/GLO clade, GDEF2 and GDEF3 into the euAP3 clade and GDEF1 into the TM6 clade. Putative orthologs for GDEF2 and GDEF3 were identified in other Asteraceae species, which suggests that they appeared through an Asteraceae-specific duplication. Functional analyses indicated that GGLO1 and GDEF2 perform conventional B-function as they determine petal and stamen identities. Our studies on GDEF1 represent the first functional analysis of a TM6-like gene outside the Solanaceae lineage and provide further evidence for the role of TM6 clade members in specifying stamen development. Overall, the Gerbera B class genes showed both commonalities and diversifications with the conventional B-function described in the main model plants.

We report the observation of persistent photoconductivity (PPC) in flower shaped PbS dendrites grown by the hydrothermal method. Potential fluctuations, due to the presence of various confinement regimes in the branches of dendrites, and surface traps, are likely responsible for the PPC observed here. We also observed photocurrent quenching and decreased dark current in the PPC below 40 K, due to the presence of a metastable state, whereas positive PPC was observed in the temperature region 40-220 K. Dark conductivity measurements, time constant parameters obtained from the stretched exponential fittings of PPC, also showed the metastable state related transition around 50 K.

Nanosized hexagonal InN flower-like structures were fabricated by droplet epitaxy on GaN/Si(111) and GaN flower-like nanostructure fabricated directly on Si(111) substrate using radio frequency plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study the crystallinity and morphology of the nanostructures. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL) were used to investigate the chemical compositions and optical properties of nano-flowers, respectively. Activation energy of free exciton transitions in GaN nano-flowers was derived to be similar to 28.5 meV from the temperature dependent PL studies. The formation process of nano-flowers is investigated and a qualitative mechanism is proposed.

Flower development provides a model system to study mechanisms that govern pattern formation in plants. Most flowers consist of four organ types that are present in a specific order from the periphery to the centre of the flower. Reviewed here are studies on flower development in two model species: Arabidopsis thaliana and Antirrhinum majus that focus on the molecular genetic analysis of homeotic mutations affecting pattern formation in the flower. Based on these studies a model was proposed that explains how three classes of regulatory genes can together control the development of the correct pattern of organs in the flower. The universality of the basic tenets of the model is apparent from the analysis of the homologues of the Arabidopsis genes from other plant species

Spatial information at the landscape scale is extremely important for conservation planning, especially in the case of long-ranging vertebrates. The biodiversity-rich Anamalai hill ranges in the Western Ghats of southern India hold a viable population for the long-term conservation of the Asian elephant. Through rapid but extensive field surveys we mapped elephant habitat, corridors, vegetation and land-use patterns, estimated the elephant population density and structure, and assessed elephant-human conflict across this landscape. GIS and remote sensing analyses indicate that elephants are distributed among three blocks over a total area of about 4600 km(2). Approximately 92% remains contiguous because of four corridors; however, under 4000 km2 of this area may be effectively used by elephants. Nine landscape elements were identified, including five natural vegetation types, of which tropical moist deciduous forest is dominant. Population density assessed through the dung count method using line transects covering 275 km of walk across the effective elephant habitat of the landscape yielded a mean density of 1.1 (95% Cl = 0.99-1.2) elephant/km(2). Population structure from direct sighting of elephants showed that adult male elephants constitute just 2.9% and adult females 42.3% of the population with the rest being subadults (27.4%), juveniles (16%) and calves (11.4%). Sex ratios show an increasing skew toward females from juvenile (1:1.8) to sub-adult (1:2.4) and adult (1:14.7) indicating higher mortality of sub-adult and adult males that is most likely due to historical poaching for ivory. A rapid questionnaire survey and secondary data on elephant-human conflict from forest department records reveals that villages in and around the forest divisions on the eastern side of landscape experience higher levels of elephant-human conflict than those on the western side; this seems to relate to a greater degree of habitat fragmentation and percentage farmers cultivating annual crops in the east. We provide several recommendations that could help maintain population viability and reduce elephant-human conflict of the Anamalai elephant landscape. Porous flower-like alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures have been synthesized by ethylene glycol mediated iron alkoxide as an intermediate and studied as an anode material of Li-ion battery. The iron alkoxide precursor is heated at different temperatures from 300 to 700 degrees C. The alpha-Fe2O3 samples possess porosity and high surface area. There is a decrease in pore volume as well as surface area by increasing the preparation temperature. The reversible cycling properties of the alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures have been evaluated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge discharge cycling, and galvanostatic intermittent titration measurements at ambient temperature. The initial discharge capacity values of 1063, 1168,1183, 1152 and 968 mAh g(-1) at a specific current of 50 mA g(-1) are obtained for the samples prepared at 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 degrees C, respectively. The samples prepared at 500 and 600 degrees C exhibit good cycling performance with high rate capability. The high rate capacity is attributed to porous nature of the materials. As the iron oxides are inexpensive and environmental friendly, the alpha-Fe2O3 has potential application as anode material for rechargeable Li batteries. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the present study, a microwave-assisted, solution-based route has been employed to obtain porous CoO nano structures. Detailed characterization reveals that the flower-like nanostructures comprise petal-like sheets, each of which is made of an ordered, porous arrangement of crystallites of CoO measuring about 6 nm. TEM analysis shows that each ``petal'' is an oriented aggregate of CoO nanocrystals, such aggregation promoted by the hydroxyl moieties derived from the solution. The structure provides a large specific area as well as the porosity desirable in electrodes in Li-ion batteries. Electrochemical measurements carried out on electrodes made of nanostructured CoO show excellent Li ion-storing capability. A specific capacitance of 779 mAh g(-1) has been measured at a specific current of 100 mA g(-1). Measurements show also excellent cyclability and coulombic efficiency. Impedance spectroscopy provides evidence for charge transfer occurring in the porous networks. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In nursery pollination mutualisms, which are usually obligate interactions, olfactory attraction of pollinators by floral volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is the main step in guaranteeing partner encounter. However, mechanisms ensuring the evolutionary stability of dioecious fig-pollinator mutualisms, in which female fig trees engage in pollination by deceit resulting in zero reproductive success of pollinators that visit them, are poorly understood. In dioecious figs, individuals of each sex should be selected to produce odours that their pollinating wasps cannot distinguish, especially since pollinators have usually only one choice of a nursery during their lifetime. To test the hypothesis of intersexual chemical mimicry, VOCs emitted by pollen-receptive figs of seven dioecious species were compared using headspace collection and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. First, fig-flower scents varied significantly among species, allowing host-species recognition. Second, in species in which male and female figs are synchronous, intersexual VOC variation was not significant. However, in species where figs of both sexes flower asynchronously, intersexual variation of VOCs was detectable. Finally, with one exception, there was no sexual dimorphism in scent quantity. We show that there are two ways to use scent to be a dioecious fig based on differences in flowering synchrony between the sexes.

This paper presents the Hill instability analysis of Tension Leg Platform (TLP) tether it, deep sea. The 2-D nonlinear beam model which is Undergoing Coupled axial and transverse vibrations, is applied. The governing equations are reduced to nonlinear Hill equation by use of the Galerkin's method and the modes superposition principle. The Hill instability charted Lip to large parameters is obtained. An important parameter M is defined and can he expressed as the functions of tether length, the platform surge and heave motion amplitudes. Some example studies are performed for various environmental conditions. The results demonstrate that the nonlinear coupling between the axial and transverse vibrations has a significant effect on the response of structure.. It needs to be considered for the accurate dynamic analysis of long TLP tether subjected to the combined platform surge and heave motions.

The Flower Garden Banks are topographic features on the edge of the continental shelf in the northwest Gulf of Mexico. These banks are approximately 175 km southeast of Galveston, Texas at 28° north latitude and support the northernmost coral reefs on the North American continental shelf. The East and West Flower Garden Banks (EFG and WFG) and Stetson Bank, a smaller sandstone bank approximately 110 km offshore, are managed and protected as the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS). As part of a region-wide initiative to assess coral reef condition, the benthic and fish communities of the EFG and WFG were assessed using the Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment (AGRRA) protocol. The AGRRA survey was conducted during a week-long cruise in August 1999 that was jointly sponsored by the FGBNMS and the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF). A total of 25 coral transects, 132 algal quadrats, 24 fish transects, and 26 Roving Diver (REEF) surveys were conducted. These surveys revealed reefs with high coral cover, dominated by large, healthy corals, little macroalgae, and healthy fish populations. The percent live coral cover was 53.9 and 48.8 at the WFG and EFG, respectively, and the average colony diameter was 93 and 81 cm. Fish diversity was lower than most Caribbean reefs, but large abundances and size of many species reflected the low fishing pressure on the banks. The benthic and fish assemblages at the EFG and WFG were similar. Due to its near pristine conditions, the FGB data will prove to be a valuable component in the AGRRA database and its resulting scale of reef condition for the region. (PDF contains 22 pages.)
