We present here a detailed study of the complex relationship between the electromagnetic near-field and far-field responses of "real" nanostructured metallic surfaces. The near-field and far-field responses are specified in terms of (spectra of) the surface-enhanced Raman-scattering enhancement factor (SERS EF) and optical extinction, respectively. First, it is shown that gold nanorod- and nanotube-array substrates exhibit three distinct localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs): a longitudinal, a transverse, and a cavity mode. The cavity mode simultaneously has the largest impact on the near-field behavior (as observed through the SERS EF) and the weakest optical interaction: It has a "near-field-type" character. The transverse and longitudinal modes have a significant impact on the far-field behavior but very little impact on SERS: They have a "far-field-type" character. We confirm the presence of the cavity mode using a combination of SERS EF spectra, electron microscopy, and electromagnetic modeling and thus clearly illustrate and explain the (lack of) correlation between the SERS EF spectra and the optical response in terms of the contrasting character of the three LSPRs. In doing so, we experimentally demonstrate that, for a surface that supports multiple LSPRs, the near-field and far-field properties can in fact be tuned almost independently. It is further demonstrated that small changes in geometrical parameters that tune the spectral location of the LPSRs can also drastically influence the character of these modes, resulting in certain unusual behavior, such as the far-field resonance redshift as the near-field resonance blueshifts. A new strategy for remote reconfiguration of an antenna array far field radiation pattern is described. The scheme uses a pilot tone co-transmitted with a carrier signal from a location distant from that of a receive antenna array whose far field pattern is to be reconfigured. By mixing the co-transmitted signals locally at each antenna element in the array an IF signal is formed which defines an equivalent array spacing that can be made variable by tuning the frequency of the pilot tone with respect to the RF carrier. This makes the antenna array factor hence far field spatial characteristic reconfigurable on receive. For a 10 x 1 microstrip patch element array we show that the receive pattern can be made to vary from 35 to 10 degrees half power beam width as the difference frequency between the pilot and the carrier at 2.45 GHz varies between 10 MHz and 500 MHz carrier.

A generalized asymptotic expansion in the far field for the problem of cylindrical wave reflection at a homogeneous impedance plane is derived. The expansion is shown to be uniformly valid over all angles of incidence and values of surface impedance, including the limiting cases of zero and infinite impedance. The technique used is a rigorous application of the modified steepest descent method of Ot

We describe a systematic investigation by the discrete dipole approximation on the optical properties of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanocubes as a function of the edge length in the 20-100 nm range. Our results showed that, as the nanocube size increased, the plasmon resonance modes shifted to higher wavelengths, the contribution from scattering to the extinction increased, and the quadrupole modes became more intense in the spectra. The electric field amplitudes at the surface of the nanocubes were calculated considering 514, 633 and 785 nm as the excitation wavelengths. While Ag nanocubes displayed the highest electric field amplitudes (vertical bar E vertical bar(max)) when excited at 514 nm, the Au nanocubes displayed higher vertical bar E vertical bar(max) values than Ag, for all sizes investigated, when the excitation wavelength was either 633 or 785 nm. The variations in vertical bar E vertical bar(max) as a function of size for both Ag and Au nanocubes could be explained based on the relative position of the surface plasmon resonance peak relative to the wavelength of the incoming electromagnetic wave. Our results show that not only size and composition, but also the excitation wavelength, can play an important role over the maximum near-field amplitudes values generated at the surface of the nanocubes.

Despite favourable gravitational instability and ridge-push, elastic and frictional forces prevent subduction initiation fromarising spontaneously at passive margins. Here,we argue that forces arising fromlarge continental topographic gradients are required to initiate subduction at passivemargins. In order to test this hypothesis,we use 2Dnumerical models to assess the influence of the Andean Plateau on stressmagnitudes and deformation patterns at the Brazilian passive margin. The numerical results indicate that “plateau-push” in this region is a necessary additional force to initiate subduction. As the SE Brazilianmargin currently shows no signs of self-sustained subduction, we examined geological and geophysical data to determine if themargin is in the preliminary stages of subduction initiation. The compiled data indicate that the margin is presently undergoing tectonic inversion, which we infer as part of the continental–oceanic overthrusting stage of subduction initiation. We refer to this early subduction stage as the “Brazilian Stage”, which is characterized by N10 kmdeep reverse fault seismicity at themargin, recent topographic uplift on the continental side, thick continental crust at themargin, and bulging on the oceanic side due to loading by the overthrusting continent. The combined results of the numerical simulations and passivemargin analysis indicate that the SE Brazilian margin is a prototype candidate for subduction initiation.

A method to reduce truncation errors in near-field antenna measurements is presented. The method is based on the Gerchberg-Papoulis iterative algorithm used to extrapolate band-limited functions and it is able to extend the valid region of the calculated far-field pattern up to the whole forward hemisphere. The extension of the valid region is achieved by the iterative application of a transformation between two different domains. After each transformation, a filtering process that is based on known information at each domain is applied. The first domain is the spectral domain in which the plane wave spectrum (PWS) is reliable only within a known region. The second domain is the field distribution over the antenna under test (AUT) plane in which the desired field is assumed to be concentrated on the antenna aperture. The method can be applied to any scanning geometry, but in this paper, only the planar, cylindrical, and partial spherical near-field measurements are considered. Several simulation and measurement examples are presented to verify the effectiveness of the method.
