Nitric oxide (NO), produced by endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), is a potent vasodilator and plays a prominent role in regulating the cardiovascular system. Decreased basal NO release may predispose to cardiovascular diseases. Evidence suggests that the 27 nt repeat polymorphism of the intron 4 in the eNOS gene may regulate eNOS expression. On the other hand, some recent reports strongly suggest an association between methylmercury (MeHg) exposures and altered NO synthesis. In the present study, we investigate the contribution of the 27-pb tandem repeat polymorphism on nitric oxide production, which could enhance susceptibility to cardiovascular disease in the MeHg-exposed study population. Two-hundred-two participants (98 men and 104 women), all chronically exposed to MeHg through fish consumption were examined. Mean blood Hg concentration and nitrite plasma concentration were 50.5 +/- 35.4 mu g/L and 251.4 +/- 106.3 nM, respectively. Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 120.1 +/- 19.4 mm Hg and 72.0 +/- 10.6 mm Hg, respectively. Mean body mass index was 24.5 +/- 4.3 kg/m(2) and the mean heart rate was 69.8 +/- 11.8 bpm. There were no significant differences in age, arterial blood pressure, body mass index or cardiac frequency between genotype groups (all P>0.05). However, we observed different nitrite concentrations in the genotypes groups, with lower nitrite levels for the 4a4a genotype carriers. Age, gender and the presence of intron 4 polymorphism contributed to nitrite reduction as a result of blood Hg concentration. Taken together, our results show that the 27 nt repeat polymorphism of the intron 4 in the eNOS gene increases susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases after MeHg exposure by modulating nitric oxide levels. Over the last decades, the presence of methylmercury (MeHg) in the Amazon region of Brazil and its adverse human health effects have given rise to much concern. The biotransformation of MeHg occurs mainly through glutathione (GSH) in the bile mediated by conjugation with glutathione S-transferases (GST). Epidemiological evidence has shown that genetic polymorphisms may affect the metabolism of MeHg. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between GST polymorphisms, GSH, and Hg levels in blood (B-Hg) and in hair (H-Hg) of an Amazon population chronically exposed to the metal through fish consumption. Blood and hair samples were collected from 144 volunteers (71 men, 73 women). B-Hg and H-Hg levels were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and GSH levels were evaluated by a spectrophotometric method. GSTM1 and T1 genotyping evaluation were carried out by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Mean levels of B-Hg and H-Hg were 37.7 +/- 24.5 mu g/L and 10.4 +/- 7.4 mu g/g, respectively; GSH concentrations ranged from 0.52 to 2.89 mu M/ml of total blood. Distributions for GSTM1/T1, GSTM1/GSTT1*0, GSTM1*0/T1, and GSTM1*0/GSTT1*0 genotypes were 35.4, 22.2, 25.0, and 17.4%, respectively. GSTT1 genotype carriers presented lower levels of B-Hg and H-Hg when compared to other genotypes carriers. In addition, GSTM1*0/GSTT1*0 individuals presented higher Hg levels in blood and hair than subjects presenting any other genotypes. There appeared to be no evidence of an effect of polymorphisms on GSH levels. Therefore, our data suggest that GST polymorphisms may be associated with MeHg detoxification.

Small pumpkinseed sunfish ( Lepomis gibbosus), were found to be capable of removing the spine of Bythotrephes longimanus, an invasive cladoceran. Because fish consumption may be important in the dispersal or control of Bythotrephes, aquarium feeding experiments were conducted to 1) establish if the spine removal behavior of the pumpkinseeds was locally unique; 2) quantify how frequently pumpkinseeds exhibit the behavior; 3) determine if pumpkinseed handle Bythotrephes more quickly than other species of fish; and 4) verify if Bythotrephes' resting eggs pass through the digestive systems of pumpkinseeds in viable condition. The experiments revealed that pumpkinseeds (45-70 mm TL) from two geographic regions were more successful (100%) at removing Bythotrephes' spine, and handled Bythotrephes more quickly than yellow perch (Perca flavescens) (49-57 mm TL) and smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) (50-57mm TL) used in the study. Of 244 live Bythotrephes' resting eggs fed to the pumpkinseeds, 104 (42.6%) passed through their digestive systems. From those eggs, only 10 successfully hatched. Preliminary enclosure experiments were carried out and indicated that pumpkinseeds will consume Bythotrephes in natural settings. These findings provide new evidence that certain fish, with specialized morphology for prey manipulation, have the ability to influence the distribution and establishment of Bythotrephes.

Colombia is one of the largest per capita mercury polluters in the world as a consequence of its artisanal gold mining activities. The severity of this problem in terms of potential health effects was evaluated by means of a probabilistic risk assessment carried out in the twelve departments (or provinces) in Colombia with the largest gold production. The two exposure pathways included in the risk assessment were inhalation of elemental Hg vapors and ingestion of fish contaminated with methyl mercury. Exposure parameters for the adult population (especially rates of fish consumption) were obtained from nation-wide surveys and concentrations of Hg in air and of methyl-mercury in fish were gathered from previous scientific studies. Fish consumption varied between departments and ranged from 0 to 0.3 kg d?1. Average concentrations of total mercury in fish (70 data) ranged from 0.026 to 3.3 lg g?1. A total of 550 individual measurements of Hg in workshop air (ranging from menor queDL to 1 mg m?3) and 261 measurements of Hg in outdoor air (ranging from menor queDL to 0.652 mg m?3) were used to generate the probability distributions used as concentration terms in the calculation of risk. All but two of the distributions of Hazard Quotients (HQ) associated with ingestion of Hg-contaminated fish for the twelve regions evaluated presented median values higher than the threshold value of 1 and the 95th percentiles ranged from 4 to 90. In the case of exposure to Hg vapors, minimum values of HQ for the general population exceeded 1 in all the towns included in this study, and the HQs for miner-smelters burning the amalgam is two orders of magnitude higher, reaching values of 200 for the 95th percentile. Even acknowledging the conservative assumptions included in the risk assessment and the uncertainties associated with it, its results clearly reveal the exorbitant levels of risk endured not only by miner-smelters but also by the general population of artisanal gold mining communities in Colombia.

Beyond its importance in maintaining ecosystems, sharks provide services that play important socioeconomic roles. The rise in their exploitation as a tourism resource in recent years has highlighted economic potential of non-destructive uses of sharks and the extent of economic losses associated to declines in their population. In this work, we present estimates for use value of sharks in Fernando de Noronha Island - the only ecotouristic site offering shark diving experience in the Atlantic coast of South America. Through the Travel Cost Method we estimate the total touristic use value aggregated to Noronha Island by the travel cost was up to USD 312 million annually, of which USD 91.1 million are transferred to the local economy. Interviewing people from five different economic sectors, we show shark-diving contribute with USD 2.5 million per year to Noronha’s economy, representing 19% of the island’s GDP. Shark-diving provides USD 128.5 thousand of income to employed islanders, USD 72.6 thousand to government in taxes and USD 5.3 thousand to fishers due to the increase in fish consumption demanded by shark divers. We discover, though, that fishers who actually are still involved in shark fishing earn more by catching sharks than selling other fish for consumption by shark divers. We conclude, however, that the non-consumptive use of sharks is most likely to benefit large number of people by generating and money flow if compared to the shark fishing, providing economic arguments to promote the conservation of these species.

Background: In 2013, the Revised Dietary Goals for Scotland (SDGs) were published to “indicate the direction of travel, and assist policy development to reduce the burden of obesity and diet-related disease in Scotland”. They include recommendations for foods (fruit and vegetables, oily fish and red meat) and nutrients (energy, energy density, total fat, saturated fat, trans fatty acids, sugar, salt and fibre). Progress towards the SDGs is monitored using a combination of surveys, principally the secondary analysis of the Living Costs and Food Survey (LCFS). Objective: To obtain estimates of food consumption and nutrient intake for Scotland using LCFS data from 2001 to 2013. Results: For SDGs measured using LCFS data there was little progress towards meeting the goals between 2001 and 2013. This was apparent even amongst least deprived households. Despite evidence of progress for fruit and vegetables up to 2010, consumption subsequently dropped; and there was no change in oil rich fish consumption. Mean total red meat consumption meets the SDG and a significant reduction was found between 2001 and 2013, which was partly accounted for by a fall in red meat products such as sausages and burgers. Energy density increased significantly over time despite a dip in 2012. Saturated fat, total fat and sugar intakes remained considerably higher than the SDGs. Overall there were small but significant decreases in the percentage of food energy from saturated fat and sugars, although intakes appear to have risen since 2011. There was no change in fibre intake. Conclusion: The results presented support work by Food Standards Scotland and the Scottish Government to facilitate improvements to the diet to help prevent obesity. Whilst some very small improvements were observed however, new approaches are required to encourage the population towards a healthier diet to secure Scotland’s health in the future. O consumo de pescado no Brasil cresceu 40% nos últimos 7 anos passando de 6,46 para 9,03 kg/habitante/ano, valor que se aproxima do recomendado pela Organização Mundial de Saúde. A razão está relacionada com a subutilização de determinadas espécies e a falta de diversificação da indústria processadora para a produção de alimentos com maior valor agregado. Considerando o esgotamento de determinadas espécies com a utilização da sobrepesca, é possível o emprego da anchoita na forma de conservas através da utilização de meios de cobertura como molho de tomate e óleo comestível. Este trabalho teve como objetivo elaborar conservas de anchoita (Engraulis anchoita) com a utilização de 2 meios de cobertura: molho de tomate e óleo de girassol, submetidas a tempos de salmouragem diferenciados, 2 e 5 min e com o emprego ou não de pré-cozimento. De acordo com os padrões estabelecidos, as amostras de pescado fresco utilizadas para a execução dos enlatados apresentaram resultados físico químicos adequados comprovando o frescor do pescado envolvido no processo, ou sejam: 16,29 mg/100 g amostra para N-BVT, 7,90 mg/100 g amostra para N-TMA e pH 6,5. As conservas em molho de tomate submetidas a operação de salmouragem durante 2 min, com e sem pré-cozimento apresentaram, respectivamente, 16,57 e 16,24% proteínas, 3,94 e 4,66% lipídios, 73,0 e 73,28% umidade, 3,22 e 3,67% cinzas, 0,17 e 0,19% de cloretos (NaCl). As conservas com molho de tomate, utilizando anchoita eviscerada salmourada por 5 min, com e sem pré-cozimento, apresentaram respectivamente, 15,94 e 15,31% proteínas, 3,15 e 4,90 lipídios%, 73,70 e 73,98% umidade, 3,80 e 4,10% cinzas, 0,21 e 0,24% cloretos (NaCl). Para as conservas de anchoita em óleo de girassol, utilizando tempo de salmouragem de 2 min, com e sem pré-cozimento, apresentaram 16,97 e 16,76% proteínas, 7,68 e 5,70% lipídios, 65,87 e 68,74% umidade, 3,16 e 3,28% cinzas, 0,10 e 0,12% cloretos (NaCl), respectivamente. As conservas utilizando o pescado previamente submetido a salmouragem por 5 min e posteriormente enlatado com a adição de óleo de girassol, com e sem pré-cozimento apresentaram respectivamente, 15,97 e 15,89% proteínas, 7,91 e 5,19% lipídios, 66,26 e 68,23% umidade, 3,78 e 3,87% cinzas, 0,13 e 0,21% NaCl. As análises microbiológicas das conservas submetidas aos diferentes tratamentos mostraram ausência de Salmonella spp, Staphylococcus coagulase positiva e Clostridium sulfito-redutor, resultados estes, de acordo com o estabelecido pela legislação higiênico-sanitária brasileira. Nos testes de esterilidade comercial não foram constatadas alterações visíveis nos enlatados submetidos a incubação por 5 dias a 36 ± 1°C (determinação de micro-organismos aeróbios viáveis) e a 7-10 dias a 55 ± 1°C (termófilos). Considerando as quantidades de pescado enlatado (80, 90 e 100g), o rendimento para todas as amostras apresentaram, no mínimo, 50% de pescado em relação ao peso líquido. A avaliação sensorial realizada por teste de ordenação para a avaliação da preferência não apresentou diferenças significativas entre as amostras.

Fisheries support livelihoods but are threatened by climate variability and change which intensified since the 1970s. This study used quantitative and qualitative methods to determine the extent to which fishers around Lake Wamala in Uganda were copying with perceived changes in climate variables and the impacts on their livelihoods, to generate knowledge to enable the fishers increase resilience and sustain their livelihoods. Fishers were aware of changes in climate manifested by unpredictable seasons, floods and droughts. Fishing was the main livelihood activity. The African catfish had replaced Nile tilapia as the dominant fish species. There was damage and loss of gear, boats, landing sites and lives, and changes in fish catches and sizes, income and fish consumption during the perceived floods and droughts. The fishers adapted to the changes through increasing time on fishing grounds and changing target species and fishing gears but innovative ones diversified to high value crops and livestock which increased their income beyond what was earned from fishing thus acting as an incentive for some of them to quit fishing. Diversification to non-fishery activities as a form of adaptation was enhanced by membership to social groups, weekly fishing days, fishing experience and age of fishers but its benefits were not equally shared among men and women. Mitigation measures included planting trees, mulching gardens and protecting wetlands. Adaptation and mitigation measures were constrained by limited credit, awareness and land. The required interventions included improving access to credit, irrigation facilities and appropriate planting materials and raising awareness. The study showed that the fishers were aware of changes in climatic variables and the impacts on their livelihoods. There were also adaptation and mitigation measures practiced by the fishers which if promoted and their constraints addressed, could increase resilience of fishers to climatic change and sustain their livelihoods.

O pescado é considerado um alimento de grande valor nutricional presente na dieta, devido a sua elevada qualidade proteica. O consumo desta importante fonte proteica ainda não faz parte da rotina da população brasileira. Para tanto, o governo busca alternativas para mudança desta realidade. O desenvolvimento e introdução de produtos a base de pescado na merenda escolar vem sendo indicados como uma solução estratégica para inserir este alimento na dieta da população. Nesse sentido, este trabalho teve por objetivo elaborar produto a base de anchoita (Engraulis anchoita) e verificar sua aceitação junto à rede pública de ensino, visando um futuro aumento do consumo de pescado. A matériaprima utilizada foi à espécie anchoita (Engraulis anchoita), capturada através de cruzeiros realizados pelo navio oceanográfico Atlântico Sul, da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG). O desenvolvimento do trabalho gerou três artigos. O primeiro artigo intitulou-se “Elaboração de almôndegas utilizando como matéria-prima anchoita (Engraulis anchoita)”. O objetivo do trabalho foi formular almôndegas à base de carne de pescado (Engraulis anchoita) e caracteriza-las quanto à composição proximal e aminoacídica. Foi verificado que em torno de 160 gramas do produto elaborado atende às necessidades aminoacídicas estipuladas pela FAO, para um adulto. Os resultados indicaram que o produto elaborado está de acordo com padrão de identidade estabelecido pela legislação brasileira. No segundo artigo “Capacitação de merendeiras na elaboração de produtos de pescado” o objetivo foi promover a capacitação de merendeiras na elaboração de produtos de pescado. Uma análise sobre comportamento, intenção do comportamento e atitude frente ao consumo de pescado, foi realizada. Além disso, também foi realizada uma avaliação sobre a percepção cognitiva das merendeiras em relação a segurança alimentar, antes e após o treinamento. Com relação ao comportamento, os resultados demonstraram que a população estudada apresentou a intenção de comer pescado, no entanto, não apresentou o comportamento de consumo. Os resultados de avaliação cognitiva e segurança alimentar demonstraram que o desenvolvimento do curso foi satisfatório, uma vez que novas percepções e conhecimentos sobre segurança alimentar foram adquiridos pelas merendeiras. O terceiro artigo “Respostas hedônicas e associação de palavras para melhor compreensão da aceitação de produtos de pescado na merenda escolar” teve como objetivo avaliar a aceitação de almôndega de pescado (Engraulis anchoita) junto à merenda escolar de uma escola da rede pública de ensino. Os resultados demonstraram que a idade e aceitação obedecem a uma relação inversa na aceitação de produtos de pescado. A avaliação cognitiva possibilitou identificar que as percepções que melhor explicam a aceitação das almôndegas de pescado pelos escolares estão relacionadas com os atributos hedônicos e sensoriais do produto. Em suma, o desenvolvimento dessa dissertação demonstrou que a elaboração de almôndegas de pescado (Engraulis anchoita) destinadas à merenda escolar surge como uma importante ferramenta para impulsionar a inserção do pescado na merenda escolar e contribuir para uma educação alimentar quanto ao consumo de pescado.

Anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita) é uma espécie pelágica encontrada no Sudoeste do Oceano Atlântico. Estima-se que 135000 toneladas/ano desse peixe possam ser exploradas ao longo do litoral sul do Brasil. Entretanto, os recursos pesqueiros do país são ainda inexplorados, o que torna esta matéria prima candidata em potencial para a fabricação de novos produtos a base desse pescado. Com o apoio de programas governamentais sociais, a tendência para o Brasil é para o desenvolvimento de produtos de anchoíta alternativos e que sejam capazes de suprir as necessidades específicas de cada grupo de consumo alvo. Dentro desse cenário, um estudo de novos produtos de pescado frente ao mercado se faz necessário, na tentativa de compreender as variáveis influentes do setor. Para tanto, na presente tese teve objetivou-se desenvolver produtos à base de anchoíta e estudar o comportamento do mercado consumidor frente a esses novos produtos de pescado. Um total de seis artigos foi gerado. O primeiro artigo intitulou-se: “Potencial de inserção de empanados de pescado na merenda escolar mediante determinantes individuais”. Neste objetivou-se detectar os determinantes individuais do consumo de pescado com adolescentes em idade de 12 a 17 anos, visando à inserção de empanados de pescado na merenda escolar. Foi verificado que as variáveis que melhor discriminaram a frequência de consumo foram “gosta de pescado” e “grau de escolaridade dos pais”. Os resultados indicaram um potencial de consumo de empanados de pescado por adolescentes, associado à necessidade de educação alimentar. O segundo artigo “Elaboração de hambúrguer a partir de base proteica de anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita)” no qual se objetivou avaliar o efeito de diferentes combinações de solventes para a obtenção de base proteica de anchoíta visando à elaboração de hambúrguer de pescado. As lavagens com ácido fosfórico e mais dois ciclos de água foram as que apresentaram os melhores valores para a obtenção da base proteica, baseando-se na remoção de nitrogenados e respostas sensoriais. No terceiro artigo “Aceitação de empanados de pescado (Engraulis anchoita) na merenda escolar no extremo sul do Brasil” o objetivo foi avaliar a aceitação de empanados de pescado (Engraulis anchoita) com alunos (n = 830) da rede pública de ensino, em idades entre 5 e 18 anos, de duas cidades do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Os resultados indicaram relação inversa entre a aceitação de empanados de pescado e o aumento da idade das crianças. O quarto artigo estudou “Razões subjacentes ao baixo consumo de pescado pelo consumidor brasileiro.” Neste objetivou-se investigar o comportamento referente ao consumo de pescado de uma população com baixo consumo de pescado (Brasil), aplicando a Teoria do Comportamento Planejado (TCP). Os resultados indicaram que tanto a intenção como a atitude provou serem determinantes significativos na frequência de comer pescado, sendo a atitude inversamente correlacionada com o consumo de pescado. Hábito apareceu como uma importante variável discriminante para o consumo de pescado. O quinto artigo intitula-se “Modelagem de equações estruturais e associação de palavras como ferramentas para melhor compreensão do baixo consumo de pescado”. O objetivo foi desenvolver um modelo e explicar o conjunto das relações entre os construtos do consumo de pescado em uma população com baixo consumo de pescado (Brasil) através da aplicação da TCP e pelo Questionário das Escolhas dos Alimentos. Além disso, a percepção cognitiva de produtos de pescado (Engraulis anchoíta) foi avaliada pela mesma população. Os resultados indicaram um bom ajuste para o modelo proposto e mostraram que os construtos “saúde” e “controle de peso” são bons preditores da intenção. A técnica associação de palavras provou ser um método útil para a análise de percepção de um novo produto de pescado, além de ajudar a explicar os resultados obtidos pelas equações estruturais. O sexto e último artigo “Percepção de saudável em produtos de pescado em uma população com alto consumo de pescado. Uma investigação por eye tracking” em que se objetivou explorar o uso do método eye tracking para estudar a percepção de saudável em diferentes produtos de pescado. Dois pontos importantes podem ser salientados como influentes na percepção de saudável: produtos de pescado processados e alimentos fritos.

The fish meat has a particular chemical composition which gives its high nutritional value. However, this food is identified for being highly perishable and this aspect is often named as a barrier to fish consumption. The southwestern Paraná region, parallel to the country's reality, it is characterized by low fish consumption; and one of the strategies aimed at increasing the consumption of this important protein source is encouraging the production of other species besides tilapia. Within this context, it is necessary to know about the meat characteristics. In this sense, the objective of this study was to evaluate the technological potential of pacu, grass carp and catfish species. To do so, at first, it was discussed the chemical and biometric assessment under two distinct descriptive statistical methods, of the three species; and it was also evaluated the discriminating capacity of the study. In a second moment, an evaluation of effects done by two different processes of washing (acid and alkaline) regarding the removal of nitrogen compounds, pigments and the emulsifying ability of the proteins contained in the protein base obtained. Finally, in the third phase, it was aimed to realize the methodology optimization in GC-MS for the analysis geosmin and MIB (2-metilisoborneol) compounds that are responsible for taste/smell of soil and mold in freshwater fish. The results showed a high protein and low lipid content for the three species. The comparison between means and medians revealed symmetry only for protein values and biometric measurements. Lipids, when evaluated only by the means, overestimate the levels for all species. Correlations between body measurements and fillet yield had low correlation, regardless of the species analyzed, and the best prediction equation relates the total weight and fillet weight. The biometric variables were the best discriminating among the species. The evaluation of the washings, it was found that the acidic and basic processes were equally (p ≥ 0.05) efficient (p ≤ 0.05) for the removal of nitrogen compounds on the fish pulps. Regarding the extraction of pigments, a removal efficiency was recorded only for the pacu species, the data were assessed by the parameters L *, a *, b *. When evaluated by the total color difference (ΔE) before and after washing for both processes (acid/alkaline) the ΔE proved feasible perceived by naked eye for all species. The catfish was characterized as the fish that presents the clearest meat with the basic washing considered the most effective in removing pigments for this species. Protein bases obtained by alkaline washes have higher emulsifying capacity (p ≤ 0.05) when compared to unwashed and washed in acid process pulps. The methodology applied for the quantification of MIB and geosmin, allowed to establish that the method of extraction and purification of analytes had low recovery and future studies should be developed for identification and quantification of MIB and geosmin on fish samples.

This report considers the development of environmental quality standards (EQSs) for the salmonid fishery, cyprinid fishery, migratory fishery, commercial harvesting of marine fish for public consumption and commercial harvesting of shellfish for public consumption uses of controlled surface waters. Previous reports have been used to identify those parameters necessary for the maintenance of these five uses. Each water use is considered in a separate section within which identified parameters are discussed and standards proposed, a summary of the proposed standards is presented at the beginning of the relevant section. For salmonid, cyprinid and migratory fisheries, EQSs for substances in water have been proposed for the protection of these fisheries. For the commercial harvesting of marine fish and shellfish for public consumption uses 'Warning Levels' of substances in waters have been proposed. These 'Warning Levels' have been proposed by considering data on bioaccumulation and food standards and aim to prevent acceptable intake values and concentrations in fish/shellfish flesh exceeding statutory or recommended levels. For the commercial harvesting of marine fish for public consumption it has been concluded that the current EQSs for most List II substances for the protection of salt water life should be adequately stringent to protect this use, however for the commercial harvesting of shellfish for public consumption, these List II EQSs do not appear adequate to protect this use and more stringent 'Warning Levels' have been proposed. For all five uses considered in this report there has been found to be limited information on a number of the parameters considered and in general for indigenous species, this has been found to be especially so when considering migratory fisheries and the commercial harvesting of marine fish and shellfish.

An empirical model relating food requirements to morphometric indices of metabolic rate was used to calculate consumption/biomass ratios (Q/B) for 16 species of fish that make the pelagic fish community in Lake Malawi/Niassa. The Q/B/year varied from 3.31 to 9.82, with the large catfish (Dinotopterus nyasensis) having the lowest and a small cyprinid (Engraulicypris sardella) having the highest Q/B ratio. Direct estimates of Q/B for four of the most abundant species, based on analysis of diel feeding patterns, ranged from 4.20 to 24.70; the extreme values in this range representing replicate studies on the same species, the predatory cichlid Rhamphochromis longiceps. Previous studies that indicated exceptionally low Q/B ratios (1.0) in pelagic cichlids from Lake Malawi are not supported by this more recent work.
