A group is termed parafree if it is residually nilpotent and has the same nilpotent quotients as a given free group. Since free groups are residually nilpotent, they are parafree. Nonfree parafree groups abound and they all have many properties in common with free groups. Finitely presented parafree groups have solvable word problems, but little is known about the conjugacy and isomorphism problems. The conjugacy problem plays an important part in determining whether an automorphism is inner, which we term the inner automorphism problem. We will attack these and other problems about parafree groups experimentally, in a series of papers, of which this is the first and which is concerned with the isomorphism problem. The approach that we take here is to distinguish some parafree groups by computing the number of epimorphisms onto selected finite groups. It turns out, rather unexpectedly, that an understanding of the quotients of certain groups leads to some new results about equations in free and relatively free groups. We touch on this only lightly here but will discuss this in more depth in a future paper.

We define generalized cluster states based on finite group algebras in analogy to the generalization of the toric code to the Kitaev quantum double models. We do this by showing a general correspondence between systems with CSS structure and finite group algebras, and applying this to the cluster states to derive their generalization. We then investigate properties of these states including their projected entangled pair state representations, global symmetries, and relationship to the Kitaev quantum double models. We also discuss possible applications of these states.

Treatment of morphine in aqueous HCl at 70° with KIO3 yields a monochloromorphine, identified as 1-chloromorphine by spectroscopic means and by the fact that it, and its methyl ether 1-chlorocodeine, are different from 2-chloromorphine and 2-chlorocodeine prepared from 2-aminomorphine of unequivocally established structure. Formation of 1-chloromorphine and the previously known 1-bromomorphine involves entry of the halogen into the position meta to the free phenolic hydroxyl. Possible mechanistic interpretations of this unusual orientation are discussed.

Using the method of infinitesimal transformations, a 6-parameter family of exact solutions describing nonlinear sheared flows with a free surface are found. These solutions are a hybrid between the earlier self-propagating simple wave solutions of Freeman, and decaying solutions of Sachdev. Simple wave solutions are also derived via the method of infinitesimal transformations. Incomplete beta functions seem to characterize these (nonlinear) sheared flows in the absence of critical levels.

1-Deoxythioglyconojirimycins were synthesized by using a protecting group-free strategy, starting from readily available carbohydrates, in good overall yield. Use of benzyl-triethylammonium tetrathiomolybdate, BnEt3N](2)MoS4, as a sulfur transfer reagent and borohydride exchange resin (BER) reduction of a lactone enabled the efficient synthesis of the title compounds.

The average time tau(r) for one end of a long, self-avoiding polymer to interact for the first time with a flat penetrable surface to which it is attached at the other end is shown here to scale essentially as the square of the chain's contour length N. This result is obtained within the framework of the Wilemski-Fixman approximation to diffusion-limited reactions, in which the reaction time is expressed as a time correlation function of a ``sink'' term. In the present work, this sink-sink correlation function is calculated using perturbation expansions in the excluded volume and the polymer-surface interactions, with renormalization group methods being used to resum the expansion into a power law form. The quadratic dependence of tau(r) on N mirrors the behavior of the average time tau(c) of a free random walk to cyclize, but contrasts with the cyclization time of a free self-avoiding walk (SAW), for which tau(r) similar to N-2.2. A simulation study by Cheng and Makarov J. Phys. Chem. B 114, 3321 (2010)] of the chain-end reaction time of an SAW on a flat impenetrable surface leads to the same N-2.2 behavior, which is surprising given the reduced conformational space a tethered polymer has to explore in order to react. This thesis consists of two independent chapters. The first chapter deals with universal algebra. It is shown, in von Neumann-Bernays-Gӧdel set theory, that free images of partial algebras exist in arbitrary varieties. It follows from this, as set-complete Boolean algebras form a variety, that there exist free set-complete Boolean algebras on any class of generators. This appears to contradict a well-known result of A. Hales and H. Gaifman, stating that there is no complete Boolean algebra on any infinite set of generators. However, it does not, as the algebras constructed in this chapter are allowed to be proper classes. The second chapter deals with positive elementary inductions. It is shown that, in any reasonable structure ᶆ, the inductive closure ordinal of ᶆ is admissible, by showing it is equal to an ordinal measuring the saturation of ᶆ. This is also used to show that non-recursively saturated models of the theories ACF, RCF, and DCF have inductive closure ordinals greater than ω.

The reduced Whitehead group $\SK$ of a graded division algebra graded by a torsion-free abelian group is studied. It is observed that the computations here are much more straightforward than in the non-graded setting. Bridges to the ungraded case are then established by the following two theorems: It is proved that $\SK$ of a tame valued division algebra over a henselian field coincides with $\SK$ of its associated graded division algebra. Furthermore, it is shown that $\SK$ of a graded division algebra is isomorphic to $\SK$ of its quotient division algebra. The first theorem gives the established formulas for the reduced Whitehead group of certain valued division algebras in a unified manner, whereas the latter theorem covers the stability of reduced Whitehead groups, and also describes $\SK$ for generic abelian crossed products.

The reduced unitary Whitehead group $\SK$ of a graded division algebra equipped with a unitary involution (i.e., an involution of the second kind) and graded by a torsion-free abelian group is studied. It is shown that calculations in the graded setting are much simpler than their nongraded counterparts. The bridge to the non-graded case is established by proving that the unitary $\SK$ of a tame valued division algebra wih a unitary involution over a henselian field coincides with the unitary $\SK$ of its associated graded division algebra. As a consequence, the graded approach allows us not only to recover results available in the literature with substantially easier proofs, but also to calculate the unitary $\SK$ for much wider classes of division algebras over henselian fields.

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for two ax+b-like groups to have isomorphic C*-algebras. In particular, we show that there are many non-isomorphic ax+b -like Lie groups having isomorphic group C*-algebras.

Let X be a connected, noetherian scheme and A{script} be a sheaf of Azumaya algebras on X, which is a locally free O{script}-module of rank a. We show that the kernel and cokernel of K(X) ? K(A{script}) are torsion groups with exponent a for some m and any i = 0, when X is regular or X is of dimension d with an ample sheaf (in this case m = d + 1). As a consequence, K(X, Z/m) ? K(A{script}, Z/m), for any m relatively prime to a. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
